Milan tried to sign Tevez in January but the deal collapsed after the two clubs failed to agree a fee.

The Italian giants are planning a summer overhaul of their squad with Rino Gattuso, Pippo Inzhaghi, Mark Van Bommel and Alessandro Nesta all leaving in the summer.

Ruud van Nistelrooy retires

End of the Ruud for Van Nistelrooy as former United star announces retirement

Former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has announced his retirement from football at the age of 35.

The Malaga striker has suffered a difficult year since arriving in the south of Spain from Hamburg last summer, scoring just five times in 32 appearances.

However, he did help guide Malaga to their first ever top-four finish and thereby ensure Champions League football for the first time in their history.

Van Nistelrooy told a press conference: 'Yesterday was my final game as a professional footballer. I wanted to play in the Champions League, but it is the moment to leave.

'I have arrived at my physical limit and I can't play at the maximum level. I couldn't have had a better send-off than this.

'I feel happy that I am the one taking this decision. I would like to thank Malaga, the technical and medical staff for an unforgettable year.

'I am proud to have won collective and individual titles, but my greatest satisfaction was to be able to work day after day, year after year.'

Van Nistelrooy also paid tribute to those people who supported him during his career, which included spells with PSV Eindhoven, United and Real Madrid.

'I would like to thank Malaga, my team-mates, the coaches, the physios, (sporting director) Antonio Fernandez, Fernando Hierro and the fans for this unforgettable year,' said the Dutchman.

'I would also like to thank the fans of Den Bosch, Heerenveen, PSV, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Hamburg.'

Van Nistelrooy's career began in his homeland with Den Bosch before moves to Heerenveen and PSV Eindhoven, where he made his name.

After securing the Eredivisie Golden Boot in both the 1998/99 and 1999/2000 seasons, he seemed set to join Manchester United in a near 19 million move.

However, United called off the transfer due to fitness concerns and within days Van Nistelrooy ruptured cruciate knee ligaments during a training session.

That injury did not dissuade United manager Sir Alex Ferguson though, as he went back for Van Nistelrooy the following summer and was duly rewarded as the striker delivered 150 goals in 219 games in his five seasons in Manchester and guided them to the title in 2002/03.

However, Van Nistelrooy's time in north-west England ended when he fell down the pecking order and was snapped up by Real Madrid in the summer of 2006.

He hit the ground running in the Spanish capital as 53 goals in two seasons saw Real capture back-to-back Primera Division titles.

But once again injuries took their toll as he missed almost the entire 2008/09 campaign with a meniscus problem and then found himself behind Raul, Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema the following season.

An 18-month spell at Hamburg followed before returning to Spain and Malaga for his final season as a professional.

Van Nistelrooy also bagged 35 goals in 70 international appearances for Holland, including strikes at Euro 2004, World Cup 2006 and Euro 2008 and is the second highest all-time goalscorer in the Champions League with 54 from 81 appearances.

His final appearance for Malaga resulted in a 1-0 victory over Sporting Gijon.

Papiss Cisse has pledged his future to Newcastle United despite missing out on Champions League football.

The Magpies finished an impressive fifth under manager Alan Pardew but had a chance of qualifying for Europe's premier competition going into the final day.

In the event, wins for Arsenal and Tottenham ensured Newcastle had to settle for the Europa League after they were beaten 3-1 at Everton.

Wenger to hold RVP talks before Euro 2012 after Gunners secure third-place

Arsene Wenger hopes Arsenal's achievement of clinching Champions League football for a 15th successive season can help the club keep star striker Robin van Persie.

Arsenal's 3-2 win over West Brom at West Brom today ensured they finished above north London rivals Tottenham, taking third spot in the Barclays Premier League.

The success represents a major turnaround in fortunes for Arsenal who were in 17th place in October after losing four of their opening seven games, with some fans calling for Wenger to be sacked.

Van Persie ended the season with 30 league goals as Yossi Benayoun, Andre Santos and Laurent Koscielny netted against the Baggies.

Wenger said: 'Will Champions League football help to keep Van Persie It makes it easier to attract good players and keep them.

'The intention is to speak with him before he leaves for the Dutch camp (for Euro 2012).'

Wenger added: 'I'm proud of the season. The mental solidity, the unity and solidarity inside the club has been tested. We didn't show any weakness and kept united.

'In the end, we came back. It's a good lesson for everyone. I told everyone to keep doing what they are doing and in the end we got there.

'I cannot say the season has been a failure. We have qualified for the 15th time. Only three clubs have done that in Europe. That means it's not as easy as it looks.

'We were 17th in the league and in the first seven games we had lost four of them. When you have played seven games, there are 31 to go. It's very difficult to imagine you can finish third.

