Samir Nasri and Carlos Tevez appeared to be in high spirits today as Manchester City prepared for their trip to Aston Villa on Monday.

Fresh from beating top-four rivals Chelsea at the Etihad last weekend, Nasri, Tevez and the rest of the City squad were put through their paces at City's training base in Carrington.

And Tevez, who doubled City's lead over Rafa Benitez's visitors after Yaya Toure's opener, took the time to give the cameras a thumbs-up while he rested between training sessions.

Nasri, who made a late cameo appearance in the win which tightened City's grip on second place, but struck a pose for the club photographer while reclining in the bootroom.

City manager Roberto Mancini criticised Nasri's work ethic last week, claiming that the France midfielder only offers him 50 per cent.

In an exclusive interview with the Guardian, Mancini said: 'I think Samir has fantastic qualities

'With his quality, he should always play well. Every game he could be the difference. A player of this quality could be one of the best players in Europe. But it's not happening.

'Sometimes a player thinks it's enough what they did the year before and doesn't understand that every day they should improve.'

He added: 'You win the title, then you think it's enough to play 50 per cent and you don't arrive the next year.'

'If you are a top player you know you can improve until the last day of your career but sometimes you get players who think it is not important to work and this is their worst mistake.

'Samir can do better than this year. He is a top player but he has not been playing at his level.'

Pablo Zabaleta and Joleon Lescott undertook some weight training in their bid to be fully prepared for City's visit to Villa Park next week.

Goalkeepers Joe Hart and Costel Pantilimon were also pictured putting in a shift. Hart, who made an outstanding save from a Frank Lampard penalty to keep the game at 0-0 last weekend, dived over hurdles to keep the ball out in this afternoon's session.

Mancini will be desperate for his side to take all three points, as league leaders and cross-city rivals United could be 15 points clear at the top come Monday, provided they beat Norwich at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

Caroline Wozniacki and Rory McIlroy take a trip around Sydney

Strewth! Wozzilroy frolic 300m above the streets of Sydney on vertigo-inducing Tower Skywalk

Wozniacki suffered with some knee niggles which led to her losing the No 1 ranking, and a loss to Pervak will not have been the way that she would have preferred to finish off the year.

But she seemed to be in good spirits as she joined McIlroy on the Sydney Tower Skywalk. The pair took a stroll around the top of the building, which is over 300m tall.

It must have been a nerve-wracking experience for the Dane, as she tweeted: 'Really proud of myself, on top of the world in Sydney with @McIlroyRory! #afraidofhights'

The pair also made stop at the world-famous Sydney Opera House during their city trip.

McIlroy recently revealed that he doesn’t know whether or not he will aim to play in the 2016 Olympics.

Golf has just been accepted back into the Olympic family, but the Northern Irishman is anticipating a backlash from whichever nation he chooses not to play for in Rio.

‘Play for one side or the other or not play at all because I may upset too many people,’ said McIlroy, in a BBC Northern Ireland documentary.

‘Those are the three options that I am considering very carefully.’

Wayne Rooney was in Switzerland today as the England and Manchester United striker helped train a group of Swiss youngsters.

Rooney imparted some tactical nous and drilled the teenagers at Swiss club Payerne. But the United hitman didn’t make the trip to the continent just for the fun of it.

The 27-year-old only received a two-match international ban from UEFA after being sent off during England’s final Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro in October 2011.

Rooney was initially banned for three
matches for viciously kicking out at Montenegro defender Miodrag
Dzudovic, which the disciplinary panel described as an assault,
but it was cut to two games after he and Fabio Capello attended an
appeal at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland before the Euros.

The third match of Rooney's ban was suspended for four years.

As a result, Rooney was able to make a
goalscoring return in the final group stage game of England's European
Championships campaign against Ukraine. He missed the matches against
France and Sweden.

One of the conditions of the relatively lenient sentence was that Rooney would take part in a community project supported by UEFA.

Rooney has been in sensational form in recent weeks. He was instrumental in Manchester United's derby win over champions City, as he scored twice at the Etihad before strike partner Robin van Persie delivered the killer blow at the death.

The partnership with Van Persie has developed into one of the most fearsome in the Premier League of late. Between them, the pair have scored a remarkable nine goals in the last four games.

