Xabi Alonso has admitted he could make a stunning return to the Premier League.

The Real Madrid midfielder, 31, has 18 months remaining on his contract with the Spanish giants and talks over extending it are on hold.

Alonso spent five years at Liverpool before returning to his homeland in 2009.

'I've no idea what will happen,' Alonso told reporters in Spain.

'I have not decided on my future. I will only stay at Real Madrid if I can offer the same level on the pitch as I can now and we will see what happens in the next few months.

'There is always a chance I could go back to the Premier League as I always enjoyed good times there.'

Alonso helped Liverpool win the Champions League, FA Cup and Community Shield before adding to his trophy haul in Madrid.

Last season's La Liga title followed the club's Copa del Rey triumph a year earlier while Alonso was an integral part of the Spain sides which won Euro 2008 and 2012, along with the 2010 World Cup.

He was also named the best midfielder in the Spanish top flight last season.

Fernando Torres has insisted he wants to stay at Chelsea and win more trophies.

Torres has endured a wretched two years at Stamford Bridge in terms of his personal form, despite winning the Champions League, FA Cup and European Championship in that time.

The 50million man, who has scored just

European champions.

But asked whether he felt vindicated
over his decision to quit Liverpool in January 2011, Torres told
FIFA.com: 'One of the main reasons to come to Chelsea was that they are
always aiming for trophies. I needed to win trophies because they are
what you have after you have finished.

'In my first full season, we won the
FA Cup and Champions League. What more can you ask We have a chance now
to win the FIFA Club World Cup.

'I have four more years on my
contract so hopefully I can win many more things – the Premier League
would be amazing. The Capital One Cup and the Community Shield also.'

Didier Drogba's departure in the
summer has meant Torres becoming Chelsea's first-choice striker, the
28-year-old starting almost every game this season.

He said: 'I'm very happy about that because it's the role I like. Hopefully, it can be like this until the end of the season.'

Torres has failed to score in the
Premier League for almost two months, a drought that has co-incided
almost exactly with Chelsea's seven-match winless run, their worst for
15 years.

Torres added: 'We still have to improve other things as a team but I think we have the players. We just need more time.

These are dark times for Arsenal football club, right Amid the club's worst start to a league season for 18 years, the talk is end of days stuff.

Manna from heaven for the likes of us Tottenham fans, surely Well no, not quite.

Because if anything, supporting Spurs for 26 years as I have teaches you one thing: Arsenal have an uncanny knack of wriggling free from difficulties which beset the club.

New low Defeat to Swansea came after protests outside the Emirates

New low Defeat to Swansea came followed protests outside the Emirates

New low Defeat to Swansea came after protests outside the Emirates

Granted, the club are well on target to complete an eighth successive trophyless year, but any talk of continuing their downward trend is ridiculous.

I'll say it now: I fully expect them to finish in the top four this season. And probably at Spurs' expense.

This isn't even the club's most difficult moment in the Barclays Premier League.

In the nine years under George Graham, the Gunners were derided as 'boring, boring Arsenal'.

Yet they landed two (old) First Division titles, one FA Cup, two Football League Cups, one UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, and one (shared) Community Shield.

Graham's exit came in February 1995 after the revelation he took 425,000 from Norwegian agent Rune Hauge in connection with the transfers of John Jensen and Pal Lydersen.

Stewart Houston took the reins and the club limped to a 12th place finish – five places and 11 points behind Spurs.

How did they bounce back

They
hired Bruce Rioch, who was ousted after just one year at the helm in
the summer of 1996 after the club finished fifth place in the Premier
League.

(After 15 games of that season Arsenal were third with 28 points on the board, 10 points behind then-leaders Newcastle United.)

Another disaster No, not in the slightest.

Because while the club failed to qualify for the Champions League, Rioch left the club one of its greatest gifts: Dennis Bergkamp.

Arsene Wenger duly arrived and ushered in the most successful spell the club have ever experienced, what with the two Doubles, the Invincibles and the (painful) rest.

And there-in lies the rub: no matter how bad things have been, the club always find a way, always find an answer to their predicaments.

And if that sounds like a compliment, well that's because it is meant to.

