Roy Hodgson is set to be dealt an injury blow with the news that Jack Wilshere could miss both of England's internationals this summer.

The Arsenal star, who came of the bench for the remaining 19 minutes of his side's 1-0 win at Fulham yesterday, is poised to undergo surgery at the end of the season.

BABY LOVE

Wilshere is set to become a dad for the second time later this year. The Arsenal midfielder's partner, Lauren Neal, is expecting in October.

Wilshere has only recently returned to first-team action after a six-week injury lay-off.

And according to the Sunday Mirror, the 21-year-old may now require surgery to replace a pin inserted into his ankle during an operation in 2011.

That would leave Roy Hodgson without Wilshere for the friendlies against Republic of Ireland on May 29 and June 2.

Arsene Wenger meanwhile has blasted Steve Sidwell for the reckless tackle which earned him a red card in Arsenal's vital win over Fulham.

Sidwell will miss Fulham's last four games of the season after he saw red for the second time in two appearances.

The former Arsenal midfielder, who was given a straight red for a dangerous tackle on QPR defender Armand Traore three weeks ago, caught Mikel Arteta on his standing foot with a two-footed lunge just 12 minutes in to this afternoon's London derby at Craven Cottage.

Wenger also ended the game with 10 men after Olivier Giroud caught Stanislav Manolev with a last-minute lunge.

The Gunners boss had no qualms with Giroud's sending off, and that of Sidwell, which he thinks could have caused serious injury to Arteta had it happened a millisecond earlier.

'I think the referee could only give a red card (to Sidwell),' the Arsenal manager said.

'We will see (if Arteta is OK). He played the second-half. I don't know how much damage is done. It is a kick, a bad kick.

'I don't know if he has twisted his ankle or not. In these kind of things it is a question of a fraction of a second.

'If you are fully on your foot at the moment you get it you break your leg. If you ease a bit off maybe that is why he got away with it.'

Fulham 2 Newcastle 1: Rodallega grabs rare win as Pardew's men slide towards danger

Alan Pardew passed two years in charge of Newcastle United on Monday night, but it will not be an anniversary the manager looks back on with particular fondness.

He tinkered with his formation and cajoled his players constantly, but yet another away defeat leaves the visitors only four places above the relegation zone.

It may yet get worse: they must play Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal before the turn of the year, while Sunderland, in 18th place, have a game in hand against Reading on Tuesday.

For Fulham, though, there is hope
again and, crucially, goals. Martin Jol’s side had gone more than five
hours without scoring before Steve Sidwell’s 19th-minute strike.

Even that was a little fortunate, as
the midfielder’s right-foot shot took a heavy deflection off Mike
Williamson and cannoned in off the underside of the bar. But a second
from Hugo Rodallega gave Fulham their first Premier League victory since
October.

The gloom, however, only increases for Newcastle, despite Hatem Ben Arfa scoring on his return from a hamstring injury.

‘I’m worried in that we’re not
picking up enough points,’ said Pardew. ‘The performances are much
improved, there’s more fluency about our attacking play, but it’s a
worry. We haven’t got enough points and we’ve got a tough run of games.
But if we keep working as hard as we did tonight, I think it will
change.’

Injuries have not been kind to Newcastle but there was little excuse for their defending.

Only a covering tackle from Danny
Simpson had prevented Alex Kacaniklic scoring after just 60 seconds,
while the manner in which Rodallega was allowed to chest down a Damien
Duff cross in the box after 17 minutes provided particular cause for
concern.

Newcastle had plenty of chances and
Sascha Riether, who was excellent at right back for the hosts, cleared
two shots off the line from Fabricio Coloccini and Demba Ba before Ben
Arfa’s goal.

But it could have been far worse for the visitors if Tim Krul had not performed so well.

They were continually exposed by
Fulham’s width, especially down the right. Duff’s two assists equalled
his tally in 68 appearances for Newcastle, while the home side’s
willingness to mix the odd long ball over the top with the attacking
guile of Dimitar Berbatov and Rodallega was impressive.

