Brighton v Newcastle (Saturday 12.30pm – live on ITV1)
Newcastle boss Alan Pardew will be
without Papiss Cisse and Fabricio Coloccini for tomorrow's clash with Brighton after both picked up slight knocks.

Midfielder Cheick Tiote is also unavailable, as the Ivory Coast international left for
the African Nations Cup after Wednesday night's 2-1 Barclays Premier
League defeat by Everton. Potential replacement Gael Bigirimana is
battling a dead leg.

Striker Demba Ba's transfer to
Chelsea has left a vacancy in attack, and while central defender Steven
Taylor (hamstring) and midfielder Yohan Cabaye (groin) are back in
training, they remain unavailable.

Full-back Ryan Taylor
(knee) and midfielders Hatem Ben Arfa (hamstring), Jonas Gutierrez, Dan
Gosling and Haris Vuckic (all knee) are also out.

Brighton may be tempted to start Kazenga Lua Lua for the third consecutive game against his former club.

The winger spent five years at St James' Park before leaving in November 2011 having made 15 appearances.

Will Buckley's deflected strike
helped the Seagulls to a win against Newcastle last season in the FA
Cup, but the winger is likely to be ruled out with a hamstring injury.

Brighton and Newcastle have met four times before in the FA Cup; the Magpies progressed in the first meeting in 1930, but the Seagulls have since won the last three ties including in Round 4 last season.

Brighton have won three of their last five FA Cup games against higher-ranked sides, including that victory over the Magpies last term.

The Seagulls have only lost one of their last 12 FA Cup games on home soil, and have not been eliminated from the competition at home since 2008.

Newcastle have not won an away game in the FA Cup since January 2006, when they won 2-0 at fourth tier Cheltenham Town.

Newcastle squad: Krul, Elliot, Harper, Santon, Ferguson, Tavernier, Williamson, Perch, Streete, Bigirimana, Anita, Marveaux, Sammy Ameobi, Obertan, Abeid, Shola Ameobi, Ranger.

Aldershot v Rotherham (Saturday, 3pm)
Aldershot Town have met Rotherham once before in the FA Cup since their reformation in 1992, winning 3-0 away from home in a replay after a 1-1 draw in Round 1 of the 2009 competition.

Rotherham have not made the fourth round of the FA Cup since 2002, when they eliminated top-flight Southampton at this stage before losing to Crewe.

This is Aldershot’s first appearance in Round 3 since 2007; the Shots have not made the fourth round since 1987, when they lost to Barnsley.

Aldershot have won their last three home games in this competition, and have only lost one of their last eight.

Aston Villa v Ipswich (Saturday, 3pm)
Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert is
hoping to have a trio of players – including Darren Bent – back in
contention for tomorrow's FA Cup third-round clash with Ipswich.

Bent (hamstring), fellow striker Gabriel Agbonlahor (thigh) and winger
Charles N'Zogbia (knee) are all poised to return to training today and
will then be assessed by Lambert.

Midfielder Ashley Westwood has been ruled out after suffering an ankle
injury during the 2-2 draw at Swansea. Defenders Ron Vlaar (calf),
Nathan Baker (hamstring) and Richard Dunne (knee) remain sidelined.

Mick McCarthy has just 16 players
with significant Championship experience to call upon tomorrow when his
side travel to Villa.

The likes of Stephen Henderson,
Bradley Orr (ineligible due to loans), Tyrone Mings (cup-tied) and Andy
Drury (illness) are unavailable, while Danny Higginbotham and DJ
Campbell have seen their loan deals expire.

In addition, McCarthy wants to rest a
number of his players who have featured during a spell of
four games in 11 over the Christmas period.

Patrick Kisnorbo is available for the Tractor Boys though, with the defender having completed his one-month loan deal from Leeds on Thursday.

Villa and Ipswich have met four times
before in the FA Cup, winning two ties apiece with the Villans winning
the last clash back in 1996.

Aston Villa have won their last five FA Cup games at Villa Park, scoring exactly three times in each one.

The Midlands side have progressed through each of their last nine ties against lower ranked sides, with Sheffield United the last to eliminated them back in 2005.

