Nuri Sahin has criticised Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers following his failure to make an impression at Anfield and thanks God he isn't playing for the Northern Irishman any more.

The Turkey midfielder joined Liverpool on a season-long loan from Real Madrid last summer but he made only 12 appearances before the deal was terminated in January.

The 24-year-old claims he was played out of position without explanation by Rodgers and is now glad not to be playing under him.

Sahin, now on loan at Borussia Dortmund, told Spanish newspaper AS: 'Brendan Rodgers wanted me to play as a 10. But I do not play behind the forwards.

'I spoke with him and asked him why I was playing there. It is not my real position. The boss could not answer me… still, I am not sorry about it.

'To play in the red jersey and be in Anfield is something marvellous.

'Maybe if I had not gone there I would not have been able to return to Borussia Dortmund. For that, I am happy.

'But I have left Brendan Rodgers, thanks be to God.'

Sahin made his name at Dortmund before joining Real in 2011.

He said: 'I feel well physically and mentally, everything is perfect. After returning to Germany, I feel much better.'

Mats Hummels headed home a late equaliser to giver Borussia Dortmund the advantage in their last-16 clash with Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine.

Douglas Costa looked to have given the home side a narrow lead with a well-taken goal in the second half before Hummels nodded in Marcel Schmelzer's corner.

Shakhtar took the lead just after the half-hour mark when Darijo Srna whipped home a free kick from 25 yards only for Robert Lewandowski to score a crucial away goal 10 minutes later.

All the latest from the Championship

21min: Finally some sting from the visitors. Moments after Skrtel has another header saved at the back post, Fulham counter.

Ashkan Dejagah breaks into the box but after feeding Alex Kacaniklic, the midfielder sees his eventual shot blocked.

19min: So sluggish are Fulham that Martin Jol is on the edge of his technical area demanding his side close the ball down more. Liverpool remain as comfortable as you can be.

16min: Fulham can barely string two passes together and their problems could get worse as Sascha Riether has been limping around the pitch in the last few minutes.

13min: Excellent strike from Stewart Downing, whose 20-yard rocket is tipped behind at the near post by Mark Schwarzer.

So fine was the touch that the officials missed it and a goal kick is given.

11min: And there has been no response from Fulham who have given the Liverpool defence very little to worry about. This could be a long afternoon for the Cottagers.

8min: GOAL! LIVERPOOL 1-0 Fulham

Fulham survived the first corner but their atrocious marking is soon shown up again.

A Steven Gerrard corner finds Martin Skrtel free inside the box, who lashes home a strike to make up for his own goal in this fixture last May.

6min: Liverpool win a corner following a jinking run from Jose Enrique, but Jonjo Shelvey's cross is headed over by Daniel Agger.

3min: A quiet start with neither side looking particularly threatening on the ball so far. A decent sized crowd at Anfield also seems very quiet.

Kick-off: Away we go.

17.27: The teams are out at Anfield.

17.24: But Liverpool can move into the top half of the table and into eighth with a win today.

Fulham have 11th place to aim for with three points that would take them above the Reds.

17.21: As touched upon, both sides spectacularly crashed last weekend. Liverpool suffered a shock 3-1 home defeat against Aston Villa, while Fulham suffered the ignominy of being the first team to lose against QPR after a 2-0 defeat at Loftus Road.

Back in the side: Suso is recalled for Liverpool

17.18: Liverpool boss, Brendan Rodgers spoke to ESPN before the game:

'We have been making steady progress on and off the field. Last weekend was a big disappointment but we have worked well and will look to take three points in a difficult game.

'Joe Allen has played double the amount at this stage than last season but it's important I use him wisely, like wise with young Raheem. I have terrific players chomping at the bit and here is the opportunity for them to do well.'

17.13: Martin Jol certainly believes Fulham can win today but the Cottagers boss conceded his side may be a little short in midfield, speaking before kick-off.

The Dutchman pointed out that Dimitar Berbatov will be the key player for the west London side going forward.

17.05: Teenage winger Raheem Sterling is on the bench the day after signing a new long-term contract as Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers makes two changes for the visit of Fulham.

Sterling and Joe Allen are both rested, as Rodgers had suggested this week, with Jose Enrique fit again after a hamstring injury and Suso making his first league appearance since being hauled off after 36 minutes against Wigan on November 17.

