Dude, is that your real hair

Watch the first Nike advert featuring both new signing Rory McIlroy and original superstar Tiger Woods.

Rory McIlroy took a major step to becoming the United Kingdom's first billion-dollar sportsman after he was officially unveiled as a Nike athlete.

At a press conference in Abu Dhabi filled with glitz and glamour, the Northern Irishman, 23, signed a $25million-a-year (about 15.5m) contract that, alongside tournament earnings and appearance fees of similar magnitude, could see him break the 10-figure earnings barrier before he finishes his glittering career.

Jack Nicklaus was 46 when he won his last major and the legendary Arnold Palmer is still raking in $20m (about 12.4m) a year in sponsorship despite now being in his eighties.

If McIlroy can avoid the scandals that have affected other Nike athletes such as Tiger Woods and Lance Armstrong and keep his form, that gargantuan billion-dollar figure is clearly within range.

McIlroy was welcomed into the fold by fellow Nike superstars Wayne Rooney, Roger Federer and Woods himself. Messages of support from the trio were played on a big screen behind where McIlroy and Cindy Davis, president of Nike Golf, were sitting.

No details of the Nike deal have been revealed but the initial contract is believed to be worth up to $25m a year and could run for a decade. That equates to around $68,000 (over 42,000) a day but McIlroy vowed not to let the staggering sums of money distract him from his game.

Rory the cleaner's son mops up

Read Derek Lawrenson's verdict on the sponsorship deal that everyone is talking about…

'I don't play golf for money, I am well past that,' he said. 'I am a major champion and world No 1, which I have always dreamed of being, and I want to keep on living the dream. If I haven't won another major by the end of this year I am going to be very disappointed.'

McIIroy's megabucks deal heralded what promises to be a momentous week in Abu Dhabi, with Europe's Ryder Cup captain due to be announced on Tuesday.

The Holywood star reiterated his backing for Paul McGinley but there are plenty of whispers that the 15-man Tournament Players' Committee, who have the vote, might go for Scot Colin Montgomerie on home soil at Gleneagles next year.

If that happens, McIlroy might find himself leading a revolt among the men who were at Medinah.

Lionel Messi turned down a blockbusting move to an unknown Russian club after a bid of 205million triggered his release clause.

The club, thought to be Anzhi Makhachkala, then offered a blockbusting 460,000-a-week deal to the Argentine superstar, a massive 24m a year after tax, according to The Sun.

Sloppy Swans must stop set-piece slip ups, admits boss Laudrup after they ship top flight record 12th goal

Michael Laudrup has admitted he is concerned by Swansea's inability to defend set-pieces and has vowed to tackle the issue.

The Swans share with Aston Villa the dubious distinction of having conceded the most amount of set-piece goals in the Barclays Premier League this season.

Patrice Evra’s header from Robin van Persie’s first-half corner in the 1-1 draw against Manchester United on Sunday was the 12th time they have conceded in such a way – accounting more than half the 23 Laudrup’s side have shipped.

It continued a worrying trend after Jan Vertonghen volleyed Tottenham’s winner from a Kyle Walker free-kick a week earlier, and Norwich scored two in a similar manner on December 8.

Laudrup pointed in mitigation to the height of three of three of the regular starters in his sleek, passing side – Leon Britton, Wayne Routledge and Nathan Dyer are all shorter than 5ft 7in – but insisted he is actively trying to address the issue.

He said: ‘We are trying to improve at set-pieces. Obviously players like Leon, Nathan and Wayne have the height they have and they are the type of players we need for our football.

‘It is a price we pay sometimes. But at set-pieces we have problems sometimes and we have to admit that. We want to improve.’

Swansea face basement club Reading on Boxing Day in what will mark the halfway point of the south Wales club’s second Premier League campaign.

They have already racked up 24 points and reached the Capital One Cup semi-final in a season where ‘the objective is survival’ and that is in no small part down to the revelatory form of Michu.

