Jose Mourinho has claimed this week's Champions League showdown between Real Madrid and Manchester United is the 'match the world is waiting for'.

United head to the Bernabeu for the first leg on Wednesday, before the tie is decided at Old Trafford three weeks later.

The only certainty will be one of the heavyweights getting knocked out at the end, with Cristiano Ronaldo pitted against his old club in a mouthwatering duel.

Returning idol: Cristiano Ronaldo will play at Old Trafford for the first time since his 2009 departure

'It is the match the world is waiting for,' Mourinho told MUTV.

'People think we are under pressure because a big team will be out.

'But it is the kind of match we want and the people are not waiting for any other game.

'I hope we give them what they want.'

After Ronaldo bagged yet another hat-trick in Real's win over Seville last night, Mourinho flew into Manchester today to watch United overcome Everton at Old Trafford.

And, despite the impending battle, Mourinho was welcomed into Sir Alex Ferguson's inner sanctum prior to the 2-0 win, a sign of just how much affection the pair hold for each other.

'I feel privileged about that because he is such an important person in the world of football and, more importantly, he is good person,' said Mourinho.

'I have always had a fantastic relationship with him and I am proud of it.

'We have had so many matches between us which started with Porto. We had some with Chelsea, Inter and now Real. Some I had won, some I have lost, others I have drawn.

Celtic reaching Champions League last 16 is on par with 2003 UEFA Cup final, says Johan Mjallby

The spirit of Seville: Mjallby proud of Celtic stars for matching the class of 2003

UPDATED:

Johan Mjallby placed the achievement of qualifying for the last 16 of the Champions League on a par with reaching the UEFA Cup Final in 2003.

Celtic will discover which one of the seven sides they will face in next year’s knockout stages when the draw is made in Nyon at 10.30.

The German trio of Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and Schalke are joined by Manchester United, Paris St Germain, Malaga and Juventus as the Scottish champions’ potential opponents.

Mjallby and Neil Lennon were pillars of Martin O’Neill’s side which tried, but failed, to make it out of the group stage, yet which managed to go all the way to Seville.

And the Swede feels that in successfully hurdling two qualifiers before eliminating Benfica and Spartak Moscow and beating Barcelona, the class of 2012-13 can take pride of place alongside the team of 10 years ago.

Asked if this year’s campaign was already as good as that of 2003, the Celtic assistant manager said: ‘Yes, it is for me personally. Seville, that was the biggest disappointment as well, because if you are in a final there’s only two teams left.

‘But it was maybe the biggest achievement in a way, as we beat a lot of good teams on the way.

‘When I came back here three years ago, obviously I wasn’t too sure that I would be sitting here with a chance to play the last 16 of the Champions League.

‘It’s been great having that chance and I think we have improved a lot of the players as well; that’s a part of management and what you want to do.

‘It’s something we are really happy with.

‘We are so proud of the players and it is one of the greatest achievements that I have been involved in to make it to the last 16.

‘You are usually only happy when you win things, win titles — but the Champions League is the Champions League.

‘Usually, money talks, and that is why we are really happy. The team I played in had better financial resources than this team.’

Celtic’s run this season has made players like Gary Hooper and Victor Wanyama household names around the continent. And Mjallby feels that watching such players develop and thrive under the most intense scrutiny football has to offer has been every bit as satisfying as the results.

‘We didn’t know when we started this adventure if we were good enough to play without the ball,’ he added.

‘It’s always going to be different playing in Europe; a lot of teams are very good at keeping the ball and we have to give up a lot of possession to other teams. When you’re not used to it, you don’t know.

‘Yes, we played in the Europa League last season but the Champions League is a step up — and these teams are even better.

‘We didn’t really know if we had the capabilities to defend as a team without the ball for long spells, but I think we have taken a lot of confidence from it — and we have shown that we can do it.

‘You have to remember that we have scored quite a few goals as well and, apart from the Benfica game, we have looked quite dangerous on the counter-attack.

