Tim Krul would have told anyone who suggested Newcastle would head into the last day of the season with Champions League football still up for grabs that they were mad.

The 24-year-old Holland international embarked on the campaign having been installed as Alan Pardew's number one and intent on improving upon the 12th-place finish the Magpies had secured at the end of the first term back in the Barclays Premier League.

But they will run out at Everton tomorrow knowing they can finish no lower than fifth no matter what happens, and that if they can win at Goodison Park, they could yet snatch even third place from current occupants Arsenal and a dream ticket to Europe's biggest table.

Krul said: 'It's a really important game and the chance of a lifetime. Hopefully one of the other teams, Arsenal or Tottenham, will drop some points and we could be there.

'To say that with one game to go is something special. Finishing above Chelsea and Liverpool – if you had said that at the start of the season, people would have said you were mad.

'I would have said you were mad, so that shows you what a fantastic season we have had and we can be proud of that.

'That gives us more confidence to go to Everton and prove how good we are.'

That may be easier said than done, however, with Everton themselves in good form as the season draws to a close.

Victory for David Moyes' side would claim seventh place and perhaps more importantly for their fans, mean they end the campaign ahead of rivals Liverpool.

With Newcastle having already over-achieved, the onus is really on the Gunners and Spurs as they attempt to secure another season of Champions League football.

Respect: Newcastle have upset the critics this season

However, Krul is adamant that he and his team-mates must leave the pitch at Everton with no regrets.

Asked if all the pressure is on the North London duo, he said: “Yes and no, because we have got a fantastic opportunity, so we cannot allow anything to slide.

'We need to win this game. The manager has kept on saying this for a while now, these opportunities don't come along very often, so you have to take them with both hands, and we have done it.

'We have definitely done that, but we have to finish the season on a high now and hopefully get a win at Everton so we don't sit in the dressing room on Sunday disappointed that we could have or would have.

'We need to get the three points and hopefully they drop some points.'

However the final day unfolds, Krul will look back upon his first season in the frontline with immense fondness and looking forward to the Euro 2012 finals with his country.

He could hardly have imagined just how special the campaign would prove to be, and the events of the past few months have fully justified his decision to sign a new five-year contract in March.

Krul said: 'I pinch myself sometimes, saying: “This is your first full season, how are we going to top this”.

'It's been great. We always talk about team spirit and I have always said Newcastle has the potential to be a top, top team, and we are here now.

'I extended my contract because I wanted to be playing for a club who fight for places like this and that's what's happening now, and I am over the moon about that.

'To be playing for the top spots in the league with one game to go is something special, and it's definitely exceeded all our expectations.'

Patrice Evra believes Manchester United can win the Premier League

We can still ruin City's day and snatch the title, claims United captain Evra

Patrice Evra says he still believes Manchester United can win the title from rivals Manchester City on the final day of the season.

United are only behind on goal difference and would require either City to slip up at home to QPR or an improbable landslide win over Sunderland to edge back in front.

'Maybe people will say I'm crazy, but I still believe,' Evra told the BBC.

'I know destiny is not in our hands. If we want to keep believing in the miracle, we have to beat Sunderland.'

Manchester City have collected 52 from a possible 54 points at Etihad Stadium this season, while QPR have lost 13 times on the road this season – more than any other side in the top flight.

But, after United's 2-0 win over Swansea on Sunday, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson told fans at Old Trafford this weekend could mark 'the biggest celebration of our lives'.

He also suggested relegation-threatened Rangers, managed by former Manchester City boss Mark Hughes, would not lack motivation to ruin the leaders' party plans.

Evra believes the dynamics of the season's final day will allow Manchester United to heap extra pressure on their rivals especially with all games kicking off at 3pm.

'If we score first, maybe the City fans in the stadium will start to be nervous,' he added.
'When you are nervous, you rush things and you don't do the things you want to do.

'That's why I still believe, but we must make sure we are ready against Sunderland.'

In their own game at home to QPR on 8 April, United won 2-0 to move eight points clear with six matches remaining.

Evra believes United's late collapse in the 4-4 draw against Everton three weeks later, a game in which he headed against the post with his side leading 4-2, marked the point the title race tipped back in City's favour.

'If you play for Manchester United, you have to accept the pressure,' he said. 'You have to win every year no matter what you do. People don't care, you have to win.

'It's going to hurt a lot. If we see City celebrate, people will say it's the end of the Manchester United empire.'

Sir Alex Ferguson does not expect
Manchester City to encounter the same problems staying at the Premier
League summit as Newcastle did under Kevin Keegan.

The Magpies looked certain to clinch
the title in 1996 after Keegan brought in some of the most exciting
attacking players the Premier League had ever seen.

It was a flawed concept, though, as Newcastle defence was not up to the task of keeping the opposition out.

Manchester United eventually surged past them and just two years later they were down in 13th spot.