World No 1 Rory McIlroy made early ground on leader Thomas Bjorn on the third day of the Barclays Singapore Open.

The Northern Irishman picked up two shots on the back nine to go to four under but that still left him five adrift of the Dane as play closed early for the day due to darkness.

It was again a mixed bag for McIlroy whose struggles of the first two days continued as he picked up four shots in all but also dropped two with a double-bogey six at the 444-yard sixth.

Having picked up a shot at the par three second he then eagled the 586-yard fourth before throwing away what he had gained two holes later.

A double-bogey six on the sixth was followed by a birdie on the seventh as McIlroy went out in 34 as he looked to improve on shooting 70 on each of the first two days.

'Two under through nine
was a pretty decent effort, but I probably need a few more birdies
tomorrow morning to get myself within a few shots of the lead going into
the fourth round,' he said.

Bjorn made a steady start by parring his first three holes to retain the lead on nine under, the Dane one shot ahead of England's Chris Wood who picked up one stroke with a birdie on the second.

South African George Coetzee was alone in third on seven under and Italian Francesco Molinari shared fourth a shot further back with Thailand's Chapchai Nirat.

Bjorn was in good spirits as he looked for his first win of the year.

'This course can very quickly bite you, especially if you don't drive the ball well,' he told the European Tour website after completing his second round.

'The numbers can run up on this golf course, so you've got to stay with what you're doing. I've enjoyed these two days, and it's nice to play some good stuff but there's still a long way to go in this golf tournament. I've got two good rounds in the bank but there's a way to go.'

Newcastle United Alan Pardew has paid tribute to the club’s travelling supporters who have returned from Belgium.

More than 5,000 fans made the trip to Bruges for their second Europa League group clash, even though only half had tickets for the 2-2 in the Jan Breydel Stadium.

The rest watched the games in bars and a big screen in the main city centre square.

Pardew said 'Our fans respected the people and city of Bruges and helped contribute to a great atmosphere in and around the city as well as inside the stadium and we thank them for that.

'The support our club receives day in, day out, wherever we play, is absolutely magnificent and gives the players a massive lift.

'That cannot be underestimated and without doubt they are a huge credit to the club and to the city of Newcastle.’

A club statement said the vast majority of supporters who travelled to Bruges were 'extremely well behaved, acting as excellent ambassadors for the club and contributing to a great day in Bruges before, during and after the game’.

Newcastle and Northumbria Police had tried to secure extra tickets for supporters but only received 2,300 from FC Bruges, who had given twice that number to Birmingham City last season.

A Newcastle spokesman conceded that supporters who weren't able to gain access to the stadium were 'understandably frustrated to see so many empty seats on the televised coverage, and yet remained in good spirits in the city centre.'

The statement added: 'It was disappointing that supporters who had a ticket for the game had to endure a longer than expected escorted walk to the stadium but despite that, their behaviour throughout was admirable.'

One Newcastle supporter was stabbed in an attack in Brussels and Belgian Police said just two fans were arrested for drunkenness.

Manchester City players in confident mood ahead of Real Madrid test

City players in high spirits as they prepare for one of the biggest games in the club's history against Real

UPDATED:

It is one of the biggest games in their history, but Manchester City's players betrayed no signs of nerves as they prepare to take on Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The squad were in an upbeat and confident mood as they were put through their paces at Real's Ciudad training complex on the morning of the game.

Mario Balotelli, Carlos Tevez, Sergio Aguero and company took part in some light ball control and passing drills on an astroturf pitch at the impressive 1.2m square metre facility.

And the players were all smiles as they signed autographs for local admirers and frolicked around with the ball.

City meet Real at the Bernabeu looking
to make the perfect start in a tough Group D which also contains Ajax
and Borussia Dortmund, the champions of Holland and Germany
respectively.

Manager Roberto Mancini is boosted by
the return of striker Sergio Aguero from injury as the Argentina
international returns to a city where he spent five years with Real's
rivals, Atletico.

And Spaniard David Silva further
lightened Mancini's mood by agreeing to a new five-year contract despite
speculation he may join the Spanish champions.

