Wilfired Zaha and Raheem Sterling must be committed to England, says Roy Hodgson

Commit to England cause or it's on your bike, says Hodgson as Three Lions boss issues fierce warning to Zaha and Sterling

UPDATED:

23:08 GMT, 13 November 2012

Roy Hodgson has warned Raheem Sterling and Wilfried Zaha that unless they commit to England he will pick players who are prepared to ‘cycle to training’ with senior stars.

Hodgson revealed here that he will hand international debuts to Sterling, Steven Caulker and Leon Osman against Sweden this evening, but he wants assurances from Sterling, Zaha and Carl Jenkinson that they see their future with his team.

The England manager was in combative
mood on the eve of the match, insisting that the trio – all eligible to
play for other countries – should feel honoured to receive his call.

Zaha has said he is torn between
playing for England and Ivory Coast after receiving a telephone call
from Didier Drogba, while Sterling could play for Jamaica and Jenkinson
for Finland.

called up I expect them to come running, get on a bicycle and cycle to
the training session if they have to. Then they shake hands with
everyone and tell everyone how happy they are to be there.

'All this nonsense about players
receiving phone calls and being enticed away… if they are going to be
enticed away, they will be enticed away. But if they are being enticed
away they are not the right player for us.

'We don't stand or fall on you. We

classified by FIFA as a non-competitive fixture and therefore a player

international clearance this morning, could also feature.

Jenkinson's team-mate Jack Wilshere
will be on the bench but the midfielder could play a part despite just
226 minutes for Arsene Wenger's side after a 17-month layoff.

Hodgson added: 'It is ridiculous to suggest Jack is not available for England and Arsene understands that too.'

Drogba bids to persuade Palace starlet Zaha to choose Ivory Coast over England

UPDATED:

23:00 GMT, 7 November 2012

Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba made a personal phone call to England Under 21 winger Wilfried Zaha to try to persuade him to play for his native country in the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Crystal Palace winger, who is 20 on Saturday, is wanted to represent the Ivory Coast in the tournament in South Africa next January.

He will be named in Stuart Pearce's England Under 21 squad for the clash with Northern Ireland at Bloomfield Road on Tuesday, but FIFA rules mean he is still eligible to represent the country he was born in.

Mark Clattenburg will be shocked and angry after Chelsea allegations – Graham Poll

Monday would have been a tense, nerve-jangling day for Mark Clattenburg. One of those days when you can’t think straight because the phone won’t stop ringing.

Of course you could turn it off but your bosses at the PGMO (Professional Game Match Officials) board might want you.

You also need the support of family, friends and colleagues. So you leave the phone on.

You can’t help but be drawn to the radio phone-ins. Surely someone is on your side.

You believe that you have done nothing wrong — but are fully aware that, in the heat of ‘battle’, inappropriate comments can come out.

I would never condone the use of ‘inappropriate language’. Indeed, foul language should not be uttered by a match official, ever. But it is. Sometimes you are pushed so far that it seems the only way a player will listen is if you swear and perhaps shock him. Very occasionally I did swear at players and justified it in my mind as the last resort to control them. Sometimes they threatened to report me, which can be worrying and affect your decision-making.

On the morning after the game, you try to recall how it all went wrong.

Clattenburg will have been wondering how a performance which was going so well suddenly blew up in his face. Monday will have been a very long day. He will have reviewed the DVD and seen how well he was doing until the 62nd-minute sending-off of Branislav Ivanovic; a routine dismissal conducted in textbook fashion. Detect the foul, assess the sanction, check with colleagues and administer in a calm and dignified way.

But then Was it a comment from a Chelsea player, disappointed that a team-mate was being dismissed and with that the chance of winning a key game possibly being taken away Was it the crowd reaction and the pressure that changed his attitude

Dismissed: John Terry is shown the red card by Graham Poll

Dismissed: John Terry is shown the red card by Graham Poll

Dismissed: John Terry is shown the red card

All these thoughts are analysed; the second sending-off will be replayed time and again. Knowing Mark, he will be justifying the decision. On Sunday night he was insisting he could justify the decision as it was his opinion that Torres was trying to get an opponent into trouble. That’s as maybe but with contact from Jonny Evans there must be doubts.