Tottenham's plan in the same period seems to have revolved around spending as much money as possible with the least possible gain.

Crisis What crisis! Even the days of Rioch were lined with hope - as Bergkamp arrived at Highbury

The club's spending is only over shadowed by the likes Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool in recent seasons.

And in the past 26 years what have Spurs won Two League Cups and the FA Cup.

The Black Scarf Movement (BSM), a supporters' protest group, gathered outside the Emirates Stadium before the match with Swansea on Saturday to stage a vocal protest march to the ground.

Upset at escalating ticket prices, the composition of the club's board – including the role of chief executive Ivan Gazidis – and a lack of silverware.

From someone who has had to watch the club's success in recent generations – from four miles up the road – I'll tell you one thing: give your club a break, they will get it right in the end, unfortunately they always do.

Jose Mourinho will "quit Real Madrid in summer"

Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon believes Jose Mourinho will leave the Spanish champions at the end of the season.

Calderon, who was president elect at Madrid between 2006 and 2009 before Mourinho was brought in as manager at the club, said: 'Is Mourinho going to stay at Real at end of season He has already decided to leave in my opinion.

'I'm not certain but in my opinion
he's fed up with what's happening and some people are fed up with his
attitude and behaviour. I believe he's already made his decision to
leave.'

Calderon also criticised Mourinho for his behaviour at the club and said it does not fit with Real Madrid's history.

He added, in an interview with BBC

'The problem with Mourinho, and he is an amazing

The news will interest Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, who sacked Roberto Di

Mourinho won six trophies –
including two Premier League cups, an FA Cup, two League Cups and a
Community Shield – but was sacked by Abramovich after failing to win the

They do things differently at Chelsea, chopping through seven managers in nine years before Roberto Di Matteo delivered the Champions League in May.

At any other club the Italian would be inducted into a hall of fame in recognition of his achievements since replacing Andre Villas-Boas on March 4.

Instead, the man who brought Chelsea their first European Cup is hanging on to his job ahead of tomorrow's clash with Juventus in Turin.

The club started the season with the chance to win seven trophies but are already out of two.

In Abramovich's circle, it has been noted that Chelsea played 13 matches to qualify for the UEFA Super Cup final against Atletico Madrid in Monaco and seven FA Cup ties to compete with Manchester City for the Community Shield.

They lost both and will be in danger of becoming the first Champions League winners in history to go out in the group stage if they are beaten in the new Juventus Stadium.

Abramovich left Di Matteo to it, opting against a customary training-ground visit to exert a little pressure on the manager.

But he is agitated again, unhappy with the team's performance and questioning the desire of Di Matteo's players after the manager made six changes at the Hawthorns.

The idea of a 'weakened team' is inconceivable to a man who has pumped the best part of 1billion into his Chelsea project since 2003.

The pressure is on and Di Matteo is aware that his managerial abilities are being scrutinised just six months after he celebrated with the European Cup.

Ever since Pep Guardiola let it be known that Chelsea is his favoured destination when he returns from a year- long sabbatical in New York, connections are being made all over the club.

For instance, Chelsea's technical director Michael Emenalo makes no secret of the fact that he has a solid friendship with Guardiola's former right-hand man Tito Vilanova, now coach at Barcelona.

Then there is the change of style that Abramovich demanded in the summer, the shift of attacking emphasis and a request to play the ball out from the back.

Having acquired ball-players such as Juan Mata, Oscar and Eden Hazard over the past two seasons, the evolution of the European champions should be well under way.

Abramovich began to dismantle the European Cup-winning team when Didier Drogba quit for Shanghai Shenhua and others, such as Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole, are vulnerable after the club failed to reach agreement on new contracts.

The training-ground talk is that this is all being planned in anticipation of Guardiola's arrival, seducing the Catalan coach from afar by building a squad to suit his methods.

That will come later, but Di Matteo's immediate target is to survive a week that sees them visit Turin and then host new Barclays Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Di Matteo was thrashing ideas around with his coaching staff yesterday, fearful of the threat Juve will pose inside their own stadium.

They will target Ryan Bertrand after the left back was tormented by the through-balls of Fernandinho and shaken by the twisting runs of Willian during Chelsea's streaky 3-2 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk a fortnight ago.

