Goals from Emmanuel Ledesma, Merouane Zemmama and Richard Smallwood put Middlesbrough through to the fourth round of the Capital One Cup as they made easy work of Preston at Deepdale.

North End took Championship scalps from Huddersfield and Crystal Palace to reach this stage of the competition, but the challenge of an impressive Middlesbrough proved too much as a trio of defensive errors put them out at the third round for the fourth year running.

Both Ledesma and Andrew Halliday claimed to have scored Boro's 13th-minute opener, with the Argentinian's inswinging corner striking the far post and rolling over the line with Halliday making sure by bundling in.

Five minutes later, Preston allowed Zemmama far too much time to shoot into the bottom corner from 25 yards five minutes later, but the hosts pulled one back through Jack King's smart finish on 40 minutes.

Smallwood capped a comfortable win for Boro on 61 minutes, pouncing on the loose ball after Preston defender Paul Huntington headed Zemmama's cross back to Steve Simonsen, too powerfully for the keeper to hold, as the visitors eased to victory.

Boro continued their fine form after last week's win over Blackburn Rovers in the Championship.

Jailed: Wales striker Ched Evans was jailed for five years

Shamed Ched Evans has been shown the door by Sheffield United just a month after he was found guilty of rape.

The 23-year-old striker, who scored 35 goals last season and was named in the League One Team of the Year, was among 11 players released by the Blades.

Evans missed the last three games of the regular season after being jailed for five years for raping the then 19-year-old who was 'too drunk to consent' following a night out in Rhyl, north Wales, last May. He has indicated he will appeal.

The Blades paid 3million to Manchester City for Evans in the summer of 2009 and the 23-year-old, who signed a three-year contract, made 113 appearances, scoring a total of 48 goals.

Penalty heartache goalkeeper Steve Simonsen, 33, has also been released from their defeat in the League One play-off final.

Simonsen made a series of oustanding
saves in Saturday's penalty shoot-out defeat to Huddersfield before
missing the decisive spot-kick in their agonising 8-7 defeat.

The former Everton and Stoke goalkeeper, a free signing after an initial
loan spell in July 2010, made 103 starts for the Blades and two
substitute appearances.

Fellow first-team players James Beattie, Johnny Ertl and Andy Taylor,
who hit a post in the shoot-out, have also been released along with
reserve-team players Jack Adams, Connor Brown, Seamus Conneely, Corey
Gregory, Shane Murray and Marc Warren.

New deals have been offered to midfield pair Kevin McDonald and Lee Williamson plus striker Chris Porter.

Heartbroken keeper Steve Simonsen has suffered another body blow after being axed by Sheffield United.

Simonsen missed the crucial shoot-out spot-kick in the Blades' dramatic Wembley play-off final defeat by Huddersfield.

Failure to win promotion has forced United to slash their budgets and Simonsen is a victim of the cuts.

He is out of contract in the summer and is not being offered a new deal.

Chairman Kevin McCabe said: 'With the new financial fair play rules, we are going to have to work with a lower budget next season.

'Unless we get the wage bill down, we'll face financial penalties.'

Jordan Rhodes is unsure whether he will stay at League One play-off winners Huddersfield, but manager Simon Grayson will let him go if the price is right.

The 8million-rated striker, who plied his trade in the third tier of English football this season, has attracted Premier League interest, with Fulham, Everton and Aston Villa interested in the Scot.

Celtic and Wolves have also been linked with Rhodes.

Rhodes stepped up in the agonising penalty shoot-out to take the first sudden-death penalty against Sheffield United, and sent the keeper the wrong way.

Huddersfield went on to win the shoot-out after Steve Simonsen blazed his penalty over the bar, handing Simon Grayson's side promotion to the Championship.

Despite the interest, Rhodes may stay at Huddesfield.

He said: 'I’ve no idea if I am staying.

'That’s for the people who run the club and, until told otherwise, I’m a Huddersfield Town player and will continue to give 100 per cent for the club.'

Grayson believes that if the right offer comes in for the Scotland Under 21 international, he will have no choice but to let him go.

'I saw 8 million quoted. Well, if we got 8 million, that’s a lot of money.

'Every player has his price and we’d be foolish to not think that we might lose him.'

The former Leeds manager warned that if Rhodes were to leave the club, it should be sooner rather than later.

'We don’t need to be going into deadline day and losing players because we won’t be able to replace them.'

Huddersfield Town reached the npower Championship after winning a dramatic sudden-death penalty shoot-out against Sheffield United.

After a goalless 90 minutes and half an hour's extra time proved fruitless, it seemed that the penalty shoot-out would go the same way as the first three penalties were missed.

But after the allotted five penalties the score was 2-2. Then the scoring really started.

Huddersfield netted their next penalties in sudden death but after United responded with five of their own, it was left to keeper Simonsen, who had played superby, to level things up.

However, he blazed his kick over the bar to leave Simon Grayson's side in the Championship, while the Blades face the likes of Crawley Town in League One.

Sheffield United 1 Stevenage 0 (agg 1-0): Porter strikes late to secure Blades' Wembley spot

|

UPDATED:

21:26 GMT, 14 May 2012

Chris Porter's late header sent Sheffield United into the npower League One play-off final after a tense semi-final victory over Stevenage.

