Juventus have renewed their efforts to sign Liverpool forward Luis Suarez.

The Italian giants, who were interested in recruiting Suarez and Robin van Persie last summer, are in discussions with the Uruguayan's agent about a possible €30m (25.6m) transfer after their previous efforts ended when he extended his Liverpool contract until 2018.

Juve manager Antonio Conte, according to Sportmediaset, is thought to see Suarez as the ideal strike partner for the incoming Fernando Llorente and given the Spaniard is arriving for free has money to spend.

Director general Beppe Marotta confirmed at the weekend that Juve had ended their interest in re-signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic due to concerns over both his age and wage demands and Suarez, 26, would represent a considerably more affordable option.

Any approach for the Uruguay forward has the potential to seriously undermine the plans of Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, who this season has made good progress with his team and has done so largely by focusing on Suarez's talents.

Juventus chief executive Giuseppe Marotta has suggested that Robin van Persie is not worth the 24million Manchester United paid for him.

The Italian giants were among the clubs pursuing the Holland striker as he forced his way out of Arsenal but lost out to United in the race for the 29-year-old's services.

But, despite being disappointed with not securing Van Persie's signature, Marotta said that the club were unwilling to pay such a large fee due to the striker being in the final year of his contract at Arsenal before his move.

Marotta also insisted that the Old Lady were happy with their summer signings, even if none of their buys could boast the class or experience of Van Persie.

'I have regrets about Van Persie, but it would have been a bad choice for the club if we had paid €30million for a player who would have seen his contract expire next year,' Marotta told Tuttosport.

'We are happy with the business we were able to carry out.

'We hit our targets with the acquisition of good, young players with reasonable salaries – (Kwadwo) Asamoah, (Mauricio) Isla and (Sebastian) Giovinco.

'There is another fact which must not be overlooked, the fact that we kept (Claudio) Marchisio and (Arturo) Vidal, who were wanted by Bayern Munich.'

Marotta also confirmed that the club are still pursuing a top-class striker, and that Athletic Bilbao hotshot Fernando Llorente was firmly under consideration.

He said: 'Llorente to Juventus in January If he remains on the market then he is a player that we are interested in.

'In January we will evaluate the whole situation.'

Napoli striker Edinson Cavani and Fiorentina forward Stevan Jovetic are also on Juve's wish-list, but Marotta doubts deals could be done.

He said: 'Who would I choose between Cavani and Jovetic They would both fit comfortably in our side.

'Unfortunately, Cavani has a €60million (47.6m) buy-out clause, so he is unreachable.'

Juventus will turn their attentions to Liverpool forward Luis Suarez as their chase for wantaway Arsenal striker Robin van Persie looks certain to fail.

The Italian giants have been frontrunners in the battle to land the Dutchman's signature after he signalled his intention to leave the Gunners earlier this summer.

But with negotiations stalling, Juve general manager Giuseppe Marotta will launch a surprise bid to lure Suarez from Anfield.

Suarez was dismayed at being booed while playing for Uruguay at the London Olympics and Juve could test Liverpool's resolve to keep hold of him, according to the Mirror.

Van Persie is yet to play for Arsenal since declaring he wanted to leave the club, but has joined the 24-man squad which travelled to Germany on Monday.

Meanwhile, Arsenal's board have once again come under attack from shareholder Alisher Usmanov.

The billionaire, who is the club's second-biggest shareholder behind American Stan Kroenke, criticised the board in an open letter last month and has now told Forbes Magazine's Russian edition that he believes board 'politics' are hampering manager Arsene Wenger's efforts to improve a squad which has not won a trophy since lifting the 2005 FA Cup.

Usmanov said: 'We do not consider just qualifying for the Champions League to be the chief ambition of the club, and with all our hearts we support the team and wish them well for the new season.

'Victory is absolutely not ruled out, but the current politics of the club's management will leave Arsene Wenger and his team with fewer and fewer opportunities in the long run.'

Usmanov insists however that he has no plans to end his association with the club.

