FA General Secretary Alex Horne told BBC Sport earlier this week: ‘I always thought it was an ideal piece of technology to allow into the game. The (Premier League) club meeting is on Thursday so I'm expecting it to go through at that meeting.’

‘There are occasions (when GLT is needed) and we've seen them here at Wembley, we've seen them in World Cups, we've seen them 11 or 12 times in the Premier League this season alone.

‘So technology that says 'yes, the ball has crossed the line' and lets the referee know makes an awful lot of sense to me.

‘Particularly where it's a knock-out situation, incorrect decisions have less opportunity to even themselves out over a season.’

The Premier League are likely to ‘centrally fund’ GLT for its member clubs and the FA will pay for cameras to be installed at Wembley.

Lucas Leiva signs new long-term contract at Liverpool

Liverpool have announced that influential midfielder Lucas Leiva has signed a new long-term contract at the club.

The Brazilian who has made 20 appearances in the Premier League this season, has put pen to paper on a new deal as Brendan Rodgers looks to build a midfield capable of challenging for the top four in the coming years.

The news comes just over two years to the day that the 26-year-old signed another long-term contract with the club, that time being rewarded for his superb form by manager Kenny Dalglish.

He told the club's website: 'It's another long-term contract that I have signed – but it was the same feeling as when I first came here.

'I am really delighted to have the opportunity to play for this club. It's where I think I belong and where I wanted to stay, so I am very happy and looking forward to a few more years here.

'It was an easy decision because after the long period of my career I have had here, I would like to give the best of my time to this club. It was not a difficult decision to make and I am really looking forward to what will hopefully be a few more years with a lot of success.'

Lucas, who has appeared for Brazil on 20 occasions, joined the Merseyside club from Brazilian side Gremio for a reported 5million in July 2007, making 208 appearances since and slowly becoming a fans favourite after a slow start.

His previous deal was due to run out in the summer of 2015.

The club's managing director Ian Ayre showed his delight with the signing, which warns off any of Europe's top clubs making a move for the midfield maestro.

Ayre told the club's website: 'It's fantastic. He has been such a great servant to the club and I think during the period he went through with his two injuries, he put so much work into it and the club supported him through it.

'He just goes from strength to strength. We said throughout last summer and January, we wanted to keep our best, experienced players, and this is another great example of that.

'The manager has said several times that as well as having a great, young squad, it's important we have experience and it's important we have characters. People like Lucas fit that.

'He'll tell you he's still very young, but in footballing terms he's experienced and a big part of the team.'

Lionel Messi extended his five-month
scoring run to 19 games to became the first player ever to score in
consecutive matches against every other team in the division.

The Argentine scored in Barcelona's
2-2 draw with Celta Vigo to take his La Liga tally to 43 for this season
with nine games left of the campaign.

Messi has now scored 30 goals in the last 19 matches.

In the equivalent of an entire half-season, he has delivered match after match, scoring against all opponents.

It was on November 3 last year that
he last failed to score – at home to Celta Vigo – a game played less
than 24 hours after his partner, Antonella Ruccuzzo, had given birth to
their son, Thiago.

Messi played 90 minutes in the 3-1
victory that night, but there was to be no special goal dedicated to the
new born. He has made up for it since.

On eight occasions he has scored
twice and in a 5-1 win over Osasuna at the end of January he scored
four. With this latest strike, he is now on course to shatter the
half-century of league goals he clocked up last season.

With 10 games left last season he had
scored 33 goals – with nine games left now he is already on 43 and
homing in on last season's record-breaking 91 in all competitions in a
calendar year.

Barcelona assistant coach Jordi Roura
said: 'The fact that no one has ever done this before shows just how
difficult it is. Only with the passing of time will we realise just how
incredible his achievements have been.'

Messi, 25, started as captain, despite being sick on the pitch in Argentina's midweek draw against Bolivia in the high-altitude conditions of La Paz.

But with both Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez rested ahead of Barcelona's trip to Paris in the Champions League on Tuesday, Messi was starved of service.

He went down under a challenge from Vadim Demidov but referee Mateu Lahoz waved away penalty appeals.

Barcelona struggled in defence, with on-loan Arsenal striker Park Chu-Young causing problems for young centre-back Marc Bartra and only a fine double save from Jose Pinto kept out the home side after a mistake by Gerard Pique.

On 39 minutes, Barcelona fell behind when Fabian Orellana crossed for Natxo Insa to score. Messi saw a free-kick saved by Javi Varas, but two minutes before the break he turned provider for Cristian Tello to net.

It was Messi's 10th assist of the season – only Real Madrid's Mesut Ozil has managed more – but it was a goal he needed for the record and it came on 73 minutes.

