Rio Ferdinand continued his somewhat unsporting week by shoving the back of Fernando Torres' head in an off-the-ball incident during Manchester United's 2-2 draw with Chelsea in the FA Cup quarter-final.

The centre back, touted for a recall to Roy Hodgson's England squad, went in for a challenge with Torres and after the pair had got up, barged him with his forearm while the referee was looking the other way.

Torres fell to the ground in a heap and Ferdinand ushered the Spaniard back to his feet.

On Tuesday night Ferdinand was seen sarcastically clapping in referee Cuneyt Cakir's face in the aftermath of United's 2-1 defeat by Real Madrid.

Cakir had controversially sent off Nani during the game and the furious Ferdinand made his feelings clear at the final whistle.

He has avoided censure from UEFA over the incident and the club also were not punished for not fulfilling their post-match media obligations.

Sir Alex Ferguson refused to speak after the game and his players were also prevented from speaking.

Carmelo Anthony relishes London return with New York Knicks against Detroit Pistons

EXCLUSIVE: Yanks for the memories, London… now I can't wait to get back, says Knicks superstar Anthony

|

UPDATED:

13:23 GMT, 26 November 2012

It was the scene of his greatest triumph to date and, naturally, Carmelo Anthony can't wait to get back to London in the New Year.

The 28-year-old was one of the star members in the USA's all-conquering Dream Team alongside the likes of Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, winning gold in the men's basketball at the 2012 Olympics.

With the regular NBA season back in full flow the New York Knicks forward has continued to shine, scoring over 20 points in 11 of the 12 games he has played in since the new 82-game campaign began at the beginning of the month.

While the Knicks have famously not won a world championship since 1973, coach Mike Woodson's Anthony-inspired side are currently enjoying the franchise's best ever start to a season with nine wins and three defeats.

Indeed, there's no doubt in the mind of veteran team-mate Marcus Camby that Anthony's achievements earlier this summer have acted as the catalyst to the Knicks' stunning start so far, which has suddenly offered the usually pessimistic natives a newfound cause for optimism.

'I think that whole Olympics experience has elevated his game,' said Camby. 'Melo came back with a lot more confidence and as you have seen this year, he is playing lights out basketball for us.'

Flying high: The Knicks star scored 29 points in his side's win over the Detroit Pistons on Saturday

Tyson Chandler, another stand-out Knicks performer and who was also part of the USA's gold medal-winning team, is in agreement with Camby and added: 'He [Anthony] has been so consistent throughout the year of getting us going early. His being physical gets us into the bonus, which really help out.'

And after almost single-handedly crushing the Detroit Pistons in front of a sold-out Madison Square Garden on Sunday (scoring 29 points in the 121-100 victory), there's little wonder why Anthony is so enthused about the thought of returning to the capital on January 17 when the Knicks next meet the Pistons at the O2 Arena.

'Man that's far,' joked Anthony, who was speaking to Sportsmail in New York. 'But I can't wait to get back over there in London.'

A smile as big as the Brooklyn Bridge covers the easy-going superstar's face and his eyes illuminate like the bright lights on Times Square as he reflects on his 'unforgettable' experience at the Games.

'It was probably one of the best experiences I've ever had just being over there, being in London [at the Olympics], both on the court and off the court,' he said.

'You know, I've got some good stories of my time at the Olympics Village but I'll keep most of those to myself. I'll keep them locked up in my vault!

'The Village was great and we hung out with whoever was there to be honest. For most of the time, there were a lot of other matches going on so we would just be there, eat at the cafeteria and hang out.

'We also had the chance to go and eat at some other spots and do some sightseeing. You know, it was great. We went to see the [London] Eye, man. And we went to the [Buckingham] Palace.

'You know, over in the UK there's definitely a lot of fashion with the clothes and, of course, there's a lot of history too when it comes to the buildings and all that.

'The fans were great to us too. They were very knowledgable of the game and basketball is definitely growing over there in London.