Given his history of dealing with controversy, Clattenburg will be able to deal with the fall-out from the game, his decisions and their consequences. However, the allegations that were made afterwards will be a whole new experience for him.

If he is innocent, he will be livid and getting his statement prepared to submit to the FA. He will be thankful that the referee communication system was in place and operating well. It clear that Clattenburg referred to his assistant Mick McDonagh just before the Ivanovic dismissal and he will be relying on the fact that the ‘open mic’ will mean every word will have been heard by both assistants and the fourth official Mike Jones.

They choose between the same ‘open mic’ or a ‘push to talk’ system requiring them to activate the system by pressing a button. The referee has no choice. And that will be Clattenburg’s defence.

That’s the way it was for me in 2006, when I was accused of telling players that I would ‘sort them out’ and ‘teach them a lesson’.

Joint effort: Branislav Ivanovic was sent off after Clattenburg talked to his assistant

Joint effort: Branislav Ivanovic was sent off after Clattenburg talked to his assistant

I refereed Tottenham v Chelsea in November 2006. Spurs won 2-1 and I sent John Terry off for two cautionable offences. After training the next day Terry, Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard claimed I had told them I would sort them out after their unacceptable behaviour in the midweek Champions League game against Barcelona.

I was contacted by the FA to provide a statement in response and they then looked into whether I would be charged. I felt like the person on trial, even though I had done nothing wrong. My three colleagues in that game all confirmed that they had heard no such comments and the allegations were withdrawn.

Chelsea players later retracted their claims on the club website.

Of course if all matches had the dialogue recorded — as it can be and indeed has been — then the authorities would know exactly what had and what had not been said.

When the communication system was introduced I was in favour of broadcasting it for fans attending, as is the practice at rugby games with ‘Ref Link’. This was blocked, but should be re-examined. The least that should happen is that recordings should be made and kept.

Danger: If Clattenburg abused John Obi Mikel his refereeing career is over

Danger: If Clattenburg abused John Obi Mikel his refereeing career is over

If Clattenburg is guilty of making inappropriate comments his career could be over. While Luis Suarez got an eight-game ban and John Terry four, Clattenburg knows that his would be a much tougher sanction which will effectively end his career.

This game, and the allegations which followed it, should be a watershed for referees to look at themselves and accept that by allowing the football field to be awash with foul language and abuse they are doing the game and themselves a disservice.

It is time for them to stand up and be counted, to dismiss all players who hurl abuse at them and never use such language, however tough the situation or extreme the provocation. Insist that all dialogue between the officials is recorded, if only for protection, and start to deliver a game we can all be proud of again.

Evander Holyfield to retire – Jeff Powell boxing column

Retired and broke, Holyfield still has hope… but it's help he really needs

Hard times: Evander Holyfield

Hard times: Evander Holyfield

As if pulling a blanket over his head to hide from a world of troubles, Evander Holyfield will finally retire from boxing on his 50th birthday this Friday.

One of the ring’s most heroic warriors has been defeated not by one of his catalogue of formidable opponents but by the wounds of self-inflicted poverty.

A fighting man who battled his way out of the ghetto to a $350million fortune will wake up this poignant morning in a grim apartment in down-town Atlanta.

From The Real Deal to Meals On Wheels.

This is the deepest cut of all those sustained by so many fighting men who have squandered fortunes. Even Mike Tyson only blew $250m.

Worse, Holyfield seems more afflicted than most by the punishment inflicted by so many sledge-hammer blows to the head.

Yet even though his speech became increasingly slurred as he fought on to an age when the majority of Americans are applying for their bus pass, he had still been hoping for one last world title shot, one last big payday to keep the wolf from the door a little longer.