But Ferguson does not see City suffering in a similar manner, even if they fail to clinch their first championship since 1968 on Sunday.

Indeed, he does not think anyone views football in the same idealistic way as Keegan. 'Kevin was different,' said Ferguson. 'He was a romantic.

'He brought in so many attractive attacking forwards, (Les) Ferdinand, (Peter) Beardsley, (Faustino) Asprilla, (David) Ginola, (Philippe) Albert.

'It was a fantastic array of players.

'They were entertainers but that was Kevin.

'He wanted to win at Newcastle with the most exciting team of all time.

'I always remember when he went to Belgium and won 5-0 away from home in a European tie (at Royal Antwerp in 1994), he said afterwards: “We are invincible”. Dearie me.

'That was Kevin. He was such a romantic for the attacking part that Newcastle had at the time.'

Harry Redknapp: Gareth Bale has no chance of joining Barcelona

Harry Redknapp has denied claims that a 32million deal is in place for Gareth Bale to join Barcelona this summer.

Reports surfaced in Spain on Friday indicating that the Tottenham winger is set to sign a five-year deal to play alongside Lionel Messi, Xavi and Co.

Bale, 22, has long since been on the La Liga giants’ radar and the Catalan club were believed to be stepping up their efforts to sign the Wales star.

But Redknapp said: ‘I don’t know anything about it, this is the first time anything’s been mentioned to me.

‘I haven’t seen that at all and I
wouldn’t think there is the slightest bit of truth in that, wherever it
has come from.

'Not a chance, I would not have thought,’ he added.

The Spurs manager’s words will help
appease growing fears among supporters that Bale could be allowed to
depart White Hart Lane at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Redknapp once again reaffirmed his interest in signing Ajax captain Jan Vertonghen this summer.

The Belgium centre back has pleaded with his club to agree a deal with Spurs to pave the way for his move to north London.

But Sportsmail understands that
Arsenal are closely monitoring the 25-year-old’s situation and are
intending to gazump their arch rivals.

Redknapp admitted: ‘Yes, he
(Vertonghen) is a good player. But it’s difficult for me to talk about
him too much because someone might come in and give him more wages and
we’ll lose him.’

And the 65-year-old joked: ‘Actually, he’s rubbish.’

Redknapp insists there will be
no mass exodus of Tottenham's stars this summer even if they fail to
secure Champions League football.

Tottenham
go into Sunday's season-finale knowing a win over Fulham will secure
them fourth place in the Barclays Premier League.

Under
normal circumstances that would guarantee Redknapp's team a place in
the Champions League, but should Chelsea beat Bayern Munich in the
European Cup final a week on Saturday, Spurs will have to settle for a
place in the Europa League – a competition the Tottenham boss has never
hidden his disdain for.

Redknapp says Bale and other stars like Luka Modric, will remain at White Hart Lane regardless of whether they qualify or not.

'That idea gets a bit over-hyped,' Redknapp said. 'When they [Bale and Modric] came to Tottenham, they weren't in the Champions League. When Luka Modric came here they were nowhere near.

'He didn't come here because they were in the Champions League, he came here because they were a good club, he was on decent money and had a chance to play in the Premier League.

'Are you telling me people aren't going to sign for Chelsea next year if they don't win the Champions League

'Of course they will. If they are paid the right money and get the right contract, they are going to a fantastic club in London.

'They will still go to Chelsea, they will still go to Liverpool because it is a great club and they will still come to Tottenham because it's a great club.'

Spurs fought a ferocious battle with Chelsea last summer to keep hold of Modric despite the Blues submitting a 40million bid for the playmaker.

Redknapp said: 'You have got to keep your best players. If you don't then where are you going You can forget about Champions League football in the future if you sell them and they [Bale and Modric] are two of them.'

There is still a chance that Tottenham can qualify automatically for the Champions League. The Londoners will leapfrog Arsenal in to third if they beat Fulham and the Gunners drop points at West Brom on what promises to be a tense final day of the season.

At one point in January Tottenham were within touching distance of the top of the table, but a terrible run of one win in nine matches saw them slip out of contention for their first title in 51 years.

Out of their hands: Chelsea could ruin Tottenham's Champions League hopes

Out of their hands: Chelsea could ruin Tottenham's Champions League hopes

Despite this, Redknapp insists Spurs' season should be viewed as a success, regardless of whether they make the Champions League or not.

The 65-year-old added: 'If we can finish third it would be great. But if we finish fourth it would still be a great achievement. We would have taken that at the beginning of the season.

'We haven't finished above Chelsea too many times since the Premier League started. We will finish above Liverpool and we will have done that for the past couple of years now.

'Sunday will be a big day. We just have to concentrate on ourselves and get the three points.'

Redknapp admits he has a 'big problem' at left-back for Sunday's game, with Benoit Assou-Ekotto out due to a shoulder injury and back-up Danny Rose missing through suspension.

Scott Parker is also doubt with the Achilles injury that has kept him out of the starting line-up for the last three games.

