Steven Gerrard set to live Wembley dream

Gerrard Wembley dream set to come true as Liverpool skipper eyes Carling Cup glory

Steven Gerrard finally has the chance to realise a boyhood dream this weekend and the Liverpool skipper is determined it won't turn into a nightmare under the Wembley arch.

Gerrard has captained his country at the home of English football but Sunday's Carling Cup final will be the first time he's played there for his club.

The midfielder has won two FA Cups and two League Cups with the Reds but all four victories were in Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.

Gerrard scored twice in Wales as Liverpool won an epic 2006 FA Cup final against West Ham on penalties.

It was the Reds' last major trophy.

He said: 'Every time I played for Liverpool at Cardiff and led the team out there, there was a bit of me thinking “if only this was Wembley”.

'Don't get me wrong, we had some great days in Cardiff and I've got some fantastic memories of playing at the Millennium Stadium. But I'd have preferred to have won those trophies at Wembley.'

The 31-year-old added in the Liverpool Echo: 'When growing up as a kid, I dreamed about playing in Cup finals at Wembley. Then when I became captain of Liverpool, I dreamed about leading the team out there.

Long time: Gerrard's heroics helped Liverpool lift the FA Cup at Cardiff in 2006

'To finally get the chance to achieve that will be amazing. I've experienced both the old and the new Wembley and I can tell you it's a very special place.

'You walk out and are hit by the number of people there. It's new and it's modern but the buzz is just the same as it was.

'There's the drive up to it, up Wembley Way. Instead of the twin towers, there's now the massive arch. It's a magnificent arena and one of the best I've ever played in.'

Meanwhile, Gerrard's midfield partner
Charlie Adam returns to the famous stadium for the first time since
scoring a play-off winner for Blackpool.

The
Scotland international scored with a stunning 25-yard free-kick as the
Seasiders earned promotion to the Premier League with a 3-2 victory over
Cardiff in 2010.

And the 26-year-old knows from recent experience what the less-fancied club in a final is capable of.

'When I played there in the play-off final it was a great occasion for Blackpool because we were underdogs,' he said.

'You always give respect to the opposition, no matter who you're playing. They've come a long way, they're a good side, with a good manager and they are on the right road.

'They've been in the play-offs for a number of years but they've just not had the luck to get to the Premier League – that's the difference.'

London 2012 Olympics: Stadium pitch needs 2million upgrade

Tax payers face 2m bill to upgrade Olympic Stadium pitch after Games

The pitch inside London's Olympic Stadium is not up to Premier League standards and will have to be ripped up after the Games at a cost to public funds to allow West Ham or any other club to use the venue in the top flight.

The 486million stadium has been built without the undersoil heating required to stage Premier League matches.

West Ham would have footed the bill of up to 2m to install a new pitch with undersoil heating, but its long-term tenancy agreement was ripped up last year due to legal challenges.

Instead, the Olympic Park Legacy Company has admitted that it will have to pay after the 2012 Games for the transformation of the stadium, which West Ham could end up just renting.

Barry Hearn, the chairman of League One Leyton Orient, has waged a long campaign for his club to play there after the Olympics, but said last week he believes the stadium, with a running track in place, will not be suitable for football.

Kevin Pietersen: 130 against Pakistan was my best one-day innings

Pietersen admits to best-ever one-day innings after sending Pakistan packing with terrific 130

Kevin Pietersen's match-winning 130 was the best, as well as highest, one-day international innings he has played to date.

That fair assessment came from the man himself, after he had underpinned England's pursuit of 237 all out against Pakistan at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium to ensure a 4-0 series whitewash.

England's reward is a degree of consolation for their Test hammering against Pakistan here, and a move above their opponents into fourth in the International Cricket Council rankings.

For Pietersen, there is satisfaction on a personal and collective level for a performance which saw England home with four balls and four wickets to spare.

England were, for once, minus Alastair Cook very early – and Pietersen responded with a world-class innings, for his second successive century at this venue with a nerveless display of skill against a spin-dominated attack.

From 68 for four in the 16th over, and for the remainder of England's run chase, his permanence was the only realistic chance of success.