Holyfield is not just calling it a day but waiting for a phone call which will not come. His potentially suicidal campaign for a farewell fling against Wladimir or Vitali Klitschko has fallen on ears that are more kind than unreceptive.

Holyfield says: ‘I believe I can beat either of them but I don’t have time now to fight my way back up the rankings and become the No 1 contender. There’s no point badgering them any longer. If I don’t get the call on Friday, I quit.’

The phone will not ring.

Bernd Bonte, manager of the Klitschkos, says: ‘Neither of the brothers will fight Evander. Both of them would destroy him at his age and they respect him far too much to do that. He is one of their idols and that means more than however much money the fight might make.’

The esteem in which Holyfield is held by the Klitschkos – in common with the entire fraternity of boxing – is hall-marked by the horde of memorabilia which he must surrender to auction next month.
As the only four-time winner of the world heavyweight title Holyfield surpasses The Greatest himself, Muhammad Ali.

That collection of WBC, WBA, IBF and Ring belts are to go under the hammer in Los Angeles, along with the wardrobe-full of gloves, shorts and robes worn in all the most significant fights in the career of one of the greatest boxers of all time.

Those treasures drip with the sweat of his epic trilogy with Riddick Bowe, the two controversial battles with Lennox Lewis and – along with his blood from that infamous biting of his ear – the sensational victories over Tyson.

Yet, although here is no telling how long his memory of the glory nights will remain sharp, the item from which he will part most reluctantly is the classic red Chevrolet manufactured in 1962, the year of his birth. It will feel as if his life has turned its full circle. Yet even if the fire sale raises its projected $5m, that will cover only half his $10m bankruptcy.

How could it have come to this Some of the answers are as old as the hardest game itself.
As the money poured in so, Holyfield took to gambling much of it away in the casinos of Las Vegas and Atlantic City. As all the pretty women flocked around so, he fathered 11 children with five of them as well as marrying and expensively divorcing three times.

As he took gratification from rising to fame through the old prejudices of America’s Deep South, so he flaunted his riches by buying Atlanta’s answer to Buckingham Palace.

The most frequently mentioned statistics of that estate are the 109 rooms and 17 bathrooms. When I visited him there he took most pride from having not one but two marble staircases sweeping through each end of the mansion. There were also houses in the grounds for his ex-wives and some of his children.

This was a monument to extravagance born of his pride at overcoming his humble beginnings but ultimately beyond his means to sustain.

In echoing contrast to that call which will never come the phone rang frequently there, to be answered by a servant saying ‘The Holyfield residence.’

Warrior: Holyfield will always be remembered as one of the all-time greats

Warrior: Holyfield will always be remembered as one of the all-time greats

His residence now is that small apartment in one of the less salubrious parts of his home city. The stately home was repossessed when he fell $14m behind on the mortgage repayments.

Now one of his daughters has won an order for immediate payment of $500,000 in maintenance arrears. Since he has no prospect of paying that or the $3,000 alimony due every month, he faces being held in contempt of court shortly.

What they cannot take from him is a phenomenal career. A Golden Gloves amateur title and Olympic bronze were followed by a reign as undisputed cruiserweight champion of the world.

After winning the heavyweight crown by defeating James Buster Douglas – who had shocked Tyson and the world in the greatest of all upsets – he went on to fight all the best of the big time. He alternated between dominating the division and coming back from set-backs – including suspension with a suspected heart defect – to keep reclaiming the title.

He would have been a five-time champion had he not been robbed of a decision by the giant Nikolai Valuev as recently as February 2010, at the age of 47. He has the satisfaction of bowing out as a winner, having defeated Danish veteran Brian Neilsen in what was to be his last fight.

Win or lose, the way Holyfield always went to war in the ring was thrilling and unforgettable.

Some may withhold sympathy, given the former scale of his wealth. Yet while his excesses wee a folly, the sadness is profound.

Tyson, who is finding ways to rebuild his life, is offering assistance and advice to the man whose lavish generosity has extended to forgiving Iron Mike for chewing off his ear.

