Martin Castrogiovanni is linked with a move to French side Toulon

Cash-go-giovanni: Toulon must stump up if they want Martin

UPDATED:

22:01 GMT, 28 December 2012

French big-spenders Toulon must stump up a transfer fee if Leicester to part with Italian tight-head Martin Castrogiovanni.

Speculation in France has pointed to Castrogiovanni joining the likes of Jonny Wilkinson next season, but the Argentinian-born forward has a year still to run on a three-year deal at Leicester.

The 31-year-old is on the bench Saturday in Leicester’s Aviva Premiership match at home to Gloucester having returned from a trip back to Argentina for family reasons before Christmas.

But Leicester’s director of rugby Richard Cockerill said the player had not asked for a move though he was aware of the interest from a French club who also said to be chasing Bath scrum-half Michael Claassens.

Cockerill added: ‘He’s under contract for another season.

'We have accepted transfer fee for our players in the past but at this time the player hasn’t come and seen me and said he wants to leave and we have had no official approach from Toulon.

‘So at this point Castro is our player and is here for another season. If Toulon have enough money to buy him out of his contract with us that might be an option, but at this point he is our player and we are more than happy to have him.’

Castrogiovanni has made himself a popular member of the Leicester squad since he joined in 2006 and has always given full credit to the club for helping him become one of the most powerful props in the world.

Leicester might be interested in off-loading him in an effort to keep within the Premiership salary cap budget of 4.5 million a season.

When Castrogiovanni signed his latest deal two years ago, it was reported he was on a deal of well over 200,000 per season.

Since then, however, Leicester have developed Dan Cole into a tight-head of international repute and have high hopes that Fraser Balmain, a recruit from Newcastle, will also become another top-class prop.

Cockerill has admitted that he faces a fight to keep all his top players, including England lock Geoff Parling who has yet to agree a new deal.

Gloucester, who are losing Scotland lock Jim Hamilton to France, are reported to be heading the queue.

Parling starts today against Gloucester having had to do substitute duty in last week’s win over London Irish. But there is no place yet in the Leicester squad for Tom Croft, the England flanker, who is poised to make his comeback from a serious neck injury sustained last April.

Cockerill said: ‘When you have been out for that amount of time you have to be careful coming back into big fixtures. Tom will have to wait another week or so maybe which won't hurt him.’

Danny Cipriani dropped from Sale Sharks squad

Cipriani the flop can't even make the bench for Sale as Mitchell shakes things up

Axed: Cipriani's form is woeful

Axed: Cipriani's form is woeful

Danny Cipriani’s turbulent career took another severe hit on Friday when he was left out of Sale’s crucial Aviva Premiership trip to old club Wasps on Sunday.

The 25-year-old is the biggest casualty of a new regime imposed by the uncompromising John Mitchell, the former All Blacks coach, to try to lift the relegation-threatened club.

Cipriani joined Sale last summer and had hopes of an England recall, but has lost his place to Nick Macleod, who is seen as more reliable and sturdy in tight contests.

His demise has prompted talk of Sale trying to move him on, despite having signed a three-year deal.

Mitchell has decided Cipriani’s form is so poor that he cannot even gain a place on the bench. He prefers South African journeyman Corne Uys as back-up to Macleod. Cipriani’s undoing seems to be his oft-criticised tackling, which was exposed in the 62-0 trouncing by Toulon, the French big spenders, last Sunday in the Heineken Cup.

Mitchell, who joined last month as a consultant, made spiky comments after the game, questioning one or two of his new players’ attitudes.

‘Some of the characters have been revealed,’ he said of a squad who were expected to challenge for honours.

Now, after a disastrous first four months, Sale, six points adrift, must win their next two games against moderate Wasps on Sunday, and at home to Worcester next Friday to give themselves hope in 2013.

Sale watchers believe that Mitchell has decided Cipriani has been given every opportunity to prove his worth by starting 11 games, while injury-hit Macleod has begun only six.

Feb 2011: Accused of taking a bottle of vodka from behind a bar. Docked match fee by Rebels and dropped for three games.

Aug 2012: Returns to Sale.

A hint of Mitchell’s thinking came 10
days ago before Sale played their home European pool game against
Toulon. Mitchell initially picked Rob Miller at fly-half only for
Cipriani, who had been ill, to be called up in a reshuffle the day
before.