Hands up if you want to win the title The Manchester City players were put through their final preparations ahead of the season decider at home to QPR.

The City players looked in good spirits as they trained at their Carrington base knowing they need to match rivals Manchester United's result to win their first title for 44 years.

And manager Roberto Mancini has played down the personal battle between him and former City chief Mark Hughes, who will be in the away dugout on Sunday.

Hughes, who was sacked prior to Mancini's arrival at the Etihad Stadium in December 2009, takes his current side to Eastlands on Sunday needing points to be sure of avoiding relegation.

Depriving City of victory could also deny them the Barclays Premier League title but while some have suggested that might give Hughes double reason for motivation, Mancini claims the teams are all that matter.

'They want to do everything to stay in the Premier League and for this reason I think it will be a tough game.

Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted he is relying on Manchester City to do something 'stupid' to gift them the title on Sunday.

With the Manchester giants level on points at the top of the table, City know they will be crowned champions if they win at home to relegation-threatened QPR because of their superior goal difference.

But United – who travel to Sunderland – will have a chance to snatch the title at the death if City fail to secure three points at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Final fling: Sir Alex Ferguson speaks during his Friday morning press conference

Speaking at his Friday morning press conference, Ferguson said: 'Everyone wants to win their last game of the season and we're no different. It's important for us, we'll try and do our best and hopefully something stupid will happen to City.

'We're going to Sunderland with a
chance of winning the league and you know it'll never be easy. In these
last day matches where we have a chance of winning the league, three
times we've won it, and once we lost the title by drawing at West Ham.

'They're not easy games. We were 1-0 down to Tottenham in 1999. They're never easy.

'We have to do something about it. That is the only thing we can do. We have to meet challenges and the good thing is that we tend to get there in the end.

'In the situation we are in at the moment, it looks as though we are going to lose out this season. But there are a lot of young players in the squad. We don't look, in any way, as though it is the end of a period for us.

'In many ways it is the start for a lot of young players here. The challenge is very obvious to them now if we lose the league.

'As we did when Chelsea won the
league two years in a row, we have to do something about it. We managed
to do that. Hopefully we can do it again.'

Ferguson can only prepare his side as best as possible against Martin O'Neill's Sunderland – a match he knows is far from easy.

He added: 'Martin has turned the club
around, no question about that. [Former boss] Steve Bruce was very
unfortunate, it had a lot to do with him being from Newcastle so he
never got any leeway.

'Martin
came with a great CV – every club he's been at he's made them better,
like Villa, Leicester and Celtic. He is an outstanding manager, no doubt
about that, and it's not going to be easy for us up there, we know
that.'

Ferguson has claimed City may have 'fallen apart' this season had it not been for the fact they had the Barclays Premier League title in sight.

It represents a major achievement for manager Roberto Mancini, who has had to deal with numerous issues, including Carlos Tevez's lengthy absence from the club and Mario Balotelli's erratic behaviour.

'It is obvious all the things he has had to deal with,' said Ferguson. 'If he didn't have the closeness to win the league, it might have fallen apart.'

Instead, City look set to be crowned champions, setting United a challenge Ferguson likens to the one Jose Mourinho laid down following his arrival at Chelsea in 2004.

'We had to contend with Jose's management style, which was very effective,' said Ferguson. 'He did a fantastic job there.

'You knew you were competing against a very clever manager. You weren't just facing the money, you were facing a very united squad.

'They were hard to beat. City – quality-wise – are very similar to Chelsea at that time. Some of their players have had outstanding seasons. When you win the league you need five or six players who are consistently good all the time.

'City have had that this year and the manager, for most of the part, has done well.'

Ferguson's hopes have been hit by the withdrawal of Chris Smalling, who will also miss Euro 2012 with a groin injury.

'Chris has suffered a bad injury,'
said Ferguson. 'It is a groin muscle injury and he will miss the
European Championships. We are assessing what to do at the moment but it
is a bad injury.'

Ferguson
confirmed Danny Welbeck would be available for this summer's
tournament, even though he will miss Sunday's trip to Sunderland with an
ankle injury.

'He is still out just now but he should be fit for the Euros,' he added.

While missing key players, Ferguson does have an allay at the Etihad on Sunday, when his former player Mark Hughes leads QPR in what is a vital game for the relegation-threatened Hoops.

Hughes is in line for a 1million bonus if he keeps Rangers in the Premier League, while his trusted aides, Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki, will also land hefty pay-outs.

The west London side need a point to avoid relegation.

City sacked Hughes in 2009 and replaced him with Mancini in a move described as ‘unethical’ by United manager Ferguson last weekend.

But the 27-year-old is more concerned about QPR's needs with Mark Hughes' men requiring a win – or to better Bolton's result at Stoke – to ensure their own top-flight survival.

He said: 'I’m concentrating on QPR as we have a massive job to do for ourselves.
