Portugal coach Paulo Bento has called up Real Betis full-back Nelson for Tuesday's World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland following an injury to Fabio Coentrao.

Real Madrid left-back Coentrao limped out of Friday night's match in Russia after 20 minutes and will miss the visit of Northern Ireland to the Estadio do Dragao, Portugal have confirmed in a statement on their website, www.fpf.pt.

Midfielder Raul Meireles also picked up an injury during training on Thursday but Bento has decided not to call up a replacement for him, instead making do with the remaining 22 players at his disposal.

Portugal lost their 100 per cent start to their World Cup qualifying campaign after going down 1-0 to Russia and are now second in Group F, three points behind the Russians after three games.

Northern Ireland are fourth with one point from two games.

Joey Barton was in the thick of it on his home debut for French side Marseille. The QPR outcast was booked in a 5-1 Europa League win over AEL Limassol, and had a spat with visiting keeper Matias Degra.

The Queens Park Rangers loanee started the match at the Velodrome, and saw his side go a goal down to the minnows.

But Barton and Marseille battled back well, and in the end they cruised to an easy victory in Group C.

However, Rubin Kazan kept pace with the Italians with a 2-0 home win over Partizan Belgrade.

The Belgians had looked well on their way to another win in the other Group G game as they led Basel 2-0 in Switzerland through an early Benjamin De Ceulaer strike and a second from Jelle Vossen.

But the hosts hit bacredk to claim a point in a 2-2 draw thanks to a second half double from Marco Streller, the first of which came from the penalty spot.

In Group I, Gueida Fofana scored twice, including an injury-time winner, as Lyon earned their second straight win with a thrilling 4-3 triumph over Hapoel Kiryat Shmona in Israel.

Shimon Abuhatzira put the home side in front after just seven minutes before Fofana, Fabian Monzon and Anthony Reveillere put the Frenchmen well in control at the break.

Hapoel clawed back level through Lior Levi and Abuhatzira but when they thought they had done enough to take a point, Fofana struck two minutes into added time.

'I had a great season playing at Liverpool with Kuyt. He told me about Fenerbahce and encouraged me to make the move.

Chelsea 4 Reading 2: Torres breaks Royals resistance but visitors rage over offside call

|

UPDATED:

20:42 GMT, 22 August 2012

Fernando Torres broke Reading hearts with an 81st-minute strike from what clearly looked like an offside position as Chelsea came from behind to beat a spirited Reading at Stamford Bridge.

Frank Lampard had put the European champions in front from the penalty spot after just 18 minutes but a brilliant glancing header from Pavel Pogrebnyak dragged the Royals level seven minutes later. And Brian McDermott's side took a shock lead into the half-time break as Danny Guthrie's free-kick squirmed through Petr Cech.

A second goalkeeping howler of the game saw Chelsea draw level with 21 minutes remaining, as Gary Cahill's 35-yard shot somehow beating Adam Federici before Torres popped up in the box to tap home Ashley Cole's pass.

And with Reading desperately chasing an equaliser, Branislav Ivanovic stroked the ball into an empty net with Federici up the field following a corner.

Napoli have set their sights on Chelsea midfielder Raul Meireles.

The Italian club are looking to bolster their squad after selling striker Ezequiel Lavezzi to Paris Saint-Germain.

Meireles, who joined Chelsea on
deadline day last summer after a single season at Liverpool, caught the eye as the Blues overcame Napoli on route to Champions League glory last season.

He has backed that up with some impressive displays at Euro 2012 as
Portugal have progressed to the semi-finals, where they play holders
Spain on Wednesday night.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has made contact with Meireles' agents over a 8m move, reports the Daily Mirror.

Meireles, however, is delaying any decision on his future.

The 29-year-old said: 'I am focused on the Euros and cannot think about my future now.'

Spain's Cesc Fabregas insists Portugal will be tough semi-final opponents at Euro 2012.

The Barcelona midfielder saw his compatriot Xabi Alonso score both goals as they beat France to reach the last four on Sunday night.

Spain will now go head to head with Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal in Donetsk on Wednesday for a place in the final four days later.

Fabregas said: 'They have strong individuals, strong players. Apart from their good open play, they are very good on the counter-attack, and we'll have to work hard in that game.

'They have Ronaldo, Nani, Raul Meireles, Joao Moutinho. They have very good players.'

Fabregas was pleased with Spain's performance against Laurent Blanc's side.

'We played really well in the first half – actually one of the best first halves in the tournament,' said the former Arsenal captain, who led Spain's attack with Fernando Torres starting on the bench.

'I played a bit better, but we were playing against France, who played very well. We are very happy now. I tried hard, and I ran a lot. I feel good. No matter what happens, the most important thing is that Spain won.'

Meanwhile, Alonso insisted helping his team reach the semi-finals of Euro 2012 was more important than winning his 100th cap.

The former Liverpool man played a big part in ensuring the defending champions overcame Les Bleus 2-0 with a first-half header and a late penalty in Donetsk.

He said: 'We're through to the semi-finals, which was the main thing. We're pleased about that. The 100 caps is just an extra.

