Tottenham are putting their faith in the once controversial blood-spinning technique to speed up Gareth Bale's recovery from an ankle injury.

Bale's season looked to be over last Thursday after the Welshman sustained a serious looking ankle injury in Spurs' 2-2 draw against Basle.

But after a scan on Friday, it emerged
that Bale would only miss two games – Sunday's 2-2 draw against Everton
and the Europa League quarter-final second leg clash in Switzerland on
Thursday night.

Manager Andre Villas-Boas is understandably keen to have Bale fit again as quickly as possible and club doctors will use the blood-spinning method to aid his recovery from injury as Tottenham look to get their star man back on the field for the visit of Manchester City on April 21.

The technique, which was also used on Jermain Defoe earlier in the season as he struggled to overcome a pelvic injury, involves a small sample of a person's blood being injected out of the body before it is spun to increase the concentration of the growth hormone.

The blood sample is then injected into the athlete's problem area which can help an injury heal five times faster.

Blood-spinning first came under the spotlight in 2005 when Chelsea, then managed by Jose Mourinho, were warned by the World Anti-Doping Agency that their use of the method to speed up Arjen Robben's recovery from injury may be illegal – but it is now more commonly used in sport.

Meanwhile, there was better news on the injury front for Tottenham on Monday night as Younes Kaboul made his long-awaited return from a knee injury.

The French defender has not played since the opening-day defeat by Newcastle, but he is on course to play a part in Spurs' crucial Premier League run-in after making his return to action against West Ham Under 21s on Monday.

Rafa Benitez has revealed that Chelsea will be without Ashley Cole and Gary Cahill for at least two weeks.

Cole was rested for the Premier League defeat by Southampton but returned to face Manchester United in Chelsea’s FA Cup quarter-final victory at Stamford Bridge.

But he injured his hamstring in the opening quarter of the match and was replaced by Ryan Bertrand – who may end up having to play four times in a week.

Ahead of Thursday night’s match
against Rubin Kazan, Benitez said: ‘I’d say at least two weeks for both
Ashley Cole and Gary Cahill. We are without Oriol Romeu as you know and
Demba Ba cannot play. That’s it.

‘You train to do little things because you do not have much time and you cannot push too hard.

‘We concentrate one game at a time so we pick a team who can win any game and concentrate on this game. They have to be ready for any game.

‘Since I came and with the fixtures we have I think we’re doing really well.’

The victory over United has proved a huge boost for the under-fire manager, at a club who have become somewhat FA Cup specialists.

‘We proved against a team at the top of the table and a manager with the most trophies in England that we can compete against anyone if we have the time and players available. One game every three days, you cannot do everything you want to do. I’m happy with what we’re doing. It was an important game for us. We did really well against United and it shows we can reach this level. We played against a very good team.’

Bertrand added: ‘Ashley’s injury means it’s a chance for me to come in and play in the next few games but it’s important to focus on the next game and make sure we get the right result.

‘As a player you want to win each game you go into and as far in every competition as you can.'

Asked about Rubin, he said: ‘They’ve done well, they’ve knocked out the holders and they will give us tough competition.’

Follow Sportsmail's coverage of England U21's clash with Austria at Brighton's Amex Stadium, with kick-off at 7.45.

Having wrapped up a record eighth win on the bounce – every one a clean sheet – with a comfortable 3-0 win over Romania on Thursday night, Stuart Pearce's men are going for cloud nine tonight.

It's the final chance for England's young lions to impress in a bid to make this summer's European championships in Israel.

Join the debate by Tweeting @charlieskillen or you can email me your views at [email protected]

19:43 …and here's God Save the Queen.

19:41 Kick-off is in about five minutes, we're just hearing the Austrian national anthem…

19:39 Stuart Pearce just spoke to ESPN before the game about the side's lead-up to the match and the make-up of tonight's team:

'We've had a brilliant week,' said Pearce.

'After Thursday, the way the players have been in training has been outstanding.

