Fulham 2 Newcastle 1: Rodallega grabs rare win as Pardew's men slide towards danger

Alan Pardew passed two years in charge of Newcastle United on Monday night, but it will not be an anniversary the manager looks back on with particular fondness.

He tinkered with his formation and cajoled his players constantly, but yet another away defeat leaves the visitors only four places above the relegation zone.

It may yet get worse: they must play Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal before the turn of the year, while Sunderland, in 18th place, have a game in hand against Reading on Tuesday.

For Fulham, though, there is hope
again and, crucially, goals. Martin Jol’s side had gone more than five
hours without scoring before Steve Sidwell’s 19th-minute strike.

Even that was a little fortunate, as
the midfielder’s right-foot shot took a heavy deflection off Mike
Williamson and cannoned in off the underside of the bar. But a second
from Hugo Rodallega gave Fulham their first Premier League victory since
October.

The gloom, however, only increases for Newcastle, despite Hatem Ben Arfa scoring on his return from a hamstring injury.

‘I’m worried in that we’re not
picking up enough points,’ said Pardew. ‘The performances are much
improved, there’s more fluency about our attacking play, but it’s a
worry. We haven’t got enough points and we’ve got a tough run of games.
But if we keep working as hard as we did tonight, I think it will
change.’

Injuries have not been kind to Newcastle but there was little excuse for their defending.

Only a covering tackle from Danny
Simpson had prevented Alex Kacaniklic scoring after just 60 seconds,
while the manner in which Rodallega was allowed to chest down a Damien
Duff cross in the box after 17 minutes provided particular cause for
concern.

Newcastle had plenty of chances and
Sascha Riether, who was excellent at right back for the hosts, cleared
two shots off the line from Fabricio Coloccini and Demba Ba before Ben
Arfa’s goal.

But it could have been far worse for the visitors if Tim Krul had not performed so well.

They were continually exposed by
Fulham’s width, especially down the right. Duff’s two assists equalled
his tally in 68 appearances for Newcastle, while the home side’s
willingness to mix the odd long ball over the top with the attacking
guile of Dimitar Berbatov and Rodallega was impressive.

‘That was vital for us,’ said Jol. ‘I was so happy we scored first because that was our problem in the last couple of weeks.

'At 2-1 we should have scored two or
three. We showed some character but I’m pleased we finished it off.
After losing Clint Dempsey I’m very happy that Berbatov came to this
club. He’s an unbelievable player.’

Whisper it, but Berbatov not only
exhibited all the style and swagger we expect but he worked hard in the
absence of Bryan Ruiz, who has suffered a setback in his return from a
hamstring injury.

Pardew’s 4-3-3 formation left Berbatov with room to ‘orchestrate’, as he put it.

Newcastle were also exposed in
central midfield, with Sidwell and Chris Baird picking off passes
comfortably and protecting their back four. The visiting boss was forced
into a change after his side went behind, slotting Ben Arfa back into a
midfield four.

The Frenchman looked a little off the
pace in his first start for a month, but still took it upon himself to
embarrass Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer with a shot that found the
roof of the net after 53 minutes. It took a deflection off John Arne
Riise, but Fulham players were culpable of standing off Ben Arfa, and
were duly punished.

Jol’s side have thrown away 14 points from winning positions and it quickly looked as if would be a similar case.

But then Duff, booed throughout the
match by supporters of his former club, curled in a beautiful free-kick
from the right after 63 minutes. Rodallega eluded Coloccini with ease —
it was shocking defending from Newcastle and particularly their captain
— to give Fulham their first win in eight games.

They had to hold on in the final
minutes, however. Coloccini hit the bar with a stinging shot, substitute
Shola Ameobi attempted a right-foot effort and Jonas Gutierrez also
came close.

Fulham boss Martin Jol has hinted he may rival new Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp in a January move for Aston Villa striker Darren Bent.

Bent is expected to leave Villa after falling out of favour with manager Paul Lambert and QPR are the initial favourites to sign him.