Silva is like to play off Aguero in a 4-3-2-1 system that won't be short on attacking potential.

But with Real likely to enjoy long
spells of possession and plenty of territory in City's half, much will
depend on the three-man shield in front of the defence – likely to be
Gareth Barry, Yaya Toure and Javi Garcia.

Despite facing the Group of Death, Mancini was brimming with optimism ahead of their second Champions League campaign.

Last night, he said: 'If you drive a
Ferrari you can win. We used to drive a Fiat or Cinquecento (at his
former club Inter Milan) and it is not so easy. But now we drive a
Ferrari.

'We have a good team and we play
together for a few years. I am sure we will win the trophy in the
future. I don't know when, but at some stage, the club will win.'

Last season's European campaign
brought disappointment as City were eliminated to the Europa League
after finishing third in a group also featuring Bayern Munich, Napoli
and Villarreal.

They were then knocked out of the Europa League by Sporting Lisbon at the Last 16 stage.

Despite that chastening experience,
Mancini said City had grown in confidence and promised to take the game
to Madrid, who have had a shaky start to the season amid speculation
over Cristiano Ronaldo's future.

He said: 'If you get a chance, you
have to score. A draw could be a good result, but our mentality is not
to defend, we don't have that mentality.

'If you want to do well, you have to attack very well and play football. That is what we will do.

'I think it was a good experience last
year – we did a good group but it was not enough. I think the group
will be stronger this year but it will be difficult for all the teams.

'I think it is important now that we
go to the second stage. After February anything can happen, but now it
is difficult to say what we can do.'

For the thousands of City fans in
Madrid, watching a City side crammed with world class talent capable of
winning the biggest club prize in Europe walk out in the Bernabeu will
represent a surreal moment.

On this week just 14 years ago, City
required an 86th minute winner from Shaun Goater to beat Macclesfield
Town in the third tier of English football, a result followed up with a dire
1-1 home draw against Chesterfield.

If there is ever a good time to play Real, then this is probably it. The La Liga champions have already lost twice this season in four games and trail Barcelona by eight points.

Manager Jose Mourinho was also criticised over the weekend for putting the boot into his players for not trying hard enough.

Mourinho is likely to start with former Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric and he came out fighting on Monday night.

He said: 'My conviction is tomorrow that we will have a proper team. I'm absolutely convinced of this.

'We will have a compact team full of solidarity where the team is the most important thing, where everyone wants to work for everyone else's sake, a team where everyone wants to play at 100 per cent, regarding personal and professional principles.

'I think we will be at the top of our game. We may be missing calmness and self-confidence, perhaps missing these. And it is not easy to play against a team like Manchester City.

'Yes, we come from a poor match, where people know it was a terrible game. But I believe the team believes and has the ambition and the professionalism, I think they will be a the top of their game. Perhaps I'm wrong but this is my feeling.'

Gareth Bale has not thought of leaving Tottenham

Leaving Tottenham this summer didn't even cross my mind, insists Bale

Gareth Bale insists the thought of leaving Tottenham never crossed his mind this summer.

Barcelona scouted Bale last season and he has also been heavily linked to a number of Europe's top clubs, like Real Madrid.

Many had predicted that the 23-year-old would follow Luka Modric and Harry Redknapp out of White Hart Lane this summer, but the Welshman committed himself to Tottenham by signing a new four-year contract in June.

When asked if he considered leaving the north London club after the end of last season, the winger said: 'No. I've always been focused on my game, playing football, and I'm enjoying myself here at the moment so there's no reason to go anywhere.

'I'm enjoying my football, we've got a great squad now and hopefully next season we can get Champions League football, where we should be.'

Bale was in an optimistic mood on Sunday as he reflected on Tottenham's 3-1 over Reading – their first under new manager Andre Villas-Boas.

Two weeks ago the team were booed off after putting in a drab performance in their 1-1 draw against Norwich but Bale thinks good times lie ahead for Spurs under Villas-Boas.

Bale believes last week's move to Tottenham's new state of the art training complex has instilled a new-found sense of belief within the squad that can help the team go on the type of run which pushed them towards the top of the table in the first half of last season.

High spirits: Bale says that the Spurs squad are optimistic about their chances this season

'We didn't have a great start last year and we were in a similar position this year,' Bale said.

