Chelsea have missed out on Brazilian target Taison to Shakhtar.
The attacking midfielder was given a deadline of January 10 to move to Chelsea or be forced to stay with Metalist. But Shakhtar used a clause in his contract to buy him for 12.5million from Metalist at the last minute.
The midfielder was on the brink of a move to Stamford Bridge at the beginning of the month after talks in London but has now joined the Ukrainian side on a five-year deal.
All smiles: Chelsea target Taison has joined Shakhtar Donetsk
He even attended a Chelsea game and was convinced that Roman Abramovich would meet the 11m asking price.
But a Shakhtar club statement read: ‘On 10 January, presidents of FC Shakhtar and FC Metalist Rinat Akhmetov and Serhiy Kurchenko negotiated the transfer of a forward Barcellos Fred Taison from the Kharkiv club to the Donetsk team.
'The negotiations were complicated. The initial sum of 15million dollars, proposed by Shakhtar, was rejected by the Metalist president. We did not come to a compromise.
'Then, the Donetsk side took advantage of the clause in Taison’s contract, according to which he could leave his former club for 20m dollars.
'As a result, FC Shakhtar paid 20m dollars, and we got a player who really wanted to join our team. The Brazilian player's five-year contract started on 11 January.'
Upheaval: There are plenty of changes happening at Stamford Bridge
