As time ticks on in the January transfer window, Arsene Wenger offered a fascinating insight into modern-day recruitment methods on Thursday.

Stressing that the job was tougher than when he arrived at Arsenal in September 1996, he admitted that the pressure is always on ‘to find the next Lionel Messi’.

Wenger’s exceptional record in the transfer market, especially in his early years as Arsenal’s manager, is up there with the very best. Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry, Emmanuel Petit, Freddie Ljungberg, Robert Pires, Edu, Lauren and Kolo Toure were among his finest acquisitions.

When they were winning trophies he was the supreme talent-spotter, well ahead of the rest in England.

Wenger said: ‘People want to see the next Lionel Messi – they don’t want to see a promising guy. The name of the player gives people hope, but when they haven’t heard of them people are already sceptical.

‘It’s much more difficult for us now. The competition is higher. We are trying to diversify a bit more because we are limited in England. A new market that is very interesting is Japan – it’s very competitive.

‘The country where we were really competitive in the past was France, but they produce less top players than they did, say, 15 years ago.

‘The emerging countries look to be Germany and Spain – they have taken over from France and they have many good, young players.’

One of them, Lewis Holtby, plays in Germany for Schalke 04 and Wenger admitted on Thursday that he is interested in signing him.

Holtby, 22, has made it clear that he will not be signing a new contract at the Veltins-Arena and will be leaving at the end of the season on a free transfer. Wenger added: ‘We have looked at him, yes,’ but that is as far as he would be drawn on the Germany midfielder.

He also admitted that Chelsea’s latest recruit, Demba Ba, was a target last summer, but he opted instead for Montpellier forward Olivier Giroud.

Wenger said: ‘It was Giroud or Demba Ba in the summer — they are very similar players. I was a bit cautious about the noises on Ba’s knee injury, but someone told me the problem he has is manageable and can be prevented.’

Wenger has other targets in January, but Arsenal are being out-manoeuvred by Manchester United in the chase for Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha.

In terms of trophy-winning potential, Arsenal cannot compete with United and they are aware that Zaha is right at the top of Sir Alex Ferguson’s wishlist.

With Theo Walcott expected to sign a new contract with Arsenal in the coming weeks, it may be that Wenger’s interest in the Championship’s best young player fades.

Instead he will turn to the Continent again, reminding his scouts that the demand at Arsenal is to sign only the best talent.

Wenger conceded on Thursday that although he was aware of Michu before he signed for Swansea in the summer, he didn’t realise quite what a threat he would prove in the Premier League.

On Sunday the Gunners will come across him again when they travel to the Liberty Stadium for their FA Cup third-round tie against Swansea.

Wenger added: ‘Honestly, Michu was not on our radar. You needed to have really deep knowledge of the market in Spain to do that. Michael Laudrup did because he has the connections.

‘We keep our scouts alert, but when you are a big club like Arsenal your scouts are a little bit more cautious about players.

‘Naturally they are less likely to look at players with smaller clubs. But what Michu is doing is not accidental. He is a really good player.’

Maradona watched Aguero and Co defeat bitter rivals Manchester United 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium in April this year. Captain Vincent Kompany scored the winner.

The Premier League’s extraordinary global TV rights tender has enjoyed its biggest percentage rise in Thailand, where the next three-year contract is approaching seven times more than the current deal.

Cable network CTH have paid 200million for Premier League content from next season compared with the 30m the Thailand, Laos and Cambodia territory brought in last time round.

This keeps the PL on course to reach the 5billion landmark which Sports Agenda was first to mention as an achievable target.

However, Thailand has been a less happy hunting ground for other football connections. Dave Solomons, one of the founder drivers of First Class Cars who chauffeur PL staff, FA personnel, England players and elite group referees, is serving a four-year sentence in a Bangkok jail for possession of a Class A drug.

And a number of former referees including David Elleray, Graham Barber, Dermot Gallagher and Rob Styles — as well as former England manager Sven Goran Eriksson — have invested heavily in a Thailand real estate deal on the island of Koh Samui that has yet to be developed because of political wrangling.

Johnson sidelined

It is now over a year since England’s rugby union team imploded on and off the pitch in New Zealand. And former England coach Martin Johnson, who paid the price with his job, has yet to emerge from that meltdown.

Apart from a small amount of coaching for Austin Healey and Will Greenwood’s rugby travel business, World Cup-winning captain Johnson has spent a lot more time than expected at his holiday home in Devon.

Lancaster needs results

Stuart Lancaster impressed the Leaders in Football conference with his blueprint for the culture change in England rugby after the World Cup debacle.