Famously a born-again Christian, Holyfield says: ‘I still have hope.’

He also needs help. Hopefully, from all he people whose lives he has enriched with his courage, it will be forthcoming.

Don't be a Twit, Tyson…

Tyson Fury is a good guy at heart but he is in danger of embarrassing himself with his tirades against David Price, his British rival for future world heavyweight title glory.

Fury’s rantings at Price are starting to wander between the manic and banale and, frankly, do not merit being repeated in this column.

Price, having ended Audley Harrison’s career on Saturday night with another of his massive KOs to retain his British and Commonwealth belts, needs only to remind Fury that Fury vacated those titles rather than fight him.

Some of Fury’s other tweets of late have been riddled with expletives. It is time for him to stop twittering and concentrate at what he does best… which also happens to be knocking people out.

Sooner or later, he will get the chance to have his say against Price where it matters. In the ring.

Nonito nearly the new Pacquiao

Expectations that Nonito Donaire will eventually succeed his Filipino countryman Manny Pacquiao as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world rose on Saturday.

Donaire inflicted a stunning ninth round KO on Toshaki Nishkoka, Japan’s highly respected world champion against whom Britain’s Rendall Munroe failed in his one title bid thus far.

With Cuban defector Guillermo Rigondeaux – a two-time Olympic gold medallst – already holding another of the super-bantamweiight belts – the road to a world title will not be easy for the forthcoming winner of Munoe and Scott Quigg.

Enough is enough, Audley

Audley Harrison, in a statement which gives full credit to David Price for Saturday’s knock out, says he is still thinking about whether to retire.

For your own sake – at coming up 41 and coming out of hospital – don’t think about it for too long, Audley.

Anderson welcomes news Pietersen has begun 'reintegration' into England setup

James Anderson has welcomed the news that Kevin Pietersen has started the 'reintegration process' which could lead to the maverick batsman's return to the Test side for the tour to India.

After a phone conversation with Pietersen last week, Anderson is due to have further discussions with him in the coming days.

But the England bowler is already sufficiently encouraged by events to hope all parties can put the saga behind them and move forward.

Anderson said: 'I'm sure I'm in a similar position to everyone. We are coming towards an end to this and, hopefully, things have progressed well. They certainly seem to have done so between the ECB and Kevin.

'I think everyone involved wants a line drawn under it. We have a huge tour to India coming up and we just want to get on with that.'

Pietersen is due to take the next step of trying to clear the air with his team-mates either by phone or by flying back for face-to-face meetings in England between matches with Delhi Daredevils at this month's Champions League commitments.

Should those planned talks bear fruit, England team director Andy Flower has been authorised to recommend Pietersen be given the chance to restart his international career by inviting him to join the pre-Indian tour training camp in Dubai as soon as his Champions League involvement is over.

The way would then be open for him to play in the first Test against India in Ahmedabad, starting on November 15.

Anderson also confirmed he would be honoured to accept the England vice-captaincy should he be invited to fill the vacancy created by Alastair Cook's promotion to succeed Andrew Strauss as Test skipper.

'Of course, if the chance came along and the job was offered I would love to take it,' said Anderson.

'It would be a privilege and I would be delighted and honoured to accept it. Who wouldn't

'One thing Andy Flower has always done is try to get all the players to take on the responsibility of thinking as a captain.

'When Andrew Strauss was in charge he had a number of players offering opinions and support, and everything was listened to. That's not going to stop now.

'If one person is given the job, it won't mean everyone else shuts up, and whoever is chosen, it would not be an issue with the other candidates.'

The Football Association will not ask John Terry to submit his mobile phone records before appearing at the hearing into the racist allegations against him.

Terry has been charged by the FA with using 'abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour' towards QPR's Anton Ferdinand, including 'a reference to ethnic origin and/ or colour and/or race'.