Fulham make three changes following last weekend's defeat at QPR with former Liverpool reserve Alex Kacaniklic recalled along with Giorgos Karagounis and Ashkan Dejagah.

17.00: I know it looks like a run-of-the-mill mid-table clash to conclude the last Saturday before Christmas but I can assure you it is much more than that.

In Liverpool v Fulham we have two sides that suffered crushing defeats for different reasons last weekend and both will be desperate for a morale boosting win going into the hectic Christmas schedule.

Brendan Rodgers wants Liverpool to beat Udinese

Nothing less than a win will do against Udinese for Liverpool boss Rodgers

|

UPDATED:

22:30 GMT, 5 December 2012

Brendan Rodgers has challenged his players to deliver the victory in Udine that he believes is vital to preserve Liverpool’s European reputation.

Liverpool will be guaranteed a place in the Europa League’s round of 32 if they beat Udinese on Thursday, regardless of what happens in Group A’s other game between Anzhi Makhachkala and SBC Young Boys, and their manager is determined to secure that objective.

Having seen Manchester City tumble out of Europe this week, Rodgers does not want to be in the position of heading into 2013 with Liverpool in a similar predicament. It is why he will pick a strong team here that will be spearheaded by leading striker Luis Suarez.

Most of all, though, Rodgers feels Liverpool need a win to remind a wider audience that their name still carries weight on the continent and he does not want see the club’s status being diminished by an early elimination.

‘This is a club that over the years has had a terrific association with European football,’ Rodgers said. ‘It is important for us in our present and future that we can have as much involvement into the latter stages of these competitions as much as we can because this is what this great history is all about

‘I would be bitterly disappointed if we don’t get through. I have understood where are priorities are but this is a club that is stepped in the tradition of Europe. The Europa League is a great tournament.

‘Everyone wants to be in the Champions League but if you asked the players and supporters back in 2001 when they won it: “did you enjoy it” well, I’m sure they did. The main outcome for us is to qualify.

‘If we can do that, it would be terrific achievement considering everything that went on at the beginning of the season. If we can get through, we can then push on into next year.’

Up against it: A win for Liverpool will clinch qualification regardless of results elsewhere

Club captain Steven Gerrard has missed the trip to Italy through illness, while key midfielder Lucas and influential defender Daniel Agger have been rested but, even though Liverpool face a trip to West Ham on Sunday, squad rotation is not part Rodgers’ thinking.

‘I always pick a team to win because I want to do well in the competition,’ said Rodgers. ‘This has been my first opportunity to work in Europe as a manager. I, along with my staff and players, have enjoyed every minute of it. We all want to qualify.

‘I am not crying that we have got games on a Thursday and a Sunday. I have really enjoyed travelling and seeing our supporters come with us. I think it has been brilliant. It is in our hands and that is all we could want.’

Rodgers, meanwhile, is ready to reward the improvement Brad Jones has shown this season by offering him a new contract.

The Liverpool goalkeeper, who moved to Anfield in August 2010, is entering the final six months of his contract but Rodgers does not want him to leave, as he believes Jones plays a crucial role in supporting Pepe Reina.

Jones made seven consecutive appearances in the autumn when Reina was sidelined with a hamstring problem and Rodgers said: ‘Brad is someone I would like to keep. His contract is something we are looking at. We are looking to offer him that.’

Reina, according to Rodgers, remains “Liverpool’s number one” and has no worries about the Spaniard’s form. There were a few occasions earlier in the campaign when he looked out of sorts but his manager believes that is behind him.

‘Pepe will admit himself that he probably had a difficult couple of years but he now has a sense of his best years are in front of him – not behind him – and it is a great testament to him that he is now working harder than ever,’ said Rodgers.

‘He has lost weight, he looks fresh and bright; he is doing extra work and it is a great step forward to him and his commitment in terms of him staying at Liverpool.’

Swansea 0 Liverpool 0: No happy return for Rodgers in first game back at Liberty Stadium

There were warm handshakes, applause for both sets of supporters and slaps on the back for players past and present.

At first glance, it appeared Brendan Rodgers was a content soul after an intriguing game between Swansea and Liverpool.

His first return to the Liberty Stadium was always going to be a big deal and leaving with a point and a clean sheet could be construed as a positive.

