David Beckham has talked his way out of a move to Monaco by asking for too much money.

The former LA Galaxy and England midfielder made ‘excessive’ demands when negotiating with AS Monaco chiefs, despite the significant funds available through Russian owner Dimitri Rybolovlev, reports L’Equipe.

Monaco’s chief executive Tor-Kristian Karlsen recently travelled to the United States to meet with the 37-year-old and his representatives, but the club has since ended talks.

Currently just one point off Ligue 2 leaders Nantes, Monaco are confident they can earn promotion to Ligue 1 and have hinted the summer window would be more suitable to shop in.

Beckham could be out of lucrative contract options after Carlo Ancelotti confirmed cash-heavy PSG would not be making an offer for the former England international in November.

Harry Redknapp plans QPR clear-out

Redknapp plans QPR clear-out after blasting 'overpaid' remnants of Hughes' regime

Harry Redknapp is facing a fight to offload his ‘overpaid’ players as he plans a Queens Park Rangers clear-out.

The Loftus Road manager wants to raise cash by moving out the players he believes are surplus to requirements.

Speaking on Saturday after the 1-0 defeat at Newcastle, Redknapp said: ‘There’s an awful lot of players at this club earning far too much money for what they are – far, far, far too much money for their ability and what they give to the club.’

A number of former manager Mark Hughes’s signings are expected to be slashed from Redknapp’s squad in the next two transfer windows.

These include defender Jose Bosingwa, who was last week fined 130,000 by the club for refusing to sit on the bench for the club’s 2-1 win over Fulham. He will lead the planned exodus.

Without naming Boswinga, Redknapp said: ‘He didn’t want to be on the bench and didn’t want to be a substitute, so he went home.

‘He has been fined two weeks’ wages, 130,000. Not too bad for two weeks – decent isn’t it’

Sportsmail understands Djibril Cisse, Samba Diakite and Stephane Mbia, who were all signed on lucrative contracts by Hughes, are facing the axe.

But club officials fear the players on big salaries will not be easy to shift because they will not be prepared to take the significant wage reduction needed to secure a move elsewhere. Continuing his attack on players not justifying their high wages, Redknapp said: ‘I don’t really want to see the owners have their pants taken down like they have in the past. A lot of agents made money out of them.

‘I fined a player last week and he was earning more than any player earned at Tottenham (Redknapp’s previous club). You shouldn’t be paying massive wages when you’ve got a stadium that holds 18,000 people.

‘Newcastle holds 52,000 and most of their players will be nowhere near the wages some of the players are earning here.’

QPR will now fear relegation is beckoning after this defeat and skipper Ryan Nelsen revealed that Redknapp was not just angry at the amount of money some of his players earn.

‘The manager is not very happy. That’s our first defeat under him and obviously he hates losing,’ Nelsen said. ‘He’s not very happy at all, but everyone is a wee bit disappointed with that performance to tell you the truth.’

A late goal by Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi, on as a substitute, saw Redknapp’s side beaten 1-0 but Nelsen admitted the driving rain had made the game enjoyable to play in.

‘I love those conditions,’ the central defender said. ‘I’ve got to admit it was fun out there for most of the match. St James’ Park is one of my favourite places, especially with the rain lashing down and wind biting and the crowd is really passionate.

‘Maybe I’m just old and sentimental but that’s what English football is all about. Good old English football. It was like the Alamo at times. I swear I heard the horns and the cavalry coming.’

Raheem Sterling cash deal as Liverpool wonderboy should get his delayed 18th birthday present

Sterling cash deal as Liverpool wonderboy should get his delayed 18th birthday present

Brendan Rodgers has taken a hands-on role in Raheem Sterling's contract negotiations to ensure the deal reaches a successful conclusion.

Sterling is 18 today, and it was envisaged when contract talks began earlier this year that his birthday celebrations would coincide with Liverpool announcing a new long-term contract for the precocious winger.

That will not be the case. Talks between Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre and Sterling's advisers continue but Rodgers, weary of the speculation surrounding the discussions, is confident things will soon be wrapped up.

In order to reach that point, Rodgers has spoken on several occasions to Sterling. He has reminded him about the chance he has been afforded at Anfield, the role Liverpool have played in his development and the rewards that will be there for him if he makes the right moves.

'There are good conversations and there is no worry or concern – it will be resolved,' said Rodgers. 'I'm comfortable with it. The club is working on it very well; Ian Ayre's doing a good job. I've spoken to the agent; there's no problem.

'There has been a lot made of it but there are still 18 months left (on Sterling's current deal). He's a young kid and we just want to make sure that everything's right for him to be nurtured. I have spoken to Raheem. I've gone through what I'd call the core elements of his development.'

From when Rodgers first spoke publicly about Sterling signing a new contract on September 15, he has maintained this would not be the most lucrative deal of his career and re-emphasised the England international's potential will not be spoiled by finance.

That theme has been constant in the discussions Rodgers and Sterling have had and Liverpool's manager has gone to great lengths to advise him to look at the bigger picture, rather than think about the money that other clubs such as Chelsea and Manchester City would be prepared to offer.