‘That was vital for us,’ said Jol. ‘I was so happy we scored first because that was our problem in the last couple of weeks.

'At 2-1 we should have scored two or
three. We showed some character but I’m pleased we finished it off.
After losing Clint Dempsey I’m very happy that Berbatov came to this
club. He’s an unbelievable player.’

Whisper it, but Berbatov not only
exhibited all the style and swagger we expect but he worked hard in the
absence of Bryan Ruiz, who has suffered a setback in his return from a
hamstring injury.

Pardew’s 4-3-3 formation left Berbatov with room to ‘orchestrate’, as he put it.

Newcastle were also exposed in
central midfield, with Sidwell and Chris Baird picking off passes
comfortably and protecting their back four. The visiting boss was forced
into a change after his side went behind, slotting Ben Arfa back into a
midfield four.

The Frenchman looked a little off the
pace in his first start for a month, but still took it upon himself to
embarrass Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer with a shot that found the
roof of the net after 53 minutes. It took a deflection off John Arne
Riise, but Fulham players were culpable of standing off Ben Arfa, and
were duly punished.

Jol’s side have thrown away 14 points from winning positions and it quickly looked as if would be a similar case.

But then Duff, booed throughout the
match by supporters of his former club, curled in a beautiful free-kick
from the right after 63 minutes. Rodallega eluded Coloccini with ease —
it was shocking defending from Newcastle and particularly their captain
— to give Fulham their first win in eight games.

They had to hold on in the final
minutes, however. Coloccini hit the bar with a stinging shot, substitute
Shola Ameobi attempted a right-foot effort and Jonas Gutierrez also
came close.

Wayne Rooney must score more – Sir Alex Ferguson

Goal-shy: Rooney is facing one of his worst droughts

Sir Alex Ferguson has challenged Wayne Rooney to rediscover his goalscoring form after one of the striker’s worst starts to a season.

Rooney has scored only three goals in 14 games for United, including a penalty. It is his poorest return at this stage of the campaign in his nine seasons at Old Trafford, except for two years ago when he was distracted by the contract crisis that almost saw him leave the club.

Indeed, by this time last year, Rooney had already racked up 12 goals — the same amount Robin van Persie has scored so far in his first season at United. In fairness to Rooney, Van Persie’s arrival has forced him to play a deeper role and the England striker has responded by contributing six assists in the Premier League. But Ferguson reminded him yesterday that he has to improve his goal return as well.

WAYNE ROONEY is not the only England striker struggling for goals. A

proves that some of the biggest names have failed to fire this season.

‘I’m happy with that part of his game
and he can contribute to the team’s success, fine, but we would rather
he scored more, obviously,’ said the United boss. ‘I think he’s going
through a period that all strikers do. He’s not scoring and it will
change once he starts to score regularly. Wayne is the type of player
who can’t miss games. He’s missed bits of games and he was off with
tonsillitis. With his frame and the type of person he is, he needs to
play all the time.’

Ferguson revealed that Nani could be
sidelined for up to five weeks with a hamstring injury. Antonio Valencia
is also racing to be fit for next weekend’s Manchester derby with the
hip injury that will force him to miss today’s trip to Reading.

There was better news for United as
captain Nemanja Vidic returned to training this week, earlier than
expected following knee surgery. Vidic could even play in Wednesday’s
final Champions League group game against CFR Cluj, although he is
unlikely to be risked at the Etihad Stadium four days later.

‘I wouldn’t be afraid of playing him in the European game,’ said Ferguson, who has also seen central defenders Chris Smalling and Phil Jones return from long injury layoffs. ‘It’s amazing that we’ve been beset with defensive injuries for quite a long period and, now we’ve got our defenders back, we’ve got two wide players injured.’

He must also decide whether to pick Anders Lindegaard ahead of David de Gea in goal again. Lindegaard has kept De Gea on the bench for the last two games after the Spaniard returned from dental surgery and Ferguson is wary of rotating his keepers too often.

