Andre Villas-Boas insists he is not panicking about Tottenham's season despite seeing his team concede an injury-time equaliser against West Brom.

Tottenham dominated the first half but Jermain Defoe, Rafael van der Vaart, Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale were all guilty of spurning good chances.

Their profligacy looked as if it was going to go unpunished when Benoit Assou-Ekotto smashed home a deflected half-volley 16 minutes from full-time, but James Morrison popped up in injury time to snatch a point for West Brom after a scramble in the box.

Villas-Boas, who replaced Harry Redknapp at the helm this summer, has now gained one point from his two opening matches.

The 34-year-old insists there is still plenty of reason to be optimistic about the season ahead, though.

'It is very, very important to get that first win but there are still 36 games ahead of us,' Villas-Boas said.

'We have one more point than we did this time last year.

'The players have been excellent. They have been receptive and there is a good feeling about what we are doing. We are just waiting for the results to accompany us a little bit more.'

Spurs were on top throughout the first half, but the only difficult save Ben Foster had to make before Spurs opened the scoring was from a Assou-Ekotto free-kick just after the break.

Van der Vaart looked a shadow of the player that has terrorised Barclays Premier League defences for the last two seasons and despite looking sharp on occasions, Defoe struggled to make an impact on his own up front.

Emmanuel Adebayor caused problems when he came off the bench in the second half, but Villas-Boas admits his team as a whole must be sharper in front of goal next week when they welcome Norwich to White Hart Lane.

'We have been working well during the week, trying to prepare and get the result,' Villas-Boas added.

'Now we just have to be a bit more aggressive in front of goal. We have to finish the chances we have.

'It was frustrating not to get something from the first half today. We created lots of opportunities and we were extremely attacking.

'We could have got something from the first half but we didn't so it was a pity we conceded that goal right at the end.'

Tottenham's start is in complete contrast to that of West Brom, who now have four points on the board after Saturday's draw and their win over Liverpool last weekend.

Their new manager Steve Clarke inspired an improved performance from his team in the second half after giving his side a rollicking at the break, and he also made a key impact on the game by bringing on Romelu Lukaku for Shane Long on the hour.

The Belgian teenager, snubbed by Villas-Boas at Chelsea last season, used his hulking frame to give William Gallas a torrid time.

'We are pleased with Romelu,' Clarke said. 'It's great that you can look to your bench and see people who can change a game and Romelu is one of them. He did a good job for me, but so did Shane Long. He had the hardest part of the game.'

Clarke also reserved praise for Morrison, who remained calm to stab home from 10 yards 30 seconds into injury time.

It was something of a surprise that the former Middlesbrough man was even on the pitch, though, as he had rolled his ankle in the second minute of the game.

'We weren't sure whether he would continue,' Clarke said. 'It did cross my mind to bring him off a couple of times, but you have to leave someone like James on the pitch because if you leave him on he can pop up with a goal and he did that.

'I never thought it wouldn't be our day today. I always thought we'd get another chance to score and we did.'

Rafael Van Der Vaart’s wish to return to Hamburg has been scuppered after the club’s billionaire benefactor decided against bankrolling it.

Encouraged by earlier assurances that they could count on financial backing from 75-year old local businessman Klaus-Michael Kuehne, Hamburg registered their interest in Tottenham midfielder Van der Vaart and were in advanced talks with about signing him for 9.5million.

But they were forced to ditch their interest after Kuehne, whose wealth from his transportation and logistics business makes him Germany’s seventh richest man, pulled the plug on the deal.

Club officials confirmed last night they couldn’t hope to proceed without Kuenhe’s input and that the transfer was off.

The about-turn is a setback for van
der Vaart, whose wife works near Hamburg and who admitted just two
months ago that he ‘still loves the club’ after spending three seasons
there, prior to joining Real Madrid.

Kuenhe seemed to be urging Hamburg to
follow up their long-standing interest in van der Vaart earlier this
summer when he said: ‘I am an investor for new players and definitely
available. Hamburg must land a big transfer, because that will attract
more top players and make us even stronger.’

Asked whether it was his intention to sell the Holland international, the Portuguese said: 'No, on the contrary. He's a player of great importance for us, a player I count on.

'I'm not sure if Hamburg are interested but he's a player who at the moment is not for sale. Anything can happen but he's a player we are counting on.'

Spurs put great effort into landing Gylfi Sigurdsson this summer amid strong interest from Liverpool.

Villas-Boas seems to have a lot of faith in the former Hoffenheim player, but denied that Van der Vaart is no longer in his first-team plans.

