Pedro scored the only goal of the game as Spain closed the gap on Group I leaders France.

Spain's returning playmaker, Xavi, created the opening with an outstanding ball to Nacho Monreal. The Arsenal left back found the incoming Pedro, who put the ball past Hugo Lloris.

Raphael Varane had a golden opportunity to equalise when Victor Valdes flapped at a corner, but the Real Madrid wonderkid could not get the ball under control in time to slide the ball into the empty net.

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba, who was outrstanding on his second performance for his country, was sent off for two yellow cards in as many minutes with just over 20 minutes to play.

Shaw tipped to follow in Bale's footsteps as next Southampton wonderkid

Southampton youngster Luke Shaw is drawing comparisons to former Saints teenage prodigy Gareth Bale.

The 17-year-old left-back has just started three Premier League games in a row for Saints which has coincided with a three-game unbeaten run. Two wins and a draw has won them seven points that have pulled them out of the relegation zone from second-bottom.

Bale won Football League Young Player of the Year in 2007 following a season as left-back and he scored five goals in 45 appearances in total for the club.

The Welshman moved to Tottenham for 5million and has since become one of the best attacking midfield players in the world.

And the similarities between Shaw and Bale have got people saying that he could follow in his footsteps.

Team-mate Adam Lallana said: 'The calmness he possesses for a 17-year-old is astonishing. He has got a great left foot on him and he has bedded in really well. He has got to keep up his fitness and he is going to go far in the game.

'There a big similarities between him and Bale. That is what people have been saying but he knows he has got to keep his feet on the ground and has a lot to learn but he is going to improve a lot with us, I can tell.'

Shaw, who came through Southampton's academy that has produced the likes of Bale, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and made his debut for Saints last season in an FA Cup match against Millwall, was subject to a 4m bid by Chelsea during the summer. But Southampton have always maintained he is a big part of their future.

International star: Adam Lallana hopes to remain in Roy Hodgson's plans

Lallana, 24, got his first England call-up in September and he hopes Roy Hodgson's interest in bringing youth into the national side means he and more of the younger players at Southampton get their chance in the future. Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne, 21, plays for England Under 21s and Shaw is in the Under 17 side.

Lallana added: 'I would love to get back in the England squad as any other young England player in the Premier League would. It is early stages for [Clyne and Shaw].

'Hodgson has shown he wants to bring youth in but I know they are not going to get too far ahead of themselves. If in time us improving gets some of the younger lads call-ups then that is brilliant. Clyne and Shaw have been excellent.'

United pipped to Irish wonderkid Baba as Fulham pull off major coup

Fulham have won the race to sign Irish teenage sensation Noe Baba ahead of competition from Manchester United, Sunderland and Celtic.

The 16-year-old defender opted for the London club after being convinced their recruitment and academy set-up would give him a better platform to progress.

United headed a list of 16 clubs chasing the Cameroon-born kid who plays for Castlebar Celtic in County Mayo, but the presence of Fulham's Malcolm Elias, Steve Wigley, Huw Jennings and Stewart Henderson swayed his mind.

The quartet were key figures at Southampton in the production and development of players such as Wayne Bridge, Theo Walcott, Gareth Bale and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain.

Although they went on to separate jobs they reunited at Craven Cottage this summer and their reputation is growing once again.

Fulham will formalise details on Thursday and Baba, who has already passed a medical and agreed a contract, will join from January for a fee of around 130,000.

Baba, who only turned 16 in August, was born in Cameroon and moved to Ireland with his family where he became the first African to captain an Irish age-group team when he led the Under 17s.

He was called into the Republic of Ireland Under 19 squad in October and can play centre-back, defensive midfield or full-back.

Holland 0 Germany 0: Bore draw as clash of the titans fails to live up to expectations

|

UPDATED:

00:04 GMT, 15 November 2012

It's supposed to be one of the biggest rivalries in world football.

But Holland versus Germany turned out to be a 90 minute snoozefest in Amsterdam last night as they played out an uninspiring goalless draw.

Maybe both sets of players had their weekend domestic fixtures on their minds – but if ever there was a clear illustration of why so many feel international friendliest are pointless exercises, this was it.

Bore draw: Per Mertesacker and Arjen Robben do battle

Germany tried to impose their smooth passing style on the hosts – who honoured former internationals Edgar Davids, Michael Reiziger, Patrick Kluivert and Ruud van Nistelrooy before kick off.

In particular, Borussia Dortmund wonderkid Mario Goetze, the man Arsene Wenger dreams of signing, was enjoying plenty of the ball in the opening 15 minutes.

Tough going: Rafael van der Vaart (left) tries to inspire Holland

However, despite the wealth of
attacking talent on show at the Amsterdam Arena, former Liverpool
forward Dirk Kuyt mustered up the first opportunity of any real note
with a tame sliding effort in the 20th minute.

Everton defender John Heitinga did well to keep the shackles on Goetze a minute later as the 20-year-old tried to conjure up a yard of space to unleash an effort on goal deep inside the Dutch box before blocking Lewis Holtby's low goalbound effort from Benedikt Howedes' excellent cut-back soon after.

Heads: Mats Hummels and Dirk Kuyt

Arjen Robben wasted a golden opportunity to give Holland a 30th minute lead when he was sent clear through by Ibrahim Afellay – but the former Chelsea winger failed to squeeze his shot in after rounding German keeper Manuel Neuer.

Howedes and Marxo Reus both had chances to put Joachim Low's side ahead before Heitinga was forced into a superb goalline clearance from Ilkay Gundogan's low shot with the final kick of the opening half.

