Mario Balotelli hopes of a return to
Serie A are resting with AC Milan after Juventus distanced themselves
from a move for the Manchester City striker.

Despite mounting speculation that
Juve had joined Milan in the race to sign him, Sportsmail understands
they have no interest in him and are happy to leave the way clear for
their Serie A rivals.

Manager Antonio Conte is content with his current striking options, particularly after wrapping up a deal for Athletic Bilbao marksman Fernando Llorente.

Additionally, they have taken former Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka on a five-month loan.

Baloteli is now anxiously waiting to see if Milan can come up with an acceptable offer. They are ready to pay up to 20million, City are holding out for 24m.

Barnsley 1 Birmingham 2: Davies at the double as Blues avenge 5-0 loss in September

There was a familiar ring to the name of the man who stole the show in this revenge re-match.

Only this time Birmingham’s Curtis Davies delivered the match-winning heroics to ease the pain of near-namesake Craig’s four-goal salvo in Barnsley’s astonishing 5-0 win at St Andrew’s in September.

But Barnsley striker Craig wasn’t entirely out of the spotlight, much as he would wish to have been on this occasion. For it was the Wales forward’s woeful penalty miss that turned the game and piled more pressure on his manager Keith Hill.

Davies, just on as a substitute in a return from injury, had the chance to put Barnsley in front when Steven Caldwell handled Jim O’Brien’s second-half corner with the score at 1-1.

But the hosts’ top marksman contrived to miss by an extraordinary distance – perhaps 30 yards high and 20 yards wide.

His embarrassment was compounded four
minutes later when Birmingham centre back Davies was allowed a free
header from Robert Hall’s free-kick.

That restored the lead he had given
his side from another set-piece, a near-post header from a corner also
delivered by Hall in the first half.

Jonathan Greening cracked a fine 20-yard equaliser, his first goal for Barnsley since arriving on loan from Nottingham Forest.

Birmingham manager Lee Clark felt his
continued reliance on youngsters – there were seven teenagers in the
side last weekend and five here – could be a ‘watershed’ for the club.

Warning that experienced players
might be frozen out, he said: ‘Those out will have to bide their time.
Age doesn’t matter to me. The young lads are showing great spirit and I
can guarantee passion when we go to Bolton on Saturday.’

Oakwell’s match sponsors delivered
another slap in the face to Hill – whose customary notes were peculiarly
absent from the programme – by naming David Perkins as Barnsley’s man
of the match.

Perkins had been substituted to a storm of boos directed at the bench in the 67th minute.

Hill said: ‘I can understand the
supporters and David was man of the match, no question. But he’s had
recurring injuries and I feel I made the right decision for David and
the club.’

The beleaguered manager, who was also
betrayed by a remarkable miss by Chris Dagnall, accused his players of
switching their marking duties against his wishes for Birmingham’s
second.

Hill appears to be daring his board
to sack him and this was his parting shot last night: ‘If we don’t stick
together we’ll go down.’

Dortmund chief plays down Lewandowski to Manchester rumours

Robert Lewandowski won't be joining either Manchester City or Manchester United at the end of the season, according to his club Borussia Dortmund.

The German champions have dismissed reports that the striker will move to City in exchange for Edin Dzeko next summer and rumours that he might leave for United in a 12m deal.

The 24-year-old marksman has nine goals in 15 Bundesliga matches this season, though Borussia are a long way behind runaway leaders Bayern Munich in the standings.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson personally scouted the Pole when Borussia played Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in November, while Inter Milan and Arsenal have also been linked with him.

Dortmund have tried to get him to sign a new deal but it is believed the player would prefer to follow in the footsteps of Shinji Kagawa to Old Trafford.

Moyes hails Everton side after Toffees make mockery of Gerrard's Stoke jibe

David Moyes believes Everton are producing the highest-quality football of his decade-long reign at Goodison.

The Toffees climbed to fourth in the Barclays Premier League following Saturday's 2-2 draw with Fulham, yet left Craven Cottage deflated by the point.

Dominating throughout and creating chance after chance – 26 in total with 15 on target – they somehow failed to dispatch Martin Jol's side with Steve Sidwell rescuing a point in the 90th minute.

Making a mockery of the claim by Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard that they 'play like Stoke', they thrilled visiting fans with some electrifying football.

'This is the best we've played in my time here,' the Toffees manager said.

'I couldn't say yet if it's the best team because the side that finished fourth (2004-05) and got into the Champions League were very consistent, resistant and ground out results.

'This team has an awful lot of attacking options. We can score and create chances.

'I hope we're still pushing for top four at the end of the season, I don't know if we will be because of the quality you need to be there.'

Nikica Jelavic was the most wasteful of Everton's players but Moyes is unconcerned by the Croatian's dip in form.

The 27-year-old marksman has fired four goals in 10 matches so far this season, while last term he struck 11 in 16 following his January arrival from Rangers.

'If we keep giving him the opportunity to score goals, he'll come back because he's a really good goalscorer,' Moyes said.

'In the second half of last season he was the one getting one or two goals and getting us out of sight

'At the moment we're missing his fire, but players go through different periods of form during the season.

'I've told him to keep going and that his goals will come.

'He's a really important player for us who made such a big difference last season.

'The team have improved so we're giving him chances to score. He will score, I have no doubt of that.'