'Rafa was very unlucky because when he came from his vacation after the Euros he got injured in the game against LA Galaxy so he missed most of our pre-season in America and Sigurdsson was with us all pre-season,' Villas-Boas said.

'He couldn't therefore play against Watford and Valencia so he came back late for selection and it was pretty straightforward to select Sigurdsson for the Newcastle game.

'Now Rafa has trained with us all week and he's looking strong and in contention.'

Andre Villas-Boas has taken a veiled swipe at his former Chelsea players as he insisted the team spirit at his new club Tottenham is incomparable.

The Portuguese head coach cut a relaxed figure on Friday night here in Baltimore, ahead of Tottenham's friendly against Liverpool here, significantly more at ease than during his final days at Stamford Bridge.

Villas-Boas' spell in charge at Chelsea was peppered with clashes with senior players and claims that he had lost the dressing room, so it was significant to hear his pointed views when he was asked about how he had been received by Tottenham's players.

'It is a question you need to ask the players,' said Villas-Boas, who added there was 'nothing new' to say about Luka Modric's position. 'But from my perspective I have been adapting to them. They are enjoying what they are doing.

'You will get a more specific answer from the players, of course. I think the warmth of the group is excellent to see. It is two different groups reacting differently. We have seen the spirit of this group and it is different from what I had last year.'

After playing Liverpool here, Tottenham head up to New York where they will face the New York Red Bulls and Villas-Boas is hoping that Rafael van der Vaart, who hobbled off with a groin problem in the 1-1 draw with LA Galaxy.

Gareth Bale scored Tottenham's goal in LA but his presence in that match, 24 hours before Team GB began their Olympic campaign, caused a furore, prompting FIFA president Sepp Blatter to wade into the row.

That, though, clearly irked Villas-Boas and he expressed his frustration that Blatter felt compelled to comment on Bale's situation, given how disappointed the Welshman felt after injury forced him to withdraw from Stuart Pearce's squad.

'I haven’t been in England to the heat of the response from the fans,’ said Bale. 'I can understand their frustration for missing a player of Gareth’s dimensions involved with Team GB. But everything was done as it should be.

'It was approved by the FA doctors regarding his injury, so for me it is the end of story. I can’t make a comment because he is the FIFA president. But he has decided to speak, maybe not knowing the full extent of the situation. They are unfortunate comments.

'Gareth made his feelings aware (about playing for Team GB) and how disappointed he was when not being called up. For sure he is feeling frustrated that he cannot play.'

Gareth Bale started and scored for Tottenham against LA Galaxy – despite being ruled out of the Olympics squad with a back injury.

The Wales winger was not deemed fit enough to be named in Stuart Pearce's Team GB squad, yet still played in the majority of the 1-1 draw.

And Bale made a major impact, scoring the opener before David Lopes equalised for the hosts.

'He [Bale] came back to us during
this week so we had to control the amount of effort he could put in,'
said Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas.

'He is of course extremely young and
physically – a beast – so he was able to put in the effort. We extended
that because we want him to complete a certain amount of minutes before
we start the season.

'You could say that we took a risk.
If you recall ten minutes into the game he was stretching himself so he

we just let him carry on.

'We just welcome his recovery, that is the most important thing for me, to have a player of his dimensions available.'

New signing Jan Vertonghen started
alongside Younes Kaboul in central defence, while Jermain Defoe started
up front as a lone striker in the clash at the Home Depot Center.

Meanwhile, ex-Spurs forward Robbie
Keane captained the Galaxy – who were without David Beckham and Landon
Donovan due to their involvement with the MLS All Stars who face Chelsea
in Philadelphia.

Spurs winger Andros Townsend had the
first worthy effort before a clumsy mix-up between Carlo Cudicini and
Kaboul nearly let in Keane.

And the Republic of Ireland striker
looked lively during the opening exchanges as Galaxy started the
encounter in encouraging fashion.

Defoe saw a stinging 20 yard drive expertly turned wide by Galaxy keeper Brian Perk in the 13th minute.

But Bale put the tourists ahead in the 17th minute, superbly glancing Gylfi Sigurdsson's cross past Perk's outstretched arm.

Galaxy had a 25th minute penalty appeal turned down after Sean Franklin's attempted cross hit Bassong on the arm.

However, the home side did not have
to wait too long before pulling themselves back on level terms when
Marcelo Sarvas played in Hector Jimenez down the right, whose low first
time cross found Lopes who smashed home from eight yards in the 29th
minute.