'I am a fan and I am not going to sell these shares at any time, since this is the club that I consider the best in the world,' he added.

Juventus will be the first team to meet Arsenal's asking price for Robin van Persie when they bid 20million for the striker in the coming weeks.

The Italians are locked in a battle with Manchester duo City and United for the wantaway Gunners captain, but believe they hold the advantage due to the player's desire not to play for another club in England.

Van Persie released a statement earlier this month in which he questioned the ambition of his current club, a move which effectively brought an end to seven years in north London, during which time he has won just a solitary FA Cup.

As part of the whopping 20m deal, Juventus, who won the Italian title last season, has told the Premier League top scorer's representatives that they will pay him a staggering 190,000 a week, after tax, according to the Mirror newspaper.

The story comes just days after director Giuseppe Marotta appeared to rule the Italians out of the running.

Speaking to Sky Sports Italia, he said: 'Talk of our real interest in him seems excessive to me.

'Van Persie is a great player but Arsenal do not intend to lose him. And you cannot indulge in a player if the owners don't want (to sell).

'A top player is not only judged by how much he costs. It can also mean a player who costs less but on the pitch shows an absolute value.'

However after growing frustrated in their pursuit of other targets, namely Fiorentina's Stevan Jovetic, Juve have reconsidered their stance.

Arsenal remain adamant they will not sell their captain – a year after they did just that when Cesc Fabregas returned to Barcelona for 35m – but know the controversial statement did irreparable damage to the player's reputation among fans.

Van Persie is 29 in August and has just one year left on his contract, meaning those chasing him are yet to make an offer above 15m. All three clubs have had bids rejected.

The Dutch international's questionable fitness record has also been taken into account, with the last 18months the first injury-free period he has enjoyed since moving to Emirates Stadium from Feyenoord in 2004.

City boss Roberto Mancini has grown frustrated by the saga, and spoke out last week against the lack of urgency to get the deal done from within his own club.

And earlier this wee, he said: 'I don't know what will happen with Van Persie because now he is an Arsenal player and I think Arsenal is a top team.

'When you talk about Manchester City, Manchester united and Juventus, it is difficult for a player to choose between these three clubs. If we have a chance to take him, we will try.'

'Although we always felt he was going, he never intimated it until he left. That is disappointing. But he has made his decision.'

Euro 2012: Italy"s Andrea Pirlo puts form down to Juventus move

ReJUVEnated: Pirlo's Italian renaissance down to Turin switch

He has been on top of his game throughout, never more so than against England, but Andrea Pirlo did not dare give the European Championships so much as a passing thought 12 months ago.

Disillusioned by an injury-disrupted campaign at AC Milan, and sensing he was no longer wanted by coach Massimiliano Allegri or influential chief executive Adriano Galliani, he was more concerned about salvaging his club career than adding to his 80 Italy caps.

As he looked round for a new challenge, at just turned 32 and with his best days apparently behind him, takers seemed few and far between. Up the road in Turin, though, Giuseppe Marotta had a hunch.

‘We had put together a good young team and appointed Antonio Conte as coach, but we still needed something extra,’ said Juventus’ chief executive. ‘We wanted a player with a strong personality for the dressing room. Someone who had won many titles and could teach our younger players how to do the same and also how to react when things went against them. Who better than Andrea Pirlo’

Marotta backed his judgement with a contract offer worth three million euros a year over three seasons, and the rest, as opposed to Pirlo’s playing days, is history.

After scoring only once and contributing to just three other goals, in his farewell season at the San Siro, he topped the Serie A assists table, with 13, as Juve secured their first Scudetto in nine years. Marginalised at Milan 12 months earlier, he walked into the Serie A team of the year, just as he did the Italy starting line-up for a Euro ’12 campaign that reaches the semi-final stage against Germany on Thursday night.

Should he replicate the form that kept England on the back foot, in Sunday’s one-sided quarter-final, an already decorated career could be heading for one last highlight. It would be some achievement for a 33-year old, but he knows where the spark came from.