Ipswich have lost their last 10 FA Cup games against teams from a higher division, and have only won one of their last 25 (23 ties).

Aston Villa squad: Guzan, Given, Lowton, Herd, Clark, Lichaj, Stevens,
Bennett, Ireland, N'Zogbia, Bannan, Delph, Albrighton, Holman, Benteke,
Bent, Agbonlahor, Bowery, Weimann, Burke, Johnson, Williams, Carruthers.

Barnsley v Burnley (Saturday, 3pm)
This will be the first FA Cup meeting between Barnsley and Burnley since 1911, when the Clarets won a Round 2 match 2-0 on home soil.

Barnsley have lost their last four FA Cup round 3 games and haven’t picked up a victory since their run to the semi-finals back in 2008.

Burnley have only won one of their last 11 away FA Cup games, conceding nine in total in their last two.

The Clarets have only mustered one clean sheet in their last 15 outings in the FA Cup (conceding 30 in total).

Macclesfield v Cardiff (Saturday, 3pm)
This will be the first meeting between these sides in the FA Cup, though their most recent meeting came in the League Cup in 2005, when the Welsh side prevailed 2-1.

Cardiff have won 11 and drawn three of their last of their last 14 FA Cup games against lower ranked sides, and have not lost against a team from a lower league since 1995, when they eliminated by Enfield.

After three away wins on the way to the final in 2008, Cardiff have failed to win any of their ensuing five on the road in the FA Cup, drawing two and losing three.

The Silkmen have only lost one of their last 11 on home soil in the FA Cup proper, and that was against Everton in 2009.

Blackburn v Bristol City (Saturday, 3pm)
This will only be the second FA Cup meeting between Blackburn and Bristol City; the Robins won the first back at this stage of the 1951 competition (2-1).

Rovers have won 12 and lost just one of their last 16 FA Cup games at Ewood Park, scoring at least once in each of their last 14.

The Robins have only made it past the third round once in the last 10 years, reaching Round 4 back in 2007.

City have only scored one goal in their last six FA Cup games combined.

Bolton v Sunderland (Saturday, 3pm)
Bolton have won just one of their six previous FA Cup ties against Sunderland, with that win coming at this stage of the 1980 competition.

Interestingly, five of the previous six FA Cup ties between the Trotters and the Black Cats have come in Round 3, with Sunderland winning the last 2-1 in 2009.

This will be Bolton’s first FA Cup game against a team from a higher division since the 2000 Final against Aston Villa, where they lost on penalties after a 0-0 draw.

The Black Cats are unbeaten in three FA Cup away games after a run of five consecutive defeats on the road between 2005 and 2010.

Charlton v Huddersfield (Saturday, 3pm)
Charlton defender Leon Cort (hamstring) and full-back Lawrie Wilson (broken nose) are major doubts for the clash against Huddersfield.

The Addicks are also without loanees Dan Seabourne, Rob Hulse and Emmanuel Frimpong who have returned to their clubs.

Jermaine Beckford is available again for Huddersfield after the striker was ineligible for the 6-1 loss at parent club Leicester.

Beckford has scored six goals in his last four FA Cup appearances.

Winger Adam Hammill has not been given permission to play by his club Wolves, but James Vaughan is available.

Charlton and Huddersfield have an equal head-to-head record in the FA Cup; Huddersfield eliminated Charlton from the 1926 competition before the Addicks got revenge in 1958 after a replay.

The Addicks have only lost one of their last 12 FA Cup games at the Valley, winning seven and drawing four.

Huddersfield have scored exactly once in 14 of their last 19 FA Cup away games, though they have netted more than once on only one occasion in this run.

The Terriers are without a win in 10 games in all competitions, drawing five and losing five.

Crawley v Reading (Saturday, 3pm)
Reading manager Brian McDermott has
indicated that new signing Daniel Carrico is unlikely to make his debut
in tomorrow's FA Cup tie against Crawley.

Jason Roberts has returned to training after recovering from a hip problem while Nicky Shorey has overcome a virus.

