It's great to see likes of Lambert reach the top level, says Moyes

David Moyes hopes Rickie Lambert does not score his 11th goal of the season when Everton visit Southampton tonight but the Toffees boss is encouraged to see the striker doing so well.

Lambert has spent most of his career in the lower leagues with the likes of Macclesfield, Stockport, Rochdale and Bristol Rovers but has had no trouble adjusting to the top level.

The 30-year-old's 10 goals make him the joint leading English goalscorer in the Barclays Premier League along with Tottenham's Jermain Defoe, leading to talk of a possible England call-up.

Moyes said: 'Like a lot of the Southampton players who have moved up through the leagues, he's done very well.

'Some of them have gone the distance with them, some of them have joined in as they've gone along but I think they've tended to keep the soul of the club.

'Rickie Lambert's been a great goalscorer through his career and he continues to do so.'

Players working their way up to the top flight through the leagues have become increasingly rare, but Lambert is not the only one.

Norwich's Grant Holt and Adam Le Fondre of Reading have both made their mark at Premier League level, and Moyes hopes there will be others following in their footsteps.

He said: 'I think it's something we have to try to embrace because if not we're going to be going abroad trying to buy all the players, or maybe clubs such as Everton and Southampton have got them all in their academy systems now.

'I'm now quite sure that's true and I do think it would be great if we were still able to bring in players from the lower leagues.

'We went and got Tim Cahill, Andy Johnson and Joleon Lescott and I think people got the message that we're trying to pick up players from lower down if we can.'

Tonight's match will be the first for new Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino, who replaced Nigel Adkins on Friday following his surprise sacking.

Adkins was hugely popular and the decision will have shocked fans and players alike, but Moyes does not think it will make his side's task easier.

The Scot said: 'It's a really difficult one to judge because I actually think Southampton have been playing quite well. I'm not quite sure what effect it will have on the players but when you get a new manager you get on with it.

'I don't think players mope around too long about the manager, and I mean that with real respect for Nigel, but I think players just get on with their job. I would expect them to do that and it will be difficult.

'I don't know what the atmosphere will be like, I would have expected the supporters to have probably been in Nigel's camp because of the work he'd done there.'

Manchester United manager Sir Alex
Ferguson has revealed a softer side ahead of his biggest selection
headache of the season against Tottenham.

Ferguson will explain privately to
players left out of the mouthwatering game at White Hart Lane why they
haven't been included. He says the days of simply pinning up the
teamsheet without any discussion are over.

Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Shinji Kagawa are all fit to start for United at White Hart Lane but Danny Welbeck's man-of-the-match performance against Liverpool last weekend means Ferguson is loathe to drop the England youngster.

United's injury worries in defence have also eased with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic available to compete with fitagain Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, who were outstanding in the midweek FA Cup win against West Ham when United kept only their third clean sheet at Old Trafford since September.

Ferguson said: 'You want to be able to say to someone “I'm leaving you out not because you did not play well last week – you played great – but I'm going to pick a different team”.

'It's difficult to leave players out. You have to speak to them. The days of just putting a team up on the notice board are gone. The stats of players' running performance over the last 10 years have soared. It's amazing. As the game gets quicker and more energy gets spent you have to think more about picking your teams. Players do accept being left out now. I'm not saying they enjoy it but they handle it not too badly.'

Rooney and Van Persie could start together for the first time since Rooney was injured in mid-December. United will be keen to avenge a 3-2 home defeat by Spurs in September. Spurs have never completed the League double over United in the Premier League era.

Danny Graham is close to a 5million move to Sunderland but if he signs for the Wearside club it will be a controversial move to say the least.

The Gateshead-born striker supports Newcastle and in an interview conducted during his time at Watford was asked who he would support if his club ceased to exist.

Graham replied: 'Put it this way. I would stay as far away from Sunderland as I could. It would probably have to be Gateshead.'

Many Black Cats fans were already upset about the move for the 27-year-old attacker and the old interview snippet being dug up and posted on Twitter will not go down well at the Stadium of Light.