In front of the penalty area, he fizzed the ball out wide to Tello and when the youngster played it back to him first time, Messi finished past Varas.

A late equaliser from Borja Oubina two minutes from time prevented Barcelona from taking all three points but Messi at least had his incredible record.

Boss Tito Vilanova is expected to travel with the squad after his return from New York, where he was having cancer treatment. 'It's a massive boost,' said Roura.

Frankie Dettori banned for six months

Dettori lands six-month riding ban over failed drug test at Longchamp

UPDATED:

11:53 GMT, 5 December 2012

Frankie Dettori, the best known jockey in British racing, has been banned from riding for six months by the French racing authorities after his failed drugs test at Longchamp on September 16.

The worldwide ban, which has been backdated to November 20, will keep the 41-year-old three-time champion out of action until May 19.

It has been reported that the substance was cocaine and Dettori’s ban matches that of Kieren Fallon who was also suspended for six months on the first of the two occasions he tested positive for the drug while riding in France in 2006.

Positive: Frankie Dettori failed a drug test after riding at Longchamp on September 16

It means the Dettori will miss the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas next season and most of the important Classic trials.

But he will able to return in time for the both the Oaks, Derby and important Royal Ascot fixture.

Dettori’s solicitor Christopher Stewart-Moore said: ‘I have spoken to Frankie since the announcement was made and he has told me he fully accepts France Galop's decision.

‘He also accepts that he has let down the sport he loves and all those associated with it, as well as the wider public.

‘But most of all, and this is his greatest regret, he has let down his wife and children.

'He is enormously grateful for the opportunities that he has been given by owners and trainers over the years, and for the support of his many fans.

‘Racing has been good to Frankie and he knows that his privileged position brings with it responsibility.

‘For this reason he is determined to rebuild his reputation when he returns to the saddle.

‘Frankie could make excuses. He has, after all, regularly been tested for prohibited substances throughout his career.

‘He is clear, however, that the responsibility for his current situation lies squarely with him.

‘From the start of France Galop's inquiry he has acknowledged to them he has made a mistake and that the fault was his.

‘Finally, he has asked me to thank everyone for the many messages of support he and his family have received.’

France Galop announced Dettori’s suspension 24 hours after the jockey’s case had been heard by its Stewards’ Committee in Paris.

That hearing came a fortnight after the Medical Committee of France Galop ruled Dettori had a case to answer and just over three weeks after it first emerged on November 13 that Dettori had produced a positive test.

The jockey did not attend either hearing but gave evidence to the Medical Committee via a conference call during which it is understood he expressed a desire to rebuild his career.

Just how hard that will be, Dettori is about to find out.

The most vivacious and engaging personality in racing should be able to work his way back into the sport. Other jockeys, like Fallon, have proved that after a positive drug test.

The situation surrounding Dettori’s lapse – the erosion and ultimate ending of his position within Sheik Mohammed’s Godolphin empire – will elicit sympathy in some quarters and his ability as a jockey will ensure there will be owners and trainers happy to book one of the sport’s most naturally-gifted talents.

But the extended absence from the sport comes at a time when, post Godolphin, Dettori had hoped to establish himself as the go-to freelance rider in British racing and, maybe, even challenge for a fourth championship.

Potential rides will have to be offered to rivals and possibly be lost forever.

The rebuilding of Dettori’s wider image will certainly be difficult. The happy-go-lucky image of the father of five has been tainted.

Battler: Dettori is determined to bounce back

Battler: Dettori is determined to bounce back

Dettori produced the positive test on the day he had four unsuccessful mounts at Longchamp on Arc trials day.

It came 24 hours after Encke had won the St Leger at Doncaster for his then employers Godolphin.

The colt had been ridden by young French jockey Mickael Barzalkona, whose promotion within the Sheik Mohammed operation had increasingly undermined Dettori, who had lost his status as the stable’s No 1 jockey.

There has been speculation that the disappointment of missing the Leger winner – Dettori had finished third on John Gosden’s Michelangelo – may have led to a moment of madness from an emotional athlete at a low ebb.

Rumours of a split from Godolphin had circulated before the Derby in June when the huge operation failed to find a runner for Dettori to ride and handed the mount on Kailani, their only representative in the Oaks, to Barzalona.

Dettori’s only group one winner in Britain for Godolphin this season was Colour Vision in the Ascot Gold Cup and his paltry return of 51 winners was his worst since his plane crash season in 2000.

The split finally did come when Dettori chose to ride Aidan O’Brien-trained Camelot in the Prix De L’Arc De Triomphe in October, a horse owned by Ireland’s Coolmore Stud, the Sheik’s big sporting and commercial rival.