McDermott is likely to make several changes after playing three Barclays Premier League matches in a week.

divisions. However, they were eliminated in the third round last season
by third-tier Stevenage.

The Red Devils have won four and lost just one of their last six home games in the FA Cup.

Reading squad:
Federici, Taylor, Gunter, Cummings, Gorkss, Pearce, Morrison, Mariappa,
Shorey, Harte, McAnuff, Tabb, Karacan, Kebe, McCleary, Robson-Kanu, Le
Fondre, Hunt, Roberts, Pogrebnyak.

Crystal Palace v Stoke (Saturday, 3pm)
Stoke boss Tony Pulis will make changes
for tomorrow's FA Cup third-round clash with Crystal Palace, which could
include a first start in the club's colours for Michael Owen.

The former England striker has made four
substitute appearances since joining the Potters in September, the last
coming in October before he suffered a hamstring injury.

Midfielder Steven Nzonzi is available
after the red card he received in last weekend's 3-3 draw with
Southampton was rescinded while full-back Marc Wilson could return in a
fortnight from a broken leg.

False start: Michael Owen's Stoke career has been ravaged by injury

The one previous FA Cup clash between the Eagles and the Potters saw Stoke claim a 1-0 home win in Round 3 in 1989.

Crystal Palace have won just one of their last six FA Cup games, including suffering defeat in each of the last three.

After progressing beyond the third round just once from 1995-2005, Stoke City have gone beyond this stage five times in the last seven years.

name a strong Fulham line-up in tomorrow's FA Cup third-round tie with
Blackpool, but will have to do without several key players.

Mladen Petric, Damien Duff and Mahamadou Diarra are still injured so will be unable to feature for the west Londoners.

Mark Schwarzer is also sidelined due to a neck problem, while Stephen Kelly (knee) and John Arne Riise (shin) are also missing.

Leeds United v Birmingham (Saturday, 3pm)
This will be the fifth FA Cup meeting between Leeds and Birmingham; Leeds have won three of the previous four, including the 1972 semi-final, but did lose the last clash (0-3 in 2005).

Birmingham have already won at Elland Road this season in the league. Leroy Lita scored the only game of the game back in October.

Birmingham have lost five and won just one of their last six FA Cup clashes with sides in the same division.

Since beating Manchester United 1-0 at this stage of the competition in 2010, Leeds have won none of their FA Cup games (D2 L3).

Leicester v Burton Albion (Saturday, 3pm)
Both previous clashes (all competitions) between these midlands rivals have been won by the away team, with the Foxes winning the one FA Cup clash 1-0 in 1985.

striker Sergio Aguero (hamstring) will miss this weekend's FA Cup
third-round tie against Watford but controversial forward Mario Balotelli is available after recovering from a virus.

Manager Roberto Mancini, who has been pictured grappling with Balotelli
in a training-ground bust-up, has said the 22-year-old could be on the
bench but forward Samir Nasri is suspended and Yaya Toure, Kolo Toure
and Abdul Razak are on international duty.

Defenders Aleksandar Kolarov and Maicon (both knee) are not yet ready to
return while right-back Micah Richards (knee) and midfielder Jack
Rodwell (hamstring) are longer-term casualties.

Otherwise, Ray has no other fitness concerns heading into the game.

Hastings United are making their third appearance in the FA Cup third round but are yet to make it to the next stage; they lost 0-3 to Norwich in a replay in 1954 and 1-2 against Sheffield Wednesday in 1955.

Hastings have never kept a clean sheet against a league side in the FA Cup.

Middlesbrough have not lost to non-league opposition in the FA Cup since February 1912 when they were beaten by West Ham United. In that time, they have won 12 matches and drawn six.

Boro have won three and lost three of their last six home games in the FA Cup.

Millwall v Preston (Saturday, 3pm)

make his first start of the season and goalkeeper Brad Friedel could
play as manager Andre Villas-Boas looks to rotate his squad following a
tiring festive period.

Winger Gareth Bale is available
following his one-match suspension but defender William Gallas (calf) is
unlikely to feature and Younes Kaboul is out until mid-to-late February

little to worry about on the injury front ahead of their trip to Wigan.

dilemma for boss Eddie Howe is which goalkeeper he will select.