Cipriani looked to have made a decent impression, and he appeared
optimistic after the narrow 17-6 defeat and talked about thriving in
Mitchell’s ‘new beginning’.

But that was before the trip to Toulon where Sale subsided after
half-time to concede nine tries in all. ‘I certainly know a lot more
about some individuals after that performance,’ added Mitchell.

Cipriani seems to have taken his omission from a return to his old club
philosophically, judging by tweets to his 270,000 followers.

He wrote on Thursday: ‘If you got to over think, is it right If the
issue has to be forced, is it right If it falls on deaf ears, what do
you do #life.’

For Sale, the Cipriani issue is a sideshow to a terrible season that started with a 43-6 hammering at Exeter.

After they lost at home to promoted London Welsh three games later,
forwards coach Steve Scott was dismissed. Bryan Redpath, the new
director of rugby, was about to be demoted in a shake-up carried out by
chief executive Steve Diamond.

Diamond talked about bringing in a ‘yard dog’ to give Sale more bite and
recruited Mitchell, who was a player-coach at the club 14 years ago, to
help a new management team.

But the link-up might come to an end in February if Mitchell, who has
ties in South Africa, takes up television work for the Super 15 season.

Sale have had a round of cost-cutting while back-room officials were
embroiled in a row on Friday with supporters who complained they had
been abused by a staff member on Facebook for moaning too much. ‘Utter
shambles,’ retorted a fan.

Wayne Rooney transfer target for Anzhi Makhachkala

Anzhi want Rooney! Megabucks Russians line up sensational swoop for United star

|

UPDATED:

08:04 GMT, 26 October 2012

Wayne Rooney is a target for mega-rich Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala, team director and Brazilian legend Roberto Carlos has revealed.

The Dagestan club are bankrolled by billionaire Russian oligarch Suleyman Kerimov and Carlos had a warning for Manchester United fans hoping to see Rooney stay at Old Trafford, saying: 'If the owner of Anzhi has a wish to buy somebody, he will go and do it.'

Anzhi have already tempted several big name players to make the unfashionable move to the north Caucasus with huge wages. Samuel Eto'o earns a whopping 250,000-a-week at Anzhi and any offer to Rooney would be equally eyewatering.

Nice work (if you can get it…)

Anzhi's big earners and their weekly wages:

Samuel Eto'o – 250,000
Christopher Samba – 100,000
Yury Zhirkov – 80,000
Lassana Diarra – 55,000
Guus Hiddink (manager) – 160,000
Roberto Carlos (team director) – 65,000

Carlos said: 'He’s one of the best players in the world and any team would be happy to have him in their squad. He’s still a very young player.

'Of course I could not say when, and if, it will happen. It’s not only Anzhi who can want to buy him.

'There are plenty of teams in Italy and Spain, all over the world, who are eager to have a player like Rooney.

'If the owner of Anzhi has a wish to
buy somebody, he will go and do it. But we are trying to change the
image of the club. It’s not just about money.

'Of course we are going to buy good
players but not only international players. We want to sign good Russian
players that are not that expensive.'

Rooney, 27, is loved at Old Trafford and remains a key part of Sir Alex Ferguson's plans despite being dropped to the bench earlier this season.

But the England striker flirted with leaving United for rivals Manchester City two years ago, claiming the Red Devils did not match his ambition. Anzhi certainly do not lack in that department, having built themselves up to be a Russian superpower from meagre beginnings.

Anzhi manager Guus Hiddink, however, played down the prospect of Rooney moving to Russia following his side's limp Europa League defeat at Anfield on Thursday night.

He said: ‘It is nice to sometimes talk out of the blue without any reality.’

For all the hype that has surrounded Anzhi and their huge spending power, they were very disappointing in the 1-0 loss at Liverpool, with Brad Jones not troubled once in Liverpool’s goal.

Anzhi’s first shot did not arrive until stoppage time and even then Fedor Smolov’s effort was well wide, spelling out the need for a creative force such as Rooney.

There is little question, however, that Anzhi will soon become a force in Europe, given the astronomical wages they can pay.

Nani uncertain over Manchester United future amid Juventus interest

Only God knows what the future holds for Nani, according to the Portuguese winger amid increasing uncertainty over his future at Old Trafford.

Talks over a new contract continue to stall and the 25-year-old has started just five of Manchester United's 12 games so far this season.