After a goalless first leg and a similarly even first 85 minutes here, extra-time looked on the cards until Porter popped up at the back post to nod Matt Lowton's pinpoint cross past Chris Day.

It sent Bramall Lane wild and was a moment of personal glory for Porter, who had struggled in a lone role up front.

The win was nothing less than United deserved, though, as they were the dominant force throughout and it should have been a more resounding victory, but Ryan Flynn, Lee Williamson and Stephen Quinn were all denied.

As it was, Porter's goal was enough to secure passage to Wembley where Danny Wilson's side will meet either Huddersfield or MK Dons, who play the second leg of their semi-final tomorrow night.

MATCH FACTS

SHEFFIELD UNITED: Simonsen, Lowton, Maguire, Collins, Hill, Williamson, McDonald (Montgomery 46), Doyle, Flynn, Quinn, Porter. Subs Not Used: Howard, Taylor, McAllister, O'Halloran.

Goals: Porter 85.

Booked: Lowton.

Wilson's half-time team-talk will still have been ringing in United's ears by the time they created their first meaningful effort of the second period, but Flynn could not get enough purchase on his shot from 16 yards out following a poor clearance and it was blocked.

It was much more vibrant from the Blades after the restart, though, and Williamson went close when he turned Porter's cross just wide as they stepped it up, with Flynn missing by inches with a 20-yard drive moments later.

The game began to open up and Blades goalkeeper Steve Simonsen, who had been a virtual spectator throughout, was tested for the first time when he got down to save Luke Freeman's low shot.

Justice almost served: United missed out on automatic promotion on the final day

Quinn and Williamson both fired over from distance as United's surge began to run out of steam.

Stevenage had hardly presented an attacking threat, but they could have taken an undeserved lead had it not been a fine finger-tip save from Simonsen, who superbly turned Scott Laird's 20-yard shot over.

As the game entered its final 10 minutes it became frantic as the hosts renewed their searched for a winner and Matt Hill rifled a 30-yard piledriver just wide and Quinn forced Day into a save with a right-footed effort soon after.

And with extra-time looming, Porter rose highest to nod home from close range and send United to Wembley as they saw out a nerve-wracking final few minutes.

Sheffield United 0 Birmingham 4: Rooney double crushes Blades' Cup dream

Adam Rooney's double
helped Birmingham cruise through to the fifth round of the FA Cup as
Sheffield United's eight-match winning run at Bramall Lane came to a
shuddering halt.

The
23-year-old Irishman struck seven minutes before half-time, after
Birmingham teenager Nathan Redmond had scored against the run of play in
the 18th minute.

Ref: Lee Mason (Lancashire).

Birmingham never looked back after
Rooney had added that second goal, and although the Blades struck the
woodwork twice in a matter of seconds shortly after the restart, Wade
Elliott added a third for the Championship side and Rooney wrapped up
the contest in the 78th minute.

Danny Wilson's Blades are flying high in npower League One as they bid to bounce straight back to the second tier.

But they were no match for Chris Hughton's in-form side, who have now
won their last five matches and are unbeaten in their last nine.

The home side were unchanged for the fourth game running, while Hughton
recalled goalkeeper Colin Doyle, midfielders Morgaro Gomis, Redmond and
Elliott, plus striker Rooney.

The tie's opening chance fell to the
Blades in the fourth minute. Full-back Matt Lowton crossed from the
right and midfielder Kevin McDonald's well-struck shot from the edge of
the penalty area was blocked by defender Curtis Davies.

Ched Evans was next to threaten as United made all the early running, but Birmingham shocked them by taking the lead.

Midfielder Jordon Mutch swung over a corner from the right and when the
ball broke to Redmond on the edge of the penalty area, the 17-year-old
rifled home a low shot into the centre of goal.

Redmond fired another effort just wide when cutting in from his wing
five minutes later as the visitors seized the initiative, but Blades
striker Evans forced Doyle into a smart save with a 20-yard free-kick in
the 27th minute.

Full of
confidence, Redmond tried his luck from further out, but his 30-yard
rocket was just off target, while Evans lashed a volley wide from a
similar distance.

But,
buoyed by their initial breakthrough, Birmingham carried all the
momentum and when they doubled their lead through Rooney it was no more
than they deserved. Winger Chris Burke waltzed into the penalty area and
played the ball square for Rooney to lash home his fifth goal of the
season, high into the net from six yards.

The Blades had chances to get back into the game seven minutes after the restart but luck was not on their side.

Lee Williamson's crisp shot from inside the area hit the crossbar and
Lowton's follow-up effort also came back off the woodwork with
Birmingham goalkeeper Doyle well beaten.

But it was not to be United's day and Elliott rubbed salt into their
wounds when thundering home the visitors' third goal from 20 yards five
minutes later.

Rooney sidefooted home the fourth goal following David Murphy's cross.

Sheffield United 3 Salisbury 1: Easy for the Blades

Sheffield United 3 Salisbury 1: No drama for the Blades as non-league side bow out

Sheffield United cut through non-League Salisbury with consummate ease as they secured a place in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

It took just 18 minutes for Chris Porter to break the deadlock before Ched Evans put daylight between the League One side at their lowly opponents.

And things got worse for the visitors to Bramall Lane when Webb inadvertently directed the ball past his own goalkeeper. Macklin pulled one back late on.
