Deon Burton silenced the boos that greeted him at Rotherham as the former Millers striker fired npower League Two leaders Gillingham to a 2-1 win at the New York Stadium.

Burton left Rotherham under a cloud seven years ago after handing in a transfer request and it was no surprise therefore that he was booed when he took to the pitch.

The former Derby striker had the last laugh, though, as his eighth and ninth goals of the season gave the visitors the win, with Jason Taylor on the mark for the hosts.

Second-placed Port Vale are now six points behind the Gills after their five-match unbeaten run came to an end with a 2-0 home defeat to Chesterfield.

Jay O'Shea and Tendayi Darikwa were on target for the Spireites, who moved up to ninth.

Cheltenham now trail Vale by just one point after Darryl Duffy's winner gave them a 3-2 victory over Northampton at Sixfields Stadium.

Adebayo Akinfenwa continued his fine form by giving Northampton the lead after two minutes and a Billy Jones own goal doubled the hosts' advantage.

Darren Carter and Chris Zebroski scored twice within the space of three minutes to make it 2-2, however, and Duffy sealed the win 10 minutes from time with a close-range finish.

Bradford warmed up for their Capital One Cup quarter-final against Arsenal with an Alan Connell-inspired victory over Torquay which lifts the Bantams above Rotherham into fourth.

Connell grabbed the only goal five minutes from time against his former club.

Fleetwood began life under Graham Alexander with a 0-0 home draw against Southend while bottom side Barnet drew 1-1 with AFC Wimbledon at Underhill.

Adam Mekki's late equaliser at Oxford was enough to move Aldershot out of the drop zone while Wycombe drew 2-2 with Morecambe at Adams Park.

Bristol Rovers dropped in to the bottom two with a 1-0 home defeat to Dagenham and Redbridge, who won the match courtesy of Sam Williams' seventh of season.

Rochdale's Terry Gornell scored a second-half double, but it was not enough to stop Exeter from moving into the play-off positions as they ran out 3-2 winners at Spotland.

A Jamal Fyfield own goal and Nick Chadwick's 90th-minute strike gave Plymouth a 2-0 win over York at Home Park in today's other fixture.

Paris St German want to offer Arsenal contract rebel Bacary Sagna a way out of the Emirates.

The French right-back does not want to sign the Gunners' offer of a one-year extension to his contract, which runs out in 2014.

PSG will make a 10million bid for the 29-year-old defender in the summer, according to The Sun.

Arsene Wenger lambasted the defender in September after he questioned Arsenal's transfer business.

In French publication L'Equipe Sagna questioned the club's decision to sell Robin van Persie and Alex Song, while also bringing his own future into doubt.

'Did I speak to Sagna Yes,' admitted Wenger.

'I believe any player or any employee always has to defend the company he works for. And if he is not completely happy with it then he has to go somewhere else.

'That is basically what I think. That is what I say to everybody.

'You have the freedom to say what you want in life but it is also important you understand what people feel about the club.'

England winger Theo Walcott's talks have also broken down after he rejected a 75,000-per-week five-year deal.

Fulham will spend in January transfer window, says Martin Jol

Jol eyes January sales as Fulham boss admits he must improve his squad

|

UPDATED:

14:58 GMT, 8 December 2012

Fulham manager Martin Jol will look to strengthen his squad in January despite the difficulties posed by the upcoming transfer window.

The Cottagers enjoyed a surprisingly good start to the season after losing a number of key players, including Mousa Dembele, Clint Dempsey and Danny Murphy.

That initial flourish has suddenly worn off, though, and Fulham have not won a match since mid-October, thanks in no small part to the impact injuries and suspensions have had on the squad.

Jol brought in free agents Giorgos Karagounis and Mickael Tavares after the summer window closed in a bid to beef up his side and there look set to be more new faces arriving in west London.

'If you would have told me in May that in December Bryan Ruiz won't be there through injury, Mousa Dembele and Clint Dempsey had gone, I would have thought it would be almost impossible,' Jol said .

'Luckily enough we brought in some quality players but they play up front most of the time, like Dimitar Berbatov, Mladen Petric, Ashkan Dejagah and Hugo Rodallega.