Tottenham could have found themselves
behind four minutes later when the dangerous Franklin stood up an
inviting cross to Jimenez, whose headed effort was well stopped by
Cudicini.

Villas-Boas was given another
headache moments later, when Van der Vaart limped off uncomfortably
holding his groin. The Dutchman was replaced by Jermaine Jenas.

Keane then missed a glorious chance
to give his side the advantage in the 39th minute – but with just
Cudicini to beat the ex-Liverpool striker fired his effort straight at
the Italian before sending the rebound wide from a tight angle.

Villas-Boas made two further changes at half time, Aaron Lennon and Benoit Assou-Ekotto coming on for Townsend and Bassong.

Defoe missed the first real

shot wide with just substitute keeper Brian Rowe to beat after Kaboul's
raking long ball.

Tottenham then somehow failed to win a
penalty when Rowe blatantly fouled Bale deep inside the Galaxy box –
but referee Fotias Bazakos did not point to the spot in the 62nd minute.

Sigurdsson then squandered a golden
opportunity two minutes later when he sent his effort from Bale's low

On the injuries to Walker and Van der Vaart, Villas-Boas added: 'We are looking at three or four days for both, hopefully.

'Reassessment is always important, I
wouldn’t like to extend myself without the knowledge of both injuries
but Van der Vaart felt a little tight in his abductor and Kyle slightly
in his ankle.

'But both should be back.'

Tottenham forward Rafael van der Vaart has no plans to leave the club this summer.

The 29-year-old Holland international has been linked with a move away from White Hart Lane following the dismissal of manager Harry Redknapp last month.

But he has played down such talk and insisted the future is bright under new boss Andre Villas-Boas.

He said in The Sun: 'My place is at Spurs. I want to win the title with this club. Each summer my name appears in the transfer market.

'The race for the top four will be a total war from the very first day.'

Joe Jordan does not waste time on regrets. If there is even one on his mind, it is between him and his maker.

But his frustration at being on the sidelines has increased since he trailed Harry Redknapp out of Tottenham alongside Kevin Bond and Clive Allen nearly five weeks ago in what were the sackings that took football by surprise.

For Jordan a spell of enforced DIY and tidying his West Country garden has also given him time to reflect on seven years as Redknapp’s senior coach.

The Scot can offer a unique insight into Redknapp’s managerial style. ‘Some of the things I’ve read since Harry left have made me chuckle,’ he said.

‘We were told he was not only being replaced by a younger man [Andre Villas-Boas], but a young man who was a tactician.

‘It suggests some people don’t rate Harry on tactics. That would be wrong.

'They say his style is about motivation, but he’s far more than being purely a motivator.

‘No one who knows him or has worked with him would think that. Harry spends a lot of time on preparation.

'He keeps the game simple and wants the players to enjoy what they’re doing. He lets them play and is confident in their ability.

‘They will have responsibilities, but he thinks long and hard about who he names, the teams he wants and the best way to take on the opposition.

You cannot possibly say he is anything other than very tactically aware.

‘He is a brave manager who’ll change things when needed. If it means changing, say, from three defenders he will make that decision.

‘He can blend players, form partnerships. He can mentally picture a Rafael van der Vaart working with a Peter Crouch and scoring goals from the start.

‘He has a great memory and will recall a player he saw only once 10 years earlier.’

Jordan has no idea why Spurs dismissed one of England’s top managers after the club’s second top-four finish.

He added: ‘There was a blip, there was the link with the England job, but none of it affected the team. We were still playing well but just not scoring goals.

‘The disappointment was missing out on the Champions League because of Chelsea’s success.

‘Harry’s legacy is a squad that can take the title back to Spurs.’

The frustration for Jordan becomes more intense the nearer the new season approaches and the garden continues to look trim.

‘I’ll keep fit, I will watch matches, I’ll keep in touch with the game. I want to work and so, I think, does Harry.’

Manager Thorsten Fink said earlier: 'We have drawn up a target profile and Rafael van der Vaart would be an ideal fit.

'Any coach would be delighted to have

With the appointment of Andre Villas-Boas and the signings of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jan Vertonghen, Tottenham may just be one step closer to bringing back the title winning days of the 1960s.

New designers, Under Armour have unveiled the new home kit for the 2012/13 season – which is modelled mainly by Michael Dawson, Scott Parker and Kye Walker – featuring grey trim that closely matches the strips worn in a decade where the club won two FA Cups and the UEFA Cup.

White shorts also feature on the home kit, which apart from 2007/08, appear on the domestic home strip for the first time since 1987.
