Stan Collymore has urged Fernando Torres to leave Chelsea for his own good.

The former Liverpool and Aston Villa striker believes the Spaniard is finding his time at Stamford Bridge dark, desperate and lonely.

Torres, who cost 50million, failed to flourish under Carlo Ancelotti, Andre Villas-Boas and Roberto Di Matteo.

Now interim manager Rafa Benitez, who helped Torres find the best form of his career at Liverpool, cannot help his compatriot to get back among the goals.

'It’s all over for the striker now. His confidence is beyond shot,' wrote Collymore in his Sunday People column.

'He will put on the blue of Chelsea every day and he will hate it, as he will the daily drive to Cobham for training.'

Collymore continued: 'I have said this before and I have to say it again: It’s time to go, Fernando. For your sake, and yours alone.'

Torres was dropped to the bench against West Brom on Saturday, coming on as a substitute for 10 minutes.

January signing Demba Ba played in his stead and scored the winning goal.

Torres is expected to start for Chelsea on Thursday night when they take on Steaua Bucharest in the Europa League because Ba is cup tied.

Stoke City are considering a move for out-of-favour Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey during the summer.

The former Charlton prospect has
recently fallen out of Brendan Rodgers first-team plans and the Sunday
People suggest that he could be available in a cut-price transfer in the summer.

Stoke are
understood to be observing the 21-year-old’s progress with Tony Pulis having sent a two-man party to watch the England international
in a reserve match last week.

Shelvey impressed earlier in the
season for the Reds in his 14 appearances, earning a first England senior cap against San Marino in October.

However, the youngster has been
criticised for his latest displays and he was hauled off by Rodgers after
60 minutes in his last start, an uninspiring performance during their 2-0 defeat against
West Brom in February.

Stoke look set to lose unsettled
former Liverpool man Charlie Adam in the summer and Pulis has now eyed up Shelvey in a 7million swoop as the ideal replacement for the

Arsene Wenger has revealed his love for the English national anthem as he paid tribute to the country where he has managed for the last 16 years.

The 63-year-old Frenchman has helped mould the modern English game since he took over at Arsenal in 1996 and he admitted the country has had an effect on him too.

At the FA's 150th anniversary celebrations today, Wenger said: 'I feel grateful because football was love affair of my life. England created football. I’ll always have massive respect for that.

'Without this country, I would not have known football. So the anniversary is a good opportunity to thank England as sometimes the world forgets that.

Since arriving at Arsenal, Wenger has won three Premier Leagues and four FA Cups, including doubles in both the 1997-98 and 2001-02 seasons.

His 'Invicibles' team, which went unbeaten in the 2003-04 campaign, epitomised the football which has led to millions of fans around the globe following the Premier League.

'There’s a real passion here for the game but as well, I believe the whole world benefits from this sport,' he said.

'When I travel to World Cups and Euros, I say always, “Let’s be on time, I don’t want to miss the national anthem of England”.

'That’s where you feel the passion of the game. No matter where it is, there are more English people than anybody else. That’s fantastic.'

David Haye has again underlined his desire to face Vitali Klitschko in 2013 by taunting the WBC heavyweight champion with the claim that he is yet to have a 'flagship' fight.

As has been customary throughout his career, Haye appears to believe in trying to talk his way into a fight with the Ukrainian – the younger brother of Wladimir, who beat the Londoner on points in July 2011 – by insisting that the elder Klitschko needs to fight to boost his own credibility.

'There’s nobody else in heavyweight division that can give RTL (the TV company that has a four-year deal with Klitschkos) the viewing figures,' Haye told The Telegraph.

'I wished Vitali a happy new year and congratulated him on all his political bits and bobs and whatever he’s doing over there in the Ukrainian parliament.

'But the bottom line is that he’s a fighter and hopefully he wants the fight the fans want.

'He’s never had that flagship fight, that one mega-fight that people will always remember him for. The only one people remember is the fight with Lennox Lewis, in which he came off second best,' Haye added of the 2003 fight in which Klitschko was stopped in the sixth round because of a significant cut over his left eye.

'He’s a proud man, and I’m sure he wants that big victory that he’s never had. He’s fought a lot of people, but for 10 years he’s been a huge favourite.