Spain manager Vicente del Bosque has confirmed the forward will win his first international cap in the February 6 friendly against Uruguay in Doha after going to the top of the Premier League’s scoring charts with his 13th goal of the season against United.

However, Laudrup admitted he fears the 26-year-old will burn out if he is not rested soon.

He said: ‘We have to find that balance because nobody can play 90 minutes in every game. It is my job to make the decision on when to rest people.

‘I said it to my squad a few weeks ago that we need everybody to be ready because in December, January and February because we play in two cups and eight or nine league games in the League. It is the most crucial point of the season.’

'Tis the season to put on a few pounds, let the stitches heal the wounds, to soothe the swollen hands, take the weight off the feet without every second counting… and confer the annual awards.

Anno Domni 2012 began with Muhammad Ali further defying Parkinson’s by reaching his landmark 70th birthday. It ended with Manny Pacquiao being knocked flat out of contention as pound-for-pound king by the anatomically reconstructed 39-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez.

Between those ring-posts, history was made…

BOXER OF THE YEAR

Sergio Martinez achieved, at last, the recognition and the world title of which he had been deprived for too long.

The Argentine matinee idol, having begun his year by knocking out our own Matthew Macklin, went on to beat Son of Chavez and thus overcome the boxing politics in which he had been unfairly entangled.

He did so with a master-class for 11 rounds of dazzling style against Julio Cesar Jnr, capped off by his courageous recovery from a 12th round knock-down. The classic middleweight division found its latest successor to Sugar Ray Robinson.

BRITISH BOXER OF THE YEAR

Carl Froch, the outstanding fighter of his UK generation, gritted his teeth to come back from last year.s disappointing Super Six Final defeat by the accomplished Andre Ward.

He did so in commanding fashion, putting an end to the fancied Lucien Bute's unbeaten record to regain a world super-middleweight title.

A similar stoppage blitzing of Yusaf Mack not only gave the Nottingham Cobra a rousing homecoming but served notice on Ward and Mikkel Kessler that he intends, in 2013, to avenge the only two defeats of his warrior career.

WOMAN BOXER OF THE YEAR

Nicola Adams took her indelible place in the record books by becoming the first female to win Olympic gold in the boxing ring.

The wee lass from Leeds lit up London 2012 with her sunshine smile and lifted the roof off the cacophonous ExCel Arena by decking Chinese legend Can Can Ren en route to winning her historic final.

FIGHT OF THE YEAR

Manny Pacquiao v Juan Manuel Marquez*.

The asterix is there because the veteran Mexican idol had turned to a self-confessed former Olympics steroid provider to build him up physically in his desperation to secure a result against the legendary PacMan at the fourth attempt.

Marquez consistently denied using drugs to turn himself into a mini Arnold Schwarzenagger. So while there is no boxer of the year accolade from me, there is no denying that the Las Vegas night in its own right, with both men floored before Marquez landed his Hail Mary punch as Pacquiao appeared to be on the point of sixth round victory, was the thriller of 2012.

TRAINER OF THE YEAR

Rob McCracken not only brought Froch back from the professional brink to a third world title but also guided Team GB’s boxers to a rich medal haul at London 2012.

The first part of that double act has set up Britain's top prize-fighter for block-busting world super-middleweight title re-matches against Kessler and Ward in the coming 12 months.

The second part delivered not only Olympic glory but increased funding for this country’s amateur boxers.

SWANSONG OF THE YEAR

Ricky Hatton returned to the stage of pain for one last hurrah… and hurrah it was even though he over-matched himself after more than three years' absence by taking on an immediate past world champion.

We still love you: Ricky Hatton gave his fans once last chance to see him action, but was defeated

We still love you: Ricky Hatton gave his fans once last chance to see him action, but was defeated

The Hitman paid the price in the form of a crippling blow to that part of his body rendered most vulnerable by his past life of hard-boozing, his liver.