‘It’s great that we can maybe change the style of play now and again and, if you have that in your back pocket, it will stand you in good stead.’

Celtic will be at home first on either February 12, 13, 19 or 20 before playing the second leg away from home on March 5, 6, 12 or 13 and Mjallby admits there are some sides he would relish playing more than others.

‘The ones I would rather not get are Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United — you have to remember they’re top of the Barclays Premier League, one of the hardest leagues in the world,’ he added.

‘You can say maybe from the glamour point of view it would be a nice to get Manchester United, but you have to remember they are a great team who always play in the Champions League and do well. So that would be very hard.

‘PSG would be hard, too. They have spent so much money. And Juventus.

‘Probably Schalke and Malaga are the two, on paper, who might seem the best to get.

‘But the good thing for us is that, whoever we get, we are not going to be the favourites. The pressure will be more on the other team.

‘I think it is easy now and then to be the underdog. Usually when we play domestically in Scotland we won’t be underdogs, so it’s a bit different.

‘I think our support accepts that we might not have the ball all the time, but we have taken a lot of confidence.’

Lionel Messi has surpassed Gerd Muller's record of 85 goals for club and country in a calendar year after scoring twice in the opening 25 minutes for Barcelona against Real Betis.

The Argentinian, who started the match on 84 goals, required just 15 minutes to break the deadlock and equal the record.

Collecting the ball on the inside right channel, he drove diagonally into the penalty area, beating three defenders before picking out the bottom corner.

His 86th arrived ten minutes later in a move he started and finished before firing the ball into the same corner.

Messi has also become Barcelona's all-time leading goalscorer in La Liga, with his tally now standing on 192, two ahead of Cesar Rodriguez.

Messi has been in hot pursuit of Muller's record, set in 1972 when he scored 85 goals for Bayern Munich and West Germany in all competitions.

But he was able to train with his
teammates on Saturday after making a swift recovery and coach Tito
Vilanova passed him fit to make the journey to Seville.

Barcelona can establish a six-point lead at the top of La Liga if they beat fifth-place Betis.

Yaya Toure says Manchester City are well prepared to face Real Madrid

We won't make the same mistakes as last year, says Toure as City prepare for Real test

Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure says the club’s backroom staff have been so thorough in their preparations that he does not need to tap up his Spanish contacts for the lowdown on Real Madrid.

The Premier League champions travel to Bernabeu on Tuesday desperate to put in a better performance in the tournament than they did last season when they failed to get out of their group.

Toure was a European winner with Real’s rivals Barcelona in 2009 and is desperate to follow suit with City.

And he says they are looking to pour more misery on Jose Mourinho and his Real side who have one win in four after Saturday’s loss at Seville heightened their early season gloom.

Toure said: ‘I maintain contact with some ex-companions at Barca but I do not need their advice over Real.

‘The City staff have prepared for this match in great detail and that’s enough information for us.

‘Our last campaign was a disaster and we want to change all that.

‘To win in the Bernabeu is a unique experience, enough to put you on the front pages. We shall put in our maximum to achieve that.

‘So we shall be concentrating hard from the very first second.

‘For me, the key to the result means winning the midfield battles with Xabi Alonso, Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira. This is the key for the match.’

Cristiano Ronaldo will not leave Real Madrid – Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho has told Manchester City to forget about signing Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese forward claimed he was 'sad' after the 3-0 win over Granada a fortnight ago and has been linked with a move to the Premier League champions.

But his boss has ruled out selling Ronaldo, who has scored 150 goals in 149 games.

And Mourinho warned Ronaldo he must be at his best.

'If he plays awful and tired I will take him off in the 75th minute like anyone else.

'Finally after 15 days of talking about Ronaldo it is time to see if he plays well or not. Ronaldo now needs peace, quiet and to play football which is what he does the best and likes the best.'

Swansea City expect to wrap up a 2million deal for Rayo Vallecano midfielder Michu on Friday.

The 26-year-old, who scored 15 goals
in La Liga last season, completed a medical in south Wales on Thursday
and has agreed personal terms on a three-year deal at the Liberty
Stadium.

