David Moyes promised Rafa Benitez a warm welcome to the dug-out but was less sure of the reception awaiting him from irate Everton fans when Chelsea visit Goodison Park tomorrow.

Benitez is getting used to being booed by his own Chelsea followers since taking over but he can expect an even greater level of hostility when he takes a team to Goodison for the first time in over three years.

Vilified by Stamford Bridge patrons for some disparaging remarks about Chelsea as Liverpool manager, Benitez also managed to alienate Everton supporters during his Anfield tenure.

They were unhappy with his ‘small club’ jibe in 2007 — a comment which related to alleged defensive tactics — and it will surely return to haunt him when he emerges from the Goodison tunnel.

Asked yesterday whether Everton might be punching above their weight for a small club as they challenge for a Champions League place, Moyes grinned and said: ‘I’d better not answer that.’

The Everton manager was still smiling as he considered whether Benitez’s outburst might provoke a backlash from his club’s supporters and players.

‘Will it motivate us No, I don’t think it will have any effect whatsoever,’ he said wryly. ‘I think we have moved on as a team since he was last here.

‘There has been a lot of progress and that is why we have done so well over the past 12 months.’

MASTERS 2012: Frustrated Tiger Woods puts the boot in after he blows his big chance

Frustrated Tiger puts the boot in after he blows his big chance

22:59 GMT, 7 April 2012

Five o'clock shadows were marching relentlessly across Augusta National as thousands of Masters patrons made their way towards the exits.

Among the exodus were a father and his young son dressed in Tiger Woods garb, his face a picture of disappointment.

‘There’s no point staying any longer,’ said the father, rather heartlessly. ‘He’s got no chance.’

Hacker: Tiger Woods reacts to another poor shot

A week that had begun with the mighty Sports Illustrated, with all the wisdom of a pub bore, explaining that Tiger versus Rory was ‘the only story in golf’ has reached the final day with one half of the equation failing completely to live up to his side of the bargain.

If this is a rivalry, then Woods fits effortlessly into the Liverpool role to Rory McIlroy’s Manchester United. He even won his equivalent of the Carling Cup, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, a couple of weeks ago. Come the Masters, however, and his third round was almost done before Rory’s had begun.

When that father and son left the grounds on Friday afternoon, Woods had six holes of his second round to complete. If anything, the offspring was spared the worst, an unravelling down the stretch so dramatic and complete that Sir Nick Faldo, in a brilliantly vivid piece of TV commentary, declared: ‘I think we can officially say Tiger has lost both his game and his mind.’

Just as well for another reason that the son was not watching — for the deterioration in Woods’s behaviour and language matched the slide in his game. There were frequent ‘god-dammits’ and clubs thrown in anger.

There were so many pained expressions and times when he covered his face with his cap.

There was more appalling behaviour yesterday that will have troubled the Green Jackets. On the 13th tee, tucked away from the spectators but not TV’s prying eye, Woods slammed his three wood into the turf as another shot went astray, producing an ugly divot.

If someone behaved like this at a members’ club they would be ushered towards the exit. So much for Woods’s self-professed wish to become a better person in the wake of his sex scandal.

In four victories at the Masters, Woods had never entered the weekend in anything worse than fourth. Here, he found himself out of position at tied 40th at the halfway stage after a 75 that was only one shot shy of his worst score as a pro in 18 appearances at the Masters.

A third-round 72 has hardly altered his position and left him with nothing more than pride to play for today. He’s got plenty of work to do to avoid his worst finish at Augusta since joining the paid ranks, which stands at tied 22nd in 2004.

There are people who will insist that, technically, he is working on the wrong things with his coach, Sean Foley, and they will point to the fact he was last after two rounds in fairways hit and tied 50th in greens hit in regulation.

But if that is the case, how can you explain his technical excellence going into the event, the fact he led the U.S. Tour stats for total driving To go from No 1 to last suggests a psychological problem.

As in the second round, Woods got off to the perfect start yesterday, at two under for the first four holes. As on Friday, he ‘blew it’, to use his own descriptive phrase on that first occasion.

Was this really the player who had gone into the event ranked the favourite by those people who usually know what they are on about — the bookmakers

This was a demonstration of the pressures that encompass major championship golf, and the difficulties that lie ahead as he tries to find his best game, never mind the aura that once accompanied his every stroke.

‘I don’t think we’ve ever seen him look this uncomfortable at Augusta,’ said Faldo. This was the new Tiger, now 36 and with demons to confront and overcome like everyone else.

On Friday he had practised in the dark, vainly groping for a solution. Not after yesterday’s round. What would be the point

It is back to the drawing board he needs to go, not the range.