'I guarantee the smart money would be on someone like myself with power and speed and youth beating him, and he is going to have to pull off the upset. Whether he wants to put himself in that position remains to be seen.'

Since losing to Wladimir, Haye's only fight came against Dereck Chisora at Upton Park when he stopped his opponent in five rounds. Chisora had gone the distance with Vitali only months earlier.

QPR are hoping to secure the loan signature of Joe Cole from Liverpool as they look to boost their Premier League survival bid.

Rangers manager Harry Redknapp gave Cole his breakthrough at West Ham and he is hoping to be reunited with the former England international when the transfer window opens in January.

According to the Sunday People, Liverpool are prepared to cover a large percentage of Cole’s 90,000-a-week wages and are willing to let the 31-year-old join QPR permanently should they avoid relegation.

Cole joined Liverpool in the summer of 2010 from Chelsea but he has struggled to hold down a first-team place under both former boss Kenny Dalglish – who loaned him out to Lille last season – and Brendan Rodgers, who has preferred the likes of Raheem Sterling and Sus

QPR eye move for Anelka: Redknapp confirms relegation threatened club are in talks with former Chelsea striker

Harry Redknapp has revealed QPR are in talks to sign former Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka in January.

The Frenchman wants to terminate his contract with Shanghai Shenhua after he scored just three goals in 22 matches and was replaced as player-coach of the Chinese side.

Redknapp admitted QPR are interested in Anelka, 33, but insisted Rangers would not pay over the odds for his services – despite being five points from safety with just one win in the Premier League this season.

The QPR boss also joked that if Barcelona were interested in Adel Taraabt they would have to offer Leo Messi in a swap deal.

Redknapp said: 'Barcelona want him, do they Maybe we’ll have a straight swap with Messi. We’ll do a deal. We don’t want to sell him. No-one’s made an offer for him. He plays here.

More seriously, he added: ‘Nicolas Anelka is a player who’s of interest to anybody. He’ s finishing in China so he’s available.

'It’s what you can afford and whether you think he can do the job you want. He’ s a top player so he’s a player we would be interested in, but whether we can afford it.

'I think the chairman (Tony Fernandes) knows Nicolas’ people. He’s got a few details on what it would be but it depends, just how expensive the whole package comes to. If it’s within reason he certainly could improve your team.

'Whoever we bring in here as got to be the right type. We can’t afford to load up again, with people who aren’t the right type. I’ve spoken to the chairman and Philip (Beard, the chief executive), but finding people is not easy.

'People think they can screw you into the ground because you’re desperate, because you’re going to get relegated, but we’re not going to fall into that trap. They’ll ask 6million when the player’s worth 3m.’

Redknapp confirmed technical director Mike Rigg and Mark Hughes’ assistants Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki have left the club and said bringing in Ian Broomfield, whom he worked with at Tottenham, as chief scout was 'a possibility'. The QPR boss also wants former Rangers striker Les Ferdinand to join Joe Jordan and Kevin Bond in his backroom staff, as revealed by Sportsmail earlier this month.

Redknapp said: ‘We’ve got one or two good scouts here but you need your own people around you; people you know and can talk to all the time. At least you can bounce ideas off them, and that’s important.

'Last week was make or break. If we had got beat (by Fulham) last week it would have been double desperate. We’re desperate as it is.

'We need to improve the squad in Jan, we need to get a couple in that can help us make the difference. If we can’t find them we’ll stick with what we’ve got, if people are going to take liberties with us, screw us , if we’re desperate. And if we can do that, we’ve still got a chance.’

Goalkeeper Julio Cesar and defender Jose Bosingwa have both suffered minor back injuries that will rule them out of tomorrow’s trip to Newcastle United, although Redknapp expects both players to be fit for QPR’s home match against West Bromwich Albion on Boxing Day.

Frank Lampard is weighing up a move to QPR after falling out of favour at Chelsea.

The veteran midfielder is out of contract in the summer but he may hasten his exit after being snubbed by Rafael Benitez for Chelsea's Club World Cup semi-final against Monterrey, reports the Sunday People.

Despite Ramires being out injured Benitez opted to use David Luiz in an unfamiliar midfield role rather than turn to the 34-year-old England international.

Rangers boss Harry Redknapp is looking to strengthen his squad in January and he is thought to be interested in a deal to bring his nephew to Loftus Road.