'Of course we will always look to strengthen, but the January transfer period is not an ideal one.

'The good players will stay at their clubs or you can't afford them because clubs are asking too much money, but we will come up with something.

'We always look to strengthen the squad because we lost players.'

Jol did prove successful in last January's transfer window, utilising his knowledge of the Bundesliga to good effect by bringing in Pavel Pogrebnyak.

The Russia international was out of favour at Stuttgart but filled the void left by Bobby Zamora's move to QPR, helping Fulham to a ninth-place finish.

Two weeks after the window closed, Jol also brought in former Real Madrid midfielder Mahamadou Diarra.

Unlike Pogrebnyak, who moved on to Reading, the Malian is still at Craven Cottage and Jol is having to plan for his absence in the new year.

Plenty to ponder: Fulham boss Jol

Diarra's form at Fulham has seen him return to the national team set-up, meaning he may well soon be heading to the African nations Cup.

'We'll look to strengthen the squad because if Diarra goes I can do nothing about it,' Jol said. 'As it is now he will go to the African Nations Cup.

'He was so good for me last year because a lot of older players left the club. He changed the dressing room.

'I can remember him when he was 18 he was a revelation. He started in Crete and then came to Holland with Vitesse.

'There won't be a lot of players in Europe who will stay at Real Madrid for five years so that is how good he is.

'It was a gamble because he was 30 so it's important to keep him fit.'

they showed footage of Joey Barton's cringing French accent live on

The footage of Barton, who is on loan

hide behind paper notes on the desk to try and mask her laughing.
Co-presenter Jim White didn't seem to help.

The transfer deadline day favourite

giggles that had got the better of Gallacher.

White is arguably more convincing
with his take on the accent and using it was keen to point out to Barton
that he is a long way off mastering the French language.

Forget Robin van Persie… Dimitar Berbatov is signing of the summer, says Tony Pulis

What about RVP, Tony Stoke boss Pulis claims Berbatov is signing of the summer (but we're not sure Sir Alex will agree…)

UPDATED:

16:58 GMT, 23 November 2012

Tony Pulis feels Fulham's Dimitar Berbatov has been one of the stand-out stars of the Barclays Premier League season so far.

Berbatov fell out of favour at Manchester United, and joined the Cottagers on transfer deadline day in August after he was replaced by Robin van Persie.

Berbatov became Martin Jol's most high-profile recruit of the summer. And a day later the 31-year-old Bulgarian striker made his debut as a substitute, since when he has scored five goals in seven starts, and Pulis – whose side host Fulham at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday – has no doubt Jol has made a very shrewd move.

'He is a good manager and he is very well respected around the country,' Pulis said of his counterpart.

'Fulham have some good players and I think Berbatov has been the outstanding buy for them. 'He is the glue that knits it all together.

'He looks as if he is really, really enjoying himself having found a home where he is the main player. Looking at him, he is just showing the class that he possesses.'

Van Persie is behind only Luis Suarez in terms of league goals this season, but asked if there had been a better signing made by a Premier League club than Berbatov over the summer, Pulis said: 'It doesn't look like it at the moment.'

He added: 'I think our supporters will see one of the best players in the Premier League on Saturday on the ball.

'He can win games by himself and has been a great signing for Martin. 'Berbatov is one of the outstanding players in the Premier League this year. It is worth the admission fee just to see him play.'

Fulham, currently ninth in the table on 16 points, have been free-scoring in general, netting 25 times in their 12 top-flight games this term.

They have also conceded 22 goals, though, and their defence will be missing suspended team captain Brede Hangeland tomorrow after the Norway international was sent off in last Sunday's 3-1 home defeat to Sunderland.

Pulis, whose Stoke side are 14th on 13 points, is aware of the Cottagers' apparent strengths and weaknesses, but is not about to make any assumptions ahead of the clash at the Britannia Stadium.

'I've watched their games and they have conceded goals, but they don't half look good going forward,' Pulis said. 'We know it is going to be a tough game.

'We respect everybody in the Premier League and we certainly won't be taking Fulham for granted, whatever anybody says about their attacking, defending or whatever.'