‘I’m not happy to do it all the time,’ he added. ‘I think that creates consistency and that’s why I’ve kept Anders in. I could easily have changed it again but he has done nothing wrong.

‘Hopefully, David understands that; there is no long-term issue. They are both good keepers.’

Rafael Benitez was booed off instead of on to the field tonight after Chelsea produced a second straight bore draw in the west London derby against Fulham.

Three days after Benitez's first game in charge of the Blues saw him endure a savage reception from his new club's supporters, he was unable to turn the jeers into cheers as they slipped further off the pace in the Barclays Premier League.

And, as on Sunday against Manchester City, they could have easily lost against a Fulham side who had the better of the chances and a striker in Dimitar Berbatov who completely outshone opposite number Fernando Torres.

David Luiz's skied free-kick was the
first shot at goal after 25 minutes, the creativity of the rested Juan
Mata becoming more and more conspicuous by its absence.

Some speedy football from Oscar
finally created a real chance just before the half hour but Torres's
weak shot on the turn from Cesar Azpilicueta's cross was straight at
Mark Schwarzer.

Benitez said yesterday Torres needed
to get down the gym and he was given a lesson in brute power moments
later by Berbatov, who forcefully shrugged off the recalled Oriol Romeu.

Torres' flimsiness aside, Chelsea were
beginning to get round the back and more than one cross prompted more
than one desperate lunge.

And after a goalless first half, there
was another crucial tackle shortly after the restart when Mahamadou
Diarra stopped Oscar finishing off Hazard's pass.

But Chelsea could have fallen behind
twice in quick succession inside 10 minutes, an errant offside flag
rescuing them after Berbatov perfectly timed his run on to Diarra's
flighted ball, and Petr Cech saving from John Arne Riise following a
flowing breakaway.

Ramires and Giorgios Karagounis both

Fulham sent on Chris Baird for Diarra

He, Oscar and Hazard wasted a great

The Bulgarian's coolness helped win a
dangerous free-kick that got Luiz cautioned before more composed play
set up Riise for a fierce drive Cech only just repelled.

In between that, Kerim Frei replaced Karagounis.

Torres finally found some space with
just over 10 minutes remaining but his angled volley after good chest
control was cleared by Aaron Hughes and may have been going wide anyway.

Frei had a dubious penalty appeal
turned down before Marko Marin was handed his Premier League debut in
place of Hazard and Mladen Petric came on for Hugo Rodallega.

With time running out, the crowd finally turned their anger on Benitez, who was urging his team forward.

Dutifully, they spent the closing
moments camped in the Fulham box but despite a succession of blocked
shots and other near misses, they could not force a breakthrough.

His first was the decisive strike in the previous home match, the 1-0 win over QPR on November 10, and Stoke are now unbeaten in 13 games on their own turf in the league stretching back to February.

Tony Pulis' side, who were the better team overall this afternoon and nearly had another goal when Ryan Shawcross headed against the bar, now have three victories to their name this season and are up to 11th in the table on 16 points.

Fulham, meanwhile, stay ninth and are now winless in their last five games. In driving rain, it was the visitors who made the brighter start, with Giorgos Karagounis lashing an effort across goal and wide on two minutes.

There was a shaky moment soon after for Stoke as goalkeeper Asmir Begovic misread a back-pass, but the ball was cleared away and the home side began to settle down.

Robert Huth headed the clearest opportunity yet wide from Matthew Etherington's corner on the quarter hour-mark and the Potters continued to pressurise, with Adam sending the ball over after juggling it in the area.

Moments later the Scotland midfielder scored, taking one touch in the six-yard box when Peter Crouch headed Ryan Shotton's cross his way before swivelling and firing the ball in.

The hosts kept up the momentum as Glenn Whelan tried his luck from the edge of the area, drilling wide, and Shawcross almost made it 2-0 in the 36th minute when he clattered a header against the bar.