Dagenham and Carlisle in the earlier rounds, but has played second
fiddle to the Cherries' current number one David James in the League.

The one previous FA Cup game between Wigan and Bournemouth was at this stage of the 1986 competition and ended 3-0 to the Latics.

Bournemouth have qualified for the fourth round on three of the last four occasions that they have reached this stage of the competition. However, this is their first appearance in the Third Round since 2005.

Swansea v Arsenal (Sunday, 1.30pm – live on ESPN)
Arsenal reported no fresh injury problems ahead of Sunday's FA Cup third-round tie at Swansea.

Reserve goalkeeper Vito Mannone has been struggling with a virus, as has midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong, back from his loan spell at Charlton.

Midfielder Abou Diaby (thigh) and defender Andre Santos (stomach muscle) are back in training, but not yet match fit.

This will be the fourth FA Cup tie between Swansea and Arsenal, but the first since 1968.

Swansea won the first meeting between the sides in 1926 but have since lost the last two.

The Jacks have won their last two Premier League matches against Arsenal, 2-0 at the Emirates in December and 3-2 at the Liberty Stadium last January.

In 19 previous FA Cup ties with teams from the same division, Swansea have progressed just four times and on neither occasion in the last three years.

Arsenal haven’t failed to make the Fourth Round of the FA Cup since 1996.

Arsenal Squad: Szczesny, Gibbs,
Vermaelen, Mertesacker, Sagna, Podolski, Cazorla, Wilshere,
Oxlade-Chamberlain, Arteta, Walcott, Mannone, Giroud, Ramsey, Gervinho,
Koscielny, Rosicky, Coquelin, Martinez, Arshavin, Jenkinson.

Mansfield v Liverpool (Sunday, 4pm – live on ESPN)
This is only the second time Liverpool and Mansfield have been drawn together in any competition; Liverpool eliminated Mansfield from the 1970/71 League Cup in the other.

Liverpool last faced non-league opposition in this tournament in 2008, when the Reds were forced to come from behind twice in a 5-2 defeat of Havant & Waterlooville.

The Stags have lost just one game in their last 12 in all competitions, winning five and drawing six.

In Daniel Sturridge’s last seven starts in the FA Cup for Chelsea, the forward bagged himself seven goals.

Cheltenham v Everton
(Monday, 7.45pm – live on ESPN)
Everton manager David Moyes will try to
freshen up his side for Monday's FA Cup third-round tie at npower League
Two club Cheltenham.

Left-back Leighton Baines could be in line for a rest as Bryan Oviedo
may be given a run out while midfielders Thomas Hitzlsperger and Ross
Barkley may come into contention for a start.

Forward Kevin Mirallas and defender Seamus Coleman (both hamstring) are
still sidelined, as are Tony Hibbert (calf) and Darron Gibson (thigh).

This will be the first ever competitive meeting between Cheltenham and Everton.

Everton have won three and lost none of their last five FA Cup games on the road.

Cheltenham have progressed just once in their last eight draws against teams from higher divisions; and never against a top flight side (from three ties).

Only once since 1912 have Everton been eliminated by a team from the fourth tier or below. It was by Shrewsbury in 2003 at this stage of the competition.

Everton squad: Howard, Jagielka, Distin, Heitinga, Baines, Oviedo, Naismith, Hitzlsperger, Osman, Pienaar, Fellaini, Jelavic, Mucha, Duffy, Barkley, Neville, Anichebe, Vellios, Francisco.

Brighton 1 Watford 3: Vydra brace sinks Seagulls on south coast

|

UPDATED:

21:57 GMT, 29 December 2012

Matej Vydra scored twice as Watford cemented their place in the npower Championship play-off places with an impressive win at Brighton.

The Czech striker took his tally for the season to 12 goals with two in the space of two second-half minutes to shoot down the Seagulls.

Brighton boss Gus Poyet was going head-to-head with his old Chelsea team-mate, Watford chief Gianfranco Zola, but a dour first half in the pouring rain left both sets of fans feeling the Blues.