‘What happened with Milan last year wasn’t just their mistake,’ he said. ‘It was down to me as well, because I reached the stage where I felt I needed a new motivation. I needed something to refresh my career, and Juventus was perfect.

‘Here was a young team, set up to recapture past glories at a club with a fantastic tradition. It was the ideal incentive to go into training each day and work at putting the plan into action. You could see it taking shape, and it gave me back my desire to find my best form again.’

If there were doubts in some quarters about the wisdom of a three-year contract for a 30-something Milan cast-off, Conte had none.

Reborn: Pirlo at Juventus

Reborn: Pirlo at Juventus

‘He has been the ultimate professional from day one,’ said the Juve coach. ‘He is in a class of his own, and the difference between his type and players who are merely good is their attitude.

‘Before he’d even played his first game, he came to see me and spoke at great length about how I intended using him. He wanted to know what I expected from him, where he would be operating on the pitch and how the team would be set up. It became quite technical at times, but he understood everything I said.

‘In my experience, there are very few players who can so easily grasp every detail of your tactical concept. Pirlo wants to know everything, and he even corrects me sometimes. When I tell him how we are going to do something, he will occasionally say: “No, why don’t we do it this way” Often, his proposal makes sense, and I take it on board, but if I disagree, he accepts that I have the final say.

‘He is not just a great player but a deep thinker about the game. He doesn’t say much in the dressing room, but when he speaks, the others listen. He has that aura about him.’

Coaching sounds an obvious next step, but Pirlo is unsure. ‘I’m not too enamoured with all the pressure that goes with it,’ he said. ‘My father runs a couple of steel factories in Brescia, so maybe I’ll go into his business. Maybe, when I hang up my boots, I will leave football altogether.’

Italian champions Juventus have expressed an interest in signing Arsenal striker Robin van Persie this summer.

The Turin giants are looking to reinforce their attacking line with veteran forward Alessandro Del Piero set to leave the club next month and on-loan striker Marco Borriello expected to return to Roma in July.

'Van Persie is a great player,' Juventus general director Giuseppe Marotta told Italian website Calciomercato.

'He is a complete player and would be useful to any team. But he still has one year left in his contract with Arsenal.

'We will try to put the icing on the cake this summer but the important thing is that the mix is good.'

Van Persie leads the Barclays Premier League goalscoring chart with 30 so far this season.

Juve have been closely monitoring Liverpool striker Luis Suarez as well as Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Higuain.

'Van Persie, Suarez or Higuain They are three important players,' Marotta said.

'In fantasy football we could have the three of them playing in the same line-up but in reality, it is different.

'If one of them arrives (here) is not because he will be the less talented as other things have to be taken into account, such as the financial aspect.

'Moreover, if (Real Madrid coach Jose) Mourinho does not want to sell Higuain it will be impossible for us to get him and we also have to take that into consideration.'

City striker Dzeko denies sounding out old pal at Juventus over pay on offer in Turin

Edin Dzeko has been forced to deny reports that he contacted Juventus defender Andrea Barzagli to ask about the Italian club”s pay structure.

The Bosnia striker has been in fine form for Manchester City this season but Italian daily Corriere dello Sport had claimed he wanted to know about the club”s pay and bonus schemes, suggesting he was seeking a move to the Turin giants.

Juventus sporting director Giuseppe Marotta was also reported by Italian media to have been in contact with Dzeko”s representatives to sound out a move to the Turin giants.

Dzeko knows Barzagli from their time together at Wolfsburg, who sold the forward to City for 27million in January.

Despite hitting 12 goals already this season, Dzeko still finds himself behind Sergio Aguero and Mario Balotelli in the strikers” pecking order at the Etihad Stadium.

It was suggested that he was growing frustrated at this, but Dzeko”s advisor, Irfan Redzepagic, denied that his man was seeking a move to Italy.

He said: “I know that this story has circulated in the news but I must say it is an impossible thing. “Edin is in England and Manchester City is the only thing of interest.”