But if the upcoming matches against South Africa and New Zealand bring two more home defeats following the woeful showing against Australia, the sense of Lancaster lecturing the likes of Charles van Commenee on sporting excellence so soon in his England coaching career will be called into question.

And the flawed RFU structure, which has no experienced man at Twickenham for Lancaster to lean on when his team struggle, was identified by perceptive football manager Aidy Boothroyd at the conference. Northampton Town boss Boothroyd asked Lancaster who he turns to within the set-up for rugby advice and the answer was that he tries to think problems through for himself.

FIFA responded to yet more corruption allegations surrounding Qatar’s successful bid for the 2022 World Cup by asking American Michael J Garcia — chairman of the investigatory branch of the ethics committee — to examine the evidence.

Charlie Beljan wins in Florida

Beljan wins first PGA Tour event just two days after fearing he would DIE

PGA Tour rookie Charlie Beljan clung on for his maiden victory at the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic – just two days after being taken to hospital following a reported panic attack.

Beljan was hospitalised after complaining of shortness of breath and an elevated heart rate during his second-round 64, and told pgatour.com: 'I thought I literally had a chance to die.'

He defied medical advice by continuing in the tournament, and justified his decision with a two-stroke win after finishing on 16 under par at Magnolia Golf Club.

Beljan pulled clear with four successive birdies from the seventh, putts of 17 feet at the seventh and 29 at the ninth sandwiching a tap-in at the eighth where he hit his approach to a foot.

He picked up further shots at 10 and 12 to lead by five strokes but then came back to the field when he double-bogeyed the straightforward 13th after dumping his tee-shot in the water.

He bounced back with his eighth birdie of the round at the next and despite a closing bogey, a round of 69 was enough for victory.

Matt Every and Robert Garrigus finished joint second on 14 under after final rounds of 68, with Brian Gay a further shot back after shooting 70.

A group of four players sharing fifth place on 12 under included Boo Weekley – enough to earn him a top-125 place on the season's money list, and with it a tour card for next year.

Tim Herron tied for ninth on 11 under to jump from 138th to 124th as he and Beljan replaced Billy Mayfair and Rod Pampling in the top 125 – but Jerry Kelly, also in that group, missed out by one place.

Kevin Chappell held on for the final qualifying spot after Charlie Wi and Josh Teater each finished their round with pars to stay at 12 under. Had either dropped a shot, Kelly would have tied for eighth instead of ninth and edged out Chappell.

Beljan's win lifts him from 139th to 63rd and also earns him a two-year exemption on the Tour.

He told pgatour.com: 'What a joy. This is the greatest feeling ever.

'Those five birdies in six holes made things a little bit easier. And then I threw a double bogey in there on the easiest hole on the golf course, but my thinking was I knew I had a five-shot lead.

'I made double and I actually wasn't even upset about it at all, because I still had a three-shot lead with four or five to play on a Sunday on the PGA Tour and that was all I thought about.'

Discussing the panic attack symptoms, he added: “This morning I woke up and I felt horrible again. It must be a blessing in disguise because all I think about is whether I'm going to play or not. I don't think about the task at hand.

'My wife was kind enough to go sleep in the other room with the baby, so I got a great night's sleep. I woke up, I had a pounding headache and my stomach was hurting.

'But I felt great on the golf course, other than my heart was coming out of my chest and I was just trying to get through. But physically, I felt wonderful.

'(Today it was) for a great reason – Friday it was coming out of my chest for a bad reason.'

Eden Hazard was wanted at Reading before Chelsea signing – Brian McDermott

McDermott: Reading wanted Hazard before Chelsea… but we had no chance!

Just warming up: Eden Hazard in training

Brian McDermott doesn’t need anybody to tell him about the mercurial talents of Eden Hazard —he found them for himself on a dark, cold November night nearly six years ago.

Reading’s manager was working as the club’s chief scout and used to take himself off on the Channel ferry for weekend jaunts to France — about as near as the Madejski Stadium budget then got to a continental network.

‘I would go to three games over the weekend starting on Friday night and one of them on this particular trip was at Lille,’ he recalled.

‘Hazard was just playing his first games in the team. He was still only 16, I think. I hadn’t gone there to see him, just to take in the fixture, but he stood out within minutes like the proverbial sore thumb.

Fantasy football 2012

‘He could just go down the side of people — and on either side — and he had such great, quick feet.

‘I earned my living then by wandering in search of players, and I might have asked about him, but no way was he available. I remember discovering Marouane Fellaini when he was still a teenager, too, and being quoted 7million.

‘These guys know when they have a special talent on their hands — you can’t turn up at a place like Lille and just go, “We’ll take your best player”. It just doesn’t happen.’