Craig Kieswetter lent admirable support in a century stand for the fifth wicket – but for 49 overs, England would have been sunk without Pietersen.

Comparing his 153-ball contribution with all his other ODI innings, he said: 'I'm allowed to say it was probably the best one I've played.'

Pietersen's chief attributes were that, in stark contrast to his struggles in the Test series, he almost unerringly got bat and ball – and he always looked in control of a tough situation.

'I like to really calm things down and just watch the ball, and play it. I thought that the total they had, if I batted for 50 overs and took the game deep and batted with a bit of experience, we could come close.

'I just wanted to take the game deep, and I wanted to target bowlers as well. I think that was the key to the success.'

Unplayable: Pietersen hit 130 off 153 balls

Targeted as much as any, although he finished with three wickets, was off-spinner Saeed Ajmal – the scourge of Pietersen and others in those Test defeats.

Self-belief was perhaps Pietersen's biggest ally against four frontline spin bowlers.

'You need experience, lots of it, in order to keep the situation very simple – and back your ability. You need a lot of confidence in your ability.'

'When they picked the team and I saw they were going to bowl 40 overs of spin, I was like “oh no!”

'But the hard work I've been putting in with Mushy [spin coach Mushtaq Ahmed] has paid off.

'I'm not the finished article, by any stretch of the imagination. But wow, today I thoroughly enjoyed it.'

'Simon has a proven
track record of success in this division, chairman Dean Hoyle told the Huddersfield website.

'He knows League One inside-out
and he knows exactly what it takes to get teams promoted to the
Championship, having done so at both Blackpool and Leeds United.

'Throughout his managerial career he has operated with the pressure to
succeed and expectations that go along with that. We are delighted he
has taken up the challenge and we look forward to working with him.'

It marks a speedy return to management for Grayson following his sacking by Leeds at the start of February.

SIX NATIONS 2012: Leigh Halfpenny: Wales looking beyond England to Grand Slam

England just a stepping stone on path to Grand Slam glory for Wales, roars Halfpenny

Wales will not be satisfied simply by beating England in the RBS 6 Nations on Saturday – as only winning a Grand Slam will do, insists full-back Leigh Halfpenny.

Warren Gatland's World Cup semi-finalists travel to Twickenham to face the new-look England having won two games out of two in this year's competition so far against Ireland and Scotland.

England, under interim head coach Stuart Lancaster, are also unbeaten following their first two games, following tight wins in Edinburgh and Rome.

But Halfpenny is looking beyond England and insists he and his Welsh team-mates are focused on becoming the best side in the game.

After the clash at Twickenham, Wales host Italy on March 10, before welcoming France to the Millennium Stadium a week later in what could turn out to be a Grand Slam decider.

'At the end of the day we want to be
the best,' said Halfpenny. 'That means winning every single game and
achieving the Grand Slam. That is the objective in this tournament –
nothing less.

'We are preparing for this tournament
as we did the World Cup, which was another tournament we set out to
win. We want to be the best, and we set high goals to bring the best out
of us.

'We train as hard as possible, and nothing less than our best will do. Everyone is ambitious, from the coaches to the players.

'Winning trophies is our goal, and we believe we can achieve that.'

England hooker Lee Mears could be out of contention for this weekend's game against Wales after suffering a bicep injury.

The Bath forward has not been able to make either of Lancaster's opening two matchday squads in the competition so far, and may be absent against the unbeaten Welsh.

Harlequins' Chris Brooker has been called up as cover, Lancaster revealed this afternoon.

'Lee Mears has got a bit of a bicep hematoma, as they have described it, at the moment,' England's interim head coach said. 'He has gone for a scan today so we will wait and see what happens.

'He has two bicep injuries before so we want to be careful.

'He is still at Bath. We have brought Chris Brooker in from Quins. He arrived this morning and will stay with us until tomorrow afternoon.'

Gloucester winger Charlie Sharples, who is also yet to feature in the Six Nations, is another doubt for Saturday's game after suffering a dead leg in training.

'Charlie has picked up a dead leg so he won't be training. He has stayed with us. He will probably head home tonight. He won't be fit to train tomorrow, but I am sure he will be fine for Gloucester at the weekend,' Lancaster added.