'We need to top off the week with a good result and a good performance here.'

On not selecting usual captain Jordan Henderson for tonight's starting line-up:

'I know what Jordan can do. He's an outstanding player and leader of men at this level and I'm not sure how much I would learn from playing him here.

'It was more important to keep Nathaniel Chalobah in the side after what he did on Thursday.'

That seems like Henderson is a certainty to be part of a growing Liverpool contingent in Pearce's squad.

19:26 And let's not forget – victory here will be Stuart Pearce's side's ninth on the spin. Friday's triumph over Romania sealed a record eighth win, and the young Lions have achieved that without conceding a single goal. More of the same tonight, please…

19:25 The action for England U21s this summer in Israel kicks off on June 5 when they face Italy, before playing Norway on June 8 and facing the hosts June 11. Performances in this game will be key to making up the squad that travels to the tournament.

19:18 So Wilfried Zaha is not in the squad tonight – but he's a dead cert for the European Championships squad. He's returned to Crystal Palace for dental work. This gives a chance for the more borderline players to make an impact before Stuart Pearce names his squad for the summer tournament in Israel.

19.15 Evening everyone, and welcome to Sportsmail's live coverage of England U21s clash with Austria.

Kick-off is in about half an hour, but let's start with tonight's line-up:

England Jason Steele, Andre Wisdom, Danny Rose, Jason Lowe, Tom Lees, Craig Dawson (capt), Andros Townsend, Nathaniel Chalobah, Connor Wickham, Jonjo Shelvey, Raheem Sterling.

Subs Adam Smith, Jack Butland, Jack Robinson, Nathaniel Clyne, Michael Keane, Jordan Henderson, Josh McEachran, Nathan Delfouneso, Marvin Sordell, Tom Carroll.

Romania Richard Strebinger, Florian Neuhold, Kevin Wimmer, Tobias Kainz, Michael Sabitzer, Raphael Holzhauser (capt) Robert Zulj, Patrick Farkas, Simon Piesinger, Lukas Spendlhofer

Subs Christoph Riegler, Christian Schilling, Martin Ziegl, Daniel Offenbacher, Michael Grogoritsch, Mattias Maak, Dominik Starkl.

Stan Collymore has urged Fernando Torres to leave Chelsea for his own good.

The former Liverpool and Aston Villa striker believes the Spaniard is finding his time at Stamford Bridge dark, desperate and lonely.

Torres, who cost 50million, failed to flourish under Carlo Ancelotti, Andre Villas-Boas and Roberto Di Matteo.

Now interim manager Rafa Benitez, who helped Torres find the best form of his career at Liverpool, cannot help his compatriot to get back among the goals.

'It’s all over for the striker now. His confidence is beyond shot,' wrote Collymore in his Sunday People column.

'He will put on the blue of Chelsea every day and he will hate it, as he will the daily drive to Cobham for training.'

Collymore continued: 'I have said this before and I have to say it again: It’s time to go, Fernando. For your sake, and yours alone.'

Torres was dropped to the bench against West Brom on Saturday, coming on as a substitute for 10 minutes.

January signing Demba Ba played in his stead and scored the winning goal.

Torres is expected to start for Chelsea on Thursday night when they take on Steaua Bucharest in the Europa League because Ba is cup tied.

David Beckham has openly admitted that his move to Paris St Germain hinged on his ability to sell shirts.

The former England captain joined the French giants in January before making his debut against Marseille on Sunday.

And speaking on Canal Plus show Grande Journal on Thursday night, Beckham revealed one of his main jobs is now to shift club merchandise.

'If I can help to sell lots of shirts, no problem,' said Beckham. 'It's great to see so many people wearing my shirt.

'In most of the clubs where I've been, I heard the same thing, that I've come to sell shirts.'

Meanwhile, Beckham, who was busy endearing himself to the French public with an appearance alongside the legendary Zinedine Zidane on Thursday, expects Cristiano Ronaldo to be at his best when he returns to Old Trafford with Real Madrid next week.