The Blues are interested in bringing Roma midfielder Miralem Pjanic to Stamford Bridge as a replacement for Lampard. The 22-year-old Bosnian international is rated at 14million.

Oscar Pistorius has never baulked at a challenge. The sprinter was a star of both the Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer, but his latest feat is little more on the obscure side.

The South African athlete raced against an Arabian horse named Maserati in Doha… and won!

Pistorius, who is nicknamed the “Blade
Runner” because of his carbon fibre running blades, outran the Arabian stud over 115metres in the
‘Run Like The Wind’ challenge at the Aspire Zone outdoor circuit.

The athlete, who reached the 400m semi-finals in London and also ran in the 4x400m relay final to realise his boyhood dream of competing at the able-bodied Games, took full advantage of starting 15 metres in front of Maserati, who made a sluggish start to the race.

The sprinter, who was born without
the fibula bones in both legs, was taking part in the Definitely Able
campaign to highlight how Paralympians have contributed in sport.

After the race, Pistorius said: 'It wasnt about who won today, it was about just coming out here and showing people that those with disabilities are not to be stereotyped against.

'Thanks to everybody who came out here, we had a good night and hopefully that will do a lot to change perceptions of people with disabilities in this region.'

Pistorius is not even the first South African to run against an animal. Rugby player Bryan Habana ran against a cheetah in 2007.

O'Neill lines up 5m January swoop for Dawson to shore up Sunderland defence

Martin O'Neill is preparing a 5m January pursuit of Tottenham defender Michael Dawson as part of a spending spree to revive Sunderland's flagging season.

The Black Cats boss will be given significant funds by club owner Ellis Short in a bid to correct a poor start to the season.

And 29-year-old Dawson is top of the list, according to the Sunday People.

Sunderland find themselves in the relegation zone, with just two wins and 13 points to their name so far.

Their defensive record hasn't been too catastrophic – with 21 goals conceded – but O'Neill believes Dawson's leadership qualities could add extra steel to the side.

When Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas arrived in the summer, he was willing to offload Dawson and a 5.5m fee was agreed with Queens Park Rangers before the player turned it down.

However, Dawson, who has four England caps, has worked hard to win back his starting place in the last few weeks – making a January move less likely.

Sunderland may face competition from QPR, with Harry Redknapp reportedly keen on signing a player with whom he enjoyed a good relationship at Spurs.

Dawson has been at White Hart Lane since January 2005, when he joined for 8m from Nottingham Forest.

United set to blow rivals out of the water with mega bid for Palace star Zaha

UPDATED:

10:33 GMT, 18 November 2012

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to launch a bid to sign Crystal Palace sensation Wilfried Zaha with an offer that will blow away any other interested clubs.

Ferguson decided to enter the race to England’s newest star when he received the recommendation from his son Darren, after Zaha ripped his Peterborough side apart a few weeks ago.

And now United are set to offer ‘what it takes’ to see off Tottenham and Arsenal in the January window which includes handing the 20-year-old better terms to come to Old Trafford.

According to The Sunday People, Ferguson has kept an eye on Zaha since he dazzled against them in Palace’s shock League Cup triumph last season.

A United source told The People: ‘Sir Alex now thinks Zaha has the skill and bottle to play for United – and he wants him badly.’

Palace are hoping to get 20million for
Zaha but will realistically settle for half of that – a figure United
will gladly pay, having paid similar sums for emerging talents Phil
Jones from Blackburn and Chris Smalling from Fulham.

Ferguson sees Zaha as a Cristiano Ronaldo-style attacker, capable of playing down either wing and scoring goals through pace and trickery.

Zaha is seen as the ideal replacement for Nani who is in a contract dispute and may be on his way out, creating a gap in the United squad. Spurs and Arsenal are also keen but will struggle against United.

The Ivory Coast-born kid has lived in London since he was four, but he would head north if the clubs can sort out a fee.

While Palace would like to keep him for their promotion push, the auction could reach a level where they cannot refuse.

Palace boss Ian Holloway, meanwhile, fears the youngster's progress could suffer as result of his elevation to the England senior squad.

'It’s a difficult time for him as everything has happened at once.

'This could damage a young man who is as pure a footballer as he is.

'He has to learn to handle it, put the emotion away and do his job.'