'The whole thing really was just one of a kind.'

With Anthony at the peak of his powers, London will undoubtedly welcome him back with open arms.

Rose blooming, so let’s not rake over the coals

Did this column unwittingly play a small role in Justin Rose’s stirring ascent to the world’s top five Rose’s caddie Mark Fulcher wonders as much and comes up with a rather amusing anecdote as evidence.

Cast your mind back to December 2009 when, for a bit of fun, I decided to hand out Christmas gifts or coal to players who had been good or bad.

Regular readers will be well aware of my penchant for sitting on the fence on these matters, as illustrated by my somewhat lofty verdict on Rose’s season: ‘Biggest disappointment this year for me was Justin Rose.

Poor Fulcher almost choked on his breakfast, and telephoned Rose with a plan. ‘Do you think Derek would take it in the right spirit if I had a lorry load of coal delivered to the Daily Mail’s office’ he asked. Actually, living 200 miles away, I’d have thought it hilarious.

Eighteen months on, Fulcher tells this story with a huge smile on his face. ‘I thought the piece was very unfair, if I’m honest, and I don’t know how much it motivated Justin but it certainly motivated me.

‘Now look at him. No-one has played better this season from tee to green and he is so close to finishing it off with his putting as well.’

Two weeks after that conversation, Rose began the run that justified his man’s faith, finishing runner-up in the Tour Championship in Atlanta, playing a starring role at the Ryder Cup, before winning the first Turkish Airlines World Golf Championship, beating Tiger Woods and Lee Westwood along the way.

Now he’s in China with Rory, Lee, Luke, Poults and the rest of the boys. It’s the start of what appears a month-long duel between Rose and Rory McIlroy to see who finishes the season as top dog on the European Tour.

No coal this year, then. But hey, if it helps, how can he possibly think that this is a great year when he hasn’t won three majors

Grand Larceny of Golf

The PGA Grand Slam of Golf begins in Bermuda on Tuesday but it might be better known as the Grand Larceny of Golf if Padraig Harrington walks off with the $600,000 first prize.

This is a 36-hole exhibition event designed for the four major winners each year — yet more gravy if you like.

Cheeky entry: Padraig Harrington is world No 54

Except this year the US PGA champion Rory McIlroy has a prior engagement in China (his place has been taken by Keegan Bradley), Open winner Ernie Els pulled up lame, first and second alternates Graeme McDowell and Tiger Woods made their excuses and flew to the Far East and well, gulp, they have somehow been left with the world No 54, Harrington.

The Irishman reckons winning would represent finished business, given he just lost out in 2007 and 2008 when he was a legitimate entrant.

A steal, I’d call it.

Furyk comes up short yet again

One of the abiding images of this season is going to be Jim Furyk with his hands on his knees. He struck that disconsolate pose at the US Open, the Bridgestone Invitational, the Ryder Cup and again on Sunday at the McGladrey Classic in Georgia.

All four events came down to how Furyk played the 18th hole and in all four instances he came up woefully short. Four pars and he would have been in an 18-hole play-off for a major, a winner of a World Championship event and an American hero at Medinah. Instead, one of the gentlemen of the game ended up with nothing.

Have we ever seen such a litany of final-hole failure from one player in the same season before — particularly one with a reputation as a hardened competitor who gets the job done Gamely, Furyk gave his season a B-plus rating, which would be fair enough if golf were a 17-hole sport. But it won’t feel like a B-plus year when he wakes up screaming in the middle of the night.

Carroll sweats on Liverpool future as Werner reveals Rodgers will decide striker's fate

Fantasy football 2012

Andy Carroll's Liverpool future will be decided by one man, manager Brendan Rodgers, insists chairman Tom Werner.

New Anfield boss Rodgers will consider offers around 20million but none of Carroll’s suitors this summer – West Ham, Newcastle and Fulham – have matched the price.

He has now flown out to join the rest of the squad on pre-season tour in the US with his five England colleagues, who were given a week’s extra rest after Euro 2012.