Sir Alex Ferguson named Nani as a substitute during Tuesday's 3-2 Champions League win over Braga and he was also on the bench for last weekend's Barclays Premier League victory over Stoke.

Russian big-spenders Zenit St Petersburg failed in a Deadline Day attempt to buy him earlier this summer, citing his 'unreal' wage demands for the breakdown in the deal.

Italian champions Juventus are keeping tabs on his ongoing contract saga and are believed to ready to pounce for his services in January at a cut-price 12million fee.

And Nani, who arrived at United for 14m from Sporting Lisbon six years ago, admits he does not not know what the future holds for him.

'Only God knows what awaits me,' he told The Sun.

'I am in perfect condition — I am physically good and feeling confident.

Arsene Wenger continued his crusade against football's big spenders as he prepared for Sunday's clash at Manchester City.

curb the spending of clubs like City and Paris St Germain and help his
team end their seven-year trophy drought.

'In the end, football suffers,' said Wenger. 'Look what happened in the transfer market this summer. PSG are ambitious, they have resources, and there you go. We always say the same thing. Europe, it's like the Titanic. But we carry on as if nothing matters. More than ever, we need to manage our clubs in a controlled way because otherwise everyone suffers.'

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson urged UEFA to deny Europe's massive spenders a place in the Champions League, adding: 'The qualification requirements for the Champions League are not a victory or second place in the league: you can't enter without an invitation.

'But when someone [PSG] pays 36million for a boy of 19 [Brazilian Lucas Moura] you have to say football has become crazy.'

Manchester United have tried to silence Nani as his contract dispute with the club continues to rumble on.

His 'unreal' wage demands wrecked any chance of the United winger moving to big-spenders Zenit St Petersburg this summer.

And the Portugal international has become increasingly disillusioned with life at United after failing to agree a new contract and finding himself outside Sir Alex Ferguson's preferred line-up.

Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young are ahead of Nani in the pecking order on the wings, while the arrivals of Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa this summer have further shunted Nani away from the action.

Nani believes he has been mistreated by United over his contract situation and the club have been angered by claims that Nani intends to run down his contract and leave for free when it expires – according to reports in The Mirror.

Nani was dropped following United's defeat at Everton in their opening match of the Barclays Premier League season and has not yet forced his way back in.

The former Sporting Lisbon ace came off the bench to replace Kagawa with 29 minutes remaining in the 3-2 win at Southampton in his only other appearance for United this season.

Arsene Wenger: Arsenal will soon win the title again

Wenger: New rules will make it much fairer in Premier League

22:00 GMT, 1 September 2012

Arsene Wenger is convinced Arsenal are
about to have the last laugh over the Premier League big-spenders –
and will soon win the title again.

The manager is optimistic because he
believes that the tough economic climate and UEFA's Financial Fair Play
rules, which require clubs to only spend what they earn and break even
by the 2014-15 season, will now work in his club's favour.

Keep the faith: Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger

Keep the faith: Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger

'Financial Fair Play will come through because big clubs who have been spending a lot are worrying now,' said Wenger. 'They ignored it until now, but finally we see that they are getting concerned.

'We are run in a very responsible way. We make a profit every year and I think that's where nearly everybody is struggling in Europe. We find ourselves in the situation of Germany in Europe.

'I'm convinced that society will force football to become more reasonable. The standard of living is dropping, and you cannot imagine that will happen in society while football continues to push up with inflation. That can't work together.'

That is why Wenger predicts that Arsenal will soon be back in a fair fight for trophies – and will also be able to keep their star players.

He explained how much it hurt to see Robin van Persie score against Fulham and then celebrate in a Manchester United shirt last week.

Wenger said 'It felt a bit strange. I was thinking, “He has the wrong shirt on. Why does he jump around like that in that shirt” Deep down I knew but I didn't like it too much”.'

Yet Van Persie has left a void at Arsenal, and Wenger said: 'If you lose a player who scores 30 League goals … there aren't 100 players in the world who could do that in England. So you need a solution.

'We are not completely at our best going forward, but it will happen quickly because we play as a team and fight together. This is a massive month and it will be a measure of how our season is likely to go.'

But even if Arsenal come off second best at Liverpool, or against Manchester City and Chelsea later in the month, Wenger will not quit. He has a young squad who will be in their prime when the Fair Play rules kick in.