'It's in these matches that we have to show what we're about. We controlled it from start to finish. The team made things easy.

'I was happy about my 100th game and the goals. We know every game is difficult now but we're in the semi-finals and we're going to give it everything.

'We controlled the match, though we knew it wouldn't be easy against opponents that were defending deep.

'It became easier after the goal. It was a big quarter-final game and you have to know how to play them.'

Cristiano Ronaldo headed Portugal into the semi-finals of the European Championships at the expense of the Czech Republic in Warsaw.

The Real Madrid forward had twice hit the woodwork and seen his side have a goal chalked out for offside before he arrived on cue in the six-yard box to nod in Joao Moutinho's cross on 79 minutes.

The Czechs – with captain Tomas Rosicky, the Arsenal midfielder, only on the bench because of an achilles injury – had started brightly, but lacked a decisive move in the final third.

It had been a decent opening from
Michal Bilek's side as Petr Jiracek drilled the ball in from 20 yards,
but his effort was blocked by Real Madrid defender Pepe.

Portugal coach Paulo Bento named an
unchanged side having beaten Holland to qualify behind Germany out of
the 'Group of Death' for the last eight.

Manchester United winger Nani and
Madrid star Ronaldo, who would miss the semi-final if he picked up
another caution, were the most lively for the Portuguese.

On 17 minutes, the Czech Republic, who
overcame a 4-1 defeat in their opening game against Russia to win Group
A, broke quickly down the right and Vladimir Darida whipped over a low
cross through the six-yard box, which Galatasaray striker Milan Baros
just failed to connect with.

Ronaldo was played into the Czech box,
holding off Michal Kadlec, and drilled the ball goalwards with Chelsea
keeper Petr Cech making a smart save. However, English referee Howard
Webb had blown for a foul by the Portugal forward, who could not believe
the decision against him.

On 26 minutes, Nani went into the Yorkshireman's notebook after tripping David Limbersky.

The game was starting to open up as
Czech full-back Theodor Gebre Selassie cut in from the right and
crossed, with Pepe again alert to clear the danger.

At the other end, Ronaldo – who netted a brace against the Dutch – went close with an overhead kick at the far post.

The former Manchester United forward was then just off target again with an ambitious long-range free-kick.

Portugal were forced into a change six
minutes before half-time when striker Helder Postiga pulled up with
what appeared to be a hamstring problem, and was replaced by 6ft 3in
Besiktas frontman Hugo Almeida.

Nani claimed for a penalty after going
down in the box under close attention from Limbersky, but the referee
was unconvinced, with TV replays showing the United forward slipped
rather than was pushed.

Portugal continued to press and
Ronaldo was within inches of a spectacular opening goal when he
collected a high ball into the box on his chest, swivelled around marker
Kadlec and crashed the ball past Cech – only for it to strike the base
of the near post.

There was another great chance for
Portugal at the start of the second half, when Almeida headed over from
12 yards after being picked out by Raul Meireles' cross.

On 50 minutes, Ronaldo was denied by
the woodwork again as this time his 30-yard free-kick clipped the
outside of the far post with Cech beaten.

The Chelsea keeper then had to parry
away a 25-yard strike from Nani, and only an offside flag prevented
Portugal taking a deserved lead on 57 minutes when Almeida glanced in
the United winger's cross.

The Czechs produced a counter-attack
when Vaclav Pilar charged down the left and into the penalty area, only
to produce a poor final pass, which was hacked clear.

Portugal were soon back on the offensive as Moutinho's dipping 25-yard effort was tipped over.

Kadlec was then left in a heap after being clattered by goalkeeper Cech, who punched clear at the edge of the penalty area.

The Chelsea man's goal was leading a charmed life, as Nani's floated ball was deflected behind.

Ronaldo finally broke the deadlock on 79 minutes, when he sent a diving header past Cech from Moutinho's right-wing cross.

Portugal continued to pour forwards, with Cech beating away an angled 25-yard effort from full-back Joao Pereira.

Ronaldo went down under a challenge
from Gebre Selassie and, although he appeared to be caught by the Czech
defender, referee Webb again waved play on.

Portugal saw out four minutes of
stoppage time to secure their place in the semi-finals, where they will
face either Spain or France.

Luiz used his Twitter account to keep fans updated with their journey and midfielder Ramires (who misses out on Saturday through suspension) and striker Didier Drogba were happy to pose for a snap.

Chelsea eventually touched down just after midday before heading to the plush team hotel in the centre of Munich.

A more serious-looking Frank Lampard can be seen in the background and the midfielder has urged English football to embrace a more German approach.

England and Germany are among the fiercest rivals in the international game but Lampard is full of admiration for the way the latter goes about their business.

Lampard, who played alongside former Germany talisman Michael Ballack for four years at Chelsea, added: 'He was one of those players who you could probably take the wrong way in the beginning, but he was so determined, confident and wanted to win.

'The German teams I have played against all seem to have that individually. That's why they will be such a force at the Euros as well this summer.

'They are very technically intelligent. Maybe it's the set-up and the system they have with the young kids there.

'We talk about England and what we need to do – the Spanish have shown it, the French have shown it and the Germans with their under-21s.'