That”s a rap! City striker Balotelli “stars” in Tinchy Stryder grime track!

Mario Balotelli can”t keep out of the headlines of late and now it seems he”s destined to dominate the charts too after pint-sized rap star Tinchy Stryder dedicated a track to the Manchester City striker.

Balotelli”s antics have earned a certain notoriety since his 24million switch from Inter Milan to Manchester City last summer.

One question: Mario reveals his infamous t-shirt

Just this week he enthralled drinkers ata local pub in Manchester where he put 1,000 behind the bar as a Christmas treat for the patrons before heading to Midnight Mass at a local church.

His sublime ability hit the front and back pages – for good or bad – led the Italy international to reveal his infamous “Why Always Me” t-shirt during the 6-1 victory over Manchester United in October – a message which clearly resonated with Stryder.

The rapper penned the hit which he released on Christmas Eve as a free festive gift for his fans on an EP called The Wish List.

The eight-track release features a number of grime hits which have made the 5ft 1ins star a huge star in recent years.

But the track about Balotelli is the stand-out tune. Starting with a number of clips of interviews with the City striker, the chorus uses his shirt slogan and name as the hook.

“Why always me, why always me… Mario Balotelli”

But he”s not the only football player to feature. Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech rates a mention too, if only as a warning to people to keep their heads down.

“Why Always Me” was the slogan which adorned Mario Balotelli”s shirt recently, but his Christmas antics should surely explain the reason why the Manchester City striker makes so many headlines.

Balotelli enthralled drinkers at a local pub in Manchester where he put 1,000 behind the bar as a Christmas treat for the patrons.

City”s Italian striker then headed over to church to attend Midnight Mass before handing over 200 into the collecting tray.

Those gathered at the Tudor pub in Peel Hall were astonished when the 24million striker arrived for some pre-Christmas drinks.

A source told The Sun: “Nobody could believe it when he walked in.

“The last thing anyone expected was a big celebrity like him turning up for the service but he was very polite and charming and didn”t draw attention to himself.”

“He was very down to earth. Everyone wanted to talk to him and he took it in his stride.

“It”s not a smart pub, so it was a big surprise when he walked in.”

Balotelli then headed over to St John”s church in Chorlton, where manager Roberto Mancini was among the attendees a year earlier.

Alan Shearer the favourite as Blackburn prepare to sack Steve Kean

Shearer favourite to take over as Blackburn prepare to sack Kean

Alan Shearer is the front-runner to take over as Blackburn manager as owners Venky”s prepare to put an end to Steve Kean”s public torment.

Venky”s bosses are studying reports of Saturday”s shambolic home defeat by West Bromwich before deciding whether to axe Kean now or hand him one final opportunity, in Tuesday”s basement battle with Bolton.

Al”s your man: Former Newcastle boss Alan Shearer is being tipped to take over at Blackburn

Either way, former Blackburn striker Shearer is ready to step in after being nominated by key advisers as the prime candidate to restore harmony at a club riven by public opposition to Kean and plummeting player morale.

Monday”s Lancashire Evening Telegraph, the influential local newspaper, is expected to call for Kean”s removal in a front page editorial.

After a brief spell in charge of Newcastle, it is understood Shearer is interested in taking the reins, despite Blackburn”s perilous position near the foot of the Barclays Premier League and the likelihood that he would have only a modest budget in the January transfer window.

As Venky”s consider their options, they may well be swayed by Shearer”s standing among Ewood Park patrons after he spearheaded Blackburn”s title success in 1995.

Kean refused to concede his sacking was inevitable, despite more chants of “You don”t know what you”re doing” during Saturday”s 2-1 defeat.

“We have a massive game against Bolton on Tuesday, and yes, I do believe I will still be here for that,” Kean said.

“There have always been reassurances from the owners, and I haven”t heard anything to the contrary.”

Kean added: “Because the players don”t play well with the ball for one half of one game does not mean the negativity is getting to them.”

Chris Samba”s assessment was at odds with Kean”s and underlined the task facing Blackburn”s next manager in trying to lift morale.

“We are devastated,” said the Blackburn skipper. “We are so low. As a team, we have not proved we are good enough to stay in this league. It is difficult at the moment, because the mood in the dressing room is down.”

The timing of Kean”s departure appears to be the only remaining issue. As Rovers followed their normal procedure of examining matchday feedback from their beleaguered boss and director Simon Hunt, Venky”s were attempting to reach an agreement on when he should go.

They have been left in little doubt that Shearer should be appointed sooner rather than later, though former Blackburn manager Mark Hughes and Avram Grant are also in the frame.