To see the look on Rodgers' face,
though, before he headed down the tunnel told another story. His lips
were pursed, his gaze was wistful.

This was a game that, with some extra
quality in the right areas, Liverpool would have won. As it was, it was
the same old story: nearly but not quite.

'We wanted to keep our run going,' said Rodgers, whose side are unbeaten in their last eight Barclays Premier League games.

'I'd never say it was two points
dropped here. This is a difficult place to come. We are chipping away,
climbing the league and continually improving.

'If we can get the quality in the
final third to support what we have, then we have enough to keep the
team moving forward. It is a team who are coming together. I can see
improvement all the time.'

The improvement, however, will only
be slow unless Fenway Sports Group, the club's American owners,
appreciate what could potentially be gained with the right expenditure
when the January transfer window opens.

WILLIAMS V SUAREZ

Pre-match: The feuding pair were all smiles as they shook hands

8mins: Williams uses his experience, and considerable frame, to block a Suarez run into the box. The Uruguayan half-heartedly pleas for a penalty.

16mins: Suarez wriggles away from Williams, but is flagged offside, rightly, from Jose Enrique's pass.

23mins: Suarez is again free, this time at the near post, but fails to make good contact.

58mins: Suarez shows excellent skill to work a yard for a shot, which goes through Williams' legs and draws a smart save.

64mins: Williams sees a header cleared off the line by old Swansea team-mate Joe Allen.

71mins: Chico Flores gets the first yellow card of the day for bringing down Suarez.

83mins: A stray Raheem Sterling pass robs Suarez of the chance to shoot uncontested at goal.

Liverpool, after all, are only four
points behind an Arsenal side that Arsene Wenger still believes can
qualify for the Champions League.

That deficit might have been down to two had Rodgers been able to call on that extra quality to his forward line.

Luis Suarez cannot keep carrying
Liverpool on his own and the fact that only two of his team-mates have
scored in the Premier League since September 29 – Raheem Sterling and
Jose Enrique – shows where the team's deficiencies are.

That is where we need to improve,'
said Rodgers. 'We had 18 shots on goal, nine on target. But we need to
finish them when we arrive in good areas.'

It was Sterling and Enrique who went closest to breaking the deadlock here, though.

The former rattled the bar with a
thumping volley after 33 minutes, while the latter had an effort ruled
out for a marginal offside devision 60 seconds later after being picked
out by Suarez.

'I thought it was a goal,' said
Rodgers. 'But we played well. It was emotional returning to where I
spent a great time in my life.'

It looked for much of the opening 45
minutes that Rodgers would enjoy the happiest of returns with the
outstanding Glen Johnson and Sterling running amok down Swansea's left.

Johnson was denied by a fine stop by Gerhard Tremmel after exchanging passes with Suarez and also went close with a header.

Angel Rangel flung himself in front
of a Suarez blockbuster, while Enrique got in a tangle after another
superb cross from Johnson.

Yet Swansea were not without chances.
Pablo Hernandez bent an effort round a post after a rare mistake by
Steven Gerrard not long after Wayne Routledge had tested Pepe Reina.

They certainly contributed to a spectacle that contained 1,055 passes.

Clash: Nathan Dyer accidentally slid into Pepe Reina when trying to reach the ball

Whack: Both players stayed down after the challenge, but were on their feet within minutes

'Was it a point gained or two lost I think it was a good point,' said Swansea manager Michael Laudrup.

'Maybe Liverpool had more chances more than us but we had them. I'm pleased with my team.'

Laudrup was especially pleased in the
83rd minute when Suarez and Sterling failed to administer the ultimate
punishment after a quick break, and he remains more than content with
the way Swansea have started the campaign.

Rodgers left the impression he will be truly content only when reinforcements have arrived.

'It will evolve,' said Rodgers. 'The
guys are working well but you need to get your own type of players in
before you can say, “This is my side”.

'We will look to work with the players we have and hope to do some business in January.'

They can’t do it any other way. Liverpool’s European history is littered with dramatic last gasp wins and, after a haphazard night at Anfield, another is required.

For much of an entertaining contest with BSC Young Boys, it appeared that Brendan Rodgers’ side would secure the victory to guarantee their progress to the round of 32 with a game to spare but, once again, profligacy and carelessness proved to their undoing.

