Mahamarakkala Kurukulasooriya Patabendige Akila Dananjaya Perera – or Akila, as he's known to his mates – had a debut to remember when Sri Lanka met New Zealand in the Super Eights at the World Twenty20.

In the 12th over of New Zealand's
innings Dananjaya attempted to get his hands on a thump back down the
ground from Kiwi batsman Rob Nicol, but the ball evaded his grasp and
caught him flush on the face.

Thankfully the 18-year-old – the latest spinner off the production line from the country that gave us Muttiah Muralitharan – was up on his feet after treatment and he was able to complete his over.

He
even went on to have the last laugh as he had Nicol caught in the deep –
adding to the wicket of Martin Guptill that he had taken earlier in the
innings to finish with figures of 2-32.

Dananjaya's variations will make him a
tricky prospect for England, who Sri Lanka meet on Monday, but his
maiden international appearance will be remembered for reasons other
than the two wickets that he took.