The Spanish champions travel to Manchester United for the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday and Beckham, who was replaced by Ronaldo at United and eventually in Madrid, believes the atmosphere will inspire the Portuguese on his first appearance at the club since his 2009 departure.

'When you go back, you enjoy the occasion, of course, and I am sure it will inspire Cristiano,' said Beckham, who first played against United when with AC Milan in 2010, seven years after leaving.

'Many things inspire great players and him going back will be a special night for him. 'The fans love him and it will be a great occasion.'

Forest return: Davies

Billy Davies has returned to Nottingham Forest for a second spell as manager, becoming their third boss this season.

Davies and his representatives were in negotiations with Forest chairman Fawaz Al-Hasawi on Wednesday and the Championship club announced it on Thursday afternoon.

'I'm delighted to welcome Billy back to our club and really look forward to working closely with him,' chairman Fawaz Al Hasawi said. 'Billy has unfinished business with the Reds and we know how hungry he is for success. In returning to the City Ground we believe his leadership will help us fulfil our ambition of making it to the Premier League.

'Billy is a Forest legend who needs no introduction to our loyal fans. We know how excited he is to pick up where he left off last time and we will back him 110 per cent – this is a very exciting appointment for us.'

Davies described being back at the club as a 'dream come true' and is looking forward to officially beginning his role on Monday.

'It is a privilege and an honour to be back in charge of the Reds. As my new friend Fawaz says, I have unfinished business here at Forest and I am relishing this great opportunity to return Forest to its former glory.

'My tenure at the City Ground was cut short last time and I can't wait to get my boots back on and training the lads.

'We have a great squad and I know I can get the best from them. Coming home to the Reds is a dream come true.'

The 48-year-old Scot was dismissed by Forest's old regime in June 2011.

After steering the club away from relegation following his appointment in January 2009 and then masterminding successive play-off campaigns during his first spell at the City Ground, Davies is on record as stating that he has 'unfinished business' at the club.

Davies succeeds Alex McLeish and Sean O'Driscoll at the City Ground.

McLeish resigned his post earlier this week just over a month after taking over from O'Driscoll, who was sacked on Boxing Day.

Arsenal target David Villa scores two great goals

David Villa showed Arsene Wenger exactly what he was missing as he scored two goals of real quality in Barcelona's 5-0 Copa del Rey win over Cordoba on Thursday night.

Arsenal have been heavily linked with the 31-year-old forward, but Wenger is believed to have reservations over a move for the Spaniard, as Villa is likely to be costly in both transfer fee and wages.

Earlier this month Arsenal were quoted a price of 16million to bring Villa to the Emirates but Wenger does not usually spend big on players over 30, and has added concerns over Villa's long-term fitness as he suffered a broken leg last season.

Villa would also likely expect wages of at least 130,00-per week, which could be another stumbling block in any potential deal for the player.

His first goal tonight saw him beat two players on the byline before a neat chip over the Cordoba keeper, while his second was a very smart low drive down to the keeper's left.

Despite his high price tag and injury concerns, bringing Villa to England may not be as risky as it sounds.

In limited playing time this season he has seven goals in all competitions, while he has 53 in 85 appearances for Spain and 28 league goals in 61 games for Barcelona.

Villa himself is reported to be desperate for the move to go ahead, but Barca president Sandro Rosell ruled out a move just this week.

Speaking to Catalan radio station RAC1 on Tuesday, Rosell said: 'I completely rule out the transfer of Villa during the winter market.

'He is ours and we need him, there is a lot of the season left.'

Villa's two goals, as well as goals from Thiago Alcantara and two from Alexis Sanchez, sealed a 7-0 aggregate win over Second division Cordoba that sent Barcelona into the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey.

Henning Berg sacked by Blackburn

Berg sacked by Blackburn after just TWO months as Ewood Park crisis deepens

UPDATED:

13:28 GMT, 27 December 2012

Henning Berg has been sacked by Blackburn after only two months in the job at Ewood Park.