The latest Europa League tables, fixtures and results

As a result, Liverpool will head to Udine
on December 6 knowing that a win is required to guarantee progress to
the knockout stages. Liverpool have never fallen at the Europa League
group stages before and if that fate befalls them now, they will only
have themselves to blame.

Cruising after goals from Jonjo
Shelvey and Joe Cole either side of half-time, lapses in concentration
enabled Raul Bobadilla and Elsad Zverotic to profit spectacularly and
left Rodgers lamenting the naivety of Liverpool’s play.

‘We led twice in the game and missed a
hatful of chances,’ grumbled Rodgers. ‘To concede goals like we did was
very disappointing. The players gave everything against a very good
side. But when you get 2-1 up with two minutes to go, you have to show
better game management.

‘Now it is simple enough. We have got to get a good result (against Udine). We wanted to qualify here but it wasn’t to be.’

Any sense that this would be a
procession for Liverpool was quickly expunged.

Three times in the first
five minutes the visitors threatened Pepe Reina’s goal; Gonzalo Zarate
went close with an overhead kick, while Raul Bobadilla and Raphael
Nuzzolo both made Reina work.

Liverpool’s response was impressive. A
neat back flick from Shelvey sent Cole scampering through but he
scuffed his shot wide. Jordan Henderson shot straight at Marco Wolfli
after another good move. The passing and movement was, at times,
excellent.

Central to it all was Cole. It is no
secret he faces a mammoth task to salvage his Liverpool but his attitude
and application here could not be faulted. Always buzzing around the
box, demanding the ball and trying to make Liverpool play, he was
constantly involved and, fittingly, created the opener.

After exchanging passes with Suso on
33 minutes, the former England man darted into the area and his deft
clip into the centre, over goalkeeper Marco Wolfli, was met by Shelvey,
who had the simple task of nodding in from four yards.

This was as good as Cole has played
for Liverpool and he almost created a second on the stroke of half-time
for Suso but came good himself in the 72nd minute when finishing a move
that had involved substitutes Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez. It was his
first in Liverpool Red since April 2011.

‘Joe gave everything,’ Rodgers
acknowledged. ‘He is still not 100 per cent (fit) but he was much better
in offensive part of the game. He was bright and clever.’

If only the same could have been said
of Liverpool’s defending.

Group A

While there was no disputing the quality of
the strikes from Bobadilla and Zverotic in the 52nd and 89th minute
respectively, the way they came about left Rodgers aghast.

The second
equaliser, especially, was greatly lamented.

‘We get the chance to shoot at one end
of the field but then you see us walking back,’ said Rodgers. ‘They
(Young Boys) work their way through unchallenged and score with a shot
from the centre of the goal. It is disappointing. We did not need to
commit at that stage.’

But they will have to commit in Italy. It is, after all, the only way they can be sure to progress.

Rodgers lauds Luis after brilliant brace: 'Suarez is absolutely outstanding'

UPDATED:

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers hailed his 'master marksman' Luis Suarez after the striker produced another devastating display to defeat Wigan 3-0.

After a surprisingly flat first half by his own high standards, the Uruguay international scored twice and assisted with the third for Jose Enrique as the Reds registered only their fourth Barclays Premier League win of 2012.

Suarez now has nine league goals this season – making him England's top scorer – 12 overall and 26 in 56 league matches since arriving from Ajax in January 2011.

'Luis is a very big part of the team.
His first goal was a wonderful finish with a great weight of pass from
young Raheem (Sterling),' said the Reds boss.

'He finished it great and for the
second one there was a lovely pass from Enrique and a nice little
off-the-shoulder run and finish.

'He is a master marksman, absolutely outstanding, and we are thrilled to have him.'

Suarez, the club's only fit senior
striker, has scored more than half of Liverpool's 17 league goals but
Rodgers is not concerned the burden may become too much on the
25-year-old.

'Not at all. Of course we want other support around that but you can see he thrives on it,' added the Northern Irishman.

'If you look at his goal return this
season already he is enjoying playing in the system and enjoying the
freedom of being that loose striker.

The Liverpool manager has seen a precedent in the Premier League already and hopes the left-back can emulate it.