However, the game came to life after
the break when Troy Deeney grabbed his 50th career goal and David Lopez
equalised for Brighton with a penalty before Vydra had the final word.

Watford could have gone ahead at the beginning and the end of that scrappy opening period.

Daniel Pudil gave Wayne Bridge the slip from Almen Abdi's early corner but put a free header over the crossbar.

And in stoppage time Albi's deep cross was met by Deeney but, once again, the striker could not get his header on target.

In between time, Vydra was denied by
Brighton goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak while, for Brighton, Kazenga LuaLua
stung Manuel Almunia's palms with a fierce, angled drive and Andrew
Crofts blazed over.

Mercifully, the second half was a far more entertaining affair with Watford breaking the deadlock after nine minutes.

Pudil's diagonal ball played in
Deeney, who had peeled off his marker Adam El-Abd, and his low shot was
powerful enough to fizz through Kuszczak's legs via his heel and into
the back of the net.

At it again: Vydra also scored twice when Watford beat Nottingham Forest before Christmas

But out of almost nothing Brighton managed to hit back 10 minutes later.

LuaLua had been forced away from goal
and towards the corner of the penalty area by Almunia, but Tommie Hoban
saw fit to barge the winger over and referee Oliver Langford pointed to
the spot.

Spaniard Lopez stepped up to score his second penalty in as many matches.

But Brighton were level for barely two minutes before Watford got a big slice of fortune.

Vydra was allowed to run unchecked
towards the Brighton area but his shot took a huge deflection of El-Abd
to loop over Kuszczak and into the net.

However, there was nothing lucky
about Watford's third goal a minute later as Deeney, inside his own
half, lifted the ball into the path of Vydra who outstripped the
Brighton defence before coolly beating Kuszczak.

Brighton 2 Millwall 2: Wood at the double before Lions tamed by late penalty

|

UPDATED:

22:32 GMT, 18 December 2012

Millwall striker Chris Wood showed exactly why Gus Poyet wants to sign him in January with a superb double but Brighton hit back to snatch a late point from the penalty spot.

The hosts were trailing by two goals midway through the second half, but substitute Kazenga LuaLua halved the deficit and David Lopez dragged them level with three minutes remaining.

New Zealand striker Wood is expected to leave parent club West Brom in the new year and Seagulls boss Poyet admits he is interested in bringing him back to to south coast, where he had a successful spell on loan a couple of seasons ago.

But Lions manager Kenny Jackett is ready to splash 1million to make Wood's current loan deal a permanent switch to south London.

And the 21-year-old illustrated why he has become such hot property with an instinctive first-half finish and a cracker after the break.

The visitors had been dealt a blow before kick-off when Wood's strike partner Andy Keogh broke his toe in the warm-up.

Liam Trotter was pushed further up front as Jackett reshuffled his line-up, and the midfielder could have opened the scoring in the first minute with a free header but his effort went straight at Tomasz Kuszczak.

Will Buckley headed a corner from Lopez wide in Brighton's first attack, but it was Millwall who struck first in the 26th minute.

Shane Lowry crossed from the left and Wood darted in at the near post to get the slightest touch and divert the ball into Kuszczak's net.

Brighton almost hit straight back from a Lopez free-kick but skipper Gordon Greer's looping header came back off the crossbar.

However, Poyet had seen enough and
made a change with seven minutes of the first half still to go, hauling
off defender Lewis Dunk in favour of winger LuaLua.

Brighton improved after the interval
and they were denied by the woodwork again in the 54th minute when a
free-kick from Lopez crashed against the post.

But barely a minute later Wood doubled Millwall's advantage in stunning style, cutting across the penalty area and curling in a superb shot past Kuszczak and into the top corner.

Yet Brighton pulled one back in the 61st minute when LuaLua turned inside and thumped a fierce drive through a crowd of players and past Lions keeper David Forde.

The Seagulls thought they had levelled when Adam El-Abd prodded the ball goalwards from a yard out but Lowry somehow hacked the ball off the goal-line.

