Cipriani's manager James Williamson told The Sun: 'Danny’s spending the night in hospital. X-rays and scans will be carried out overnight.

'He’s obviously in pain. He was running across the road and just misjudged the speed of the bus.'

A bystander told the Leeds Student website: 'It was like a film, (the bus passengers) were all shook up and screaming.'

A

'The police have investigated this incident and have reported that First and its driver are not at fault.

'We understand the pedestrian is an England rugby international, and we wish him a speedy recovery.'

Cipriani will miss just the one remaining fixture for Sale this season. But it's a big one.

The Sharks were scheduled to face his former club Wasps at the Salford City Stadium on May 4.

Cipriani landed in hot water in 2011 for taking a bottle of vodka from the bar of a local nightspot without paying for it and was later stood down for a month for breaching team curfews and failing to turn up to training.

Cipriani and actress girlfriend Kelly Brook, 33, and recently rekindled their relationship after she split from former rugby star Thom Evans.

So, just what is the Otley Run…

The Otley Run is a pub crawl which wings its way from the student-populated areas of Headingley in Leeds, back into the city centre campuses.

There is no defined route, but a number of pubs make up the traditional locations for the booze-filled student party.

It's a drunken all-dayer which typically sees those involved in fancy dress partying at up to 16 pubs heading into the city – and usually finishing up at one of the campus bars.

Massadio Haidara could return to action next week after the Newcastle defender was on the receiving end of a horror tackle from Wigan's Callum McManaman

Fortunately for the 21-year-old and Newcastle, the French defender could feature against Fulham next weekend, but will miss Saturday's Barclays Premier League clash at Manchester City.

Pardew, while surprised at comments made
by Wigan chairman Dave Whelan and manager Roberto Martinez after the
game, was simply relieved not to have lost his January signing for
several months.

Asked if either the club or the defender had received an apology from the Latics, he said: 'No, I don't think so.

'I was a little bit surprised at the manager's and the chairman's
comments that it was a fair challenge – I think everybody else could see
that it wasn't. But that's opinion and I can understand them wanting to
defend their player.

'It would be interesting to know what their opinion would have been if
it was Cheick Tiote on [James] McCarthy, their outstanding young
midfield player.

'But it is what it is, it's done and we move on to another game.'

Pardew also
renewed his calls for the Premier League to employ professional
assistant referees in the wake of McManaman’s controversial challenge.

Pardew’s belief that referees should
team up with full-time assistants was only strengthened in the wake of
the incident at the DW Stadium during which the French
full back was carried off with what looked at the time like a serious
knee injury.

Unsighted referee Mark Halsey took no
action over the tackle, and McManaman escaped retrospective action
because one of the officials did have a clear view and deemed it fair.

Haidara's fellow full backs Mathieu Debuchy and Davide Santon are also on Newcastle's casualty list for the trip to the Etihad.

Tottenham Hotspur legend Gary Mabbutt was rushed to hospital for an emergency operation on a circulation blockage in his left leg.

The former captain was omitted to King's College Hospital, London, where he had a successful peripheral artery bypass operation. He will remain in hospital for two weeks while he recovers.

In a statement Tottenham said: 'The club are delighted to report that Gary Mabbutt is now making a successful recovery from an emergency operation to cure a circulation blockage in his left leg.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger could
face a defensive headache when Barclays Premier League action resumes at
Sunderland on Saturday.

The Gunners were already sweating on
the fitness of captain Thomas Vermaelen's ankle injury before the
players left for international duty, where fellow centre-half Laurent
Koscielny limped off during France's defeat to Germany in Paris with a
reported calf problem.

Should both men fail to recover in time for the trip to the Stadium of Light, then out-of-favour Sebastien Squillaci or Spanish 20-year-old Ignasi Miquel could have to step in to the heart of the defence alongside Per Mertesacker.

Francis Coquelin is another option, but the defensive-midfielder has missed a couple of matches with a hamstring strain.

Meanwhile, midfielders Tomas Rosicky (virus) and Aaron Ramsey, who returned from Wales camp with a calf injury, are also doubtful for the trip to the north-east.

Forward Gervinho is set to rejoin the squad following Ivory Coast's elimination from the African Nations Cup, but is expected to be given some recovery time before being thrown straight back into action as Arsenal look to maintain momentum from their four-match unbeaten run.

Nacho Monreal impressed on his debut after a deadline day move from Malaga. The Spain international looks set for a run in the side with England left-back Kieran Gibbs still sidelined by a thigh problem.

It is another setback for the 23-year-old, who has suffered a string of fitness issues in recent seasons, including breaking his metatarsal in a Champions League game against Standard Liege in November 2009.

Gibbs, however, will not let that hold him back.

Injury concern: Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen

Injury concern: Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen

Speaking to the official Arsenal magazine in an interview conducted before his latest injury in the 2-2 draw against Liverpool, Gibbs revealed his positive attitude to spells on the sidelines.

He said: 'Before that I had never really had injuries, but in the next couple of years I had quite a few and it was really frustrating.