Apart from Bryan Ruiz's seventh-minute free-kick and Sidwell's equaliser, delivered courtesy of a defensive lapse, Fulham were over-run throughout in a manner rarely seen at Craven Cottage.

Two well-worked goals from the magnificent Marouane Fellaini nudged Everton ahead and they should have been out of sight before Sidwell struck.

'Fellaini has taken the goalscoring on when we needed it. He's a really good player and was a handful at all times against Fulham,' Moyes said.

'You need to get the points on the board and we missed the opportunity to do that.

'I've said 10 games is a good time to assess your start, and we've had a good start compared to our usual starts.

'We've had a couple of games where we've felt hard done by, but against Fulham we have ourselves to blame.'

Moyes removed substitute Victor Anichebe from his squad shortly before kick-off for reasons he refused to disclose.

Fulham boss Martin Jol had identified Everton as the benchmark for a club like the Cottagers and after yesterday that opinion had hardened.

'Everton are very difficult to play against. They play a long first ball, but after that they play possession, overlap and play one-twos,' he said.

'They play with a purpose and that's their style. I don't want to talk about other teams but even Stoke have a style, and it's different from Everton, believe me.

'There are so many top teams in England so it will be very difficult for Everton to finish in the top four.

'It's good to hear a top manager like David Moyes saying he wants to do that.'

For decades the first two words of English learned by millions of kids in foreign lands were ‘Bobby Charlton’.

Across the planet, countless football lovers will join us in wishing the first gentleman of the greatest game the most splendid of landmark birthdays.

Sir Bobby is turning 75.

Never sent off. Rarely, if ever, heard to utter an expletive. Still England’s all-time top scorer with 49 peerless goals — and, for that matter, still Manchester United’s record marksman with 249. Not bad for a midfield player, albeit his country’s greatest.

Happy birthday, Bobby, and many of them.

Record scorer David Healy is ready to take some of the heat off Michael O’Neill by making an eagerly-awaited Northern Ireland comeback in next month’s World Cup qualifier in Portugal.

Sidelined while he attempted to resolve his future, after leaving Rangers at the end of last season, Healy was due to return to the Northern Ireland attack against Luxembourg on Tuesday, until suffering a thigh strain for his new club, Bury.

In his absence, Northern Ireland squandered a series of clear-cut chances and ended up being booed off after a late Luxembourg equaliser extended O’Neill’s winless run to five games.

Though under no immediate pressure, so early in his tenure, former Shamrock Rovers boss O’Neill is wary of losing public support and desperately needs 35-goal marksman Healy to pep up his shot-shy attack.

The former Tottenham striker has been linked with a move to Turkey, but Istanbul club Galatassaray withdrew from the race for the 31-year-old.

QPR werer believed to be in the hunt for the former Tottenham marksman, who signed for United four years ago for a staggering 31million.

Hughes has since played down the link.

When asked about the potential bid, Hughes said: 'That is a new one on me, in fairness.

The 21-year-old from Harlow, Essex, was cheered on by the Duke of Kent among another sell-out crowd at the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich.

Huckle looked to have given himself a

Edin Dzeko says he will stay and battle for his place at Manchester City, even if the champions do sign Robin van Persie.

Van Persie has stated he will leave Arsenal for pastures new this summer, an announcement which piqued the interest of Juventus, Manchester United and City.

The Bosnia international, who joined City just 18 months ago from Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg, has been repeatedly linked with a move to Bayern Munich and AC Milan.

An agent claiming to speak on behalf of the 26-year-old stated earlier in the summer that Dzeko was 70 per cent certain to be San Siro-bound.

The striker racked up 19 goals for Manchester City last year, but lost his goal-scoring form mid-way through the season.

The flawless performances of Aguero, combined with Roberto Mancini's fondness of Balotelli and the return of the prodigal Tevez, have left Dzeko on the sidelines for much of the second half of the season.

But Dzeko, who scored in City's title-clenching 3-2 victory over QPR, says he is staying put.

He said: 'I have not spoken with AC Milan. I will focus entirely on this club.'

It is believed that City are willing to listen to offers for the 6ft 4in marksman, as well as Roque Santa Cruz and Emmanuel Adebayor – who is who is likely to join Tottenham.

Andre Villas-Boas will go head to head with his former club Chelsea in the race to sign 20million-rated Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski.

The Tottenham manager has a 50m transfer war chest after taking over from Harry Redknapp and has already recommended the Poland marksman to the White Hart Lane hierarchy.

Spurs have made an initial approach but face stiff competition from Chelsea and Arsenal, who were left reeling by Robin van Persie's decision to quit the club last week.

Lewandowski was the Bundesliga's top scorer last season as Dortmund won the league and cup double.

After scoring 30 goals in Germay, he scored the first goal of Euro 2012 as Poland were held to a 1-1 draw by Greece.

Manchester United are also interested in the 23-year-old but Sir Alex Ferguson is focusing on strengthening his midfield ahead of the new Premier League season.

Indeed, United are battling with Spurs for Porto star Joao Moutinho who worked with Villas-Boas in his native Portugal.

A bid of 17m is expected to be enough to convince his club to sell as Tottenham seek a replacement for wantaway midfielder Luka Modric.

Rafael van der Vaart is also expected to be allowed to leave the club after Gylfi Sigurdsson joined from Hoffenheim having rejected a move to Liverpool.