Jol, who signed Bent for Tottenham in 2007, was asked if he would be keen to re-sign the striker and said: ‘You never know, but we have three good strikers in Berbatov, Petric and Kacaniklic. We could maybe have one more creative player but you never know.’

Meanwhile, Fulham, West Ham, West Bromwich Albion and Southampton are all monitoring goalkeeper Paul Robinson’s situation at Blackburn Rovers. Albion have concerns over Ben Foster’s groin trouble.

Rafael Benitez was booed off instead of on to the field tonight after Chelsea produced a second straight bore draw in the west London derby against Fulham.

Three days after Benitez's first game in charge of the Blues saw him endure a savage reception from his new club's supporters, he was unable to turn the jeers into cheers as they slipped further off the pace in the Barclays Premier League.

And, as on Sunday against Manchester City, they could have easily lost against a Fulham side who had the better of the chances and a striker in Dimitar Berbatov who completely outshone opposite number Fernando Torres.

David Luiz's skied free-kick was the
first shot at goal after 25 minutes, the creativity of the rested Juan
Mata becoming more and more conspicuous by its absence.

Some speedy football from Oscar
finally created a real chance just before the half hour but Torres's
weak shot on the turn from Cesar Azpilicueta's cross was straight at
Mark Schwarzer.

Benitez said yesterday Torres needed
to get down the gym and he was given a lesson in brute power moments
later by Berbatov, who forcefully shrugged off the recalled Oriol Romeu.

Torres' flimsiness aside, Chelsea were
beginning to get round the back and more than one cross prompted more
than one desperate lunge.

And after a goalless first half, there
was another crucial tackle shortly after the restart when Mahamadou
Diarra stopped Oscar finishing off Hazard's pass.

But Chelsea could have fallen behind
twice in quick succession inside 10 minutes, an errant offside flag
rescuing them after Berbatov perfectly timed his run on to Diarra's
flighted ball, and Petr Cech saving from John Arne Riise following a
flowing breakaway.

Ramires and Giorgios Karagounis both
sent shots too close to either goalkeeper before Mata finally arrived,
Ryan Bertrand making way.

Fulham sent on Chris Baird for Diarra
before Mata showed Chelsea what they had been missing with a corner
glanced wide by Branislav Ivanovic.

An increasingly-frustrated Ivanovic
was booked for disputing a free-kick, while Torres's travails continued
to the extent that supporters began venting their frustration.

He, Oscar and Hazard wasted a great
chance to strike after fine harrying from Azpilicueta, with Romeu
following Ivanovic into the book for upending Berbatov.

The Bulgarian's coolness helped win a
dangerous free-kick that got Luiz cautioned before more composed play
set up Riise for a fierce drive Cech only just repelled.

In between that, Kerim Frei replaced Karagounis.

Torres finally found some space with
just over 10 minutes remaining but his angled volley after good chest
control was cleared by Aaron Hughes and may have been going wide anyway.

Frei had a dubious penalty appeal
turned down before Marko Marin was handed his Premier League debut in
place of Hazard and Mladen Petric came on for Hugo Rodallega.

With time running out, the crowd finally turned their anger on Benitez, who was urging his team forward.

Dutifully, they spent the closing
moments camped in the Fulham box but despite a succession of blocked
shots and other near misses, they could not force a breakthrough.

His first was the decisive strike in the previous home match, the 1-0 win over QPR on November 10, and Stoke are now unbeaten in 13 games on their own turf in the league stretching back to February.

Tony Pulis' side, who were the better team overall this afternoon and nearly had another goal when Ryan Shawcross headed against the bar, now have three victories to their name this season and are up to 11th in the table on 16 points.

Fulham, meanwhile, stay ninth and are now winless in their last five games. In driving rain, it was the visitors who made the brighter start, with Giorgos Karagounis lashing an effort across goal and wide on two minutes.

There was a shaky moment soon after for Stoke as goalkeeper Asmir Begovic misread a back-pass, but the ball was cleared away and the home side began to settle down.

Robert Huth headed the clearest opportunity yet wide from Matthew Etherington's corner on the quarter hour-mark and the Potters continued to pressurise, with Adam sending the ball over after juggling it in the area.

