Fiorentina have targeted Dimitar Berbatov as the Manchester United striker struggles to find a suitable new club.

The Bulgarian has been told he can leave Old Trafford this summer, but he has already discarded several options and is wary of taking a big step down.

The 31-year-old would consider a move to Italy and his agent has been keen to talk to AC Milan.

But Fiorentina want to underline their ambition by bringing in a high-profile striker to play alongside Stevan Jovetic.

Manchester City and Chelsea remain interested in Montenegro star Jovetic, but the Florence club insist he will not be sold this summer.

United want 8million for Berbatov, who joined for a club record 30.75m from Tottenham in 2008.

Fiorentina are prepared to pay only around half, but hope the price will fall as the transfer deadline approaches.

There is a new buzz at the Serie A club under Vincenzo Montella, especially after the arrival of Alberto Aquilani, Borja Valero and Matias Fernandez, but they cannot offer Berbatov European competition this season.

Manchester City keeper Joe Hart was devastated after he came within inches of sending his team into the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

On the same evening that Barclays Premier League rivals Manchester United lost earlier 5-3 on aggregate to Athletic Bilbao, City staged a second-half fightback against Sporting Lisbon before going out on away goals.

Late drama: Hart meets De Jong's cross with a powerful header

Hart nearly put them through with a header in the sixth minute of stoppage time after they had fallen behind to two first-half goals from Matias Fernandez and Ricky van Wolfswinkel.

Two goals from Sergio Aguero and one from Mario Balotelli made it 3-3 on aggregate before Hart’s late header was tipped round the post by opposite number Rui Patricio.

Hart struggled to come to terms with his near miss as he said:'I can't believe it, I thought it was in,' Hart said.

'It didn't need to get to that, but football is football. The fans were fantastic tonight and we didn't give them what they deserved in the first half.

'Hopefully we can take some positives out of the second half and move on for the rest of the season.'

City now have extra time to recover with their next league game pushed back to Wednesday due to opponents Chelsea playing in the FA Cup on Sunday.

'We need to play well in every game,' Hart added. 'There are not many left now. We've cost ourselves with the first half but if we keep rolling now we'll be all right.

'We're one point behind the leaders of the Premier League, we're a good team and we've got nothing to worry about. We'll go in (against Chelsea) as favourites and we should be favourites.'

City manager Roberto Mancini said: ‘In the first half, we didn’t play, and that was down to me. ‘I’m proud of my players because they fought on the pitch, but I gave them (Sporting) a lot of space to counter attack in the first half and we conceded two goals.’

Manchester City crashed out of the Europa League on the away goals rule despite an heroic second-half comeback after falling two goals behind before the break.

Sporting opened the scoring with a stunning free-kick from Matias Fernandez. The Portuguese outfit soon doubled their lead, with Ricky van Wolfswinkel netting from close-range before the break.

With City facing an embarrassing exit, Roberto Mancini's team-talk worked wonders. His side pulled back into contention through Sergio Aguero, and Mario Balotelli restored parity on the night with a cool penalty.

Aguero hit his second of the game with eight minutes remaining to set up a barnstorming finish, but Sporting held firm to claim their place in the last eight.

Sporting Lisbon have nothing to fear from Manchester City, warns keeper Patricio

Sporting Lisbon have nothing to fear from Manchester City, warns keeper Patricio

Goalkeeper Rui Patricio has warned Manchester City to underestimate Sporting Lisbon at their peril.

The Barclays Premier League leaders are favourites to win their Europa League last-16 tie with the Portuguese side having crushed the country's champions Porto 6-1 in the previous round.

Fourth-placed Sporting trail Porto by 14 points in the Portuguese league and head into the first leg against City at their Jose Alvalade Stadium tomorrow after a shock loss at struggling Setubal last weekend.

But the highly-rated Patricio, who was linked with Manchester United last year, is confident Sporting have the armoury to catch a City side who may be unfamiliar with them by surprise.

The 24-year-old said: 'I don't care whether they know Sporting's players or not – they will get to know them tomorrow. We have no fear. It is 11 against 11 and anything can happen.

'It will be a tough game, City are a very strong team. But we are playing at home, we will be united and will fight for victory until the end.

'We know what went wrong against Setubal and we won't be affected by that. We are professionals, we are an excellent team with quality players.

'We are very united and with grit and ambition I am sure we will be able to beat Manchester City.'

The game could offer Patricio the chance to impress English audiences ahead of a possible move to the Premier League but he insists that is of no concern now.

He said: 'The most important thing now is Sporting. We have to think about Sporting and only tomorrow night's match.'

Coach Ricardo Sa Pinto is equally bullish about his side's prospects against the Premier League leaders.

The Lions had won their previous three games prior to the Setubal loss, including a decisive second leg victory over Legia Warsaw in the previous round.

The former Portugal forward claims to have done his homework on City and is not fazed by their formidable form this season.

He said: 'I know the opponents well. Manchester City are a strong team, they are first in the Premier League – most goals scored, least goals conceded, very strong players in all areas.

'But Sporting are at home, we have no fear. We will be serious and focused and will play our game.

'We also have quality players, internationals. We will overcome. No team is always at 100 per cent in all matches. Manchester City don't have many weaknesses but anything can happen tomorrow.

'We will take advantage of any opportunity we get and if we fulfil our strategy I expect to get a positive result.'