'I did my knee and rolled my ankle, and later on I had a hernia.

'However, I just got on with it and never really listened to any comments.

'I just knew the most important thing was that I got back and let people judge me on my football.'

Vermaelen, meanwhile, revealed he has taken inspiration from David Beckham's recent visit to Arsenal, where the former England captain trained ahead of his deadline day move to Paris St Germain.

'I didn't meet him for long, but I could tell straightaway that he's a very nice guy and a fantastic professional,' Vermaelen wrote in the Arsenal matchday programme.

'That was obvious in a single day – he was working after the session, doing drills and keeping himself fit, and you have to give him a lot of credit for being in such good shape at the age of 37.

'It is not easy to get to the top and stay there as he has done – you have to work really hard every single day, and if young players can see that then it is an inspiration for them.

'Training with him was a special moment for me, too. Like Beckham, I certainly want to play football for as long as I can – it's partly about how your body feels, and about luck too, but in my opinion football is the best career there is so you want to enjoy it to the maximum.'

Chelsea have been dealt a huge blow in the title race with goalkeeper Petr Cech sidelined by a groin injury.

Reserve stopper Ross Turnbull stepped in for Cech at half-time during Chelsea's 2-1 victory over Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday.

The Blues are currently unsure how long Cech will be kept out for, with further tests needed to determine the recovery period.

Turnbull, who was relatively untroubled during the 45 minutes he played against Everton, is likely to start on Wednesday against Queens Park Rangers.

The 27-year-old's only appearance prior to Sunday this season was in Chelsea's 6-0 victory over Wolves in the Capital One Cup.

Cech said after the game: 'I think it was in 40th minute when I was punching the ball away and when I jumped I felt pain in my right groin.

'I finished the half knowing I would not be able to continue after the break. We will see how serious it is. We will know more after the medical check that I undergo tomorrow.'

Chelsea's back-up keepers, Turnbull and Henrique Hilario, are unsuitable to replace Cech over a long period of time.

The club have highly-rated Belgian stopper Thibaut Courtois on loan at Atletico Madrid and if Cech's injury proves to be severe they could recall him.

Courtois is likely to fight for the No 1 shirt at Chelsea next season with both Turnbull and Hilario making way.

A British ice hockey star has made a miraculous recovery after suffering a gruesome facial injury when he took an ice-skate blade to the face in a competitive match on Saturday.

The 24-year-old Belfast forward Craig Peacock was left with blood pouring from his lip on to the ice in the clash between the Belfast Giants and Fife Flyers, which Fife won 4-1.

Peacock had to be helped off the ice with a gash under his nose after catching the skate of Fife player Bobby Chaumont.

Peacock had been racing with Chaumont for the puck, but the young forward’s momentum forced the Fife man over the boards around the edge of the rink.

As Chaumont’s feet were sent into the air, the bottom of his skate connected with Peacock’s face, leaving a deep cut just above his lip.

The young forward recovered quickly, despite needing 29 stitches to patch up the gruesome wound, and said that he expects to be playing with the Giants again by Friday night.

It's the forward's fourth season playing with the Belfast Giants, after having won the English Premier League Cup with the Peterborough Phantoms

The 24-year-old said that he had no idea how serious the injury was until he made it back to the changing rooms, as he had broken his nose earlier in the week and assumed it was bleeding again.

‘When I got back into the locker room I looked in the mirror and it was a bit of a shock to see the cut,’ he said.

The Belfast star admitted that it could have been a lot worse had the skate caught him in the eye or the neck.

It’s Peacock's fourth season playing for the Giants, and he was selected for Team GB after having excelled in his first season.

Peacock recently helped the national
squad top their pre-qualifying group for the 2014 Sochi Olympics as he
scored the first goal in a 2-1 victory over Japan.

He tasted success with the Peterborough Phantoms prior to joining the Giants, winning the English Premier League Cup and the League Championship.

In 2009 he was also awarded the prize for the most points scored by a player in the English Premier Ice Hockey League.

He praised the doctor, tweeting 'Doc did a great job…29 stitches later and I'm ok!' along with a picture of his swollen face.

Later he teased fans, tweeting 'Anyone got the stomach to see a before pic' before adding the picture, warning supporters not to look if they had a weak stomach.

Later he joked 'Chicks dig scars right'

Rival Bobby Chaumont also joined the Twitter conversation, tweeting 'Hey man feel terrible about tonight..Hope everything is good..ps..great hit!

There were no hard feelings though, as Peacock replied 'no worries mate, freak accident, just one of them things! Last time I try to put you over the boards tho haha!'

The Fife Flyers team also tweeted their concern, saying 'Would like to wish @peaks71 well after a nasty looking injury. The results were not nice look. Hope you're ok Craig.'

The next morning he seemed to be feeling the injury a little more, tweeting 'Once again thank you all for your messages and wishes! Feeling a bit tender this morning but im doing alright!'

Lionel Messi has surpassed Gerd Muller's record of 85 goals for club and country in a calendar year after scoring twice in the opening 25 minutes for Barcelona against Real Betis.