Fulham immediately broke forward, with Mladen Petric coming to meet a cross into the box but unable to finish, and Dimitar Berbatov – captain for the day in place of the suspended Brede Hangeland – then saw a delivery into the danger-zone scrambled away.

Stoke looked eager to wrap things up as the second half got under way and seconds after the restart Whelan scooped an effort over from Jon Walters' tee-up.

Their opponents had ideas of their own though, and after Karagounis had ballooned over, Steve Sidwell dived to connect with an Ashkan Dejagah cross only for the ball to skim harmlessly off his head.

There was then a scare for Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, who dropped a high ball but managed to smother it before anyone could pounce.

Adam, who was putting in a lively display, saw an effort deflect wide and Schwarzer then tipped away a header by Huth from one Etherington corner, before Shawcross nodded another off-target.

Fulham survived a scramble in the area after a Schwarzer punch, and then went close as Berbatov's drive was tipped away by Begovic.

Pulis had brought on Michael Kightly, who struck over, and with the visitors showing endeavour towards the end but unable to find an equaliser.

Another Stoke substitute Kenwyne Jones thought he had doubled his side's lead in the dying moments, but was flagged offside.

Everton were stunned after Steve Sidwell fired a late equaliser that allowed Fulham to escape with a point from their Barclays Premier League clash at Craven Cottage.

Only desperate defending and wayward
finishing, chiefly from Nikica Jelavic, prevented Everton from adding
the scores their superiority deserved – until Marouane Fellaini
intervened.

The roaming Belgium forward took his
tally for the season to five goals in 10 matches with two clinical
finishes, demonstrating his strength to hit the second.

Fulham manager Martin Jol identified
Everton in the build up to the game as the 'best of the rest', the
benchmark to which a club like his must aspire, and he will be
cherishing the luckiest of points.

Leading 2-1 and creating chance after
chance against a team rarely overwhelmed at home, they failed to
produce the third goal they needed to kill the game off and paid a high
price.

David Moyes could barely believe his
eyes when substitute Sidwell stabbed home Sascha Riether's cross as
injury time beckoned and the furious Everton manager stalked from the
pitch at the final whistle.

A mazy early run from Kevin Mirallas,
who had recovered from an ankle injury to start, was bettered by
Dimitar Berbatov moments later.

The Bulgarian weaved a path across
the edge of the penalty area and the only way Everton could halt his
progress was for Phil Neville to hack him down.

It proved a costly mistake as at the
ensuing free-kick Bryan Ruiz curled the set piece over the wall towards
the right side of the net.

Keeper Tim Howard got a hand to the
ball but only pushed it on to the woodwork and the rebound struck him on
the back and crossed the line.

Fulham held the lead but it was
Everton who were spending more time on the ball, launching a series of
attacks lacking only in a killer final ball.

The lively Steven Pienaar, back from
suspension, lofted two dangerous long passes into the box, giving the
Cottagers defence little margin for error.

Slick interchange between Ruiz,
Riether and Damien Duff created space on the right but Phil Jagielka
intercepted the final pass with Berbatov lurking.

Much of Everton's passing was quick
and inventive with Nikica Jelavic wasting a half-chance created by a
pinpoint cross from Leighton Baines.

A curling shot from Seamus Coleman
was saved by Mark Schwarzer and only stout defending from Fulham was
preventing Everton from equalising.

Jagielka blasted just wide of the

The second half started in a similar vein with Fulham's goal being peppered by the visitors.

Brede Hangeland produced a commanding
header to clear and seconds later Jelavic nodded a cross from Baines to
the far post, where Marouane Fellaini just failed to connect.

The equaliser was inevitable given Everton's dominance and it arrived in the 55th minute through Fellaini.

Mirallas switched on the afterburners
to dash free down the right before finding out Fellaini, who drilled
the ball home from eight yards out.

With time to compose himself and pick
his spot, Berbatov was kept out by Howard from a tight angle as Fulham
sought to deliver a swift response.

Jelavic, played in by Fellaini, was about to pull the trigger from six yards out but Riether executed a perfect tackle.

