Sunderland are confident of seeing off a late challenge from QPR for Danny Graham and believe they would have signed him by now but for a snag over Kenwyne Jones’ proposed move to Swansea.

Sportsmail exclusively revealed last Friday that Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill had launched a bid to take the 27-year-old Swansea striker back to his native North East.

QPR have now joined Norwich, Reading and Aston Villa as the other challengers for his signature, but Sunderland still firmly believe they will win the race.

O’Neill is convinced Graham would have been preparing for his debut by now but for Swansea and Stoke failing to reach an agreement over Jones.

Stoke rejected a Swansea request to take Jones on loan with a view to a permanent deal. They are now waiting for Liberty Stadium bosses to come back with an offer that meets their valuation.

Once Swansea have secured a replacement for Graham – and they remain hopeful it will be Jones – the former Watford star will be allowed to leave for around 4million, with the Stadium of Light his likely destination.

Chelsea are putting together a 1.5million golden goodbye for Daniel Sturridge to make sure that he joins Liverpool.

The clubs have agreed a 12million
fee for the striker, who underwent a medical on Sunday and who is
expected to sign a three-and-a-half year deal in the next 24 hours.

However, it needed the addition of a
cash sweetener to facilitate the move after Sturridge indicated that he
would be happy to stay at Stamford bridge and fight for his place until
his contract expires in 18 months.

The on-off transfer hit a snag last
week over the payment of agent fees and Chelsea were keen to avoid any
more hitches as they seek to off-load Sturridge and his 60,000-a-week
wages.

They also do not want to risk losing the player for nothing in the summer of 2014.

Sturridge came close to joining
Liverpool on August 31 but the switch collapsed when he refused to sign
on loan, insisting he only wanted to move on a permanent deal.

And barring an unexpected U-turn, Sturridge will become a Liverpool player this week.

However in a statement on their website
on Thursday evening, Lyon said no deal had been struck after Tottenham
failed to make a suitable offer in line with their original approach.

The statement said: 'Olympique Lyonnais have not reached an agreement with Tottenham for the transfer of Hugo Lloris.

'Proposals submitted by Tottenham
tonight [Thursday] are significantly distant from the one which was
officially offered on August 26 and had opened up discussions between
the player and the London club.'

The Gunners were so confident of securing Sahin’s services that they planned a photo shoot on Monday ahead of his official unveiling. The club called a halt to the shoot after the last minute problem.

The Gunners are also expecting to offload Andrey Arshavin before the close of the transfer window after Zenit St Petersburg revived their interest in the Russia forward. Arsenal are desperate to shift Arshavin’s 70,000 a week off the wage bill.

Arsene Wenger's seven-year transfer pursuit of Nuri Sahin was halted as talks to bring the Real Madrid midfielder to Arsenal on loan hit a sticking point.

Wenger wants to replace Alex Song by signing Sahin, 23, on a one-year loan but negotiations have become locked on the terms of an option to buy him permanently next year.

Liverpool are also interested but the lure of Champions League football was still expected to tip the balance in Arsenal’s favour.

Sahin, monitored by Wenger since starring in the Turkey team who won the European Under 17 title in 2005, is paid the equivalent of 120,000 a week in Spain, which would make him the highest paid player at the Emirates.

Song, the man he is intended to replace, was paid 55,000 a week and moved to Barcelona because the club refused to renegotiate his terms.

There is better news for Wenger over the fitness of gifted England midfielder Jack Wilshere. Out for more than a year, his rehabilitation is ahead of schedule and club medics feel he could be back in late October.