Fast forward to 2012 and it is Chelsea who have finally prised away the 21-year-old, already capped 29 times by Belgium, and been forced to cough up 32m for the privilege.

McDermott will get a close-up of exactly how the talent he spotted — but couldn’t afford — has matured when he takes Reading to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

He said: ‘Everyone in Europe knew what a talent he was going to be. How old is he Just 21 He’s incredible.

‘I went to see Chelsea’s game at Wigan on Sunday and he was terrific. Not just him but also Juan Mata, you saw the little interplays between the two of them — and then they could bring on Oscar too.

‘It seems like he’s a good lad and is going to handle the physicality of the League no problem. I gather he’s said he isn’t frightened of being kicked out of the Premier League, but you can’t do that now anyway.

‘Going back to when I played you could, but in this day and age, thank God, there isn’t a place for it. Make one tackle now and you get booked. In a way that’s why the flair players thrive and that’s a good thing.

‘But don’t think we don’t go there thinking we can win. We’ll have a way of playing.

‘I’m not going to give my team away, but we have always at Reading tried to take each game on its merits and try to do the best for our team. We will have a plan, we do that for everybody.’

The experienced German will head up the club's European network in an overall structure that has been developed over the past two years.
As part of the move he is reunited with Villa manager Paul Lambert who is a former Dortmund player.

Henke said: 'This is a similar role to one I held at Bayern when Jurgen Klinsmann became manager and I am looking forward to helping identify players who will enhance Villa.

'Our objective will be to identify young players who have a good future and a good mentality.

'The Bundesliga has good youth Academies but our analysis of players will include other leagues, including Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, France, Spain and other countries.'

Lambert said: 'It's great to have a man with Michael's experience and track record to come in to this role and I'm delighted that we've been able to bring him here.

'Michael has been successful with two great clubs in Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, working with Ottmar Hitzfeld, and together bringing Champions League success and a succession of Bundesliga titles to both clubs.

'In the European game he has an unbelievable wealth of experience and an enviable network of contacts. It's a great thing for Villa that we have been able to attract a man of his calibre.'

Arsenal are plotting a shock move for
Celtic midfielder Ki Sung-yeung after rubber-stamping their
16.5million move for Santi Cazorla.

Gunners spies were alerted to the South Korea international’s talents while on scouting assignments in Scotland last season.

The club’s scouting network have kept

Steven Gerrard in his homeland — during the Olympic Games and have been
suitably impressed.

Olympic quarter-finals on Saturday, is also wanted by Queens Park

Arsenal are also interested in Ki’s club team-mate Victor Wanyama, who was watched by Wenger’s scouts in Celtic’s recent pre-season defeat by Norwich.

Meanwhile, Arsenal confirmed the

27-year-old got straight down to business training with his new
team-mates at their pre-season camp in Germany.

The
Spain international — who was joined in Germany by Robin van Persie —
has revealed that two former Arsenal stars played a key role in his
decision to join the club.

Cazorla said: ‘I believe that it’s a
great club. Everyone who has played here, such as Robert Pires and Cesc
Fabregas, has spoken very highly about the club.

‘I think it’s one of the greatest clubs in Europe, they are always
fighting for silverware and just for those reasons it is worth trying to
play at this club and in the Premier League.

‘There was already some interest (from Arsenal) a few seasons ago. I
remember when I signed for Malaga there was already an interest from
Arsenal.

‘It was always a club I liked very much. Because of circumstances in
football, things have not gone the way we wanted in Malaga this year but
now I am going to have the opportunity to experience the Premier
League and to be at a big club.

‘I could not miss this opportunity — I am 27 years old so it was the last train I could catch.’

However, Arsenal are only likely to follow through with their interest
in Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin if they sell Alex Song this
summer.

Arsenal have toyed with the idea of launching a loan move for the Turkey
international as Wenger looks to increase his midfield options.

But it is understood Wenger will only move for Sahin if they lose Song, who is a target for Barcelona.

UEFA charged the Spanish and Russian football associations on Tuesday for racist chants by fans at the European Championship.

The charges follow reports that
monkey noises were directed by Spain fans at Italy forward Mario
Balotelli, and that Russian fans targeted Czech Republic defender
Theodor Gebre Selassie. Both players are black.

UEFA said it opened disciplinary cases for 'improper conduct of their supporters (racist behavior, racist chanting).'

The European football body said its disciplinary panel will deal with the cases Thursday.

Spain and Russia will likely receive financial penalties if the cases are proven.