But he was ahead on the score-cards at the time and remains dear to the hearts of his army of fans, a sell-out 20,000 of whom sang him out of the ring for the last time and into a future as a trainer and promoter.

The sound of bells ringing in the ears – rather than the church steeples at this time of year – has stopped for the moment, but the memories linger on. Happy Christmas.

Alex Ferguson: I"d love to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Manchester United

He's still the Ron! I'd love to bring Cristiano back to Man United, says Ferguson

UPDATED:

22:17 GMT, 21 December 2012

Sir Alex Ferguson has suggested that Cristiano Ronaldo becoming a Manchester United player again might not be out of the question, ahead of the star's eagerly anticipated return to Old Trafford with Real Madrid in February.

Only last month, Ferguson described the player he sold to Real Madrid for a world-record 80million in 2009 as 'unbuyable'.

Hard work: Ronaldo stretches in Real training today

Hard work: Ronaldo stretches in Real training

The United manager is not about to read too much into speculation in Spain that Ronaldo feels unappreciated over the lack of progress in contract negotiations. Even though his deal still has three years to run, the Portugal star is understood to be asking for a new one worth up to 25m a year.

But if Ronaldo were ever to leave the Bernabeu, Ferguson hopes that he would consider a move back to United. 'You never know,' he said. 'I don't know when his contract finishes. He may want to go to another club at some point in his career and I'd hope he would want to come here. But that's a long way off.

'I'd love to see that, but it's fanciful thinking really. First of all, how much it would take to get him from Real Madrid and, secondly, I don't think there's any chance they would want to sell him.'

Ronaldo, too, has fond memories: 'It is thanks to Manchester United that I play for Real Madrid,' he said. 'Without them, I wouldn't be the player I am today. I still speak with Sir Alex Ferguson. I miss him a lot and I miss Manchester United.

'I felt very good there, it was like a family. I had six great years there and am still friends with my team-mates.' He will play United for the first time since 2003 as two of the world's most glamorous clubs face each other in the first knockout round of the Champions League.

Ferguson is proud of transforming the magician from Madeira into one of the two best players on the planet; one who, in the Scot's opinion, bears comparison with the greatest players in history.

Ferguson said: 'There are different forms of courage, but the courage to take the ball all the time is the best one. He's always had that.

'Great players have got that. Denis Law, George Best, Pele, Johan Cruyff, Eusebio: all the great players can do that. They take the ball, no matter the challenges.

'I've been very fortunate in having Scholes, Giggs and Cantona. He's certainly in that bracket.' Which begs the question, how are United going to stop him It was after Ronaldo tormented United in a friendly nine years ago that Ferguson's players urged him to sign the Sporting Lisbon teenager.

'I'm putting Giggs against him – he knows more about him,' said Ferguson. 'Giggs would love to play against him. We'll have a way.'

While many United fans still sing Ronaldo's name, others have not forgotten he never hid his desire to swap Manchester for Madrid.

Ferguson persuaded him to stay for another 12 months and believes supporters should just be grateful that they saw one of the greats play at Old Trafford for six years.

'It wasn't disloyalty because I got another year out of him when he wanted to go the previous year,' said Ferguson. 'He honoured that and was fantastic for us. He went with our blessing.

'I was sorry when he left, don't get me wrong, but he always had a hankering to go to Madrid in his career and we helped him on that way.

'My way of looking at it is we were lucky to have him for six years and the United fans would share that.

'One thing is for sure, he'll get a great reception when he comes to Old Trafford and quite rightly so when he comes on the pitch – after that, they can boo all they like!

'It will be a fantastic tie. We've not had a really good European game for quite a while, having not qualified last year,' Ferguson added. 'This is a big opportunity for United to kick on and step forward in European football again.'