'But we have had an exceptional run after our Champions League exit.

'I think if you look at the season as a whole in the last 16 games, we have lost only twice. We have created a fantastic run. In the end we finished with 70 points. That is respectable.'

Qatari club Al Sadd have confirmed the signing of former Spain striker Raul from the start of next season.

The 34-year-old announced last month that he would be leaving Schalke at the end of the campaign, despite having proved a hit in Gelsenkirchen since arriving from Real Madrid in 2010.

His destination was unknown, but Al Sadd said on their website that he will be their player for the 2012/13 campaign.

He will be unveiled at a press conference on Sunday.

'Al Sadd will hold a press conference on Sunday, May 13 to present Spanish star Raul Gonzalez, who is contracted to the team for the 2012/13 season,' the club statement read.

Raul revealed at a press conference on April 19 that he would play his club football outside Europe for the first time next season, adding that the time was right to move to 'a less competitive league' after turning down the offer of a new deal from Schalke.

He insisted being able to spend more time with his family was the key factor in his decision, and that his eventual destination would depend more on them than on money.

'I definitely have the self-confidence to play in a tough league, but it is more about the family,' he said.

'I have not been able to spend much time with them lately. The Bundesliga is so demanding that you cannot spend so long with them.

'We will now look at the offers and see what gives me the most time for family life.'

Raul attained legendary status during his many years as a first-team regular at Real Madrid, and left the Bernabeu holding club records for appearances (741) and goals (323).

Alan Pardew has been named manager of
the year and led Newcastle to the verge of the Champions League – yet
he still fears he won't be able to keep some of his top players.

Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse and Yohan
Cabaye are three of the stars who have sent Newcastle soaring into the
top six – and that has put the players on the radar of Europe's top
clubs.

Price of success: Alan Pardew fears an exodus

'It's impossible to restrict Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester City from coming in for one of our players,' said Pardew.

'We have players who are not on the salaries these top clubs can offer.'

Ba has scored 17 goals in 39 appearances this season after arriving on a free transfer from West Ham.

The 26-year-old Senegal striker was linked with a move away Tyneside in January, with reports that a buy-out clause in his contract would force Newcastle to accept an offer as low as 5million.

'Demba's release clause has been widely publicised. There is some truth to it and some untruth,' said Pardew.

'There is a clause there. There is a situation with his contract and we are in talks with him and his agent. It is not a foregone conclusion that he will stay.

'The one security I have is that Mike Ashley is a difficult seller. He is not going to let someone go for 7m – he is going to want top, top money.

'But, if Yohan Cabaye gets a call from Manchester United and they tell him he is going to be the next Paul Scholes, I am not going to be able to stop him.

Bye-bye Cabaye: Manchester United may come calling

'It is going to cost Manchester United a shed-load of money but until we have Champions League football – and we might have that by this weekend – we cannot compete with that.'

Newcastle could get into the Champions League by winning at Everton on Sunday, while hoping Arsenal or Spurs slip up and Chelsea don't beat Bayern Munich in the final on Saturday.

Even if the Newcastle manager has to settle for something less than a top-four finish, he will still look back on his first full season in charge as the best of his managerial career.

'When I finished seventh or eighth with West Ham and reached the FA Cup final it was pretty special,' said the 50-year-old Londoner.

'But I have to say that all this tops all that.

'If someone had told me before the season that we would finish above Chelsea and Liverpool and even Aston Villa in the Premier League, then I simply would not have believed them.

'But what this group of Newcastle United players have achieved this season has been nothing short of fantastic. We have competed with the top teams all season and all credit for this goes to our players.'

Pardew talked up the parts played by owner Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias.

The Newcastle manager said: 'I think the fans are warming to Mike Ashley for what he has done here. We are never going to get around the situation regarding the renaming of the stadium.

'That's uncomfortable to everyone, and probably even to Mike but it has been done in an attempt to bring more money into the club.

'We are looking to bring in some younger players because the underbelly of our side is weaker than other top teams.'

Andy Carroll from zero to hero – times have changed for Liverpool No 9

It was last Boxing Day when it appeared the game might be up for Andy Carroll.

Liverpool had been held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Blackburn Rovers and their 35million striker had, to put it mildly, underwhelmed.

Carroll had started only two of Liverpool's previous eight matches in the Barclays Premier League and had not scored since October 29 but all hopes that he would engage in some target practice against basement side Blackburn evaporated.

He ran up blind alleys, drifted into positions where he never threatened to make an impact and was so far out of sync with his strike partner Luis Suarez that many walked away from Anfield that night thinking Carroll would never flourish in a Reds shirt.