One Sunderland supporter posted on a fans forum: 'Danny Graham is a born and bred Mag and he really doesn't like us. If he signed he would just take the p*** like all the others have.

'This, like ALL other craa [slang for Newcastle supporter] supporting players we have had in recent history, will end in tears.'

Another added: 'I just think Danny Graham is a disaster waiting to happen.'

Sunderland need to bring in a new forward to ease the burden on Steven Fletcher. The former Wolves hitman has the lion's share of their goals this season, with eight goals out of the club's 30.

LATEST SCORE
O'Shea 0 Waites 1 Have your say here

18.18: Waites with the darts in the third leg of the second set, and he's always too far ahead to be under any pressure. Waites goes 2-1 up.

18.16: O'Shea levels it up in the second set, with a double 10 finishing it off.

18.15: The Chelsea pensioners are in attendance. No personalities so far, from what I can see. You used to be able to rely on a few snooker players to make it, but with the Masters starting today, I'm not so sure any will be here.

18.14: Best leg of the match so far, with successive 180s in the middle of it. Waites misses a couple of doubles, but makes no mistake with double four and goes one leg up in the second set.

18.12: Scott Waites wins the opening set.

O'Shea is not at the races in this fourth leg of the match, leaving Waites with six darts to make 42. He doesn't make the first three count, but with his fourth he hits double 16 and puts the first set on the board. He really does look determined here, does Waites.

18.10: O'Shea misses a chance with bullseye, and Waites takes full advantage, with a treble 16 and double eight finish seeing him break the darts.

18.09: This is bringing back nice memories of my own days at the Lakeside. It's always a fun night out, I remember when it was seen as really raucous in Frimley Green, but with the antics of the crowd up at Ally Pally these days, it seems positively innocent in Surrey.

18.07: Waites hits the first 180 of the final in the second leg, and is on a finish in no time. He misses a few doubles, before eventually nailing double six and levelling the scores.

18.05: Waites has a chance to win the first leg with a 170, but falls well short, O'Shea misses a chance with double 16, Waites then can't hit double 20, before O'Shea holds his nerve to pick off a double eight and make sure he holds with the darts.

18.03: We're under way, so we are. Both these men are going for their first title. Who will be picking up the famous old trophy in a couple of hours

Liverpool settle out of court with Tom Hicks and George Gillett

Liverpool settle out of court with ex-chiefs Hicks and Gillett over club sale claims

Hicks and
Gillett took their case against Broughton, Purslow and Ayre – and RBS –
to court, alleging that they conspired to sell the club at a reduced
price.

They claimed RBS and the Liverpool directors had deliberately blocked their attempts to refinance, allegations denied by RBS.

But after a lengthy and involved process led by Liverpool’s general counsel Natalie Wignall, a deal has been struck to bring an end to the legal action against Broughton, Purslow and Ayre.

The status of Hicks and Gillett’s case against RBS – whom the Americans claim were too actively involved in the sale process – remains unclear and no one at the bank was immediately available for comment.

Back to business: Now Liverpool can concentrate on the football

At a High Court hearing in October Mr Justice Peter Smith said it was a matter which ought to go to trial.

'There is in my mind a question as to whether or not RBS truly distanced itself from the sale process,' he said.

'In reality, what actually happened between April 2010 and October 2010 can only be discerned by a trial when the relevant players give evidence and their evidence is tested by cross-examination in the light of the contemporaneous documents.

'In my view, it would be wrong and a denial of justice potentially at this preliminary stage to deny the former owners an opportunity to have a trial on this issue.

'This matter should be brought to a speedy conclusion. I would wish directions to be agreed if possible with a view to this action… being heard early in 2013.'

Alex Ferguson electric car: Manchester United boss drives new Chevrolet Volt

He may have turned 71 today, but Sir Alex Ferguson has never been afraid to modernise, as his latest new signing shows.

The Manchester United manager has been purring about his latest investment, the energy-saving electric Chevrolet Volt.