Ferguson must attend to more mundane matters away to Swansea tomorrow and maintain United's lead over Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

'If we are top of the league on New Year's Day, you know fine well – and everyone else knows fine well – that we're going to be in the ballpark at the end of the season,' said Ferguson.

'We know there are going to be challenges. It could come from Chelsea, too, but City and ourselves will be battling it out.'

Sir Alex Ferguson has dismissed suggestions that Cristiano Ronaldo was disloyal to Manchester United and has promised him a warm welcome when Real Madrid visit Old Trafford in the Champions League.

It will be Ronaldo's first game back since he left United for Real in a world record 80million deal in 2009.

The Portugal star made no secret of his desire to swap Manchester for Madrid but Ferguson believes that United fans should be grateful they were able to keep him for six years.

Win proves I'm a contender! Groves believes he should be feared after Johnson demolition

George Groves insists his demolition of Jamaican veteran Glen Johnson at London's ExCel has identified him as a fighter to be feared by his super-middleweight rivals.

Groves defended his Commonwealth title with a wide points victory over a respected opponent whose 71-fight record includes wins against Roy Jones and Antonio Tarver.

It was only the 24-year-old's 16th contest, yet he succeeded in defeating Johnson more comprehensively than British rival Carl Froch, who secured only a majority decision in June last year.

'That performance will tell the rest of the division that I'm here, that I'm a contender and someone not just to keep an eye on, but to fear,” Groves said.

'I will give anyone in the world a decent fight and would beat a lot of the top guys. I believe that now I'm a world class fighter.

'Johnson has boxed at the highest level for a long time, and at light heavyweight as well. The good fighters he's beaten is impressive.

'I can look back at this year and say I've only had two fights, I've had two successful fights and have made big improvements.'

Injury has restricted Groves to just two outings this year and while he was hit too easily, his movement, accuracy and work-rate fully justified the 120-107 120-107 119-109 decision on the scorecards.

The one surprise was that he failed to become only the second man to stop the battle-hardened Johnson after Bernard Hopkins, although the 43-year-old was saved by the bell at the end of the sixth round.

'There were times when I was absolutely nailing him and 95 per cent of other super-middleweights would have gone, but he stood there,” Groves said.

'I genuinely thought I'd stop him. I didn't underestimate how good his chin was, but he can really take a punch.'

Promoter Frank Warren revealed that Groves and Billy Joe Saunders will be fighting again in London in February and tipped the former to win a world title by the end of 2013.

Rising star: Billy Joe Saunders moved to 16-0 with a win against Nick Blackwell

Rising star: Billy Joe Saunders moved to 16-0 with a win against Nick Blackwell

Saunders' rapid development continued with a unanimous points victory over former unlicensed fighter Nick Blackwell in the best contest of an entertaining bill.

Blackwell provided the 2008 Olympian with the toughest test of his 16-fight career and stalked down his opponent throughout, but Saunders' classier work saw him prevail 117-112 116-113 115-114 on the scorecards.

The win adds the vacant British middleweight title to his Commonwealth belt and while Saunders is far more advanced in his career, he covets a showdown with Chris Eubank Jr.

'Chris Eubank Jr is arrogant and I want to put him in his place. I didn't like his dad and I don't like him,' Saunders said.

'He's got nothing I want on, but I'd like to beat him because he's arrogant. He keeps calling people out but hasn't boxed anyone yet.'

The defeat was the second of Blackwell's 14-fight career, but the heavy underdog's gutsy performance and superb conditioning ensured he will challenge for British and Commonwealth honours again.

Liam Smith secured the vacant Commonwealth light-middleweight title with a comprehensive points victory over Steve O'Meara.

Jimmy Anderson joins Ian Botham on 528 wickets

Anderson joins the greats with wicket No 528 pegging him level with Botham

UPDATED:

22:25 GMT, 15 December 2012

If Jimmy Anderson could have chosen the perfect delivery with which to grab his personal share of England’s sporting history, this would have been close to it, and his reaction showed he thought so, too.