Stephane Sessegnon was distracted by transfer rumours, says Martin O"Neill

Sessegnon was distracted by transfer rumours but he's getting back to his best, says O'Neill

UPDATED:

19:42 GMT, 22 November 2012

Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill believes Stephane Sessegnon was affected by rumours of a move away from the north east, despite signing a new contract in the summer.

The Benin international scored his first goal of the season in last week’s 3-1 win at Fulham and finally started to show the ability which made him the club’s player of last season.

O’Neill, who has persevered with the midfielder despite his alarming loss of form, believes Sessegnon, and England winger Adam Johnson are now starting to repay his faith. But he admitted Sessegnon’s indifferent start to this season had been perplexing for player and manager.

Back to his best: Stephane Sessegnon is regaining his form

Back to his best: Stephane Sessegnon is regaining his form

O’Neill said: 'He was somewhat sidelined by being touted around major football clubs.

'The view was that he may not be at this football club because some of the major clubs from abroad would be in for him. It didn’t happen and at that stage, I think there was a bit of disappointment on his part. He did get a little sidetracked by all the furore that surrounded him.

'If your head does get turned by possible promises of being taken, here, there and everywhere, and it doesn’t materialise, maybe it sets you back a bit.

'Also his family was a bit unsettled but we have resolved that now and hopefully we are seeing signs of returning to form. He has come back, signed a contract and he wants to go and prove himself again.

'Overall he is a danger and it is really very good to see him back to form. In training you would not believe he would be suffering any sort confidence loss.’

Former Paris Saint Germain ace Sessegnon, who is currently enjoying his longest run at a single club, was linked with a summer return to the French capital, as well as attracting interest from Tottenham and Arsenal, before they signed Santi Cazorla in a 15million deal from Malaga.

O’Neill sees many comparisons with the Spanish midfielder who has lit up the Premier League since his summer arrival.

He added: 'Cazorla is really a fantastic player. Players like him are a necessity, not a luxury.

'Sess has ability to sit in that bracket and the natural talent to be in there but more consistency would be great. There was little period last year when he was at the edge of penalty area when you always felt something might happen.

'This year he has been bit frustrated with his own decision making more than anything else but the game against Everton in the first half, and that goal at Fulham, should give him that boost now.

'What I would say is that Sess playing well is so, so important for us because he can cause problems and he makes other teams start to think about it.’

Fernando Torres paid for his pitiful performance at West Bromwich on Saturday and Di Matteo knew the evening would end in yet another change in personnel. On this occasion, in the office of the Chelsea manager.

But Di Matteo sensed the end was coming long before his 42nd and last game in charge. As early as last summer, when he dared question the strength of Torres’ ambition at Chelsea, the European Cup-winning coach was left in no doubt about who is actually in charge at Stamford Bridge.

When he was finally appointed ‘manager and first-team coach’, 25 days after landing club football’s greatest prize in Munich’s Allianz Arena, Di Matteo presented Roman Abramovich with a list of summer transfer targets.

Radamel Falcao, the free-scoring striker with 36 goals in 50 appearances for Atletico Madrid in his first season in Spain, was at the top of it.

But before Chelsea’s manager could even make a case for the Colombian striker he was cut short. Abramovich told him he already had a world-class finisher and the message was clear: Torres was to play. It was a message that was repeated on an almost daily basis.

That was life at Chelsea for Di Matteo, operating under almost intolerable conditions long before he axed Torres ahead of the shocking 3-0 defeat against Juventus. He knew he had to select Torres. It was the owner’s wish. But he also knew there were problems using Torres when the players Abramovich had brought in did not suit the Spaniard’s style of play.

Di Matteo had run the analysis on Torres, asking the club’s technical team for a breakdown of the 81 goals he scored for Liverpool before his move south to London.

When Di Matteo went through the detail, a worrying pattern emerged that convinced him Chelsea did not have the personnel to accommodate his game.

At Anfield, 56 of his goals (69 per cent) were engineered by defence-splitting passes, usually from Steven Gerrard or Xabi Alonso. At Chelsea, players like Juan Mata, Frank Lampard, Ramires and John Mikel Obi — together with new arrivals Oscar and Eden Hazard – preferred to pass their way through the opposition. They did not spring opposition defences and Di Matteo was already beginning to doubt whether Torres was committed to the Chelsea project.