When running in its near-silent electric mode the Volt has a range of around 50 miles, capable of getting Fergie to and from United’s training ground at Carrington.

‘I think the Volt is absolutely phenomenal,’ said Ferguson.

'A

it, so when I had the opportunity I said 'yeah I’m going to try it
because it’s the car of the future, really.

'I’m very pleased with it.’

An added bonus for the Scot is that the Volt only attracts a five per cent tax charge, meaning a higher rate taxpayer such as Ferguson will only have to pay 58.25 per month.

Ferguson isn’t the only man connected with United to enjoy cutting down on his carbon footprint.

It's never easy picking these teams – and I'm sure you'll tell me where I'm going wrong!

How can I possibly leave out the exciting and entertaining Santi Cazorla or the powerful and productive Marouane Fellaini Both would get into most teams, but I would argue I have better players and I need to have some balance too.

Joe Hart is, in my opinion, the best goalkeeper in the world, but he has not been in the best form – and nor has Manchester United's David De Gea. Stoke have been defensively excellent and their goalkeeper, who may well move to a bigger club soon, has been very good. And so has their captain, Ryan Shawcross.

Santi Cazorla

Marouane Fellaini

You're out: Sorry Santi, sorry Marouane… there's just no room in my team for you two!

And here's how it breaks down, team-by-team…

Stoke – 2 players
Manchester United – 2 players
Swansea – 2 players
Manchester City – 1 player
Everton – 1 player
Chelsea – 1 player
Liverpool – 1 player
Spurs – 1 player

If you had told me at the start of
the season, I would be picking a half-term team with more Stoke players
than Manchester City, Chelsea, Spurs or Arsenal, I would have asked for
the smelling salts.
Swansea too have two players, as do Manchester United.

There are no Arsenal players in my XI. No Wayne Rooney. No Sergio Aguero, or David Silva.
But my team has goals: Michu in midfield, Bale, Suarez and Robin van Persie in attacking positions and Michael Carrick to supply the passes.

I have two attacking full-backs, including the excellent Leighton Baines. Imagine Baines, Bale and Mata lining up for a free-kick.

So here's my line-up (4-3-3) …

Goalkeeper:
Asmir Begovic (Stoke)

Matt Prior phone call to Kevin Pietersen built bridges for reintegration

Prior: My phone call built the bridges for Pietersen's England reintegration

|

UPDATED:

22:00 GMT, 29 December 2012

At the height of last summer’s textgate affair, Kevin Pietersen’s phone had never rung colder.

Few in English cricket were prepared to call a man many believed had, by sending a string of derogatory messages to ‘close friends’ in the South Africa dressing room, betrayed captain Andrew Strauss and severely undermined the team’s carefully fostered morale.

While several England players were minded to wash their hands of the side’s most talented but highest maintenance player, wicketkeeper Matt Prior saw the bigger picture and called his troubled team-mate in an effort to thrash out the seismic differences few in the dressing room had seen coming.

Old friends: Prior (right) and Pietersen (left) patched things up over the phone

Old friends: Prior (right) and Pietersen (left) patched things up over the phone

It was a move that showed Pietersen he was still valued by his team-mates and cemented Prior’s position as the most inclusive – and, arguably, most important – member of the team.

‘If that situation arose another 100 times, I would phone Kev another 100 times,’ Prior said. ‘It wasn’t done for any other reason than that I saw a team-mate struggling and, as far as I’m concerned, that becomes the responsibility of the players.

‘If someone isn’t happy in the dressing room then you have to go out of your way to find out what the issue is and do as much as you can to make it right.

‘That might be a case of seeing a person’s point and saying: “You know what, mate You’re right”. Or it might be a case of being honest and saying: “You need to sort a few things out”.

‘Kevin and I are both pretty straightforward and honest guys who don’t mince our words. I think he was pleased to hear from me and, from what I’ve heard him say, I think he was pleased someone made the call.

