Billy Sharp capped a fine fortnight by striking twice as Nottingham Forest turned on the style either side of half-time to send in-form Leeds spiralling to defeat at the City Ground.

The striker's wife had given birth to their son on December 14 after a period of heartache that began with the death of their first child, who was just two days old, last summer.

Forest, who had slipped to 11th place after taking only four points from their previous five matches, were the latest side to make a mockery of the form book in the npower Championship after Sharp converted a late first-half penalty to cancel out Paul Green's early opener for Leeds.

Sharp fired his second of the game soon after the restart and a three-goal blitz in nine minutes – Rodolph Austin scored a clumsy own goal and Dexter Blackstock headed home the fourth – stunned the visitors, who had celebrated the completion of last week's takeover by Dubai investment bank GFH Capital with victory over Middlesbrough on Saturday – Leeds' fifth win in their last six league games.

Leeds striker Luciano Becchio's header
from Drury's cross was comfortably gathered by Camp, while at the other
end visiting goalkeeper Paddy Kenny pulled off a fine save in the 28th
minute to keep out Forest defender Elliott Ward's goalbound header.

Forest deservedly equalised in the
44th minute. Referee Lee Probert did not hesitate in pointing to the
spot following Lees' challenge on Sharp and the Forest striker picked
himself up to send Kenny the wrong way with the subsequent penalty for
his eighth goal of the season.

Forest, suitably perked, looked the
more dangerous side after the break and stole into a two-goal lead
within 12 minutes of the restart.

Blackstock headed a long clearance
brilliantly into the path of Sharp, who coolly rounded goalkeeper Kenny
and rammed home his second goal in the 54th minute and three minutes
later an out-of-touch Austin swung a clumsy leg at Forest defender
Ward's cut back and lashed the ball into the roof of his own net.

Worse was to come for Leeds. Forest

Cardiff lost top spot in the npower Championship with defeat at Nottingham Forest.

Forest had ended a five-game winless league run with victory over Peterborough prior to the international break.

Andy Reid scored the only goal of the game at London Road and it was the Irishman who opened the scoring here.

On-loan defender Daniel Ayala quickly added a second goal to give the hosts a 2-0 half-time lead.

Forest made sure of all three points
shortly after the restart when Billy Sharp scored his first goal for the
club since arriving at the City Ground on loan from Southampton seven
weeks ago.

Heidar Helguson pulled a goal back
for Cardiff midway through the second half, but despite Forest finishing
the game with 10 men following Adlene Guedioura's red card for two
bookable offences, they were unable to make any more inroads.

It meant back-to-back league victories for Forest for the first time this season, halting Cardiff's three-match winning run.

And the Welsh side also lost leadership of the table after Leicester came from behind to draw at midlands rivals Birmingham.

An uneventful game came to life after 25 minutes when Reid was fouled by Kevin McNaughton on the edge of the Cardiff box.

The Dubliner, who scored with a
terrific curling effort at Peterborough a fortnight ago, repeated the
feat with the resulting free-kick, bending a left-foot shot into the top
corner and giving goalkeeper David Marshall no chance.

Two minutes later and it was 2-0 to Forest.

Ayala remained up in attack following
a long throw from Greg Halford, and when Reid returned the ball into
the box, the Norwich centre-half powered a header past Marshall from 10
yards out.

Helguson curled an effort over the crossbar as Cardiff sought an immediate response.

A nice move by Cardiff just before
half-time then ended with the recalled Craig Conway falling over his own
feet and Forest midfielder Chris Cohen clearing the danger.

Forest went further ahead two minutes into the second half.

Sharp held up the ball, spun his
marker and ran at the Cardiff defence. He played a one-two with
substitute Radoslaw Majewski, on at the break in place of Simon Cox,
before shooting beneath Marshall for his first goal for the club.

Don Cowie saw a shot go narrowly wide as the visitors tried to respond.
Mark Hudson and Helguson missed chances to reduce Cardiff's arrears before the latter did so after 74 minutes.

Helguson controlled a high ball into the box, held off his marker and fired his shot beyond home keeper Lee Camp from 12 yards.

Cardiff were almost right back in it
soon afterwards when the fit-again Tommy Smith struck a post with an
effort from inside the area.

Had that gone in, it would have set up a frantic finale, particularly given Guedioura's red card in the 84th minute.

But Cardiff, despite some late pressure, were unable to make the game any closer and Forest claimed an impressive win.

Nottingham Forest fought back from 2-0 down to preserve their unbeaten start to the npower Championship campaign.

All the goals came in an entertaining second half at the City Ground.

After having the better of the first half, Forest found themselves behind courtesy of goals from Hayden Mullins and Marlon King in the space of three minutes.

Substitute Simon Cox quickly pulled one back for the hosts with a superb effort after 73 minutes before another sub, Dan Harding, levelled things up with four minutes remaining.