However, they did grab a point with two minutes to go after Craig Mackail-Smith was felled by Mark Beevers and Lopez stepped up to tuck in a dramatic leveller.

Chris Powell’s side moved down into 12th place in the Championship as Brighton held them to a draw in the Valley.

The Seagulls dominated possession but failed to convert chances into goals, allowing Charlton to extend their unbeaten run to seven games.

Both sets of fans joined in a minute's applause at 3.07pm to commemorate the moment Colin Walsh hit the net 20 years ago this week, Charlton's first goal since they returned to their Valley ground after a seven-year absence.

Charlton went 1-0 up within ten minutes, with Lawrie Wilson driving the ball past Tomasz Kuszczak into the bottom right corner.

Craig Mackail-Smith hit back for
Brighton in the 28th minute, firing it into the net from inside the box
after Michael Morrison fluffed a clearance.

Dean Hammond slipped in Buckley to cut the ball back for the former Swansea striker, who slid in to meet the ball but lifted it over the top.

Will Hoskins then teed up Buckley for another crack at goal but his shot was also too high, before Mackail-Smith had an effort deflected wide.

Bradley Pritchard took Charlton ahead
again against the run of play.

Johnnie
Jackson's low cross ricocheted through the Brighton defence and Pritchard was
on hand to sweep the ball into the net for his first league goal.

But once again Brighton equalised, with
Kazenga LuaLua drilling it down the centre of the goal in his first appearance for the club since October.

The goal came only eight minutes after the Brighton man had made his way off the bench.

It was a frustrating effort from Brighton, as chance after chance in front of goal was wasted, leaving Stephen Dobbie kicking the post in anger just before the hour mark.

There were bookings on both sides in
the second half, with Dean Hammond receiving a yellow card for
unsporting behaviour and Lawrie Wilson also booked for an unfair
challenge.

Eric Cantona sardine speech: the truth revealed

REVEALED: The truth behind Cantona's famous trawler speech (and the mystery of the piece of paper it was written on)

|

UPDATED:

13:23 GMT, 27 November 2012

Eric Cantona delivered one of the most famous phrases football has ever known when he uttered the immortal and completely baffling words: 'When seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea.'

Now, over 17 years from the Frenchman's infamous press conference after an appeal hearing at Croydon Magistrates’ Court following his assault on Crystal Palace fan Matthew Simmons, former Manchester United director Maurice Watkins has revealed the inspiration behind Cantona's choice of phrase.

At the time it seemed like a bizarre off-the-cuff remark before former Manchester United forward ended his brief press conference.

Later, it was revealed to be the
Frenchman’s assessment of the media pack following him around on the
hunt for a story. And according to Watkins – who was sat next to Cantona
during the press conference – the Frenchman knew what he was going to
say all along.

Maverick: Cantona took the Premier League by storm

Maverick: Cantona took the Premier League by storm

'The
whole case had been so big I felt Eric had to say something,' said
Watkins, at the time a United director and their legal advisor.

'We started to draft a speech on a piece of paper and he asked what the boat was that catches fish. Then he asked what the birds were that fly over the sea.

'Eric went on writing then showed me what he wanted to say.

'Everyone thinks because of the expression on my face that I didn’t know what he was going to say.

But I did and I often wonder what happened to that piece of paper.'

Cantona’s words brought some kind of closure to one of the most infamous chapters in football history.

Sent off for a challenge on Palace defender Richard Shaw in January 1995, Cantona was making his way to the dressing rooms in the corner of Selhurst Park when he heard Simmons shout at him.

Cantona launched himself at the supporter with a kung-fu kick, before following up with a couple of well-aimed punches.

'I was having a cup of tea in the directors’ room before being called to the dressing room because police were contemplating some sort of action,' said Watkins.

'From then it became clear what a significant event it was. Legally, I will probably never have a case like that again.'

Almost immediately, United banned
Cantona for the remainder of the season – a total of 21 matches – which
the Football Association increased to eight months.

Watkins, and Sir Alex Ferguson, remain of the view that the additional punishment was unfair and borne out of the FA’s need to look as though they were actually doing something.