'If you look at (Tottenham's) Gareth Bale, he played at left-back and then moved forward and showed his strengths,' he added.

'Jose is someone I think can do that role with his power and pace.

'I said to him yesterday him and Raheem can get goals if they get (positionally) inside the frame of the goal.

'If you watch the replay he makes up a lot of ground to get in there and anticipate the rebound.'

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez felt
fatigue from the midweek international fixtures played a part in their
second-half performance but losing Ben Watson to a broken leg did not
help.

The 27-year was caught just above the shin by Reds winger Raheem Sterling's knee as they jumped for a ball in the first half.

'He has a fracture and we are going to assess him now because maybe he will require surgery,' said the Spaniard.

'If he needs surgery he will probably be out for four months and that will be a major blow for us.

'The injury affected us too much because I thought we started quite sharp and controlled the game in the first half.

'I thought we were the team who looked like being a real threat and I thought we stopped Liverpool completely.

Liverpool 3 Wigan 0: Suarez at the double as hosts cruise to victory over Latics

Striker Luis Suarez proved just how valuable he is to Liverpool with two goals and an assist to help secure only a second home win of the season.

The Uruguay international struck twice in nine second-half minutes and also played a part in the third which saw Jose Enrique score his first goal for the club.

Reports this week that Manchester City were ready to make a 40million bid for the striker in January were dismissed by Roberto Mancini and Brendan Rodgers, with the latter confidently stating his prize asset was not for sale.

Match facts

Liverpool: Reina, Wisdom, Agger (Carragher 82), Skrtel, Jose Enrique, Johnson, Gerrard, Allen, Sterling, Suarez (Shelvey 87),
Fernandez Saez (Henderson 36).

Subs Not Used: Jones, Sahin, Cole, Coates.

Goals: Suarez 47, 58, Jose Enrique 65.

Wigan: Al Habsi, Ramis, Caldwell (Gomez 69), Figueroa, Boyce, Watson (Jones 32), McCarthy, Beausejour, Maloney, Di Santo (Miyaichi 69),Kone.

Subs Not Used: Pollitt, McManaman, Boselli, Stam.

Booked: Figueroa, Caldwell, Di Santo.

Attendance: 44,913

Referee: Kevin Friend (Leicestershire).

And in any case, scoring in five
successive matches to take his tally to 10 in as many appearances would
appear to have boosted Suarez's price tag by several million more.

Not that Liverpool would consider –
or could even countenance – selling a player who is so vital to any
chance of success in the short- to medium-term.

Without the 25-year-old's input this
season – from goals and assists – the Reds would be in the bottom three.
It is difficult to put a price on exactly how much that is worth to a
team still growing into Rodgers' way of working but it is safe to say it
would likely take much more to replace what he has brought to the side
this campaign.

Yet Suarez was strangely subdued in a
first half which had very few talking points. With goalkeeper Jose
Reina making his first appearance since October 7, Rodgers reverted to
back four having opted for three centre-backs at Chelsea last weekend.

Somewhat surprisingly he selected
Enrique on the left of midfield but before the half was out he had
tinkered with his tactical line-up having seen his side fail to get a
grip on the game.

The hosts began well with Suarez's
cross turned behind by Ben Watson and Daniel Agger's header from the
corner tipped just wide by the outstretched hand of Ali Al Habsi.

After Reina shrugged off some of the
rustiness with a routine save from Arouna Kone's long-range effort both
Agger and Suso headed over.

Andre Wisdom's pass into space gave
Sterling, who had also had an uncharacteristically quiet 45 minutes, the
chance to nip in front of Maynor Figueroa and run at the Wigan defence.

When he crossed for Suarez the
Uruguayan's first-time shot, assisted by a slight deflection of Ivan
Ramis, beat Al Habsi. If the goal energised the home side it ignited
Suarez, who was rampant after that.

Enrique drove infield from the left
and poked in a through-ball which still required plenty from Suarez but
in his current form there was only going to be one outcome and he easily
beat the goalkeeper. The third goal had a touch of fortune but only in
its origin.

A throw-in down Wigan's left should
have gone to the visitors but the officials awarded it to Liverpool and
it was from that they finished off the game.

Suarez again had major part to play,
sliding a pass through the inside-right channel to Sterling whose shot
was parried by Al Habsi into the path of Enrique who could not miss from
a few yards out.