Di Matteo’s relationship with technical director Michael Emenalo was already strained, but it was stretched to the limit by the pressure to get Torres among the goalscorers.

Some sympathised, but others were openly questioning the motivation of a striker who was once regarded as the best finisher in world football.

Over bar the shouting: Di Matteo patrols the touchline at the Juventus Stadium, aware that his time at Chelsea is up

Upstairs in his office at the club’s Cobham training centre and puffing on cigarettes out on the balcony, Di Matteo frequently discussed Torres’ form with assistants Eddie Newton and Steve Holland.

Robbie's Record

It hardly helped that the 50million striker had confided in team-mates that he was unhappy at the club, even saying as much to a Spanish journalist on the night Chelsea lifted the European Cup.

But a new season amounted to a new start for Di Matteo and Abramovich was quick to apply the same approval index rating he uses to judge every manager — Champions League progress.

The day after Chelsea drew 2-2 with Juventus in the opening fixture in Group E, when goals from Arturo Vidal and Fabio Quagliarella secured a point for the Italians, Abramovich arrived unannounced at the training ground.

He asked Di Matteo, his coaching staff and some of the players if they still had the desire for another crack at the competition after last season’s incredible triumph.

By 3am on Wednesday, Di Matteo was clearing the decks of his spacious office after being sacked at the training ground by chairman Bruce Buck and chief executive Ron Gourlay, just over an hour after they arrived back from defeat in Turin.

He knew it was coming, saying farewell and shaking hands with the players in the dressing room at the Juventus Stadium.

The incredible stats

86m: Chelsea have spent approximately 86million since 2004 in compensation for managers — more than Everton’s entire net spend since the Premier League began.

8 months: The average life span for a manager under Abramovich. Only Mourinho and Ancelotti lasted more than a year.

9: Abramovich has now had as many managers in his nine-year reign as United have had since 1937.

7: Chelsea have sacked seven managers since 2005 and won seven trophies.

These were private moments and a significant number of the team apologised to Di Matteo for failing to recreate the spirit that led to FA Cup and European glory last season. Three days earlier, in the dressing room at The Hawthorns, the fingers had been pointed by the players in a post-match inquest following the 2-1 defeat. It sounded explosive.

Holland, the assistant manager, had arrived at the ground with a black eye and a cut underneath his left cheek. After the fireworks that followed the final whistle, it is a wonder there were no further casualties.

Chelsea’s season was beginning to fall apart and the situation was irretrievable even then.

Abramovich had to be talked out of firing Di Matteo on Saturday by his close circle of advisors, but the Champions League clash with Juve was the tipping point.

On Sunday the players came in for a warm-down at Cobham and flew on a delayed flight to Turin on Monday after Di Matteo held a short meeting with coaching staff.

In Turin, Chelsea’s players picked up on Di Matteo’s distress and it transmitted to the squad in a subdued and sometimes directionless training session at Juve’s stadium on Monday evening.

They knew he was about to make a tactical switch, but the message was muddled and there was uncertainty among the players as they chatted in hushed tones over dinner in the team hotel.

In the team meeting at lunchtime on Tuesday, when Di Matteo announced that Hazard would play up front instead of Torres, this was met with the tacit approval of many of the players.

On the field they failed spectacularly, however, and Di Matteo, who spent 45 minutes talking to his Italian advisor in the tunnel after the defeat, knew the game was up.

As they all got on the airport bus which delivered them to their Titan Airways flight — which finally took off at 1.45am from northern Italy — the atmosphere was tense.

By that point Di Matteo and Newton, both in sharp, grey suits, were hanging on for grim life as the bus, with Buck and Gourlay in attendance, made the short trip to the aircraft steps.

Ruthless: Roman Abramovich wielded the axe for the seventh time since 2005

Ashley Cole giggled a couple of times. Petr Cech, a decent guy, made small talk with the kit men. Torres, who was reading a book entitled Leyenda (Legend) on the trip out to Turin, fiddled with his phone.

Di Matteo knew that his number was up, unable to motivate a striker who has scored just four goals in the Barclays Premier League this season.

Even Torres’ solitary Champions League strike was a fluke, a ricochet that somehow rebounded into the net of Andriy Pyatov in the 3-2 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk on November 7.