Given his dispiriting efforts occurred days before the transfer window opened, it was inevitable he ended up being linked with transfers elsewhere.

A return to Newcastle was mooted, Aston Villa and Tottenham were mentioned, but the thought of him flourishing in red was remote.

Now look at him. After terrorising John Terry twice in the space of 72 hours, Carroll is being put forward as a potential member of England's Euro 2012 squad and his performances have improved to such an extent that his critics have hastily re-evaluated their judgements.

From expensive misfit to striker of enormous potential, Carroll's encouraging finish to the campaign has offered real hope that, come next season, he will be doing what all Liverpool No 9s are supposed to do – scoring goals with monotonous regularity.

So what has changed

In a nutshell, he strips significantly fitter than he was at Christmas and has been imbued with confidence.

Carroll is a player who benefits from huge amounts of work and the spin-off of him having more start in 2012 is that he is stronger and more effective.

Testing times: Carroll had failed to live up to his billing for much of the campaign

Testing times: Carroll had failed to live up to his billing for much of the campaign

There has been a noticeable improvement in the way Carroll has been training and he looks content with his lot on Merseyside, preferring the quiet life at home with his girlfriend, Stacey, than being a regular on the city's nightclub scene.

He has been making important contributions since the end of January – his towering flick on to Dirk Kuyt created the winner against Manchester United in the FA Cup tie – and the statistics show how much of an influence he is having.

Carroll has been named as substitute 10 times since New Year's Day; of the games he has started on the bench, Liverpool have lost six – including the FA Cup final – and drawn three, with their sole victory coming against League One side Oldham in the FA Cup third round.

True, his critics will argue that some other statistics paint a different picture – he has only scored four goals in the Barclays Premier League this season and created another two.

In the cups, he scored five times and a tally of nine strikes in 46 appearances is not outstanding ratio for a striker.

Dream team: Carroll is tipped to form a productive partnership with Luis Suarez

'All the stats prove that strikers, especially target strikers, peak when they are 26,' said Liverpool's former director of football Damien Comolli.

'He is 23. He has got so much more to come. It is incredible. He is intelligent, he is dedicated, he listens, and he has got a good lifestyle.

'I don't see why he shouldn't be a big success. He is a much better player technically. I think his runs are better, he is very, very fit, and his lifestyle is very good.

'All the time I was at Liverpool and he was at Liverpool he was never caught drinking or doing stupid things. He looks after himself. Slowly but surely the perception of Carroll has changed.

'There is now genuine excitement about what he and Suarez may do next season and the talk that he may be a significant summer casualty has started to evaporate.'

'Carroll has to be a key part of this Liverpool team going forward,' said former Liverpool forward John Aldridge earlier this week.

'He can dominate defences and scare the living daylight out of them. I've been on his case but the real Andy Carroll has shown he belongs at Anfield.'

How different that statement sounds to the ones that were being made on Boxing Day.

Liverpool"s new kit – Steven Gerrard models it

That's what 25m gets you! Liverpool launch new kit after record deal with Warrior

It's fair to say Andy Carroll hasn't exactly worked out as well as hoped in terms of being the big man up top at Liverpool.

So, rather than splash out another record transfer fee for an alternative to the striker, the club have developed a kit to make even the smallest member of their team feel 7ft tall.

Model behaviour: Steven Gerrard and Pepe Reina looked dapper in their new strip

King Luis: The strip claims to make the wearer feel 7ft tall.. making little Luis Suarez the complete striker

King Luis: The strip claims to make the wearer feel 7ft tall.. making little Luis Suarez the complete striker

At least, that's what they claim.

In a mean and moody midnight release –
symptomatic of the dark clouds that have circled around the club this
season – Liverpool have unveiled the strip.

They hope it will bring
them better luck in the Premier League than that which they experienced
in a decidedly mediocre campaign this time around.

The all red garb certainly harks back to a grander day when the Anfield outfit ruled English football, drawing on the tradition of time's past.

Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez have been called upon to model the new kit, appearing alongside the words: 'It's inspired by greatness. It's modern tradition. It's unapologetically Liverpool FC. It will make you feel 7ft tall.'

The kit is the first collaboration with
Boston-based company Warrior Sports, a 25m-a-year partnership which
broke British records when its was announced last year.

Warrior, a subsidiary of New Balance,
have taken over from adidas in making a kit which has in recent years
been the fourth biggest seller around the world.

Around
900,000 are sold annually, a number only beaten by North West rivals
Manchester United.

Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona also sell more on a global scale.

If that rate continues, and the shirts really do make the wearer feel 7ft tall, we will be living in the land of the giants.

The new Liverpool kit is available through the club on pre-order