Michu is the third new signing of
Michael Laudrup's reign, following the arrival of midfielder Jonathan de
Guzman on loan from Villarreal and the 2million signing of Chico from Genoa,
and his arrival is seen as something of a coup at Swansea.

His form last season – he was the
highest scoring midfielder in the Spanish top flight – drew interest
from Manchester United, Liverpool and Seville.

But Rayo Vallecano's dire financial
state has forced them to sell the Spaniard for well below the 3.14m
release clause in his contract.

Celtic want Jefferson Montero

Celtic eye Montero but face fight to sign 2m-rated Villarreal winger

Celtic are weighing up an 11th-hour swoop for Villarreal winger Jefferson Montero.

The Parkhead club have so far been rebuffed in their attempts to land the Ecuador-born winger from the recently relegated La Liga club.

Mexican side Monarcas Morelia are believed to have agreed to pay the 2million the Spanish are demanding and, unless Celtic quickly revive their interest, the left-sided player will undergo a medical before putting pen to paper in the next 48 hours.

However, sources close to the player insisted his preferred option is to remain in Europe — with Neil Lennon’s side. And if Celtic now agree to meet the fee demanded, a deal could yet be struck.

Montero made his name in Ecuador with Independiente Jose Teran and secured a move to Mexican side Dorados before Villarreal offered him a five-year contract in 2009.

After a year scrapping in the lower leagues with the Villarreal B side, Montero spent the second half of 2010-11 on loan at Levante before moving to Real Betis.

A regular starter for newly-promoted Seville, Montero helped them stay afloat in the same season his parent club were heading in the other direction.

Villarreal’s demotion means they are happy to listen to offers for fringe players and Celtic must now decide how far they are prepared to go to land Montero.

Meanwhile, the club rejected a 6m offer for Ki Sung Yueng from Rubin Kazan over the weekend. Were the Russians to up their bid to 8m however, it is likely Celtic would do business for a player who is also reportedly interesting Queens Park Rangers.

Celtic are expected to hear on Monday whether goalkeeper Fraser Forster has accepted their contract offer.

A flooded course led to the Reale Seguros Spanish Open being suspended in Seville before overnight leader Gregory Bourdy had teed off for his third round.

Play was possible earlier on, but only 12 of the 68 players completed their day's work before the hold-up came at lunchtime.

Frenchman Bourdy, with only one top 10 finish in the past year, led on five under par by one from England's Simon Dyson and Robert Rock, 19-year-old Italian Matteo Manassero and home hope Jorge Campillo, a graduate from last season's Challenge Tour.

The best early move came from
Ireland's Peter Lawrie, whose only victory in nearly 300 Tour events
came on the course four years ago.

He
birdied the first and third to climb into a share of 10th spot on two
under, but had completed only one more hole when officials decided to
bring the players in.

Tiger Woods was in danger of missing the cut at the Wells Fargo Championship on Friday night, but Rory McIlroy’s hopes of winning back the world No 1 spot remained very much alive.

Woods shot a one-over 73, leaving him level for the tournament in Charlotte, North Carolina. The cut looked like coming at one under when Woods finished, raising the prospect of an early exit.

The same could not be said for McIlroy. Chasing a top-seven finish to dethrone Luke Donald at the top of the rankings, he shaved four shots off par to be six under.

The clubhouse leader was Nick Watney, who carded a 64 to be 12 under, despite dropping a shot on the 13th. Webb Simpson trailed him by one, with Stewart Cink and Ben Crane a further stroke down.

Former world No 1 Lee Westwood shot a level-par 72 to stand one under for the tournament.

Meanwhile, four birdies in the last six holes swept France’s Gregory Bourdy into the lead on the second day of the Spanish Open in Seville.

Joint 37th after an opening 73, Bourdy burst to five under par with a brilliant six-under 66 and took over the lead from American Shaun Micheel, who crashed to a 77.

That left Bourdy one shot ahead of English duo Simon Dyson and Robert Rock.