Moments later the Scotland midfielder scored, taking one touch in the six-yard box when Peter Crouch headed Ryan Shotton's cross his way before swivelling and firing the ball in.

The hosts kept up the momentum as Glenn Whelan tried his luck from the edge of the area, drilling wide, and Shawcross almost made it 2-0 in the 36th minute when he clattered a header against the bar.

Fulham immediately broke forward, with Mladen Petric coming to meet a cross into the box but unable to finish, and Dimitar Berbatov – captain for the day in place of the suspended Brede Hangeland – then saw a delivery into the danger-zone scrambled away.

Stoke looked eager to wrap things up as the second half got under way and seconds after the restart Whelan scooped an effort over from Jon Walters' tee-up.

Their opponents had ideas of their own though, and after Karagounis had ballooned over, Steve Sidwell dived to connect with an Ashkan Dejagah cross only for the ball to skim harmlessly off his head.

There was then a scare for Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, who dropped a high ball but managed to smother it before anyone could pounce.

Adam, who was putting in a lively display, saw an effort deflect wide and Schwarzer then tipped away a header by Huth from one Etherington corner, before Shawcross nodded another off-target.

Fulham survived a scramble in the area after a Schwarzer punch, and then went close as Berbatov's drive was tipped away by Begovic.

Pulis had brought on Michael Kightly, who struck over, and with the visitors showing endeavour towards the end but unable to find an equaliser.

Another Stoke substitute Kenwyne Jones thought he had doubled his side's lead in the dying moments, but was flagged offside.

15.47: From InfostradaLive:

Sunderland have scored seven goals after 10 PL matches this season. They have only netted less at this stage in a PL season in 2002-03, when they had scored four. They finished that season last and were relegated, scoring only 21 goals in the whole season.

Sunderland’s seven league goals scored this season is also less than any other team in all four tiers of English league football this season.

15.39: Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill spoke to Sky Sports before the game:

'Cattermole's return is a big boost for us, he was playing well before getting injured.

James McClean is a big part of the squad, some players have played a lot of football but it’s just a case of taking him out and look at it from there, but he was fantastic last season and he can be so again.

'We get forward in reasonable numbers but we have struggled to create clear cut chances. We could’ve been 3-0 up at Everton at half-time so I’m hoping we can take confidence from that game into today.

15.34: With just under half-an-hour until kick-off I'm going to go off on a slight tangent and recommend you read Gary Neville's latest column for the Mail on Sunday.

The former Manchester United defender this week has commented on how Cristiano Ronaldo has redefined football. How Martin O'Neill could do with the Portuguese' creative spark right now.

15.29: You didn't read that incorrectly by the way. Only Manchester City and Stoke have conceded fewer than Sunderland's 11 so far this season.

It seems bizarre to think the Black Cats are a point in front of Southampton who have let in nearly three times the amount of goals.

15.26: The good thing for Fulham (and many neutrals) is that Dimitar Berbatov and Bryan Ruiz start in attack again.

The pair have formed a promising front pair at Craven Cottage so I look forward to seeing how they gel against one of the Premier League's tightest defences.

15.21: Fulham boss Martin Jol hands Giorgos Karagounis his first start for the club for the Barclays Premier League visit of Sunderland.

The 35-year-old Greece midfielder replaced the suspended Chris Baird with Damien Duff coming in for the injured Kieran Richardson and Alex Kacaniklic demoting Ashkan Dejagah to the bench.

Sunderland skipper Lee Cattermole is passed fit following a knee injury and replaces James McClean in Martin O'Neill's starting line-up.

While Phil Bardsley recovers from a hamstring injury in time to step in for the suspended Craig Gardner at right-back.

15.16: Part of Sunderland's recent troubles have been down to Steven Fletcher suddenly drifting out of form.

Adam Johnson became the first Black Cats player to score a league goal other than the Scot (and own goals) in the defeat at Everton last week. But Fletcher hasn't scored since September.