It was thought that the phone records could shed some light on what happened that day, even though they were not used in evidence when Terry was acquitted of a racially aggravated public order offence at West London Magistrates' Court in July.

As it remains a relatively minor offence in the eyes of the law, the Metropolitan Police were not able to seize Terry's phone records or those of Ferdinand or other witnesses.

But it was believed that an FA Independent Regulatory Commission could have requested the phone records in an attempt to better understand what happened on the pitch and afterwards in the dressing room area at Loftus Road on October 23.

Sportsmail understands, however, that the FA have no plans to make such a request.

Terry played for England against Moldova on Friday but it is believed he had become deeply disillusioned with the FA for deciding to press on with their case despite his acquittal.

A hearing that does not include his personal phone records as evidence would certainly be regarded as less confrontational by the Chelsea captain.

Newcastle ace Yohan Cabaye issues Eden Hazard warning

My mate Eden is a real Hazard, warns Newcastle midfielder Cabaye

Fantasy football 2012

Yohan Cabaye is hoping that a phone conversation with his former team-mate Eden Hazard does not return to haunt him.

The France midfielder was one of the close confidantes Hazard called when he was pondering his move to England over the summer.

Cabaye, who had a sensational first season with Newcastle, was Hazard's close friend at Lille, where the pair formed a formidable partnership. He knew the Belgian sensation was tailor-made for the Barclays Premier League.

'The Premier League will be good for Eden's progression,' Cabaye said in Athens this week.

'He had already won two times the French player of the year award. Everybody in France knows him, so the best way for him to improve again and to become one of the big, big players in the world – which he can be – was to move here.

'I don't have much doubt that he'll become one of the best players in the league, especially if he continues to play like he did last week.

'He is relaxed with the ball. Every time, just before he gets the ball, he knows what he is going to do with it. For me, he did against Wigan what he did for Lille on many, many occasions.'

Cabaye travels with his Newcastle team-mates for the evening's kick-off at Stamford Bridge with both sides enjoying winning starts to the season. 'I will speak to Eden before the game,' added Cabaye. 'I'm sure we will have a laugh and joke with each other and it will be the same on the pitch.

'He is my friend, so I will smile with him. I've played against him once before, when France played Belgium, and we drew 0-0 and it will be the same this time.

'I spoke to Eden before he joined Chelsea. He asked me about the Premier League. I told him that this league would be everything he expected and more.

'It has been for me. I'm happy to be at Newcastle.'

'Every day I'm happy about my choice and I want to keep going and keep working with Newcastle, to keep winning games, to stay near the top of the league and play in Europe, too.'

Cabaye was one of the players rested by Newcastle manager Alan Pardew for Thursday's Europa League play-off first- leg draw against Atromitos in Athens. Hatem Ben Arfa, Fabricio Coloccini and Demba Ba will be among those who return to a side which showed nine changes from the opening-day win over Tottenham.

Striker Papiss Cisse, who scored two at Stamford Bridge last season, was not so fortunate. Due to injuries to his back-up strikeforce, Pardew was forced to play the No 9 for 77 minutes in the intense heat of the Greek capital but Cisse can expect to play again at lunchtime on Saturday.

Chelsea need no warning about the 9million Senegal striker. His second strike in the May fixture was one of the most incredible goals Petr Cech has conceded yet it was no surprise to Pardew.

The Newcastle boss said: 'Papiss is a player we all love. He's a finisher but we have to create chances for him. If you feed him he will score.'

Cisse added: 'I'm a team player, obviously.

'I love to play. When I go on the pitch I have to say I just want to score goals. It's my favourite part of the game, seeing the ball hit the back of the net.

'I'm not too tired, I didn't run around too much against Atromitos.

'I feel good and ready for Chelsea. It's my job to score goals and I hope we can get the same result as last year.'

Daniel Purvis was crowned British senior all-around gymnastics champion for the third straight year after posting a huge score of 91.550 points in the final Olympic trial at Liverpool's Echo Arena.