Yet the loss of Cantona’s liberty was almost worse.

'We made an immediate mistake on the day of the case because we decided to walk to the court with a police escort,' said Watkins.

'It was only 100 yards but there were so many press people about it was very difficult to move. I was nearly knocked down on more than one occasion.

'We thought it was going rather well until the magistrate sentenced Eric to two weeks in prison.

'We lodged an immediate appeal and bail application but Eric was pretty upset when he was whipped down to the cells.'

There then followed an almost comic three-and-a-half hours during which a bail application to the same bench was turned down, forcing Watkins and his legal team to dash up the road to the nearby crown court to make a further attempt to get Cantona released.

'It was a mad three hours,' said Watkins.

'I did manage to see Eric for a little while but there was not much time to do anything.

'The thing was, whilst you go prepared for anything we were surprised at the sentence because it went against all the established protocols.'

Wolves 3 Brighton 3: Johnson rescues home side late in the day after Henry sees red

Roger Johnson scored a dramatic late equaliser for Wolves to deny Brighton in a six-goal thriller which saw the hosts play with 10 men for the entire second half.

Bakary Sako opened the scoring for Stale Solbakken's men when he fired the ball past Tomasz Kuszczak after some superb build-up play.

Craig Mackail-Smith pulled Brighton level on 43 minutes, before Karl Henry was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Liam Bridcutt on the stroke of half-time.

Wolves were back in front against the
run of play on 61 minutes with a 25-yard strike from substitute Tongo
Doumbia, but a 12-yard drive from Will Buckley levelled things again.

Brighton took the lead for the first
time with a Stephen Dobbie penalty in the 89th minute, but Johnson had
the final say when he headed the ball in from a Sako free-kick just a
minute later.

The Seagulls enjoyed lengthy spells
of possession in the opening 15 minutes, but Wolves fought their way
back into the match and, after 22 minutes, it was the hosts who opened
the scoring. Sako received the ball from Kevin Doyle at the end of a
superb passing move and slotted it past Kuszczak from 12 yards.

After withstanding considerable pressure from the home side, Mackail-Smith pulled the Seagulls level in the 43rd minute.

The frontman received the ball from
Bruno Saltor in the penalty area, before firing into the top-left corner
of the net from 12 yards.

The goal prompted Solbakken to punch a
hole in the roof of the home dugout, but he probably should have saved
his outburst for a couple of minutes later as things were about to get
much worse for the Wolves boss – Henry receiving a straight red card for
a poor challenge on Liam Bridcutt.

Brighton started the second half
brightly as they tried to make their one-man advantage count, and twice
went close with efforts from David Lopez and Dobbie.

The latter continued to challenge Carl Ikeme in the Wolves goal as the half continued, but was unable sneak an effort past him.

Ten-man Wolves then regained the lead
against the run of play in the 61st minute – substitute Doumbia making
the most of an advantage played by referee Scott Mathieson to fire in a
superb 25-yard effort.

Brighton pushed to pull themselves level again and, on 72 minutes, they succeeded with a low 12-yard drive from Buckley.

However, there was more drama to
follow when Christophe Berra was controversially judged to have handled
the ball in the penalty area on 89 minutes, giving Dobbie the
opportunity to fire the ball past Ikeme from the penalty spot.

Johnson then rose superbly to meet a
Sako free-kick and head the ball into the back of the Brighton net to
earn his side a hard-fought point and score his first goal for Wolves.

Leicester 1 Brighton 0: King takes lead but Schmeichel saves perfect home record

|

UPDATED:

21:39 GMT, 23 October 2012

It took a stunning penalty save from Kasper Schmeichel to protect Nigel Pearson’s unblemished home league record at the King Power Stadium.

The keeper, who has struggled manfully to step out of the shadow of his illustrious father, pulled off a superb stop to deny Ashley Barnes on an evening when the Championship leaders almost proved their own worst enemies.

Leading thanks to Andy King’s tenth-minute goal, Leicester became complacent and allowed Gus Poyet’s Seagulls a route back into a game that should have been put beyond them.