15.11: Fulham starting XI:

Schwarzer, Riether, Riise, Hangeland, Hughes, Sidwell, Karagounis, Kacaniklic, Duff, Ruiz, Berbatov.

15.06: Sunderland starting XI:

Mignolet, Bardsley, Rose, Cuellar, O'Shea, Cattermole, Colback, Larsson, Johnson, Sessegnon, Fletcher.

15.03: Only both the Manchester clubs have scored more than Fulham who have seen 16 goals in their last three league games.

We'll ignore the fact that Sunderland games by contrast have only seen 18 goals over the entire course of the season so far.

15.00: I know what you're thinking and yes this wouldn't have been a fixture that would have sprung to my mind when deciding an exclusive match for Sunday.

But stick with this folks as Fulham have delivered a few blockbusters this season while Sunderland are in slight danger of being dragged into a relegation fight. Team news as ever is on the way.

Fulham 1 Aston Villa 0: Baird pops up late to pile pressure on Lambert

UPDATED:

16:23 GMT, 20 October 2012

Fulham midfielder Chris Baird upstaged his returning team-mate Dimitar Berbatov with the late winner as Fulham condemned Aston Villa to more away day misery.

Baird got a deft touch to John Arne Riise's near-post corner to beat goalkeeper Brad Guzan and deny Villa what looked increasingly like a battling point.

Fulham had been the better side, with Berbatov in commanding form on his comeback from a hip injury, but they had failed to convert a hatful of chances.

The home support were beginning to get
edgy when the man they hail as 'Bairdinho' popped up with the kind of
finish Berbatov would have been proud of to snatch the points for
Fulham.

Villa, who had not won on the road in 13 Barclays Premier League matches
dating back to January, had a chance to rescue a point but Christian
Benteke missed a sitter from close-range.

Benteke had been sent on for Darren Bent, who was restored to the Villa
starting line-up after being dropped for the last two matches.

Bent failed to make much of impression – glancing one header wide and
otherwise cutting a picture of frustration up front – unlike Berbatov.

The serene Bulgarian was immediately into the action, playing a key role
as Fulham pressed Guzan into action twice inside the first five
minutes.

Berbatov found a yard of space inside the Villa box and turned on Kieran
Richardson's pass but Guzan reacted quickly to palm the shot away from
an acute angle.

The Bulgarian still has this wonderful ability to play the game at his
own pace and he calmly held off the attentions of Nathan Baker to bring
Sascha Riether into the box.

The German full-back squeezed a pass through to Richardson six yards out
but Guzan blocked his shot and Riether's effort from the rebound went
wide.

Baker's response was to hack Berbatov down from behind, which seemed
just about the only way Villa were going to win the ball off him.

Fulham appeared capable of scoring every time they were in possession.

Chris Baird and Steve Sidwell anchored the midfield and they always had
runners, with John Arne Riise and Riether given the freedom to attack
from full-back and stretch Villa.

At times Fulham played with five attackers as Richardson, Hugo Rodallega
and the busy Mladen Petric supported Berbatov in causing Villa
problems.

Brede Hangeland ran out of defence and slid a pass to Berbatov, who
clipped a magnificent cross on the turn towards Baird but the header was
wide.

Gabriel Agbonlahor created Villa's first opportunity himself, cutting in
from the left before unleashing a deflected shot which brought a diving
save from Mark Schwarzer.

Bent could not get enough on Matthew Lowton's cross from the right wing
and his glancing header drifted harmlessly wide but that was as close as
Villa came in the first half.

Riise whipped one cross in for Berbatov, who did well to force a save
from Guzan, and then another for Rodallega but the Colombian headed
wide.

Agbonlahor was working hard for Villa and he tried to pick out Bent in
the Fulham box but Sidwell, enjoying a strong game against his old club,
was on hand to intercept.

Villa started the second-half brightly, with Agbonlahor heading over the
bar from Lowton's cross but Fulham still looked the more likely team to
score.

Karim El Ahmadi was booked for a foul on Berbatov that checked a Fulham counter-attack.

volley after Rodallega's cross had fallen to him at the far post.