Bayern are the flagship German club and Lampard was under no illusions about the task facing Chelsea, branding it 'a huge challenge'.

He added: 'They have great players up front – I've watched them a few times.

'(Mario) Gomez's goal record is amazing and his all-round game and his finishing is fantastic. And the wingers we all know about anyway.

'In (Toni) Kroos and (Bastian) Schweinsteiger, they have two fantastic midfield players.

'I can't speak highly enough of them actually. Kroos has come on and really impressed me. And then (Thomas) Muller played behind the front man.

'It's going to be a battleground because they are very strong in there.'

Bayern have been weakened by three suspensions for Saturday's clash but Chelsea have been affected by four, including to centre-backs John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic.

But Lampard was confident the fit-again Gary Cahill and David Luiz would fill the void.

He said: 'John is obviously the captain and a top defender but we're fortunate that in Gary and David looking like they are going to be fit, we have good cover.

'A lot of teams losing their centre-halves would not be so confident but I'm pretty confident in them.

'And then Ashley Cole – say no more, you know what you get from him. And whoever we play at right-back, Jose Bosingwa or Paulo Ferreira.

'We have to be on our game to stop them but I have confidence in the players to do it.'

John Terry and Raul Meireles put their Champions League agony aside as Chelsea warmed up for Saturday's final by winning their last Barclays Premier League game of the season.

Terry and Meireles – who are suspended for next weekend's clash with Bayern Munich – both found the net within three first-half minutes against already-relegated Blackburn.

Ayegbeni Yakubu's 18th goal of the season halved the deficit but Chelsea ended their poor league campaign on a high in what could be caretaker manager Roberto Di Matteo and striker Didier Drogba's final home game at the club.

The supporters made their feeling
about the pair clear by chanting 'There's only one Di Matteo' and
'Didier Drogba, we want you to stay', but that may not be enough to
convince billionaire owner Roman Abramovich to sign them up.

Di Matteo rested all of his likely
line-up for the Champions League final, with his other two suspended
players – Ramires and Branislav Ivanovic – also starting, while Romelu
Lukaku and Sam Hutchinson made their full league debuts.

The Italian, who may need to win next
weekend to keep his job, picked a team that emphasised the dead-rubber
nature of today's match, with Chelsea already guaranteed sixth position
and relegated Rovers 19th.

But there were a few players in the
Blues side playing for places in Saturday's squad, one of whom, Florent
Malouda, caused chaos in the Blackburn box with a fine cross inside two
minutes.

Goalkeeper Ross Turnbull then went a
little way to redeeming his performance in Tuesday's 4-1 thrashing at
Liverpool with a fine tip over from Jason Lowe's deflected drive.

A poor touch onto a ball over the top
let down Daniel Sturridge, Lukaku misdirected a header from a corner
and also failed to bundle his way past Blackburn debutant Jake Kean as
Chelsea continued to threaten.

Kean denied Lukaku again in the 20th
minute with a fine save as he slid in to convert a low cross from
Sturridge, who got his header all wrong moments later from the Belgian's
cross.

Half-hearted chants of 'Kean out!'
were directed at Blackburn boss Steve Kean throughout the opening
quarter, with Chelsea in complete control.

A goal looked inevitable and it
arrived in the 31st minute after Terry decided to get involved in the
Blackburn half before bursting into the box to power a header from
Lukaku's excellent cross into the top corner.

It was 2-0 three minutes later as
Michael Essien got around the back of the Blackburn defence far too
easily before squaring for Meireles to drill into the bottom corner from
18 yards.

Lukaku nearly set up a third goal six
minutes from half-time when Kean saved well from Ramires, who almost
danced his way through moments later.

Unlike Kean, Di Matteo was enjoying
vociferous backing from his club's fans, who also applauded the arrival
of Paulo Ferreira for Malouda two minutes before the break.

Blackburn withdrew Formica for Josh
Morris at the restart and the new man arguably had their best chance
when he side-footed tamely at Turnbull.

But Chelsea had already gone close again through a lovely turn and shot from Sturridge, while Lukaku had also dragged wide.

That was the striker's final
significant contribution as Di Matteo sent on Drogba for what could be
the Ivory Coast star's farewell to Stamford Bridge.

A chorus of 'Didier Drogba, we want you to stay,' immediately rang out at Stamford Bridge.

The home fans were silenced on the
hour mark when Yakubu pulled a goal back, glancing home Scott Dann's
header from a Morten Gamst Pedersen corner.

Although they were almost cheering again when Ramires lifted the ball onto the crossbar after pouncing on a loose header.

Kean tipped Sturridge's deflected
half-volley wide before Fernando Torres came on for Hutchinson, and
Pedersen was withdrawn for Ruben Rochina for the final 20 minutes.

David Goodwillie arrived for Yakubu
after Sturridge horribly miscued a volley, the striker making amends
with an excellent cross that just evaded Ryan Bertrand.

Chelsea were cruising to victory, and
although Bertrand was booked in the final minute for tugging back
Olsson, Sturridge should have made the game safe when he chested wide
from three yards.