And it seemed that Poyet’s team were
about to stop a run of four matches without victory by becoming the
first team this season to earn a point from a trip to the east Midlands.

But Schmeichel had other ideas,
blocking Barnes’s effort as Leicester looked to build on a top spot
gained after last weekend’s draw against Birmingham at St Andrew’s.

But while the Dane did his job at one
end of the field, it was left to King to separate the sides with a
strike that will have left Poyet fuming.

The midfielder’s effort owed a debt to
forward David Nugent. The former Portsmouth forward has looked a
different player since his goal-drought came to an end last month.

The striker, famously capped once for England by Steve McClaren, turned Liam Bridcutt on the left touchline.

Brighton’s defence stood statically on
the edge of the area. With King at his shoulder, Nugent powered
forward, leaving Bridcutt in his wake.

Eventually, one of Poyet’s defenders sensed there might be some danger and Nugent off-loaded the ball to his team-mate.

The first shot by the Wales
international was blocked. The ball bounced untidily back into the
midfielder’s path and he claimed his third goal of the season, rapping
home from close-range.

Martyn Waghorn blazed over at the near
post and then Anthony Knockaert forced Tomasz Kuszczak into a fine stop
after a well-struck drive from distance.

It was too easy for the Foxes and they
lost urgency, allowing Brighton back into the game. They should have
heeded the undoubted warning from boss Nigel Pearson at the interval.

But Zak Whitbread was guilty of a rash
decision in the 52nd minute when he ploughed into Will Buckley as the
Brighton man attempted to reach the byeline.

Ashley Barnes shouldered the responsibility but Schmeichel was equal to the task, saving to his left.

Right-back Ritchie de Laet bravely
threw himself at the rebound, injuring himself in the process, and was
substituted for his trouble.

Leicester almost grabbed a second goal
after a cross from Lloyd Dyer found substitute Jamie Vardy, but his
headed effort was wide.

The Seagulls kept the pressure up, attackingly strongly in the closing ten minutes.
Striker Craig Mackail-Smith came close in the 87th, but his effort was comfortably saved by Schmeichel.

Barnes then fired off a hopeful shot outside the area, but it was to no avail.

Daryl Murphy fired the lowly Tractor Boys into the lead in the first half, but they were denied a first win in eight games, and some breathing space for under-pressure boss Paul Jewell, when Buckley struck from close range with 10 minutes to go.

Brighton could have gone ahead after just 30 seconds when some neat play from Ashley Barnes and Stephen Dobbie teed up Kazenga LuaLua but the former Newcastle winger scuffed his shot wide.

Barnes then played in Dobbie, still looking for his first goal since joining from Swansea, but his low shot was saved by Scott Loach.

Ipswich were looking dangerous as well, though, and Tomasz Kuszczak kept out a drive from Jay Emmanuel-Thomas before Murphy headed a Carlos Edwards cross wide.

And in the 27th minute it was the visitors who took a shock lead when another deep Edwards deep cross to the far post again found Murphy, who this time stooped to plant his header past Kuszczak.

Brighton almost pulled one back before the interval but Wayne Bridge's shot was deflected narrowly wide.

Yet just after the break Ipswich were agonisingly close to doubling their advantage, again through Murphy.

Michael Chopra's cross fizzed across the Brighton goal and Murphy's shot was kept out by the legs of the diving Kuszczak.

But the Seagulls bossed the majority of the second half and Dobbie's deflected shot looped over, LuaLua was denied by Loach and a smart turn and shot from Barnes flew inches wide.

Boss Gus Poyet threw on Buckley and Gary Dicker just after the hour mark, and the substitution paid dividends 18 minutes later.

They finally drew level after Inigo Calderon's persistence down the right was rewarded when his cross-shot ricocheted to Buckley, who was in the right place to tap the ball in from a yard out.

Ipswich had a chance to go back into the lead moments later when Jason Scotland curled the ball towards goal and although Kuszczak fumbled the shot, Brighton cleared the danger.

Brighton went for the win during five minutes of stoppage time, with Buckley the driving force, but his curling cross was just too far in front of Barnes as the hosts had to settle for a point.