With Cox only fit enough for the bench following a foot injury sustained while on international duty with the Republic of Ireland, fellow summer signing Billy Sharp made his full debut for Forest alongside Dexter Blackstock in attack.

Leroy Lita was handed his Birmingham debut. The striker arrived on loan from Swansea last week and replaced Wade Elliott in the Blues' starting line up.

The hosts started brightly with Blackstock heading over from a corner following some early pressure.

A mistake by Jack Butland almost presented Sharp with his first Forest goal after 13 minutes. Butland spilled Sam Hutchinson's cross but Sharp's shot on the turn was straight at the England goalkeeper.

Butland was more assured soon afterwards when he did well to deal with a superb delivery into the box from Lewis McGugan.

A swift break by Forest should have seen them take the lead midway through the first half but Sharp, McGugan and then Adlene Guedioura could not capitalise after an almighty scramble in the Birmingham box.

After being on the backfoot for much of the opening 30 minutes, Birmingham nearly went ahead against the run of play.

Lita set up striker partner King but Lee Camp was quickly off his line to make a block. It was a brilliant piece of goalkeeping by the Northern Ireland international.

Daniel Ayala then denied King again from the resulting corner.

The final chance of the first half saw Andy Reid's free-kick from the edge of the area scooped over the crossbar by Butland five minutes before the break.

Birmingham boss Lee Clark made a change four minutes into the second half with the largely anonymous Peter Lovenkrands making way for Elliott.

Elliott got straight into the action, almost catching out Camp with a long-range shot but the Forest keeper held on to the ball at the second attempt.

Forest continued to get themselves into good positions but first Reid and then Greg Halford saw dangerous balls into the box narrowly elude team mates.

Cox came on after an hour, replacing Blackstock. But it was Birmingham's substitute Elliott that had turned the game in the visitor's favour since his introduction.

And Elliott was involved when the Blues took the lead after 69 minutes. He set up King whose shot was blocked by Hutchinson before Mullins fired a first-time volley into the roof of the net from 15 yards out.

Clark brought on Nathan Redmond for Chris Burke immediately after the goal, and it proved to be another masterstroke by the former Huddersfield manager.

Redmond evaded Halford and Reid down the right and cut the ball back from the byline for King who finished brilliantly from the edge of the area.

However, Forest's sub Cox had his say shortly afterwards. The Republic of Ireland international brought down Hutchinson's long ball forward with a sublime touch but his second touch was even better, brilliantly lobbing Butland to half the host's deficit.

Forest boss Sean O'Driscoll changed his formation to play three at the back as his side chased an equaliser, and it arrived with four minutes remaining.

Halford carried the ball deep into the Birmingham half before putting a deep cross into the box where Harding finished, with the aid of a deflection off Pablo Ibanez, at the far post.

Despite having the momentum the hosts did not push for a winner and had to endure some late Birmingham pressure to hold on for a point.

Nottingham Forest edged further away from the npower Championship relegation zone thanks to Dexter Blackstock's first-half goal at London Road.

Blackstock struck in the 38th minute as a third win in an unbeaten run of four away matches moved the Midlands club seven points clear of the bottom three despite the 70th-minute dismissal of winger Garath McCleary.

Both teams made just a single change despite a second game in the space of 48 hours.

Teenage midfielder Joe Newell was handed a rare start for Peterborough as forward Lee Tomlin dropped down to the bench.

Guy Moussi was missing from the Forest squad. He was replaced in midfield by Lewis McGugan.

Forest flew out of the blocks. McCleary and Andy Reid had goalbound efforts blocked inside the opening minute and McGugan sent a shot wide before Posh goalkeeper Paul Jones had to tip a Blackstock header over the crossbar in the fifth minute.

McGugan struck a post with a strike from 18 yards two minutes later before Jones was called into action again, this time to make a parrying save to deny Radoslaw Majewski.

Steve Cotterill's side continued to pile forward with Adlene Guedioura and McGugan once again threatening with long-range efforts.

Peterborough were forced into a 16th-minute change when Emile Sinclair suffered an injury so David Ball was introduced.

Following wave after wave of Forest attacks, Newell offered something in reply after 20 minutes with a shot from the edge of the area that cleared the bar. George Boyd followed suit shortly afterwards.

Jones was fortunate to get away with a fumble from a Blackstock header midway through the first half before Blackstock and Majewski saw further efforts narrowly miss the target.

Forest finally made the breakthrough seven minutes before half-time.
McCleary's cross from the right was skilfully brought under control by Blackstock in front of goal and the striker lashed the ball into the net via the underside of the crossbar.

Gaby Zakuani headed over as Peterborough looked for an immediate equaliser but Blackstock would have had a second goal had it not been blocked by Jones.