Chances continued to come thick and

Hangeland nodded over the crossbar,
while at the other end the irresistible Fellaini struck the right post
and was denied by a fine save from Schwarzer.

Disaster struck for Everton in the
dying moments when Berbatov missed Riether's cross, but Sidwell was

David Moyes was stunned by Everton's failure to win despite overwhelming Fulham throughout in their Barclays Premier League clash at Craven Cottage.

It was a sickening outcome for
frustrated Moyes, who watched his side's slick passing and invention
create a host of chances that went begging.

'I can't believe we only got a draw out of that, it's incredible,' the Everton boss said.

'We've played really well this season but that one we should have won. We were terrific at times but couldn't get the goals.

'I'm really frustrated because if I
really want to hang on to the boys at the top I need to win these games
when they come along.

'To win away in the Premier League is really hard for any side and we should have won that comfortably but we didn't.

'Today you'd have to go away saying Everton look as smart as any side. That's the way we've been playing.'

Apart from Bryan Ruiz's seventh
minute free-kick and Sidwell's late strike, Fulham were over-run as
Everton created chance after chance.

Marouane Fellaini buried two of them,
but Nikica Jelavic, Steven Pienaar and Steven Naismith were among those
who failed to capitalise on the second-half fireworks.

'Give Fulham credit, they kept at it
and their keeper made a couple of saves, but we were incredibly wasteful
in front of goal,' Moyes said.

'We were playing that well last
season, the difference was Nikica was fully firing and at the end of all
that good play he was the one getting us the goals. That's just form,
it comes and goes.

'We went 2-1 up and Steven Naismith misses a couple of good chances to put it out of sight.'

Martin Jol admitted Fulham had been
taught a lesson, but offered only limited sympathy for Everton failing
to claim the reward they deserved.

'It doesn't mean anything in football
if you don't score the goals,' Jol said. 'They dominated us, all we
could do was try to be positive. They are a very good footballing team.
They are a settled team and know exactly what to do.

'Normally we are a good team, but I couldn't see that today. Although we took the lead I still felt they were stronger.

'The only positive thing I can say is that we never gave up.'

Dimitar Berbatov appeared to have struck the winner for Fulham moments earlier after driving home Steve Sidwell's pass, but Reading refused to throw in the towel.

The Royals' search for a first Premier League win of the season continues, but they will take comfort from twice hauling in their opponents' lead.

They created the first chance for former Fulham striker Pavel Pogrebnyak, who will have nightmares over the fifth-minute sitter he nodded wide of the left post from five yards out.

The Russian had done the hard work, outmuscling Fulham's defence as he leapt to connect with Nicky Shorey's cross, only to head the ball wide.

Wonderful link-up play masterminded by Hugo Rodallega presented Berbatov with a half-chance, but his hard shot drifted outside the right post.

It was then Rodallega's turn to rue his
lack of composure as he sent a wonderful cross by Kieran Richardson
straight into the arms of Alex McCarthy.

Reading surged ahead with a magnificent 27th-minute goal from Mikele Leigertwood who drilled the ball home from 20 yards.

Skipper Jobi McAnuff did the initial
damage with an intelligent run that ended with an inch-perfect pass to
the unmarked Leigertwood who gave the diving Mark Schwarzer no chance.

Rodallega's wastefulness continued as once again he directed a glorious opportunity straight at the grateful McCarthy.

Heavy rain had given way to sunshine and the capacity crowd were enjoying a lively encounter between two well-matched sides.

Fulham attacked with great speed, but occasionally were left exposed to the counter.

Berbatov yelled in frustration as he sought to offload the ball only to be surrounded by static team-mates, and Reading quickly regained possession.

Jimmy Kebe was finding space down the right with McAnuff just failing to reach one cross.

Moments later Jason Roberts, who again did not wear a Kick It Out T-shirt during the warm-up, darted past left-back John Arne Riise before his deflected shot was bundled to safety.