'It never crosses my mind,' he said. 'I go into a game looking to win. And the aim is to win the title. I'm the first to be disappointed if it doesn't happen. But we have a fantastic squad with fantastic quality and I think it'll work out.'

West Ham top agents fees table

Fantasy football 2012

West Ham spent a record 4.31million in agents’ fees to get promoted from the Championship straight back to the Barclays Premier League last season.

The club, who were relegated from the top flight last summer, smashed the previous record held by Leeds, who spent 1.9m in 2004-05.

Previous big spenders include QPR (1.77m in 2010-11), Middlesbrough (1.46m in 2009-10), Derby (1.042m in 2008-09) and Leicester (519,000) in 2007-08.

Who spent what

West Ham, who reduced overall debt to creditors from 112m to 91m in their last recorded accounts, spent big on agents’ fees to bring in big-name players. In fact, they spent only 200,000 more on transfer fees over the same period.

Although the Football League do not publish individual fees for players, it is understood the biggest commission was paid to Kevin Nolan’s agent.

The West Ham skipper arrived from Newcastle on a free transfer last summer and is expected to be one of the club’s most influential players this season.

League one and two

In total, Championship clubs spent 18,704,976 in agents’ fees last season.

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish said: ‘The figures don’t surprise me, it’s the owners who blow their brains out paying the agents — no-one makes them do it. The way to regulate the industry is to go even further and publish a complete breakdown of transfer fees, agents’ fees for individual players and their salaries. We are quoted prices for players all the time and there is no accurate way to corroborate the agent’s claims.’

Don Rowing, managing director at frugal Barnsley, said: ‘For clubs in the Championship to spend 18m is an extraordinary figure and it’s all going out of football.’

Five clubs spent no money on agents’ fees — Hartlepool in League One and Accrington Stanley, AFC Wimbledon, Barnet and Crewe in League Two.

West Ham spent the most money on agents fees in the Football League last season, with more than 21 million in total shelled out.

The Hammers, who were promoted to the Premier League via the play-offs, paid out more than 4m.

The Football League has revealed in its annual report that 21.7m was spent, up on the previous season (16,658,976), although clubs engaged in more player transactions between the period July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012 were down – 3,144 compared to 2,910 the year before.

Championship clubs accounted for 18.7million of this total, with League One and League Two clubs spending 1.8million and 0.9million respectively.

Clubs committed to pay agents in 702 (22 per cent) of the 3,144 player transactions that took place. In the previous year it was 570 (20 per cent) of 2,910 transactions.

Five clubs (Hartlepool, Accrington, AFC Wimbledon, Barnet and Crewe) did not spend any money on agents' fees during 2011/12 while a further 22 clubs spent less than 25,000.

In announcing the figures Football League chairman Greg Clarke said: 'While 21m is a lot of money leaving the game, it should also be noted that a considerable amount of this total has been spent by a small number of clubs.

'In fact, almost a fifth of the overall figure was spent by one club alone.

'Where such spending forms part of a sustainable business plan it shouldn't be of great concern and supporters should be encouraged to see our clubs committing themselves to the new Financial Fair Play regulations that will take effect across all three divisions in the new season.

'In time, these rules will require clubs
to be more circumspect with regard to their spending and may help
reduce the costs incurred in this area.'

Of the 18,704,976 spent on agents'
fees by Championship clubs, West Ham (4,314,270) accounted for more
than a quarter of the spending as they made a successful return to the
Premier League at the first attempt.
Championship
title winners Reading (1,662,163), Leicester (1,812,371) and Crystal
Palace (1,170,950) were the only other clubs to spend seven-figure sums
on fees. Those four clubs accounted for almost half (8,959,754) of the
total spend in the division.

Champions Charlton (265,170) and runners-up Sheffield Wednesday (332,620) were the biggest spenders on agents' fees in League One.
Huddersfield (213,343), who were also promoted via the play-offs, had the fourth highest total in the division.

Hartlepool did not commit any money in agents' fees and for the second year running were the only club in League One to do so.

League Two champions Swindon spent 448,506, accounting for 43 per cent of the 1,036,198 spent on agents' fees for that division.

The only other club in League Two to break into six-figures for fees was Crawley (136,800), who were promoted along with the Robins.

Crewe managed to go up via the play-offs without committing any money in agents' fees, while Accrington, AFC Wimbledon and Barnet joined the Alex in not spending a penny on fees.