The Argentinian, who started the match on 84 goals, required just 15 minutes to break the deadlock and equal the record.

Collecting the ball on the inside right channel, he drove diagonally into the penalty area, beating three defenders before picking out the bottom corner.

His 86th arrived ten minutes later in a move he started and finished before firing the ball into the same corner.

Messi has also become Barcelona's all-time leading goalscorer in La Liga, with his tally now standing on 192, two ahead of Cesar Rodriguez.

Messi has been in hot pursuit of Muller's record, set in 1972 when he scored 85 goals for Bayern Munich and West Germany in all competitions.

Vettel could be stripped of title as Ferrari consider appeal over alleged illegal move

UPDATED:

22:58 GMT, 28 November 2012

Sebastian Vettel's world title could be in serious jeopardy after it emerged Ferrari are considering lodging an appeal with the FIA over an illegal overtaking manoeuvre by the Red Bull driver during Sunday's chaotic season ending Brazilian Grand Prix.

Footage circulating on YouTube appears to show triple drivers' champion Vettel overtaking Toro Rosso driver Jean-Eric Vergne under yellow flag conditions in the early laps of the rain affected race at Interlagos.

Overtaking is outlawed under such a
caution by race stewards and usually results in the guilty party being
handed a drive-through penalty during the race. However, in cases where
the infringement is not spotted prior to the chequered flag, the
customary punishment is 20 second penalty handed out retrospectively.

Vettel finished sixth in the race while Ferrari's Fernando Alonso came home in second meaning he was beaten to the drivers' title by just three points by his Red Bull rival.

However, should Ferrari choose to lodge an appeal against the result with motorsport's world governing body, they have until Friday to do so, then Vettel could be demoted to eighth place if a time penalty is applied.

Such a dramatic outcome would see
Alonso crowned champion for a third time by a solitary point. Vettel
staged a remarkable recovery to take the crown in the spectacular season
finale after a first lap collision with Bruno Senna left him dead last.

Suspicions of illegality in passing moves on an HRT backmarker and Kamui Kobayashi of Sauber proved unfounded but it is the footage of Vettel's move on Vergne, who drives for Red Bull's sister team, which is being forensically examined by Ferrari's top brass who spent Wednesday afternoon lock in talks at their Maranello headquarters.

A Ferrari spokesman would only confirm that: 'Anything that threatens the credibility of the championship has to be examined.'

Speaking
after clinching the drivers' championship for third time in successive
years, Vettel spoke out about the 'dirty tricks' Red Bull's competitors
had used to derail his title charge.

The remark was taken by most observers to be in reference to Ferrari's decision to sabotage Felipe Massa's gearbox at the penultimate race in Austin in order to boost teammate Alonso's grid position.

In addition, Red Bull have had to alter their car on numerous occasions this season after complaints by rival teams regarding the legality of their 2012 challenger's design.

Meanwhile, Alonso tweeted after the race seemingly questioning the manner of Vettel's comeback in Brazil, posting: 'I have no miracles, I make the correct laws my miracles.'

Terry set for Chelsea return within weeks after rapid recovery from nasty-looking knee injury

|

UPDATED:

20:51 GMT, 27 November 2012

Chelsea defender John Terry is on course to make a speedy recovery from his knee injury and could be fit in time to play in the FIFA World Club Cup next month.

The Blues skipper suffered a nasty-looking injury during Chelsea’s draw against Liverpool two weeks ago.

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez slipped while running at Terry and fell awkwardly on the 31-year-old’s leg.

But the former England international only sustained minor damage to the medial cruciate ligament in his right knee, even though it was initially believed Terry could have been out for the season.

The centre back has made rapid progress since being carried off during the 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge and Chelsea have confirmed that he could be fit by next month.

According to the Evening Standard, Terry told friends that he was happy with his recovery rate after taking part in a training session before the visit of Manchester City on Sunday.

Terry is set to miss tomorrow's west London derby against Fulham but there is a remote possibility that he may be in contention for the West Ham game on Saturday or Chelsea’s final Champions League group game against Nordsjaelland next week.

Terry is keen to be back in the squad as quickly as possible to help Rafa Benitez get the Blues’ season back on track.

Roberto Di Matteo was sacked last week after a downturn in the team's form, which culminated in a 3-0 defeat against Juventus last week, leaving them on the brink of elimination from the Champions League.

When fit again, Terry is likely to slip back into the heart of Chelsea’s defence. Benitez’s first game in charge, a drab 0-0 draw with Manchester City, yielded the European champions’ first clean sheet in 11 games.

The Spanish manager was booed by the home crowd who were dissatisfied with the knee-jerk sacking of Di Matteo, who guided Chelsea to lift the FA Cup as well as the Champions League last season.

Benitez’s compatriot Juan Mata knows how much work Chelsea have ahead of them to win more silverware this campaign.

He said: ‘The next few months will be crucial in every competition. We want the best for Chelsea and, as we did when [Andre] Villas-Boas was sacked and Robbie came, we will work hard with Rafa Bentez, our new manager.’