'We went on a run last season and there's no reason why we can't do it this year.

'It feels like a new club at the moment with the new training ground. It has excited everybody, and has brought everybody up again.'

The poor start the London club endured under Villas-Boas had led some to question chairman Daniel Levy's decision to bring the Portuguese in to replace Harry Redknapp, who was sacked despite finishing fourth, fifth and fourth in his three full seasons at the club.

Villas-Boas' failure to hang on to Luka Modric, and the sale of fans' favourite Rafael van der Vaart, raised a few eyebrows, but the 21million double capture of Mousa Dembele and Clint Dempsey from Fulham looks an inspired bit of business.

Bale, now in his sixth season at White Hart Lane, feels the club are stronger now than they were at the end of last season, and brushed off reports Villas-Boas was under pressure after the poor start to his reign.

'I haven't heard anything about (Villas-Boas') future,' Bale said. 'He's here to build a team and it's a new way of playing for us, compared to last season.

'It does take time. Everybody should understand that. There has been an improvement in every game and you saw that at Reading.

'Everybody just has to be patient. Things will come and it'll start to click like it did yesterday and, hopefully, we can push on from there.

'Everyone feels fresh again and we've got the new signings now, which is great.

'We've got a stronger squad now than we did at the start of the season. Our plan is to win every game and we'll be trying to do that.'

Villas-Boas deployed Dembele in Modric's former position for his first start on Sunday and the Belgian impressed with his passing and movement.

Bale thinks the 25-year-old, who came off the bench and scored against Norwich, is more than capable of filling the Croat's shoes.

'Mousa's come in and he's been absolutely fantastic,' Bale said. He scored on his debut, played unbelievable against Reading and he's been a great addition to the squad.

'Obviously it's not nice to see your big players go but I'm sure he can fill his (Modric's) boots and more.'

But speaking out as he has done but dampen spirits at Arsenal, who have enjoyed a steady start to a season through which they were once again expected to struggle.

On the departures, Sagna said: 'When your two best players go, you ask yourself questions. Fans come up to me in street, and I understand the frustration. Like them I don't understand everything.

'Everyone knew Robin was leaving. But Alex He's 24 and with three years left on his contract. I still don't understand it. He's a huge loss.'

Dimitar Berbatov "Fulham"s biggest ever signing"

Biggest ever! Jol pays tribute to Berbatov as Fulham boss pulls off major coup

Fantasy football 2012

Fulham manager Martin Jol has hailed Dimitar Berbatov as the biggest signing in the club’s history.

Berbatov snubbed offers from Juventus and Fiorentina to join his former Tottenham boss in a 5million deal and lifted spirits at the club after the 15m sale of Mousa Dembele to Tottenham.

The Bulgarian has not played for
Manchester United this season and has not started a game since February
but he could be involved at West Ham on Saturday.

Jol said: ‘With good players you have to pay good money but we have made steps over the last couple of years.

‘There were a lot of clubs interested in Dimitar. We were able and capable of getting him and I’m not lying, he’s here.

‘I tried to do something months ago
and it didn’t come off and I came back. For him it was the right moment
to make a decision and he made that decision for us.

‘I’m very, very happy and I think our
fans will be very happy and proud because it’s probably the biggest
signing in the history of Fulham.’

Jol was Tottenham manager when
Berbatov arrived at White Hart Lane for 11m from Bayer Leverkusen in
2006 but had been sacked by the time the striker was sold to
Manchester United for 30m two years later.

‘In my final period at Spurs, I said,
“He will go over my dead body”,’ recalled Jol. ‘We had a good
relationship and he knows that he will enjoy his football here.
Hopefully, he can score his goals and we have other good players around
him.’

Berbatov’s decision to sign for
Fulham did not go down well with Fiorentina or Juventus, who both
believed they had struck agreements with the striker.

Juventus director general Beppe
Marotta said: ‘Berbatov certainly did not make a good impression on
anyone and it was an unprofessional way to behave, so we agree with
Fiorentina that it’s best he didn’t come here.’

Fulham are also keen to sign Sunderland’s 27-year-old midfielder Kieran Richardson.