But with his future still undecided, Werner has stated that Rodgers alone will decide if Carroll has a future on Merseyside.

'Brendan is clearly the leader here,' Werner told Sky Sports News. 'The only thing I can say is we will do what is best for the club.

'At the moment Andy is on the squad, he is an important member of the England team and he has a lot of talent. We will see what happens.'

Carroll is furious that his Anfield career could be curtailed by Rodgers and is determined he won't be pushed out of the club.

Any interested club will have to match his 65,000-a-week wages, but he will consider slightly reduced terms if he heads back to St James' Park.

And he believes he has a strong hand to play in negotiations with as he still has three years left on his contract.

Brendan Rodgers has confirmed Liverpool are working on a deal to sign Clint Dempsey – as he reiterated that Andy Carroll will not be allowed to leave on loan.

The Liverpool manager, who is in Boston on his club’s pre-season tour, has courted Dempsey all summer but only now has he revealed his admiration for the player.

Fulham want for 10million for the USA
international, who has 12 months left on his contract, but Liverpool’s
limited transfer budget means there are still negotiations to be done.

‘Clint is a player we've enquired
about, it is as simple as that,’ said Rodgers, who would also like to
sign Joe Allen from his old club Swansea.

‘Ian Ayre, our managing director, has
spoken with (Fulham) to see what the position is. That is where we're
at. Clint is a very talented player but we don't like to talk about
other clubs’ players.’

Carroll’s future has been the subject
of intense speculation but Liverpool are taking a hard stance with
potential suitors and won’t budge from their 20million valuation.

Aston Villa have joined Newcastle and
West Ham on Carroll’s list of admirers and could be in a position to
negotiate as they are still owed money from selling Stewart Downing to
Liverpool for 20million last summer.

Whatever happens, Rodgers is adamant Carroll will only leave on Liverpool’s terms.

‘To consider a loan period for
someone the club spent 35million on isn't something we're looking to
do,’ said Rodgers. ‘Andy will be the same as every other player – if
there's an offer that comes in we'd look at it and see if it's going to
be worthwhile for the club as a whole.

‘People talk about whether he can fit
into my style or not, but if you're a club and you spend 35million on a
player you'd like to think he can fit into whatever style the team
plays.

‘He's a good player. He'll join the rest of the group next week and we'll take it from there.’

British No 3 Baker falls at first hurdle after straight-sets defeat to Roddick

Andy Roddick snuffed out Jamie Baker's Wimbledon dreams as the American finished off the plucky Scot in three sets.

Resuming a set and a break up after a rain delay from Tuesday, Roddick clinched the second set of this first-round match with ease before edging a nervy third to run out a 7-6 (7/1), 6-4, 7-5 winner.

Despite losing in straight sets, Baker,
who was diagnosed with a deadly blood disorder four years ago, will take
heart from his performance.

The 25-year-old was Roddick's equal for much of the encounter, trading
powerful blows with the three-time champion to earn five break points
that he could not ultimately convert.

Baker, ranked 161 places below Roddick, started off confidently when the
players returned to Court One this evening, but he could not prevent
the American moving 2-0 ahead, the 30-year-old clinching the set with a
fine ace.

Baker double-faulted but still managed to hold his serve at the start of
the deciding set and the Glaswegian then engineered a break point in
the fourth game.

He was unable to convert it, though, clearing the baseline after a powerful serve from Roddick.

The British No 3 had another two break points in Roddick's following
service game but his opponent upped his game and used all his experience
to see off the threat to leave the set at 3-3.

Roddick moved in for the kill in the ninth game but Baker dug deep and
survived three break points, much to the delight of the partisan crowd.

Baker offered Roddick a break point in the 11th game after going long
with a forehand and the Scot collapsed under pressure, failing with a
cheeky drop shot after a long rally.

Serving for the match, Roddick showed his class by holding to love to set up a second-round clash with 19th seed Kei Nishikori.