The 21-year-old from Southport recorded clean routines on all pieces, including 15.750 on an outstanding floor programme, to give the selectors a timely reminder of his talents with the five-man British team for London 2012 due to be announced on July 4.

Top man: Purvis

Purvis said: 'It's brilliant to win the title again and with it being the final Olympic trial it's even more special.

'I felt good out there today and my routines were all clean so it's really encouraging looking ahead to the team selection.'

Sam Oldham claimed silver with 90.050, sealing second spot with a solid high-bar routine, with Daniel Keatings (90.700) particularly impressing on the parallel bars and pommel on his way to bronze.

'The event was really close between a lot of the top lads and with three of us scoring over 90 it again proves the amazing talent we have in the squad,' Purvis added.

'For me now it's all about waiting for that phone call and just hoping I'm confirmed for the team. My form over the year has been good so it's all looking really positive.'

Oldham and Keatings were equally thrilled with their medals.

'That was incredible – better than I could ever have hoped for,' Oldham said. 'To go clean on all pieces and take a medal is brilliant. I knew I just had to go for it today – it's the last chance to impress and I nailed it.'

Keatings added: 'I'm just so happy. The past couple of months have been really tough for me battling through injury but I've tried to stay positive and this was always the focus.

'I just hope I've done enough to get on the team, but with the talent in the squad I know it's going to be a close call.'

Kristian Thomas (89.550) slipped down to fourth after a fall on the high bars, with Max Whitlock (89.350) fifth and Ruslan Panteyleymonov (86.800) sixth.

McCoist was on the verge of quitting Rangers as Ibrox saga rumbles on

Ally McCoist has admitted he considered stepping down this week before deciding to remain as manager of Charles Green's Rangers.

McCoist was 'furious' after hearing second-hand reports that Green wanted to replace him.

The former Rangers striker decided to stay after a meeting with Green on Friday, but the Ibrox chief executive still faces a fight to get fans to buy into his newco club.

McCoist told the Daily Record: 'At first, when I was told there might have been a move to get me out my reaction was natural. I was furious.

'I did confront Charles Green about it on Wednesday. I was looking for answers and that meeting didn't end well.

'I was then left with no other option, but to contemplate my future believing that I wasn't part of the plans.'

After the talks with Green, McCoist said: 'I've reassessed my position and taken a step back from the brink. As things stand at the moment I am still manager.'

Green has faced pressure to sell his club to a consortium led by former Rangers manager Walter Smith and McCoist stressed that the future of his club was all that mattered rather than his future and his relationship with Green did not matter.

'So let's just see what happens but it must always be the right thing for Rangers,' he added.

McCoist was warned about his future by Dave King, who is a director of the original Rangers company, which was consigned to liquidation this week.

King claims Green said he would not
continue with a manager at the wage level McCoist is on, during a phone
call when he was asked to invest in the new company. But Green urged McCoist to stay on and dismissed the story as 'rubbish' after completing his 5.5million purchase of Rangers' assets and business on Thursday.

King has vowed to travel to Glasgow from his home in South Africa in the coming days to help Smith's consortium plan their potential bid to Green.

The Sevco consortium publicly hinted they would not accept anything less than 20million to immediately sell on the new company but many fans are holding off on buying season tickets as they back Smith.

However, one of Green's closest business partners claims the former Sheffield United chief executive will stand firm.

Mike McDonald, who was chairman at Bramall Lane and plans to invest in transfers with Rangers, told Sportsmail: 'Charles has saved the club. And look at the thanks he is getting.

'He has done exactly what he said he would do. And he can take the abuse, be in no doubt.

'Where were Walter Smith and his team when David Murray and Craig Whyte were running the club into the ground'

The takeover attempts come as the Scottish Premier League board prepare to meet on Monday, after next season's fixtures are published, to discuss an application from Green's Rangers to join the league.

Fourteen days' notice is required for the 12 clubs to meet to vote on the proposal, leaving July 2 as the likely date for the club's league status to be resolved.