On that occasion the 23-year-old was without the protection of captain John Ter ry and hi s absence, this time through a knee injury, is another consideration for Di Matteo.

So, too, is the shocking form of Fernando Torres. He was substituted after 63 minutes at the Hawthorns and is without a goal in the Premier League since Chelsea's 4-1 victory over Norwich on October 6.

Torres's body language in recent weeks tells its own story, but Chelsea's players will have to buy into Di Matteo's tactics for a tough game in Turin.

The alternative is for Abramovich to listen to that voice all over again.

Chip away the ugly crust of abusive words, snarling insults and deceit and you will find Chelsea are playing rather well.

They top the Premier League with a four-point cushion and 15 goals, are unbeaten in all but the Community Shield and the UEFA Super Cup and attack with flair.

Fernando Torres has four goals in seven League games and in Eden Hazard, Juan Mata and Oscar, Chelsea have a trio of creators with speed, vision and imagination.

‘Maybe this is what the people have to say about Chelsea, about how we play, this is what we deserve,’ said Branislav Ivanovic, scorer of their fourth in Saturday’s 4-1 win against Norwich.

‘We are always focused on the pitch. Maybe the extra pressure keeps you more concentrated.

‘We have a great front-line with new players. They already know how each other play. They are creative and dangerous and they also defend well because they control the ball so well.

‘We are happy with the four-point gap but we have to be aware and think we have done nothing big yet.’

Indeed, far greater tests are in store. Chris Hughton’s Norwich team posed sporadic threats but were flimsy in defence.

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo insists there are things to work on — ‘our shape and so on’ — and a sequence of fixtures after the international break — they travel to Tottenham and host both Manchester clubs and Liverpool — will dictate whether this is to be a real title challenge.

A ban looms for John Terry and possibly for Ashley Cole and the squad is so finely balanced that any injury to Torres leaves them short.

Frank Lampard and Ivanovic are preaching caution. They will recall the collapse two years ago after winning their first five league games in a blaze of 21 goals under Carlo Ancelotti.

‘It’s a nice patch but we’ve had nice patches in the past that have fizzled out,’ said Lampard.

‘There is a very important period coming up,’ said Ivanovic. ‘We have some very tough games.’

Roberto di Matteo is not seeking adoration. 'When you're a winning team, you're never loved,' he said after victory at Arsenal but it might be time for some appreciation.

Di Matteo cleared his first serious test of the new campaign at the Emirates and, despite the turbulence of John Terry's disciplinary hearing, he did it with minimum fuss.

Just as he did when passing last season's big tests: Barcelona in the Nou Camp, Tottenham or Liverpool at Wembley, or Bayern Munich in the Allianz Arena.

Di Matteo flies to Denmark on Monday ahead of his 30th competitive game in charge of Chelsea, against Nordsjaelland in the Champions League on Tuesday, having barely put a foot wrong.

Ignore the glorified friendlies of the FA Community Shield and the UEFA Super Cup and he has lost three games in seven months.

One was a tight contest at Manchester City, there was a home game against Newcastle when resting key players, three days before the FA Cup final, and a hammering at Liverpool with a reserve team as he prepared for the Champions League final.

Seven draws include one at Barcelona with 10 men and one against Bayern Munich in the Champions League final won on penalties.

Chelsea top the Barclays Premier League having dropped two points from six games yet the surrender of a two-goal lead to Italian champions Juventus triggered an impromptu training ground visit from owner Roman Abramovich.

Fresh: Fernando Torres says he is not in need of a break

It was a reminder of exactly how precarious Di Matteo remains while Pep Guardiola is out of work.

What manager wouldn't want the burden of expectation which comes with a front-four of Fernando Torres, Juan Mata, Oscar and Eden Hazard, priced in excess of 125million But he continues to make awkward decisions look easy.

In public, Di Matteo's poker-face refuses to crack. In private, he and his coaching team successfully cajole most of the precious and insecure egos at the club and get the best from them.

Terry started at the Emirates despite all the attention and performed well. Torres looked motivated, committed and scored his fourth in nine this season.

Frank Lampard sat on the bench at the Emirates because Chelsea wanted the mobility of Ramires in the deep midfield areas where Arsenal inflict most damage.

