Ajax 0 Man Utd 2: Young and Hernandez get Europa League campaign up and running

Manchester United got their inaugural Europa League campaign off to the perfect start with a convincing 2-0 victory in Holland.

After a scrappy first half, the visitors asserted their authority and took the lead through Ashley Young's clinical finish in the 59th minute.

The winger, who recently returned from a two-month lay-off, led the home defence a merry dance before coolly slotting home from inside the box.

With five minutes remaining, it was up to Mexican hitman Chicharito to seal a pleasing victory in the first match of the two-legged tie after neat combination play with Wayne Rooney.

Ajax want probe into Lyon"s 7-1 win over Dinamo Zagreb

Ajax demand probe into Lyon”s incredible 7-1 Champions League victory

Ajax coach Frank de Boer has urged UEFA to investigate Lyon”s improbable 7-1 Champions League win over Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday, which cost the Dutch side a place in the last 16.

Lyon qualified for the knockout stage at Ajax”s expense after they overturned a seven-goal deficit, beat Dinamo away and saw Ajax lose 3-0 at home to Real Madrid after having two goals ruled out.

The French club had scored only two goals in their five previous Group D matches and were 1-0 down to 10-man Dinamo, yet equalised just before half-time and hit six goals in 30 minutes. That included a seven-minute hat-trick for Bafetimbi Gomis, the fastest ever in the competition.

A front-page headline in French newspaper L”Equipe on Thursday called the turnaround miraculous.

Further suspicions were raised by an image that appears to show Dinamo defender Domagoj Vida winking at Gomis after Lisandro scored Lyon”s fifth.

De Boer said: “If there was something unusual, UEFA should investigate what happened in Zagreb.

“My assistants have told me that the goals came quick and easy, because you can”t normally score these goals in half an hour.

“At half-time I saw Zagreb were ahead 1-0, then in the dressing room (after the match) I heard it was 7-1. This is what you imagine in your worst dreams.”

Ajax goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer added: “It”s indescribable. Who could have thought this would happen We knew we might lose to Madrid but we didn”timagine Lyon would win by such a margin.”

But UEFA say they have no plans to investigate Lyon”s win and last night insisted any further examination was “not justified”.

The organisation”s betting fraud detection system, which monitors 400 betting companies, did not detect any irregular patterns.

France”sonline gambling regulator, ARJEL, also found “no particular anomaly” – either in the total amount gambled or the number of bets placed.

Englishreferee Mark Clattenburg was in charge at the Stadion Maksimir in Zagreb and UEFA could yet act if he or his team mention anything suspicious in their reports.

A Lyon statement said they approved of ARJEL”s probe after an “atypical” result, but regretted “comments are not being limited to the sporting aspect of an incredible exploit”.

UEFA”s French president Michel Platini said he had “no doubts whatsoever about the integrity of the match or the competition”.

Dinamo, who sacked coach Krunoslav Jurcic straight after the match, described speculation about the result as “shameful, malicious and tendentious”.

“(It”s) a defeat that was hard to imagine,” the club added.

UEFA said in a statement they consider the integrity of their competitions, including the Champions League, as an absolute priority.

“For the time being (the betting fraud detections system) has not shown any irregular betting patterns,” they said.