Villa failed to clear their lines properly and it required a brave block
from Lowton to deny Richardson, before Bent was replaced by Benteke.

Ashkan Dejagah came on for Fulham to make his debut and was quickly in
the thick of the action, stinging Guzan's hands with a 25-yard drive
after some sublime build-up play.

Then came the breakthrough. Baird stole in front of Eric Lichaj, Fabian
Delph and Bennett to get a touch to Riise's corner and beat Guzan at the
near post.

The reaction inside Craven Cottage as much one of relief as celebration – although that should have been cut short immediately.

Charles N'Zogbia squared the ball to Benteke six yards out but he
inexplicably failed to hit the target and with that miss went Villa's
hopes of a point.

Roberto Mancini grateful latest referee mistake did not hurt Manchester City

At least this one didn't hurt us! Mancini angry about chain of refereeing 'mistakes'

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini is relieved the latest in a number of recent 'mistakes' did not cost his side at Fulham on Saturday.

The reigning Barclays Premier League champions picked up a 2-1 victory by the Thames thanks to substitute Edin Dzeko's goal three minutes from time.

The Bosnia international's goal followed Sergio Aguero's effort late in the first half, which levelled things up at Craven Cottage after Mladen Petric's penalty had given the hosts a 10th-minute lead.

Referee Mark Halsey awarded the spot-kick after adjudging Pablo Zabaleta trip on John Arne Riise to be just inside the 18-yard box – a decision that irked Mancini.

'Against Fulham here it is always difficult,' the City boss said. 'They are a good team, have good players, a good manager.

'This pitch is always a tough for us but the problem is we were 1-0 down and I don't know why because the penalty was not a penalty.

'We were 1-0 down and Fulham didn't shoot on goal for the first 20 minutes.

'That was a problem but I am happy because the players continued to play well, kept calm and we had a lot of chances.'

Asked to clarify why he thought the penalty should not have been awarded, the Italian retorted: 'You saw everything. My opinion was that it was out [of the box] and it was no foul, no penalty.

'No, I don't agree it was a penalty. What do you think'

Mancini claims the incident was the latest in a number of recent decisions that have cost his side.

'We can do nothing,' he added. 'There were a lot of mistakes in the past four games.

'We accept this, but we're not happy. This is true but we can do nothing, only continue to play.

'Sometimes it is a penalty but the referee is there to take a decision. Sometimes he does well, sometimes he can do bad.

'If we go to watch all our last three games, against Stoke it was handball. I don't know why the referee that was behind didn't give it. Against Arsenal there was one penalty.'

Saturday's victory propelled City up the table and stopped the rot after a winless streak that stretched to four matches in all competitions.

While Dzeko will take the headlines for his late goal, Mancini can be just as thankful to Riise for their winner.

The Norwegian left-back failed to clear a Gael Clichy cross, allowing Dzeko to rifle home inside the box and secure three points.

'It was a mistimed ball,' Fulham manager Martin Jol said. 'I would hit it with my right foot instead of trying to head it. It was a bad clearance.

'I think he will be disappointed because the mistake he made they punished.

'They are a very good team but there is always a possibility against them to play your football like, for example, Arsenal did last week.

'They have to punish them and we couldn't play our style, especially in the second half.

Oh well: Mancini is glad City did not pay for the decision

'We couldn't keep the ball, they were stronger than us and more eager to score.

'The only thing we could do was defend, defend, defend and that is probably not enough if you would like a result against them.'

Considering Fulham had just lost the chance of a point against the reigning champions, Jol continued with his surprisingly philosophical stance in the post-match press conference.

'You can't complain because they are a world-class team,' the Dutchman said.

'If it's still 1-1 after 87 minutes, then you still have a slight hope that could do something on the break or defend against them.

'I think we did defending but the frustrating thing was that although they dominated possession, especially in the second half, the goals were pretty scrappy.'

Robin van Persie marked his first start for Manchester United with a fine goal as Sir Alex Ferguson's side saw off Fulham at Old Trafford.