Standing one wicket shy of Sir Ian Botham’s record number of wickets in all international cricket for his country, the 30-year-old roared in to bowl the last ball of his 14th over of a long and thus far fruitless day.

Finding the swing and seam movement with which he had run through the Indian top order on Friday but only been able to tap into sporadically on Saturday, he speared an absolute snorter into the pads of left-hander Ravindra Jadeja and wheeled round just in time to see umpire Kumar Dharmasena raise a finger.

Achievement: Jimmy Anderson made his mark in the record books when he took his 528th wicket

Achievement: Jimmy Anderson made his mark in the record books when he took his 528th wicket

A leap in the air, followed by a punch of his clenched right fist and a howl of joy, Anderson was engulfed by his team-mates. No wonder.

At one stage it looked probable that England might go wicketless all day for only the fourth time ever, but that strike was Anderson’s fourth of the innings for 68 runs in 26 overs as India ended the third day on 297-8 in response to England’s 330.

In terms of the series, it was his 12th wicket at an average of 29.16, which includes the record ninth Test dismissal of Sachin Tendulkar. It was also his 46th strike of 2012, confirming him as the leading wicket-taker among the world’s pacemen since January 1. And it was his 288th Test wicket, bringing him well in range of England’s all-time top four — Botham (383), Bob Willis (325), Fred Trueman (307) and Derek Underwood (297).

Legend: Ian Botham also scored an impressive 5,200 Test runs

Legend: Ian Botham also scored an impressive 5,200 Test runs

His international career began 10 years ago on Saturday, on December 15, 2002, in a one-dayer against Australia in Melbourne. He has since added 222 one-day international wickets and 18 Twenty20 scalps, putting him level pegging with Botham on 528 wickets in all cricket for England, with power to add.

Most importantly for him and his colleagues and their efforts to cross the ‘final frontier’ of success in the sub-continent, in taking himself to the brink of greatness — at least statistically — Anderson improved the chances of rewriting an unwanted record by becoming the first England team to win in India for 27 years.

And how they needed it. Where Anderson had made England look almost unstoppable in rifling out Virender Sehwag, Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir on day two as India slid to 71-4 overnight and a deficit of 243, they had made just one breakthrough before Anderson intervened.

In a painstaking fifth-wicket stand, Virat Kohli and skipper MS Dhoni dug in a pitch deader than the dodo and, with less than an hour left, it seemed India might bat all day without losing a wicket, a feat last achieved against England by Australia at Trent Bridge in 1989.

Kohli’s 343 minutes of resistance ended when he played outside a rare turning ball from Graeme Swann which would have clipped leg stump, and England celebrated as though as they had won the series there and then.

You could hardly blame them, because they had waited 84 overs for something to shout about.

Tale of the day

Dhoni has 99 problems
MS Dhoni became the 15th player to be run out on 99 in Tests and the first captain. Michael Atherton, before he was England skipper, knows how Dhoni feels, having been dismissed the same way against Australia at Lord’s in 1993 (right), slipping after being sent back by Mike Gatting.

Bresnan on a dry run
At the close yesterday, Tim Bresnan had not taken a Test wicket in 74 overs. His last success was at Headingley in August, when he dismissed South Africa captain Graeme Smith. After going wicketless in games at Lord’s and Ahmedabad he toiled away for 26 overs in Nagpur without joy.

Kohli grinds it out
Until now, century-maker Virat Kohli had endured a shocking series, failing to score above 20 in his first six innings in the series. The 295 balls he faced in scoring 103 in Nagpur beat the total of 240 he had encountered in the rest of the series put together.

Gower’s mark is safe
As England took drinks after a fruitless 76 overs, they must have thought they might go a day without a wicket. It has happened three times to them; in 1960 against West Indies in Bridgetown, 1982 against India in Chennai and under David Gower in 1989 against Australia at Trent Bridge.