It appeared a calculated act which inevitably led to the announcement that Dettori’s hugely-successful 18-year association with Godolphin would end at the close of the 2012 season.

His last ride for the stable proved to be his final mount before his ban when unplaced on Cavalryman in the Melbourne Cup on November 6.

The Queen is to have her first horse trained in Australia with Carlton House being transferred from Sir Michael Stoute to leading Australian trainer Gai Waterhouse.

Carlton House has ensured a disappointing season and failed to build on his third to Pour Moi in last year's Derby when he had an interrupted preparation and then lost a shoe in the final furlong.

The colt, whose biggest win came in last year’s Group Two Dante Stakes at York, will head Down Under after competing in Sunday’s Hong Kong Cup.

A failure to settle in the early stages of his races led Stoute to drop Carlton House back to a mile but on both occasions, most recently when fourth to Excelebration in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot in October, he disappointed.

The Queen’s racing advisor John Warren said: ‘Carlton House looks the perfect candidate to race in Australia where there are a considerable number of options for an older horse.

Arsenal's Emmanuel Frimpong can join Ghana's bid to qualify for the 2014 World Cup finals after FIFA switched his national eligibility from England.

FIFA said its players' status committee approved the change on Tuesday and Frimpong can now represent the African nation.

The 20-year-old midfielder, who is currently on loan to Charlton Athletic, was born in Ghana but moved to England at a young age.

He was discovered by Arsenal at the age of nine and joined their Hale End academy alongside Jack Wilshere.

Frimpong has since represented England under 16s and under 17s on six occasions each.

The player has also been committed to play for Ghana, however, and has been quoted a number of times confirming this.

In 2009, Frimpong said: 'No matter what, I will always play for Ghana because at the end of the day, from what I believe, I am a Ghanaian.'

In February 2011, he went on record as saying: 'I have always told my family that if Ghana calls me, I will personally ride by own bicycle from England to Ghana [to play for them].'

His debut was expected to be in August of the same year, but the friendly between the Black Stars and Nigeria at Vicarage Road in Watford was postponed because of the London riots.

Now that the necessary documentation has been completed, Frimpong could make his first start when Ghana resume their qualification campaign in March at home to Sudan.

At present, Ghana trail group leaders Zambia by three points after two matches but there is still doubt over one result.

Zambia were awarded a default victory after Sudan fielded an ineligible player, but the verdict is currently under appeal.

Striker Stockton sealed the win in the 53rd minute with a 20-yard strike then laid the ball off to substitute Power in the final minute of the 90 to side-foot in the third.

Lewis Hamilton regrets Mercedes move – Martin Whitmarsh

I hope Hamilton thinks he's made an awful mistake, says McLaren chief Whitmarsh

McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh believes Lewis Hamilton has already experienced regrets over his move to Mercedes.

Whitmarsh concedes he still does 'not fully understand' why Hamilton opted to quit McLaren after 14 years and join Mercedes, who have won just one race in three years since their return to Formula One.

Whitmarsh can appreciate Hamilton's desire 'to flee the nest' but remains disappointed by his decision, in particular as he feels it was made after a bad result in Singapore.

That was a race Hamilton should have won to firmly thrust himself back into the title picture, only to retire on lap 23 with a gearbox failure.

'It is always bad to make a decision in the aftermath of a bad race,' Whitmarsh told the official F1 website.

'He was pretty sure he was going to win that race and it (the retirement) was a disappointment.

Since Hamilton announced he was off to join Mercedes on a 45million three-year contract, the Brackley-based outfit have failed to score a single point.

McLaren have hardly set the world on fire either, although Hamilton should have won in Abu Dhabi on Sunday only to suffer another mechanical issue while leading from pole position.

Asked whether Hamilton already regretted his decision, Whitmarsh added: 'I think he has on occasions, yes. 'Probably, when you make a decision you have to tell yourself that the decision is made so you have to look forward.

'You say “Okay, that it is in the past”, so you don't spend too much time thinking about why. You just look forward and make the best out of the new situation.

'He is also not going to say he's made an awful mistake. I hope he thinks today he's made an awful mistake and I hope he thinks that next year.

'He's made that decision and he has to live with that decision.'

Despite such comments, Whitmarsh knows the end of the final race in Brazil in just over a fortnight's time will be highly emotional.

'Right now we still want to win races. We are motivated by that and our conversation circles around that,' he added.

'Maybe he is completely dispassionate about it, but my guess is we both will have very emotional moments in Brazil.

'I have known him since he was 11 and worked with him since his teens and I know we will both be very emotional after Brazil.

'We have had one or two emotional moments since the decision was taken and I believe, but you must ask him, that we have a very good relationship.'
