Rangers 3 Elgin 0: Kyle breaks his Ibrox duck as McCoist's men ease into Scottish Cup fifth round

Kevin Kyle claimed his first Ibrox goal as Rangers dumped Elgin City from the William Hill Scottish Cup with a comfortable win.

Dean Shiels and Kal Naismith were also on the scoresheet to help ensure safe passage into the fifth round of the competition.

Both clubs would have welcomed the opportunity simply to play this match after last week's Irn-Bru Third Division encounter was postponed when it emerged Elgin had sold too many tickets for the visit of Ally McCoist's men.

Rangers named an unchanged side from their last game, a win over East Stirling, for today's clash in front of a crowd of 23,195.

David Templeton and Francisco Sandaza were both on the bench after lengthy spells on the sidelines through injury, while fit-again youngster Darren Cole was also among the substitutes for the first time this season.

The match was less than two minutes old when Rangers had the ball in the back of the net through Kyle.

But he was denied the opener by the offside flag and the decision looked like it may have been harsh on the striker.

A minute of applause rang around the stadium in the 2nd minute in support of Light Blues legend Sandy Jardine who is being treated for cancer.

Rangers continued to threaten and the lively Barrie McKay surged into the box from the left before teeing up the shot for Kyle but he connected awkwardly in front of goal and the chance was lost.

At the other end, Neil Alexander was called into action to block an angled drive from Craig Gunn.

The home side still looked the more likely to find the back of the net and Shiels stung the palms of goalkeeper John Gibson with a powerful shot.

Gibson was called into action again moments later, this time to tip wide an impressive 30-yard effort from Ian Black.

With half-time approaching and the match still deadlocked, Lee Wallace burst past Jamie Duff down the left flank before cutting back for Kyle but he fired wide.

Shiels finally had the net bulging two minutes before the break with a shot from a tight angle that fell across the goalkeeper and nestled in the far bottom corner.

Elgin were not too far away shortly after the re-start when Stuart Leslie rifled into the side netting after collecting a teasing ball across the face of goal.

Kyle then squandered the chance to double Rangers' lead when he met a McKay cross only to see his header flash wide of the upright.

Black had required treatment for a knock earlier in the game and, clearly still struggling, was replaced by Cole on the hour-mark.

Cole immediately set up Andy Little for a diving header that was off target, before Shiels was prevented from claiming his second of the day by an impressive block from Gibson.

But the goalkeeper was picking the ball out of the net after 69 minutes when Kyle rose above everyone in the box to connect with a McKay corner and nod past the grasp of Gibson.

Only a great save from Alexander prevented Sean Crighton from pulling a goal back for Elgin, before Templeton was thrown into the action with just under 20 minutes to go.

McKay was denied by the woodwork when his deflected effort crashed off the post, before substitute Naismith put the gloss on the win when he slotted past Gibson with 85 minutes on the clock, seconds after replacing Kyle.

South Africa thrashed World Twenty20 hosts Sri Lanka in Hambantota after a rain delay reduced their Group C showdown to a seven-overs-a-side match.

Captain AB de Villiers crunched 30 from 13 balls in South Africa's 78 for four and Sri Lanka never threatened to go close to that imposing total, limping instead to 46 for five.

Fortunately, given it would have been a cruel way to go out, today's match only determined which of the two teams would finish top of the group, not which would go through to the Super Eight stage. Both were already assured of advancing, after wins over Zimbabwe.

South Africa lost Richard Levi to the
fourth ball of the innings, to a brilliant diving catch by Dilshan
Munaweera off the bowling of Nuwan Kulasekara, before Hashim Amla
clubbed three boundaries over the infield to make a swift 16.

Amla was stumped by Kumar Sangakkara off Rangana Herath, and that brought De Villiers to the batting strip.

Angelo Matthews briefly clamped the
brakes on with a tidy fourth over, but Herath then began to take
punishment as De Villiers seized the initiative.

A swept four from the first ball of the fifth over by the skipper was followed by a vicious punch over the ropes for six.

De Villiers fell when Jeevas Mendis
showed safe hands at mid-off to give Lasith Malinga a wicket, having
been taken for 14 runs in the preceding five deliveries by the same
batsman.

On 65 for three going into the final
over, South Africa lost Faf du Plessis but JP Duminy played a clever
scoop shot to the boundary from the fifth ball before drilling a
straight six to end the innings.

Tillakaratne Dilshan fell in the first over of Sri Lanka's reply, brilliantly run out by wicketkeeper De Villiers.

Mahela Jayawardene had struggled to
get the ball away so it was perhaps to Sri Lanka's advantage that he was
dismissed for four at the end of the second over.

Yet at eight for two, the home side already looked to be batting in a lost cause.

They rode their luck when Albie Morkel dropped a steepler to hand Sangakkara a life.

The same batsman was soon on his way though, top-edging an attempted pull shot to De Villiers.
Perera and Dilshan Munaweera perished when hitting out in the closing two overs, Sri Lanka's hopes long over.

Lukasz Fabianski is desperate to leave Arsenal after enduring a frustrating season on the bench.

The Poland international has lost his position as the Gunners' No 1 to compatriot Wojciech Szczesny.

And the 27-year-old revealed he wanted to quit in the January transfer window but was refused permission by manager Arsene Wenger.

Petr Cech says Chelsea are happy to be classed as underdogs in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich.

The Blues have already upset the odds to beat Barcelona and book their place in Saturday's final.

And Roberto Di Matteo's side will have
to see off Bayern on their own patch if they are to get their hands on
the trophy for the first time.

'It's a final and you would think that the chances are 50-50, but to
play at your own stadium and have your own dressing room is a huge
advantage,' Chelsea keeper Cech told CTK.

'This coincidence of events has made Bayern the favourites. We will try to outsmart them in some way.'

While Cech believes fortune has favoured Bayern, he hopes the expectation they find themselves under will aid Chelsea's cause.

'The final is about how the two teams cope with the pressure,” added the Czech shot-stopper.

'They are the favourites as they play at home but the pressure is bigger on them than it is on us.

'That might be to our advantage, it might be a disadvantage. We will have to wait and see how the match goes.

'Either way, we will try to make their role as favourites as unpleasant as possible. Certainly we are not going there just on a trip. We want to win.'

Medal thieves won't spoil another FA Cup final for Glen Johnson if Liverpool win

Glen Johnson will be keeping a close eye on his medal if Liverpool manage to beat Chelsea in the FA Cup final on Saturday.

Johnson was part of the Portsmouth side who beat Cardiff 1-0 in 2008, but his medal was snatched from a hotel room after the final.

The England full-back described the FA Cup win as one of the best moments in his career, but the day was marred by the theft.

'It's great to see the rivalries between the two sets of fans,' Johnson said.

'The fans are excited on the day leading up to it and the night before. The whole build up is fantastic.

'But yes, me and Jamie Ashdown had our medals stolen.

'After the final the club had booked a meal and a night out for everybody.

'When we went back to the hotel before the meal, we put our medals in our rooms, and I hid mine in a bag, in another bag, in another bag, but we got back and I woke up the next morning and it wasn't there.

'Thankfully they made us another one. That one's in a safe place!'

As for Saturday's final, Johnson is treating it as a regular game, despite playing for Chelsea between 2003 and 2007.

'It's doesn't add extra spice for me,' he said.

'I take it as any other game, but it's a big occasion.

'It's going to be a difficult game. Any game in the final, you know it's going to be against a good team because everybody rises to the occasion.

'It's great for the club to be in another final and we'll look to try and get another trophy.'