Then, after Anderson dismissed Jadeja at 288-6 to ensure Dhoni now had to shoulder even more of the burden of dragging his side into a first-innings lead, up stepped captain Alastair Cook to set them alight.

In his first series as full-time captain, Cook has already done more than enough with the bat, of course, but he may look back on the brilliant direct hit with which he ran out Dhoni on 99 by no more than an inch with as much satisfaction as he feels for any of his three centuries.

Dhoni had been stuck in the nineties for 17 overs and the best part of an hour when he pushed a ball from Anderson to the right of Cook at midwicket.

He might have thought, wrongly, that, as Cook bats left-handed, the ball had gone towards his weaker arm.

More likely, though, is that he was
desperate for a single to take him to the century that would have been
the perfect response to those critics calling for his head. He probably
wasn’t thinking of anything much else as he set off, before veering
slightly to avoid the bowler.

When
Cook’s throw hit the target from side-on and Dharmasena called for the
television umpire to judge the call, the cheers of the crowd turned
instantly to stunned silence. Not bad for a man whose appointment as
one-day captain prompted former England skipper Mike Atherton to object
on the grounds that he was a ‘donkey’ in the field.

When
replays showed the airborne bat had come to ground on the line rather
than over it as the ball struck, all the noise was coming from the Barmy
Army.

And they hit the roof
when Swann fizzed one past Piyush Chawla’s outside edge into off stump
to leave India on 297-8 at the close. That meant that England were still
33 runs ahead and just two days of solid cricket away from crossing
what Cook calls the ‘final frontier’.

If they manage it, after having being so badly pummeled in the first Test in Ahmedabad, this team will feel it may be the start of something big.

For Anderson, the record-equalling wicket was the continuation of something that could end up being huge.

New records to come

The Brazil international’s team currently sit in fifth in the division and are already 13 points off the league leaders Manchester United.

But Sandro thinks that if they work hard enough and other teams slip up, Andre Villas-Boas’ side can prise the title away from either United or champions Manchester City.

Spurs defeated United at Old Trafford earlier in the season, and were beaten by a late Edin Dzeko goal at City, but both sides still have to travel to White Hart Lane later in the season.

‘It’s very open,’ he told the Daily Mirror. ‘Every team has weaknesses. Every team loses. Manchester City have lost their unbeaten record, we’ve gone up to United and won there.’

He added: ‘Both Manchester teams can come to Tottenham and lose here. I’ll fight for the title while there is a possibility of winning. My ambition, every player’s ambition, is to live for success, for trophies.’

‘While we can still catch the teams above us we are going to play for the title. It’s an ambition, a dream. We just have to fight for it.’

Dylan Hartley is in hot water again, this time for striking rival hooker Rory Best in Friday’s Heineken Cup clash between Northampton and Ulster.

The England hooker, who has served lengthy bans for gouging and biting offences in his turbulent career, is set to face a disciplinary hearing this week after he was cited by French match commissioner Jean-Claude Legendre.

This latest charge is not as serious but his poor disciplinary record might well lengthen his ban if he is found guilty. The International Rugby Board recommends a suspension of from two to eight weeks, depending on the severity of the incident.

Immediately after Northampton had lost
25-6 to Ulster, Hartley denied that he had been involved in any
incident. But TV pictures highlighted how the pair enveloped each other
after Best had tackled Hartley in the 64th minute.

The flare-up ended when the Northampton player lashed out at the Ireland star, who was not hurt.

Hartley missed England’s autumn games
because of a knee injury and only returned to action two weeks ago. The
injury followed his eight-week suspension last April after he was found
guilty of biting Ireland flanker Stephen Ferris on the arm in England’s
Six Nations win.

Hartley, 26, has been backed by
England forwards coach Graham Rowntree, who said the hooker had worked
hard to improve his discipline following a 26-week ban for a gouging
offence against Wasps players James Haskell and Jonny O’Connor in April
2007.