Van Persie, who came on as a substitute in Monday's defeat at Everton after completing his 24million move from Arsenal, was given the nod with Wayne Rooney starting on the bench.

Olympic sprint king Usain Bolt was paraded on the pitch before the match but it was Damien Duff who made the fast start and grabbed a third-minute opener.

But the lead didn't last long as Van Persie opened his account in superb style with the equaliser seven minutes later.

Another new recruit, Shinji Kagawa, fired United ahead ahead 10 minutes before the break, pouncing from close range after Mark Schwarzer blocked Tom Cleverley's shot, and Rafael got in on the act with a header.

United were in cruise control but they gifted the visitors a lifeline when Nemanja Vidic put the ball into his own net with 25 minutes left.

Rooney made his entrance just after Fulham's second, replacing Kagawa, but it was the Cottagers who stepped up the pace in search of the leveller.

United were forced to defend late on but they hold on for their first points of the campaign.

Fulham"s unsung heroes shine against Norwich

Who needs Dempsey Fulham's unsung heroes shine in Norwich romp

Martin Jol was forced to leave Clint Dempsey out of his Fulham squad against Norwich, with the American’s future at the club uncertain.

Last season’s top scorer was not missed, but who were the lesser-known faces in Jol’s new-look team

WHAT THEY NEED IN THE WINDOW…

FULHAM: To get the Clint Dempsey situation resolved quickly. Martin Jol hasn’t ruled out a return for the American but was clearly angry with his attitude in pre-season. After such a great start, they could do without disruption. Either get rid of him or make him commit.

NORWICH: Fresh faces. Buoyed by back-to-back promotions Norwich looked comfortable finishing 12th last season but they’ve lost the man behind that, Paul Lambert, and his replacement Chris Hughton hasn’t brought in enough quality to maintain what will be a tough second season at the top.

Mladen Petric, 31, striker

What a debut for the Croat. Two goals — a header and a 25-yard deflected shot — and the deftest back-heel flick to set up Alex Kacaniklic for another.

The 31-year-old has scored 124 goals in 336 appearances over a career spanning 14 years and five clubs, plying his trade for the last five seasons in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund and then Hamburg.

He scored five goals in six pre-season games for his new club so he’s settling in quickly. Jol certainly thinks he got a bargain, signing the player on a free.

He said: ‘Petric is in the group of players who will score goals, maybe not 20 in 20 games, but he will score one in two.

‘That is a good record but he didn’t do it last season and if you are not a Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona, you have to get the quality in when they are not playing well. I think that is what I did with Petric.’

Alex Kacaniklic, 21, left winger

The 21-year-old got his first senior goal in only his third start. Jol only told him he was starting, in the position on the left side of an attacking three behind a main striker usually adopted by Dempsey last season, the day before the game.

He made his debut for Sweden last week against Brazil so it was quite a week for him. He finished well for the goal and terrorised Russell Martin on the left all game.

He’s been given the nickname Kaka, but he said: ‘That’s from my surname obviously. I don’t want to be compared to anyone. He’s a great player, I’m just making my name for myself now.’

Sascha Riether, 29, right back

The little-known German right back has had a mixed career. He has joined Fulham on a season-long loan after being relegated with Cologne last season.

But the 29-year-old, who can also play in midfield, has a Bundesliga title on his c.v., having won it in 2009 with Wolfsburg. Fulham have an option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.

Hugo Rodallega, 27, striker

Five seasons of Premier League experience at Wigan has seen a return of only 24 goals. But in 2009-10 he scored 10 league goals and nine the following season, so he has proved he can get a team goals when he is fit. Still returning to full fitness but came off the bench and won the penalty that Steve Sidwell scored for Fulham’s fifth.

Bryan Ruiz, 27, forward

He signed from FC Twente for 10.6million at the end of last summer’s transfer window so he is hardly a new face — but the performance he put in on Saturday is one that Fulham fans have not seen before.

Last season he broke a bone in his foot and his lack of goals (he scored two)meant he did not live up to his price tag. But he showed against Norwich he’s got the awareness and passing ability to unlock defences this season.
