QPR midfielder Joey Barton will face no further action after being arrested for affray.

The 29-year-old was involved in a fight with two men outside a nightclub in Liverpool city centre in the early hours of June 4.

Barton was reportedly on a night out with his girlfriend when the incident took place outside the Garlands nightclub on Eberle Street.

After being arrested, the Merseyside-born midfielder, who lives in Widnes, Cheshire, tweeted: 'I got sucker punched in the back of the head.

'Not injured as reported just a small bruise on rear of head/ear.

'I've had worse. Life goes on! Thanks for the concern. Have a good day people.'

A picture of the incident, apparently showing a shirtless Barton being held back by police and a woman, was also circulated on Twitter.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: 'Merseyside Police can confirm that four men arrested in connection with an altercation in Eberle Street, Liverpool city centre on June 4 will face no further police action.

'The four – two 21-year-olds from Liverpool, a 29-year-old from Widnes, Cheshire, and a 20-year-old from Liverpool – had been arrested on suspicion of affray, and subsequently released on police bail.

'All four have now been notified by the police that, following advice from the Crown Prosecution Service, they will not face any further action.'

Barton has a long history of controversy, both on and off the pitch.

In 2008, he was given a six-month jail term after admitting assault and affray during an incident which also took place in Liverpool city centre.

In May, he was given a 12-match ban by the Football Association and fined 75,000 for violent conduct during QPR's defeat at Manchester City on the final day of the season.

Joey Barton is confident he will not be charged after the Bank Holiday street brawl in Liverpool.

Barton, 29, is on bail after being accused of provoking two men arrested for assault.

But the fact that he was involved in yet another controversial incident has angered members of the QPR hierarchy.

QPR midfielder Joey Barton was arrested on Monday on suspicion of affray after an altercation outside a nightclub in Liverpool, sources said.

Barton, 29, was involved in trouble in the early hours of Monday while on a night out with his girlfriend in Liverpool city centre.

Two men, aged 21 and from the Old Swan area of Liverpool, were arrested on suspicion of a public order offence at around 5:30am at the scene of the incident, outside Garlands nightclub in the city.

But after they were held in custody and questioned, Barton and a 20-year-old man were also arrested this afternoon.

All have been bailed pending further inquiries, apart from Barton, who remains in police custody where he will be questioned by officers.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: 'Following an altercation in Eberle Street, Liverpool city centre, in the early hours of this morning, four men have been arrested on suspicion of affray.

Joey Barton has played down the 5.30am fracas outside a nightclub that resulted in police tending to the QPR midfielder, by insisting that he was not injured in the attack.

The controversial star was involved in a fight with two men outside Garlands nightclub in Liverpool city centre.

Barton, who decided not to press charges, took to Twitter later to say: 'I got sucker punched in the back of the head. Not injured as reported just a small bruise on rear of head/ear.

'Not planning on pressing charges as its not that serious. The police have also got better things to do with their time.'

He added: 'Can I just say a public thanks to the police last night as they were and have been today brilliant.'

'On arrival officers found a 29-year-old man who had sustained injuries to his face. The man left the scene voluntarily.

'Two 21-year-old men from the L13
area were arrested at the scene for a public order offence. They are
currently in police custody.'

QPR's press officer Ian Taylor
claimed Barton was on his way home with his girlfriend when he was
taunted by two men singing offensive chants.

'Joey Barton was involved in an incident in Liverpool City centre in the early hours of Monday morning,' Taylor posted.

'Barton was on his way home from a
night out with his girlfriend when two men sang offensive chants and
then proceeded to hit the midfielder.

'Police were immediately on the scene
and arrested one man. Barton decided not to press charges and left with
his girlfriend soon after.

It was alleged that the footballer had to be 'physically removed' from Garlands by security staff before he was punched outside.

Makepeace, a friend of Garlands staff, wrote on Twitter: 'Just spoke to
the lads at Garlands Liverpool who told me that Joseph Barton was
physically removed from the club before the fracas outside.'

Nobody from the club was available to confirm the events leading up to the attack

News of the fight was widely commented on on Twitter, with 'Joey Barton' and 'Garlands' trending on the social media site.

@JoshGore-11, who claimed to have been at the scene, said Barton had 'looked in a bad way' after the fight.

The Liverpool-born footballer has a
long history of controversy on and off the pitch and has become
well-known for his opinionated tweets.

Last month he was given a 12-match
ban by the Football Association after being sent off during QPR's defeat

Joey Barton was injured after being punched outside a Liverpool nightclub in the early hours of the morning.

The controversial QPR midfielder was involved in a fight with two men outside Garlands nightclub in Liverpool city centre.

Barton decided not to press charges.