The Spaniard, benefiting from his
advanced position, celebrated only his second goal in five years in
English football, his first coming for Newcastle against Nottingham
Forest in March 2010.

Confidence was now surging through a
Liverpool side who had previously been so timid and reticent in front
of their own fans in 2012 – having previously only won three league
matches at Anfield all year.

That was typified by Glen Johnson's
run, starting on the halfway line close to the left touchline, which saw
the England defender drive just wide with his right foot from the edge
of the area.

Suarez eventually departed to a
well-deserved standing ovation late on as Rodgers protected his
investment on the back of seven-match unbeaten run.

Brendan Rodgers thinks it will be tough for Liverpool to land transfer targets

Rodgers fears Liverpool could be in for another tough transfer window as he looks to strengthen

16:57 GMT, 2 November 2012

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers admits it will not be easy to find players to sign in the January transfer window despite having funds to strengthen his squad.

The Red boss brushed aside speculation linking him with a move for Arsenal forward Theo Walcott, who is out of contract next summer.

And while much has been made of a suggested clear-out of the high-earning, out-of-favour stars like Joe Cole and Stewart Downing the Northern Irishman conceded his primary focus was on strengthening his squad.

'There is nothing to say (about Walcott). He is an Arsenal player and it is all speculation about many players at the moment,' said Rodgers.

'We'll have funds and I'm in talks with the owners at the moment, along with our recruitment team.

'January is always a difficult window. You don't get too many top, top players.

'Clubs will be unwilling to move on players but we have to scour the country and the world to try to get the types of players that are going to be available and correct for our model of play.

'Obviously we are limited in what we can bring both in terms of availability of players and financially but there is no doubt we need to do that.

'Our scouting team are working hard to identify those talents and who might be available.

'There is no doubt we need that support (from new players) in January and I am very confident we will be able to do that.'

Sunday's visitors Newcastle have led the way with their recruitment policy, under the guidance of the well-respected Graham Carr, and Liverpool have regularly been linked with Magpies striker Demba Ba.

Rodgers acknowledged the work which has gone on at St James' Park since Alan Pardew took over.

'Scouting at any club is very important. Obviously Alan has gone in there and Graham Carr, as chief scout, has had a big responsibility in getting the players in,' he said.

'I think they have bought in really well. (Yohan) Cabaye is a terrific player, an excellent passer of the ball, and the boys up front (Ba and Papiss Cisse) have done well for them.'

Rodgers insists he is more focused on bringing in players to bolster his playing staff than he is on off-loading those who appear to have no long-term future at Anfield.

The likes of Cole, whose 45-minute performance in the midweek Capital One Cup defeat at home to Swansea did little to enhance his claims, Downing and, to some extent, Jordan Henderson and Jose Enrique have found themselves on the fringes this season.

Ideally Liverpool would like to have Cole, in particular, and his supposed 100,000-a-week salary off the wage bill in order to free up cash for new signings while if money could be generated from other sales it would strengthen Rodgers' hand in the transfer market.

'Joe is like every other player. I've have good communication with Joe and we speak regularly,' said the manager.

'He along with the other players are working hard to find their way into the team and Joe is like everyone else.

Target Liverpool have been linked with a move for Theo Walcott

'But for us my concentration is purely on the squad we have.

'We know we need to reinforce the group, so that's something that is ongoing.

'The priority is to get players into the building. Our squad is very small, very thin on the ground, and the players have performed admirably up until now.

'At this moment in time it really is about reinforcing the group rather than looking too much at people going the other way.'

Rodgers' immediate focus is the fitness of goalkeeper Jose Reina, absent for four matches with a hamstring injury, and defender Glen Johnson, also a doubt for the weekend with a similar problem.

Brad Jones has stood in ably for Reina and could give the Reds boss a selection poser when the Spain international returns to fitness.

'Pepe Reina and Glen Johnson are still receiving treatment,' said Rodgers.

'Glen has been out on the pitch so we'll see how he goes over the next couple of days. Pepe will be likewise.

'We can't rule them out at this stage but I can't say they are fully fit as yet.
'I made it quite clear Pepe was the number one goalkeeper when I came in here and I've really enjoyed working with him.