'First, you have to press Arsenal and make sure they don't get the kind of freedom they like to play,' said Di Matteo. 'Also, you need to keep the ball and create chances for yourself. We did that very, very well.” Santi Cazorla was more subdued than usual although Chelsea were helped out by Petr Cech and some poor finishing, notably Cazorla and Olivier Giroud in the closing stages.

When Andre Villas-Boas tried to assert changes like these he created friction but Di Matteo has taken the players with him. It is the art of management.

Rather than grumble about Mata's desire to play in Euro 2012 and then the Olympic Games, he gave him a two-week's off in September.

Mata looks refreshed and his dead-ball delivery created both goals at Arsenal. Wenger's team defended poorly but Di Matteo targeted a weakness successfully.

'I think every player would like to play every game,” said goalkeeper Cech. “The important thing is to have Juan Mata for the whole season, not for three months and then to see him burn.

'It was well done by the coaching staff. He had a nice break and now he's fit and ready and can last the whole season. That's exactly what we needed.' All this from a manager who landed in the job somewhat by accident but what is to stop Di Matteo becoming Chelsea's own Guardiola He is relatively young, ambitious, with a good tactical brain and he understands his club and its culture.

More crucially for Abramovich, he has adapted smoothly to the peculiarities of the Stamford Bridge recruitment system where players are identified and acquired at an executive level.

He quietly manages talent provided for him, while helping to improve young players like Ryan Bertrand, another demand of the Chelsea hierarchy.

A more established manager would have demanded more power and input and, over time, Di Matteo may do the same. If he survives to that point he will deserve it.

'We're only six games into a very long season,' said Di Matteo.

'We've had a good start and that's all. The time to judge is when we're coming towards the half-way stage of the season.'

It is true, greater examinations lie ahead. Terry will be banned for four games and what happens if Chelsea lose Torres to injury or suspension

Can Daniel Sturridge, out with a hamstring injury, contribute as a centre-forward And can Cech, who is managing an elbow problem which will require surgery, maintain his fitness

All the time, Di Matteo must work towards the ultimate goal of make Chelsea successful, entertaining and popular, even if he thinks it is an impossible dream.

'Teams that win trophies have never been loved in the history of football,' said Di Matteo.

'Barcelona is great, yeah, but it's a unique model that nobody has been able to replicate in the world, so far.'

Defender Kolo Toure admits Manchester City have to find an answer to their defensive problems if they want to remain in the hunt for trophies.

A much-changed team slipped to a surprise 4-2 defeat at home to Aston Villa in the third round of the Capital One Cup having twice taken the lead.

Roberto Mancini's side have conceded 14 goals in seven matches – 16 in eight matches if the Community Shield is counted – and have yet to keep a clean sheet.

Below par: Man City have made a stuttering start to the season

Conceding two late goals in the Bernabeu cost them a famous victory against Real Madrid last week and now one of the four competitions they would have expected to challenge in has slipped through their grasp.

Defensive errors certainly cost them against Villa and Toure accepts it is a concern.

'It was a disappointing night,' he said. 'The team didn't play well. We conceded four goals, which is not good, and we gave some cheap goals to Villa as well.

'It concerns us because a team like Man City cannot expect to concede four goals at home.

'Since the season started we have not had a clean sheet and that is very important when you want to be a top club, you have to defend better as a team.

'As a defender and as a group we have to work on it because mistakes were done by a few players and when you win it is every body so when you lose it is everybody.'

After the defeat Mancini accepted his side had been poor and that defensively they needed to tighten up.

'This is a problem. We need to work with our defenders because they don't work well at this moment,' said the Italian.

'When the situation is like this we have to understand our mistake and do our best for the future.'

Toure's foreseeable future seems destined to be on the bench as, after just one start and a substitute appearance prior to last night, he was hoping a good cup run would give him more pitch time.

'It is disappointing to go out,' he told CityTV. 'For us we don't have a lot of games to play in and this was a chance to have a few games but we've wasted that.

'I think it is going to be hard maybe to play now but we will work hard to try to get a chance to play in the Premier League.'