Undoubtedly Di Matteo under-estimated the owner’s obsession with winning silverware. Abramovich has not forgotten Jose Mourinho gesturing to him at Wembley, counting the trophies with his fingers when Chelsea won the FA Cup in 2007.

Chelsea started this season with a chance to win seven trophies, but the champions of Europe had already surrendered the Community Shield against Manchester City and were soundly beaten by Atletico Madrid in the Super Cup in Monaco.

Abramovich, who rarely travels to away games because he does not like to conform to stuffy boardroom etiquette by wearing a suit, became increasingly agitated as Di Matteo’s summer target finished them off with a hat-trick. Falcao was fantastic that night.

Golden boot: Radamel Falcao was in sensational form as the Atletico Madrid striker hit a hat-trick in Monaco

Di Matteo’s team were also adjusting to a refined playing system as they encouraged Cech to throw the ball out to his back four instead of launching it forward from his penalty area.

Off the field Di Matteo skilfully and diplomatically handled delicate situations, especially after John Terry was banned by the FA for four games and fined 220,000 for racially insulting Anton Ferdinand.

The incident did not even happen on Di Matteo’s watch — Andre Villas-Boas was manager at the time — but the Italian attempted to protect the reputation of the club.

Even last Sunday, his preparations for the trip to Turin were disrupted when Ashley Cole was unexpectedly called to an interview with the FA over the allegations against referee Mark Clattenburg.

Suddenly the FA’s compliance team were swarming all over the training ground again, taking Mikel, Ramires and Juan Mata into neutralised zones for hours of taped interviews.

Casting a shadow: Di Matteo felt the race row, involving referee Mark Clattenburg (centre) and John Mikel Obi (right) had an impact on recent results

Di Matteo has deep reservations about Chelsea’s complaint, and, naturally, believes that it has affected their recent results.

They made the allegation two hours after they were beaten 3-2 at Stamford Bridge by Manchester United, finishing the game with nine men after the dismissals of Torres and Branislav Ivanovic.

Since then they have picked up two points from the last 12 in the Premier League and require something of a miracle to avoid the humiliation of exiting the group stage of the Champions League.

That brutal reality dawned on Di Matteo when Chelsea arrived back at the training ground in the dead of night after the Turin trip.

Torres was one of the first off the bus, jumping straight into his car and slipping on his tracksuit top to beat the near-freezing temperatures.

By then, Di Matteo knew it was time to get his coat.

UPDATED:

Didier Deschamps has hit back at Andre Villas-Boas as the war of words between the two over Hugo Lloris intensified.

Deschamps has been at odds with Villas-Boas ever since the Portuguese signed the France goalkeeper from Lyon for 8million on transfer deadline day.

The France head coach is unhappy that Lloris, who also captains the national team, is not a regular starter at Tottenham, where he is in competition with Brad Friedel.

Blunder: Lloris made a mistake for Spurs in the Europa League last night

Last week Deschamps claimed Villas-Boas' rotation policy could have a detrimental effect on the goalkeeper's form. The Spurs manager shrugged off the claims, saying of Deschamps' comments: 'It goes in one ear and comes out the other.'

Deschamps responded with a similar barb on Monday.

No 1: Lloris captains France

No 1: Lloris captains France

'I have two ears as well. What he (Villas-Boas) says has the same effect on me,' Deschamps was quoted as saying at a France press conference reported by L'Equipe.

Lloris has started six games for Spurs, but only one of them has come in the Barclays Premier League. The Frenchman was partly to blame for a howling error in Tottenham's 3-1 win over Maribor last Thursday, and 41-year-old Friedel was preferred for Sunday's game at Manchester City.

Deschamps, whose team travel to Italy
for a friendly on Wednesday, has been encouraged to see Lloris getting
more game time of late but also claimed the stopper is not playing as
much as he would like to.

'We are not talking of a player who does not play,' Deschamps said.

'Since he played his excellent match against Spain (France's 1-1 draw last month), he has kept goal three times.

'Hugo is playing one match per week. Of course, he would like to play more, and it is not the case for the moment,' the former Chelsea midfielder was quoted as saying on Eurosport's website.