'Brad was the number three goalkeeper and he has worked his way up to number two and shown what a number two is about; coming in and being solid for the games you are asked to play.

'My decision will be when Pepe is fit. At the minute there is no decision as Brad is clearly playing in goal, he is doing a really good job, working hard to keep himself in the team and give me a decision when Pepe's back.'

Everton 2 Liverpool 2: Osman and Naismith rescue point for Moyes after Suarez double

15:52 GMT, 28 October 2012

Everton displayed all the qualities which have kept them in the top four this season as Liverpool blew a two-goal lead in the 219th Merseyside derby.

When Luis Suarez headed in his sixth goal in eight league matches in the 20th minute, after Leighton Baines had earlier turned the Uruguay international's cross-shot into his own net, the Reds appeared in control at Goodison Park.

However, in a pulsating first half Leon Osman pulled one back almost immediately before Steven Naismith equalised 10 minutes before half-time.

The remaining 55 minutes subsequently failed to match what had gone before, and although both sides could have won it after the break, the point was enough to keep Everton in fourth, six points ahead of their near-neighbours.

Liverpool fielded five derby debutants – Raheem Sterling, Andre Wisdom, Nuri Sahin, Suso and Joe Allen – with Everton having just two in Kevin Mirallas and Naismith.

That may have contributed to what was a first 45 minutes so open it belied its history of being the oldest and longest-running cross-city rivalry in English football.

Suarez opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Steven Gerrard's pass sent Jose Enrique, on his first start since October 2, racing down the left and although his cross flashed through the six-yard area it was collected by the Uruguay international, whose drilled cross-shot return was deflected in by Baines.

His reaction was to race to the dug-out and dive full-length – in a celebration reminiscent of Jurgen Klinsmann's for his debut goal in English football in 1994 – in front of Toffees boss David Moyes after his pre-match comments about players going to ground easily.

Liverpool's Luis Suarez scores his and Liverpool's first goal with Everton player Baines deflection.

Ironically, later in the half, it was
one of Moyes' own players Phil Neville who was booked for diving on the
edge of Liverpool's penalty area.

That prompted a swift retort from injured Reds defender Glen Johnson on Twitter.

'Haha classic P Neville battering Luis for diving, then what does he get booked for….! Haha,' he wrote.

'Worst dive ever…. Looked like someone tied his laces together while he weren't looking haha.'

Six minutes later Osman's slight trip on Sterling presented Gerrard with the chance to curl in a free-kick and Suarez's deft header helped the ball past Tim Howard and into the far corner of the net.

For a team whose problems in scoring were well documented, things seemed to be going better than expected for Brendan Rodgers' side.

But Everton have not forced their way into the top four this season on a wing and a prayer, and they produced an instant response.

When goalkeeper Brad Jones, still deputising for the recovering Jose Reina who was on the bench, could only punch a corner to the edge of the area, Osman controlled and volleyed home.

The game, surprisingly, became even more open with Suarez shooting just wide before Marouane Fellaini, back from injury after two matches out, ran the ball out of play as he bore down on goal when teed up by Nikica Jelavic.

Derbies can do strange things to people – highlighted by Neville's diving aberration – and the sight of Tim Howard, one of football's genuine nice guys, hurtling out of his goal in an attempt to get 17-year-old Sterling sent off for what he thought was a second bookable offence was ungentlemanly and unnecessary.

But the hosts soon put the focus back on football when Fellaini's cross was left by Martin Skrtel and Naismith nipped in front of Enrique to equalise from close range.

Everton poured forward with the excellent Mirallas marauding down the left against the inexperience of Wisdom and Sterling.

The Belgian had one shot turned away by Jones and another blocked by Skrtel after a brilliant turn took him past Wisdom, reluctant to make a challenge in the penalty area, while Seamus Coleman also blazed over.

After such a rousing 45 minutes, the second half failed to live up to those standards.

Everton suffered a blow when Mirallas failed to appear after the break and was replaced by Magaye Gueye while Rodgers made a tactical switch by bringing on Sebastian Coates, another derby debutant, and Jonjo Shelvey to go 3-4-1-2.

Chances continued to be created with Sterling clipping an excellent chance wide having been put through by Enrique while Jelavic, surprisingly quiet in such an open game, just failed to connect in the six-yard box before heading wide Leighton Baines' free-kick wide.