The second half started with the same pedestrian pace as the first, with neither side eager to impose themselves.

And no amount of encouragement from supporters spark any sort of tempo or urgency to this drabbest of matches.

In fact the first worthy attempt on goal in the second half came in the 77th minute when Neuer produced a brilliant stop low to his left, denying Dutch substitute Daryl Janmaat's low effort from the edge of the box after Kuyt's lay-off.

Eljero Elia flashed an angled effort from 16 yards wide moments later as Holland finally showed signs of life.

But it was merely a flash of entertainment as the clash ended goalless.

Chelsea plot improved 20m bid for striker Schurrle… but Sturridge could be out

Chelsea are planning a new 20million offer for Germany striker Andre Schurrle.

The European Champions had a 17m bid for the 21-year-old front-man rejected earlier this month by Bayer Leverkusen, who are adamant they want to keep their man.

But the Blues are preparing to test their resolve with another move, which if completed could see Daniel Sturridge leave Chelsea, according to The Telegraph.

Chelsea have already pulled off another transfer coup by clinching the signature of 25m Brazilian wonderkid Oscar, who can play as a forward, from under the noses of Tottenham.

The arrivals of Oscar and Schurrle would add to those of Eden Hazard and Marko Marin and put Sturridge's place under threat.

The England striker is recovering after contracting viral meningitis – typically considered a mild strain of the disease.

Schurrle joined Leverkusen from Mainz last year and has since established himself as one of the most exciting young talents in the Bundesliga.

He has won 16 caps for Germany and was a member of their Euro 2012 squad where he made two substitute appearance in the victories over Denmark and Greece.

Chelsea have pulled off another transfer coup by clinching the signature of 25million Brazilian wonderkid Oscar.

Despite already splashing out 42m on Marko Marin and Eden Hazard, Roman Abramovich's latest revolution shows no signs of abating after he moved in for the Internacional playmaker who is regarded as one of the most exciting talents to emerge from Brazil in years.

To add further flavour to the European champions' deal, they have pipped their former manager Andre Villas-Boas in the process.

Tottenham's new boss thought he was in a strong position to land 20-year-old Oscar after making an offer last week.

It was reported the bid was 11m, but sources in South America say it was much higher than that and a club-record offer of nearer 18m.

Chelsea, however, have moved quickly to swamp Tottenham's offer and beat their former charge to his signature.

Born: September 9, 1991 in

Height: 5ft 10in.

2009: Sao Paulo, played 11 games.

From 2010: Signed for Internacional.

Has scored 19 goals in 70 games

International: Six Brazil caps.

Scored hat-trick as Brazil won the 2011 FIFA Under 20
World Cup, beating Portugal 3-2.

Oscar shot to prominence last summer when he became the first player to score a hat-trick in the FIFA Under 20 World Cup final against Portugal.

The Brazilian – full name Oscar dos Santos Emboaba Junior – was also watched by Real Madrid and Barcelona.

He is adept as a playmaker or in the role behind the striker and equally comfortable on the left or right of midfield. He is described as a 'typically brilliant Brazilian No 10'.

The acquisition will put pressure on the
position of Stamford Bridge idol Juan Mata, who is expected to be
rested at the start of the season due to his participation in the
Olympics for Spain.

Chelsea fans will be able to get an early sight of the new signing as he is also a member of his country's Olympic squad.

Chelsea came in for criticism for the way they won the Champions League with an obdurate defensive style.

However, the signing of Oscar is
another bold statement of intent from Abramovich as he strives to make
Chelsea a more fluid, attacking team in the mould of Barcelona.

The
signing boosts the Brazilian contingent at Stamford Bridge, where Oscar
will be joining Ramires in midfield, David Luiz and exciting young
prospect Lucas Piazon.

Abramovich believes if manager Roberto Di Matteo can channel that flair alongside the defensive grit the squad showed to win the Champions League, then Chelsea will be well placed to mount more serious challenges on domestic and European honours.

And his spending hasn't finished yet, with Chelsea also linked to another Brazilian star, 25-year-old striker Hulk of Porto.

Tottenham have made an 11million offer for Brazil wonderkid Oscar as Andre Villas-Boas' revolution gathers pace.

And the future of Brad Friedel is under real threat with the new Spurs manager ready to approve a swoop for France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Gylfi Sigurdsson was confirmed as the 34-year-old's first signing on Wednesday, with the White Hart Lane club paying 8million to Hoffenheim to complete the deal.

And Villas-Boas is wasting no time in his attempts to land more signings after the club opened dialogue with Internacional for Oscar.

The Brazillian side value the 20-year-old at 20million but it is understood there is a willingness from the club and player to conclude a deal.

Oscar is viewed as a replacement for wantaway midfielder Luka Modric. Tottenham are also keen on pursuing a move for Porto midfielder Joao Moutinho.

Villas-Boas has made signing a new goalkeeper a priority this summer and is considering a move for Lyon keeper Lloris.

The 25-year-old – who captained France at Euro 2012 – has been a long-term target for Tottenham and been regularly scouted by the North London club.

Everything is in place for Spurs to launch a move for Lloris – who is valued at 16million by the French club and Villas-Boas is said to be keen.

Meanwhile, Villas-Boas is considering whether to cash in on playmaker Rafael van der Vaart.

The Holland international is wanted by Schalke and Hamburg and the Spurs boss has not ruled out selling the fans favourite this summer.

Meanwhile, Barnsley have signed former Tottenham goalkeeper Ben Alnwick on a free transfer.