Reading's ascendancy was brought to an abrupt halt in the 62nd minute when Fulham equalised through Bryan Ruiz.

The Costa Rican forward exchanged passes with Damien Duff before dispatching a tremendous shot struck with vicious force past McCarthy.

They were rewarded when Chris Baird fired his second goal in two matches, heading home Ruiz's corner in the 78th minute – seven days after condemning Aston Villa to defeat with another late strike.

The score did not come without cost, however, as the Northern Ireland international then limped off having injured himself during the celebration.

Former Manchester United man Berbatov appeared to have stuck a classy winner, but Robson-Kanu had the final say.

Fulham 1 Aston Villa 0: Baird pops up late to pile pressure on Lambert

Fulham midfielder Chris Baird upstaged his returning team-mate Dimitar Berbatov with the late winner as Fulham condemned Aston Villa to more away day misery.

Baird got a deft touch to John Arne Riise's near-post corner to beat goalkeeper Brad Guzan and deny Villa what looked increasingly like a battling point.

Fulham had been the better side, with Berbatov in commanding form on his comeback from a hip injury, but they had failed to convert a hatful of chances.

The home support were beginning to get
edgy when the man they hail as 'Bairdinho' popped up with the kind of
finish Berbatov would have been proud of to snatch the points for
Fulham.

Villa, who had not won on the road in 13 Barclays Premier League matches
dating back to January, had a chance to rescue a point but Christian
Benteke missed a sitter from close-range.

Benteke had been sent on for Darren Bent, who was restored to the Villa
starting line-up after being dropped for the last two matches.

Bent failed to make much of impression – glancing one header wide and
otherwise cutting a picture of frustration up front – unlike Berbatov.

The serene Bulgarian was immediately into the action, playing a key role
as Fulham pressed Guzan into action twice inside the first five
minutes.

Berbatov found a yard of space inside the Villa box and turned on Kieran
Richardson's pass but Guzan reacted quickly to palm the shot away from
an acute angle.

The Bulgarian still has this wonderful ability to play the game at his
own pace and he calmly held off the attentions of Nathan Baker to bring
Sascha Riether into the box.

The German full-back squeezed a pass through to Richardson six yards out
but Guzan blocked his shot and Riether's effort from the rebound went
wide.

Baker's response was to hack Berbatov down from behind, which seemed
just about the only way Villa were going to win the ball off him.

Fulham appeared capable of scoring every time they were in possession.

Chris Baird and Steve Sidwell anchored the midfield and they always had
runners, with John Arne Riise and Riether given the freedom to attack
from full-back and stretch Villa.

At times Fulham played with five attackers as Richardson, Hugo Rodallega
and the busy Mladen Petric supported Berbatov in causing Villa
problems.

Brede Hangeland ran out of defence and slid a pass to Berbatov, who
clipped a magnificent cross on the turn towards Baird but the header was
wide.

Gabriel Agbonlahor created Villa's first opportunity himself, cutting in
from the left before unleashing a deflected shot which brought a diving
save from Mark Schwarzer.

Bent could not get enough on Matthew Lowton's cross from the right wing
and his glancing header drifted harmlessly wide but that was as close as
Villa came in the first half.

Riise whipped one cross in for Berbatov, who did well to force a save
from Guzan, and then another for Rodallega but the Colombian headed
wide.

Agbonlahor was working hard for Villa and he tried to pick out Bent in
the Fulham box but Sidwell, enjoying a strong game against his old club,
was on hand to intercept.

Villa started the second-half brightly, with Agbonlahor heading over the
bar from Lowton's cross but Fulham still looked the more likely team to
score.

Karim El Ahmadi was booked for a foul on Berbatov that checked a Fulham counter-attack.

Berbatov failed to make decent contact as he attempted an acrobatic
volley after Rodallega's cross had fallen to him at the far post.

Villa failed to clear their lines properly and it required a brave block
from Lowton to deny Richardson, before Bent was replaced by Benteke.