Posh threatened first after the break with Lee Camp parrying a shot from Paul Taylor.
But the second half soon began to take on the same pattern as the first as Jones pushed an effort from Majewski past a post and Blackstock saw shots blocked by Shaun Brisley and then Zakuani.

However, the sending-off of McCleary would see Forest lose their momentum.
The winger was shown a straight red card following a 70th-minute challenge on home captain Grant McCann.

Peterborough immediately set about trying to make their numerical advantage count and Camp had to block another shot from Taylor.

The Posh striker then saw another goalbound attempt blocked by Forest skipper Luke Chambers.

McCann curled a free-kick wide after 77 minutes and Boyd spurned their last chance to get something from the game when he mis-hit his shot from inside the area with two minutes remaining.

Chris Wood marked his return to the Bristol City team with the goal that lifted the Robins out of the npower Championship relegation zone and dragged Nottingham Forest back into trouble.

Wood, on loan from West Brom, kept his cool to score from the penalty spot early in the second half after Forest goalkeeper Lee Camp had a rush of blood and upended birthday boy Jon Stead eight yards out.

It was not the first time this season that Wood had been the scourge of Forest.

The 20-year-old striker netted twice at the City Ground in October during a loan spell at Birmingham to help the Blues to a 3-1 victory.

His goal this time round edged the Robins up to 40 points, within three of their opponents.

Forest were unchanged after an impressive 3-0 victory at Crystal Palace last weekend.
Wood's inclusion was one of three changes made by City boss Derek McInnes.

Full-back Jamie McAllister and midfielder Martyn Woolford were also recalled.

The first half was bereft of real goalscoring chances until the 38th minute when visiting goalkeeper Dean Gerken pushed Andy Reid's shot from the left side of the area past his near post.

Steve Cotterill's side had dominated without really carving City open and it was against the run of play when the goal came.

Camp made a mess of a Richard Foster cross, pushing the ball back into the area from under his own crossbar. Then after Stead had controlled the loose ball, Camp rushed out and upended the striker.

He was booked for the foul before getting a strong left hand to Wood's spot-kick, however, the Northern Ireland international could only push the ball into the side of his net.

From there on in it was much of the same – intense Forest pressure. Cotterill's team were creating chances in the second half though, but found City keeper Gerken in inspired form.

Gerken athletically tipped Dexter Blackstock's header over the bar on the hour mark.
He pushed away a header from Marcus Tudgay in the 88th minute before Reid curled an effort agonisingly wide from the edge of the box immediately afterwards.

Gerken then dived to hold another header from Forest captain Luke Chambers in injury time, with several Forest players circling looking to pounce on a rebound.

City held on for their first league win over Forest since 1947 and their first victory at the City Ground since 1955.

Garath McCleary came up with a convincing argument for being kept on by cash-strapped Nottingham Forest after shaping one of the scorelines of the season at a stunned Elland Road.

The midfielder, 24, is out of contract in the summer and has yet to be offered new terms, due to Forest’s financial crisis.

Manager Steve Cotterill may just be tempted to pass a begging bowl round the City Ground, though, after McCleary scored four times to wreck Leeds’ faint play-off hopes.

‘Garath is a wonderful boy,’ beamed Cotterill.

‘He has scored more goals tonight than he had appearances last season, but he is a special talent. I’ve never been in charge of a team that’s scored seven, and to do it at a place like this makes it even better.’

It was the first time Leeds have ever conceded seven at home in the League, but there was little sign of the mayhem to come when Adlene Guedioura tripped Ross McCormack for a sixth-minute penalty that Robert Snodgrass converted.

Guedioura made amends with a 35-yard strike Leeds legend Peter Lorimer would have been proud of in the eighth minute.

Guedioura looked like hogging the headlines after leading a lightning-quick 45th-minute breakaway and setting up McCleary for a drive that went in off the underside of the bar.

It was McCleary who took top billing, though, once Dexter Blackstock had put Forest 3-1 ahead with a far-post header in the 52nd minute.

Luciano Becchio bundled home a Snodgrass cutback in the 53rd minute and Leeds were level two minutes later through Michael Brown’s 20-yard strike.

Their joy was short-lived, as McCleary spectacularly volleyed home a Blackstock flick-on in the 56th minute and completed his hat-trick on the hour.

McCleary cut in from the right and beat Lonergan in the 71st minute, and the play-offs could hardly have been further from Neil Warnock’s thoughts when Forest made it seven in the 81st minute, as Blackstock seized on defensive uncertainty.

The Leeds boss, who faces a

embarrassed by the result, but you learn more about your players at
moments like this, rather than when you’re winning. It tells you who is
prepared to stand up and be counted, who you want alongside you in the
trenches.

‘We fought back really well to get to 3-3, but their fourth goal was straight off a Sunday League pitch. That demoralises you.’