The former Rovers player replaced Steve Kean in September but has not been able to get the club firing since taking over.

Blackburn lie 17th in the table and Indian owners Venky's were hoping for a promotion push after investing in the summer.

Tim Sherwood, Tottenham's technical co-ordinator, is one of the names being considered for the vacancy.

Out: Henning Berg watched his side lose 1-0 at Middlesbrough on Boxing Day

Out: Henning Berg watched his side lose 1-0 at Middlesbrough on Boxing Day

Berg's impact

When Kean left the club were third. Today, they are 17th.

A year before he took the job, Berg said it would be 'madness' to work under Venky's and that 'no manager with credibility' would take the job on.'

Maybe he should have taken his own advice.

Games played: 10
Games won: One
Games lost: Six
Games drawn: Three
Goals scored: 10
Goals against: 18
Highest victory: 4-1 v Peterborough, November 17
Worst defeat: 4-1 v Cardiff, December 7
Win percentage: 10 per cent

Former boss Kean resigned at the end of September, claiming his position at the club was untenable.

But when he left, Blackburn were third and had only sunk to new depths under Berg.

Reports were circulating in the Indian
press on Thursday morning, with Venky's chief Balaji Rao saying: 'We
have not been doing well and dropping points and losing matches quite
often.'

Berg paid the price for Blackburn's awful form by becoming the second boss to be fired in the space of 24 hours after Nottingham Forest axed Sean O'Driscoll.

A Blackburn statement read: 'Blackburn Rovers FC has announced the departure of manager Henning Berg, assistant manager Eric Black, first team coach Iain Brunskill and goalkeeping coach Bobby Mimms with immediate effect.

'This decision has been taken following a very disappointing sequence of results. The club thanks the four men for their efforts and wishes them every success for the future.'

Pressure had been building at the
club and just a couple of weeks ago Berg had stormed out of the
Christmas party after he was made to wear a stocking on his head and
dance on stage.

It was
hoped the party for the players and more than 200 staff in a suite at
Ewood would lift morale but it backfired spectacularly.

Although Blackburn's owners have been
criticised heavily since taking over in Lancashire, they believe they
are right to act in a bid to halt the club's slide.

When the DJ decided to play some games, one of the club’s executives volunteered Berg to go up on stage.

The
43-year-old Norwegian reluctantly wore the Christmas stocking but grew
visibly angry and uncomfortable when he was made to dance as well.

Tottenham keeper and former Blackburn hero Brad Friedel tweeted:

'I can't believe what I'm seeing going on at Blackburn. Giving a mgr 2 months I guess football never ceases to amaze at times.'

The final straw came when someone attempted to put a Michael Jackson wig on his head. Berg ripped off the stocking and left the stage.

Meanwhile, Rovers Action Group secretary Mark Fish admitted his 'great delight' at the decision to let Berg go.

He told Sky Sports News: 'He was a fantastic player for the club, but for whatever reason it just didn't work out for him here.

'It's difficult to say what. Perhaps the expectations from the fans, outside influences maybe. Henning Berg just didn't have the nous to get the job done I don't know.

'He just couldn't get the team playing, he couldn't get them fighting. But someone needs to come out now and hold their hands up.

'There were a lot of people involved in the process. A lot of good, better candidates were overlooked for this position.

'But they (Venkys) seemed determined to bring in an ex (Blackburn) player and it just hasn't worked out the way they had hoped.

'Why didn't Berg bring in his own coaching staff It was my understanding that he would bring his own people in with him.

'But as it ended up he was left with Steve Kean's men to help out. Someone has to come out and explain why this has happened.'

When asked about the remainder of the season, Fish was adamant that Rovers can still achieve their goal of promotion back to the Premier League.

'Do I think we can do it Yes. Absolutely, we've got the ability in the squad to still get the job done. You've only got to look at Reading last season.

'We need to have one of those runs. Also, the stands are empty. We need to be picking up results and getting people back through the gates again.'