Ashkan Dejagah came on for Fulham to make his debut and was quickly in
the thick of the action, stinging Guzan's hands with a 25-yard drive
after some sublime build-up play.

Then came the breakthrough. Baird stole in front of Eric Lichaj, Fabian
Delph and Bennett to get a touch to Riise's corner and beat Guzan at the
near post.

The reaction inside Craven Cottage as much one of relief as celebration – although that should have been cut short immediately.

Charles N'Zogbia squared the ball to Benteke six yards out but he
inexplicably failed to hit the target and with that miss went Villa's
hopes of a point.

Southampton 2 Fulham 2: Jose Fonte rescues point for Saints

Southampton 2 Fulham 2: Fonte rescues dramatic point in injury time as Saints move out of bottom three

Jose Fonte's last-gasp header secured Southampton a point and saved defensive partner Jos Hooiveld's blushes against Fulham.

The Portuguese centre-back nodded home a 90th-minute leveller in a game in which he had broken the deadlock after just four minutes.

Hooiveld scored an own goal in Southampton's 6-1 humbling at Arsenal and did so again on the south coast when he directed home a speculative John Arne Riise drive in the second half.

Hooiveld, who came on eight minutes into the clash after Frazer Richardson suffered a thigh injury, then saw Kieran Richardson's close-range strike brush off him on its way in two minutes from time, although the goal was credited to the Fulham man.

However, Fonte saved the Dutchman and his side late on to earn Southampton a fourth point of the campaign.

The hosts began brightly and the
returning Morgan Schneiderlin fired a wayward warning shot, before
Rickie Lambert headed into the side-netting after connecting with a
Danny Fox corner from the right.

Southampton had their second corner by the fourth minute and made their early dominance count.
Adam Lallana floated the set-piece in from the left and Fonte's glanced
header at the near post looped over goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer and into
the far corner.

Richardson was forced off in the
eighth minute for the hosts and his departure forced a defensive
reshuffle, with replacement Hooiveld forcing Maya Yoshida out wide.

Fulham began to make headway, with Lambert blocking Aaron Hughes from a corner before the Northern Irishman headed over.

Saints, though, were still looking
dangerous and came agonisingly close to doubling their advantage as Jay
Rodriguez beat the offside trap and pulled back for Lambert, whose
right-footed effort just went wide.

The home side continued to press and Jason Puncheon twice came close from 22nd-minute corners.
Puncheon was denied on the goal-line by Sascha Riether and then, from
the following corner, the wide man was adjudged to have fouled Schwarzer
prior to prodding home.

Lambert forced Schwarzer into action
at his near post after collecting a fine pass from Puncheon, but Fulham
stepped up the pressure as half-time approached and home goalkeeper
Paulo Gazzaniga was required for the first time in stoppage time when
Hughes headed goalwards. The Cottagers again came close as Hooiveld
failed to deal with a hopeful long ball and Hugo Rodallega poked wide
under pressure from Gazzaniga.

That momentum continued into the
second half but it was still Southampton enjoying the best
opportunities, with Lambert volleying over a driven Schneiderlin cross
from the right.

Schwarzer spilt a hopeful 25-yard
effort from Rodriguez after a great surge forward but Fulham were
looking a more dangerous opponent and twice came close in the 60th
minute.

Gazzaniga did terrifically to push a
close-range Rodallega header away moments after Steve Sidwell bundled
the ball onto the post.

Fulham could have also been awarded a
penalty after Yoshida appeared to handle in the midst of the action.
Both sides made changes in a bid to change the match but it was an
earlier substitute whose impact was felt on the south coast.

Riise drilled a low shot from the
left and centre-back Hooiveld could only direct it into his own goal,
putting Fulham level in the 69th minute.

The goal had been coming and
the Cottagers threatened to go ahead, with substitute Kieran Richardson
putting a Riether cross over.

Rodriguez nodded wide for the hosts

The substitute looked to have
earned Fulham three points but he gave away a late free-kick from which
Fonte headed home to earn Saints a point.