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini believes his side are still paying the price for a fractured pre-season.

City head into the Premier League encounter still searching for the form that saw them crowned Premier League champions last season.

The reason for their difficulties is not hard to spot. From having the top flight's best defensive record, City suddenly look vulnerable.

Including the Community Shield, the Blues have conceded 11 goals in six games so far this season, culminating in the three at the Bernabeu on Tuesday that cost them a famous Champions League away win over Real Madrid.

It took City 13 games to reach that number last season. And Mancini is certain he knows why there has been a change.

'For two years we were the best defence in the Premier League,' he said.

'This year we have been average. Probably the big problem was we didn't get to work properly in pre-season. Since then we lost some players and have had an international break. But if we are going to improve, we need to work.'

Joleon Lescott paid the price in midweek. Good enough to start both England's World Cup qualifiers earlier this month, the 30-year-old was left kicking his heels on the bench in Madrid as Mancini preferred teenage Serbian Matija Nastasic.

It seemed like a significant move. Yet Mancini insists it was not.

'No,' he said. 'We have played six games this season and all the players have played two or three.

'The problem was because we started pre-season in a different moment.

'Joleon came back very late. He is an important player for us but we have 23 good players. Sometimes I can change them.'

Mancini accepts the game will offer a decent guide to his team's present situation. After their own tricky start, Arsenal have hit form.

Whereas
City struggled at Anfield, and required a large slice of good fortune
to snatch a draw, the Gunners cruised to an easy away win at Liverpool.

seems to have released them.

Santi
Cazorla has already proved to be an outstanding purchase, while Germany
frontman Lukas Podolski has confounded gloomy pre-season predictions
about his contribution.

Mancini dispatched trusted reserve-team coach Attilio Lombardo to Anfield to run the rule over the Gunners three weeks ago.

And Lombardo's report suggested City need to be very wary.

'Arsenal are very strong on the counter-attack,' said Mancini.

'I watched the game against Liverpool on TV and they played really well. They
have two important players, Cazorla and Podolski, who are very good and
Johan Djourou maybe. He didn't score but he is a good player.

'We should pay attention because their counter-attack will be very strong.'

Samir Nasri will miss out with a hamstring injury for City, who could recall both Mario Balotelli and Sergio Aguero.

Roman Abramovich demanded answers from players and coaching staff at Chelsea’s training ground on Thursday after they blew a two-goal lead against Juventus.

Abramovich, who watched the Champions League clash with the Serie A winners from his box at Stamford Bridge, arrived unannounced at Cobham in the morning.

He spoke with players, coaches and manager Roberto Di Matteo on the training field to ask why the European champions could not hold on to a lead against the Italians on Wednesday after Oscar had scored twice in the first half.

The fallout from the match continued when the club called in police to investigate racist abuse of midfielder John Mikel Obi on Twitter after the match.

Chelsea said in a statement: ‘We’ve been made aware of racist tweets targeted at Mikel which are totally unacceptable, disgusting and abhorrent. We’ve informed the police and support taking the strongest possible action.’

New-boy Oscar appeared to have put Chelsea on course for three points against Juventus with two stunning strikes. Juve secured a draw with goals from Arturo Vidal and Fabio Quagliarella.

Mikel, who gave the ball away in the build-up to Juve’s leveller, closed his Twitter account in response to the racism storm.

His situation adds to a series of off-field distractions for Chelsea, who started the season with the chance to win silverware in seven competitions. They have already seen two trophies slip away.

Chelsea were beaten by Manchester City in the Community Shield and were torn apart by Falcao and Atletico Madrid in the European Super Cup in Monaco.

Chelsea owner Abramovich arrived on Thursday with director Eugene Tenenbaum and a third, unidentified, executive to discuss the performance.

Di Matteo, who led Chelsea to European Cup and FA Cup glory last season, is under no immediate threat and Juventus are unbeaten in Serie A for more than a season, but Abramovich expected Chelsea to protect their two-goal lead.

Abramovich has barely been seen at the training ground since he fired Andre Villas-Boas in March but is known for piling the pressure on struggling managers.

Chelsea are top of the Barclays Premier League table, but there is a feeling at the club that they are yet to settle into a rhythm.