Still, UEFA has threatened Russia with a six-point deduction in its 2016 European Championship qualifying group after some fans attacked stadium stewards in Wroclaw following the Czech match on June 8.

UEFA has said the deduction would be enforced if fans repeated their violent behavior.

In the first proven case of racist abuse at Euro 2012, UEFA fined the Croatia football association (euro) 80,000 ($100,000) for a range of charges including insults directed at Balotelli.

Discrimination monitors appointed by UEFA reported that around 300 Croatia supporters made monkey noises at the Italy forward during a June 14 match in Poznan.

A Spanish fans' group previously reported that some Spain followers made monkey noises at Balotelli during a June 10 match in Gdansk. The group, affiliated to the Football Supporters Europe network, said other Spanish fans intervened urging the offenders to stop.

Gebre Selassie acknowledged that he was racially abused by Russians during the opening group match but declined to file a complaint.

UEFA received reports from monitors supplied by FARE, a Europe-wide fans' network, and later asked Czech team officials to help provide evidence which could be used to prosecute the case.

Blackburn's new football chief Shebby Singh has indicated that manager Steve Kean will keep his job at Ewood Park – little more than a month after publicly calling for him to be axed.

Singh took up his new role this week and will help to oversee Blackburn’s transfer policy and scouting network as well as acting as global advisor to the club’s owners Venky’s.

Kean’s position has been under threat since he returned from a series of meetings in India with his future undecided following Blackburn’s relegation from the Premier League last season.

‘At this moment it is going to be
difficult for the fans to think nothing has changed but we would like to
regroup and try to take this team forward.’

However, Singh’s assurances appeared
to contradict comments the Asian TV pundit made in his column for a
Singapore newspaper on May 9 under the headline ‘Kean must go’.

Singh wrote: ‘Steve Kean is obviously not the man to lead Blackburn Rovers back to the Premiership.

‘They were tactically naive with a
lightweight team that were too easily brushed aside at times. Then,
there were a number of players who were past their prime.

‘But there’s no use wallowing in self-pity and the club need to move on quickly.’

Russia could face disciplinary action over the behaviour of their fans during their European Championship victory over Czech Republic, which was marred by allegations of racism and violence.

It is understood UEFA are considering whether to take action against the Russian Football Federation after anti-racism campaigners claimed Czech defender Theodor Gebre Selassie was the victim of monkey chants during Friday night's Group A game in Wroclaw.

And European football's governing body were also deciding if they would sanction Russia after their fans were caught on camera attacking stewards in a walkway at the Municipal Stadium.

Euro 2012 is only two days old but it is
already in danger of being spoilt by fan behaviour, with two incidents
of alleged monkey chants at stadia inside 48 hours, and numerous reports
of violence across Poland and Ukraine.

The FARE (Football Against Racism in Europe) network today confirmed one
of their observers at last night's Russia-Czech Republic game heard
'fleeting' racist abuse of Gebre Selassie.

Asked if it included monkey chants, FARE chief executive Piara Powar said: 'Our observer reported descriptions of that nature.

'It was directed at the Czech Republic's only black player.'

Powar said the abuse came from a 'small section of the crowd' and
admitted: 'It may not be easy to pull together evidence for a case to be
brought.'

UEFA asked FARE to help appoint expert spotters to report offensive banners, chants and behaviour in stadiums.

Powar also confirmed 'Russian Empire' flags were displayed during Friday night's game, which Russia won 4-1.

The Czech Republic camp were not immediately available for comment but
it is understood they had not made a formal complaint over the alleged

Friday night was the second time in two days black players were said to

Violence also erupted at the Russia-Czech Republic game when a handful
of stewards were attacked by large group of fans inside the

Footage of the incident has emerged online and UEFA said in a statement:
'UEFA is aware that at yesterday's Group A match in Wroclaw between
Russia and the Czech Republic there was a brief and isolated incident
involving a small group of around 30 fans who attacked a handful of
stewards.

'The situation was quickly and efficiently brought under control. The local police are aware of the incident and investigating.

'The cause of the incident is not currently known but we are studying the security reports and available images.

'UEFA remains entirely committed to the safety and security of all fans and spectators at all matches of Euro 2012.'

Police spokesman Mariusz Sokolowski was reported by Eurosport to have said: 'I can confirm that this happened at the stadium.

'The attackers were from the group of Russian language fans. We are trying to identify them.

'Police have the security footage from the stadium. We are looking into it.'
Reports claimed four members of stadium staff were taken to hospital and released later that evening.

The footage shows one steward left in a heap on the ground after being
set upon by several assailants before the violence dissipated and he is
helped to his feet, while another is kicked in the head while trying to
evade a lone attacker.
