Roy Hodgson is set to be dealt an injury blow with the news that Jack Wilshere could miss both of England's internationals this summer.

The Arsenal star, who came of the bench for the remaining 19 minutes of his side's 1-0 win at Fulham yesterday, is poised to undergo surgery at the end of the season.

BABY LOVE

Wilshere is set to become a dad for the second time later this year. The Arsenal midfielder's partner, Lauren Neal, is expecting in October.

Wilshere has only recently returned to first-team action after a six-week injury lay-off.

And according to the Sunday Mirror, the 21-year-old may now require surgery to replace a pin inserted into his ankle during an operation in 2011.

That would leave Roy Hodgson without Wilshere for the friendlies against Republic of Ireland on May 29 and June 2.

Arsene Wenger meanwhile has blasted Steve Sidwell for the reckless tackle which earned him a red card in Arsenal's vital win over Fulham.

Sidwell will miss Fulham's last four games of the season after he saw red for the second time in two appearances.

The former Arsenal midfielder, who was given a straight red for a dangerous tackle on QPR defender Armand Traore three weeks ago, caught Mikel Arteta on his standing foot with a two-footed lunge just 12 minutes in to this afternoon's London derby at Craven Cottage.

Wenger also ended the game with 10 men after Olivier Giroud caught Stanislav Manolev with a last-minute lunge.

The Gunners boss had no qualms with Giroud's sending off, and that of Sidwell, which he thinks could have caused serious injury to Arteta had it happened a millisecond earlier.

'I think the referee could only give a red card (to Sidwell),' the Arsenal manager said.

'We will see (if Arteta is OK). He played the second-half. I don't know how much damage is done. It is a kick, a bad kick.

'I don't know if he has twisted his ankle or not. In these kind of things it is a question of a fraction of a second.

'If you are fully on your foot at the moment you get it you break your leg. If you ease a bit off maybe that is why he got away with it.'

Back to Britain: McGeady is set to return

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez is hoping to push through a late 5million move for Republic of Ireland winger Aiden McGeady.

Sportsmail revealed last week that the Latics were looking to bring in McGeady on loan from Spartak Moscow, but now the Daily Mirror are reporting that the two clubs have agreed a fee for a permanent deal.

McGeady will have to take a pay cut from the 70,000-a-week wage he earns in the Russian capital, but the former Celtic man is thought to be keen on a move back to Britain.

The 26-year-old has 18 months left on his contract at Spartak and the
club are ready to cash in on the man they paid for 9.5m for back in August 2010.

Steven Gerrard was heralded as Liverpool's greatest player ever by team-mate Jamie Carragher after the England captain was honoured by the Football Writers' Association at a gala tribute dinner in London.

The 32-year-old midfielder collected the prestigious accolade from FWA chairman Andy Dunn, of the Sunday Mirror.

Tributes were paid by former manager Gerard Houllier, who brought Gerrard into the Liverpool first team as a raw youngster, and his long-serving team-mate Carragher, while former Reds boss Kenny Dalglish also passed on his congratulations as he was unable to attend.

Carragher is in no doubt of Gerrard's place among Anfield legends. 'I think we are in the presence of the greatest player ever to play for Liverpool,' said Carragher.

'People will say I am biased because we are good friends and because of the trophies we have won together, but it is a fair accolade to give him.

'There are guys like Kenny [Dalglish], Graeme Souness, Ian Rush, all world-class players, but the difference was they were in a world-class team – and Stevie has not played in a world-class team.'

Carragher added: 'Stevie's one strength is he has no weakness, he can run, tackle pass and score goals.

'Football is a team game, but special players do special things at special times, and that is Steven Gerrard.'

Former Liverpool striker Rush and England manager Roy Hodgson were among the guests at The Savoy, along with current Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.

The one-time England international, however, is determined to stay at Upton Park and was said to be disappointed when he learned of the club's plans to cash-in on him, according to the Daily Mirror.

Cole's contract expires this summer and West Ham have added Marouane Chamakh and Wellington Paulista to their growing contingent of on-loan strikers this month with Andy Carroll soon to be fit again.

Cole has scored twice in 19 games this season and manager Sam Allardyce prefers both Chamakh and Carroll, despite Carroll scoring just once in 14 games for the east Londoners.

The 29-year-old moved to Upton Park from Chelsea in 2006 after loan spells at Wolves, Charlton and Aston Villa.

West Ham have also been linked with Manchester City striker John Guidetti.

City are keen for him to gain Premier League experience but Southampton and Fiorentina are also interested in the 20-year-old striker.

Chelsea defender Ashley Cole has been targeted by BOTH Real Madrid and PSG for a big-money move.

The Spanish and French giants will lead the European battle for Cole's signature, according to the Sunday Mirror, although he could keep his options open.

The 32-year old's contract is due to expire at the end of the season and both Manchester City and Manchester United will be keeping tabs on his situation.

On the move Cole's Chelsea future remains undecided

Cole only has to wait until Tuesday until he can begin talks with overseas clubs, and if Cole is angling for a move away from Stamford Bridge, can sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign outfit or wait until the summer when he can negotiate his own terms, on a free transfer.

Its thought both La Liga champions Real and cash-flushed PSG will offer Cole three-year deals.

He has stayed tight-lipped on his own future but is thought to be prepared to consider an offer if Chelsea can improve on their one-year extension, which was snubbed.

Wanted man: Holtby has signalled his intention to leave Schalke

Schalke midfielder Lewis Holtby will talk with Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham in January to discuss a possible move in the summer.

The Germany Under 21 captain has refused his club's offer of a new deal and his immediate ambition is to move to the Premier League.

All three English clubs are fighting for the midfielder and will be queuing up to open talks in the new year, according to the Mirror.

The 22-year old already has British
connections; his father is English and Holtby was eligible to play for
England before he declared for his country of birth, Germany.

Schalke has been a key scouting
territory for Arsenal this season and Holtby featured in their group
stage clashes in the Champions League.

The Bundeliga outfit were hoping he would follow another Arsenal target, Holland striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar, in committing his future to the club, but board member Horst Heldt was forced to concede defeat.

The lively Alexandra Palace crowd will crank it up a notch on Thursday night when Paul Lim strolls up to the oche – 22 years after throwing the first televised nine-dart game at the World Championship.

Lim's life changed forever when he scooped 52,000 for the perfect leg against Jack McKenna at the Lakeside in 1990.

'I’ll never forget the nine-darter. All these years later, people still ask me about it – but it’s nice to be remembered for that moment because it was a bit of darts history,' Lim told the Daily Mirror.

'Whenever I came over to the UK and Europe on business in the last few years, people recognised me as ‘the nine-dart guy’ and it changed my life in terms of recognition.

'I was a good player, but never in the class of Phil Taylor or Eric Bristow. People remember me as Paul Lim, the nine-dart guy, not as a darts player.

'I’ll never forget the moment I raised my hands in the air. That will stay with me forever.'

Singapore-born Lim took up the game at Chiswick's Robin Hood pub when he worked in London as a chef. He then moved to Papua New Guinea before going to America and turning professional.

The prize he scooped for his big moment at Frimley Green was used to start an electronics business.

Lim added: 'I made good use of the money because my son is running the business now.'

The 58-year-old faces a prelim qualifier against Mohd Latif Sapup to earn a crack at Michael van Gerwen

'I have nothing to lose – I have played for 38 years and I am very blessed that I can just go out there and enjoy myself,' he said.

'I’ve felt very at ease coming here. My heart doesn’t usually beat any faster when I’m on stage, but this time might be different.'