Reintegrated: Pietersen was dropped following the Headingley Test last summer

Reintegrated: Pietersen was dropped following the Headingley Test last summer

‘It was a case of “what’s up buddy You
tell me and I’ll tell you”. It was a refreshing way to have a
conversation. Sometimes, you need to say tough things to your mates in
order for them to improve and, more importantly, for the team to move
forward.

‘We’d worked extremely hard under Strauss and Andy Flower to build the team culture and we got to a good place, No 1 in the world. But what last summer proved was how fragile that team spirit can be if you don’t look after it.’

Prior’s intervention saw England’s players begin a dialogue that eventually led to Pietersen being reintegrated after he was dropped for the final Test of the summer on disciplinary grounds.

The appointment of Alastair Cook as Strauss’s successor, after the decision of England’s most successful captain of all time to resign at the end of the South Africa series, also provided an opportunity to bring Pietersen back into the fold for the tour of India.

England were rewarded with a sublime innings of 186 in the series-altering second Test win in Mumbai and an overall contribution of 338 runs at 48.28 in the series.

Down Under: Prior is currently playing in the Big Bash tournament in Australia

Down Under: Prior is currently playing in the Big Bash tournament in Australia

But it was Pietersen’s off-field contribution which impressed Prior most.

‘Kevin was absolutely sensational,’ he said. ‘The public will see he hit 180 in Mumbai, which showed his class, but we all know how good he is and that he can play those match-winning innings.

‘He was fantastic talking to the young players and passing on his experience. Because he’d been to India more than anybody else, he also knew where to go and what restaurants to eat at. Little things like that are incredibly important on a tour to somewhere like India.

‘It wasn’t just Kev who had to make changes, everyone had to. We did that well and proved we’re again a tight unit and can move forward without having to talk about it any more.’

England’s one-day squad, minus the rested Pietersen and the out-of-favour Prior, leave for their five-match tour to India on January 2.

Prior, widely acknowledged as the world’s finest wicketkeeper batsman, remains desperate to reclaim both his one-day and Twenty20 shirt and is spending his time away from the Test team honing his skills in Australia’s Big Bash tournament.

Sir Alex Ferguson has praised Ally McCoist for the job he is doing at Rangers

In awe of Ally: Sir Alex hails McCoist on Mission Impossible

Sir Alex Ferguson last night saluted the managerial job Ally McCoist has masterminded at Rangers in the face of the toughest set of circumstances ever experienced by an Ibrox boss.

The legendary Manchester United chief, Britain’s most successful manager of all time, has been hugely impressed at how McCoist has handled his ‘Mission Impossible’ in the wake of the ‘disgraceful’ and ‘disastrous’ financial collapse of Rangers under shamed former owner Craig Whyte.

Ferguson has marvelled at how McCoist has emerged from the trauma of the club’s liquidation, and the loss of a team of star players, to build a side which now sits 12 points clear at the top of the Third Division, ahead of today’s trip to Hampden to face Queen’s Park.

Despite giving McCoist his own personal managerial seal of approval, however, the two-times Champions League winner and 12-times English Premier League champion does not believe the record Rangers goalscorer will receive the credit he deserves for his work in the Ibrox dugout amid the off-field turmoil.

‘I think the job that Ally McCoist has done at Rangers is fantastic,’ said Ferguson, who became embroiled in a war of words with Newcastle yesterday after offering a not-so-complimentary opinion on their club and manager Alan Pardew, describing him as a ‘hypocrite’.

‘What bigger examination could a Rangers manager ever get than being demoted to the Third Division, losing all his players — and then still being top of the league.

'Ally has done a fantastic job, but he won’t get the credit he deserves because if Rangers are not in European football, then they are not Rangers.’

Ferguson started his playing career at Queen’s Park between 1957 and 1960, before spending two years at Ibrox as a Rangers striker between 1967 and 1969.

He would have loved to accept an invitation to be at Hampden today and joked that despite Manchester United hosting West Brom, he was still tempted to make the trip back to Glasgow.