'There is a plan in place for him,' said Rodgers. 'There's a commitment there and he's a real good kid. It's quite low profile. We just want to make sure it's right for him and he feels it. I believe he does. It'll get done sooner or later.

'He will have all the tools here, at one of the top football clubs in the world, to progress. I don't want the club or the kid being affected by over-the-odds demands. All the figures that get bandied about for kids these days can destroy them.'

There is no doubt that Sterling's development has been one of the main talking points of Liverpool's campaign but, after making 22 appearances and scoring one goal, there will come a point when Rodgers needs to preserve him by taking him out of the team.

'I'm in the business of trying to help nurture these kids,' Rodgers said. 'Money distorts the reality, I've always said that. So I've always tried to ensure that I give my point of view on it. It's about being sensible rather than going over the top.

'We as a staff are on our toes to make him better, then hopefully from that, we'll get excellence,' he added. 'It's then his responsibility to deliver.'

Chelsea and Manchester United have been interested in Busquets in the past,
but were both knocked back.

Now Manchester City are hoping a huge fee and lucrative contract may make the deal
happen.

Barcelona have insisted the 24-year-old is not for sale.

But City want to further strengthen their midfield, despite buying Javi
Garcia, Scott Sinclair and Jack Rodwell in the summer, and ex-Barca man Yaya
Toure has been a huge success since his move to Eastlands.

It is understood the deal will run the length of Chamberlain's current Gunners deal that expires in 2016.

Chamberlain's profile has sky-rocketed in recent months after a tremendous start to his Gunners career which culminated in a shock call-up to England's Euro 2012 squad.

And O2 chiefs have pinpointed Chamberlain as the sportsman they want to lead their British-based promotions.

Chamberlain already has similar deals with Nike, EA Sports and Disney.

O2 recently ended a long-term partnership with Arsenal, meaning the firm can put together a more personalised campaign for Chamberlain.

The 19-year-old is also negotiating an improved contract with the Gunners, which the club hope he will conclude soon.

Alastair Cook believes England can put their sorry performance against India behind them in Thursday's World Twenty20 Super Eight match against West Indies.

Captain Stuart Broad does not believe his team have any mental scars from their hapless performance against spin in Sunday's record 90-run defeat against India in Colombo.

And Test captain Cook agreed as he said: 'The important thing is we're through the group, so there's a clean slate.

'They had a bad game but that can happen to anybody and I'm sure the lads will be working hard to put that right.

'You've got to have the balance of responsibility and skill to play a big shot – that's the skill in Twenty20, staying calm when a lot of things are happening very quickly.

'I've got no worries. There's a huge amount of talent in that side and Stuart and the lads will prove what good players they are.'

Cook was unable to provide any developments in the Kevin Pietersen situation.

Pietersen, unavailable for the defence of the ICC World Twenty20 because of his differences with the England and Wales Cricket Board, is instead fulfilling a lucrative contract as television pundit for the tournament from a Colombo studio.

Cook added on Sky Sports News: 'We know the qualities he brings as a batsman but clearly issues have to be resolved before he comes back in to the side. Hopefully they can (be).'

Kevin Pietersen is hoping his differences with the England and Wales Cricket Board are 'sorted', and he will return in time to tour New Zealand early next year.

England's prodigal batsman has been at odds with his employers for much of the summer and was eventually dropped from the Test team at Lord's when his working relationship with coach Andy Flower and then captain

Andrew Strauss broke down over 'provocative' texts sent to opposing South African players at Headingley.

Pietersen is also playing no part in England's defence of the ICC World Twenty20, which gets under way in earnest when they face Afghanistan in their first Group A match.

Instead, he is fulfilling a lucrative contract as a television pundit for the tournament and staying on the outskirts of Colombo – from where he this morning tweeted his optimism that he may soon be returning to the fold.

In an exchange with New Zealand rugby union star Dan Carter, he wrote: 'Hoping all's sorted and I'm on the NZ tour in Feb.'

Strauss, meanwhile, has cleared the
air with Pietersen after relations between them were strained over the
reported content of the texts the latter sent to South African players.

'We did catch up. It was important we did,' Strauss told Sky Sports News. 'He and I have had interesting times over the last month or two, and it was great to sit down with him.

'He apologised for a few things he
had done. We've been through a lot together and had shared experiences.
We're fine going forward.'

Pietersen's remark comes a day after new Test captain Alastair Cook confirmed he has held meetings with the South Africa-born batsman, but issues remain to be resolved before he can resume his international career with his adopted country.

Cook replaced Strauss when the latter retired last month, and will travel to India for a tough four-Test tour there without Pietersen in his squad.

England's selectors felt unable to reintegrate the superstar batsman yet, and he was also left off the list of those with annual central contracts – meaning Pietersen will be a free agent once his current deal runs out at the end of this month.

Cook said: 'I did have a meeting with Kev and I've been involved with (other) meetings as well.

'Clearly
the issues haven't been resolved, and that's why he hasn't been made
available for selection at the moment. Time, I hope, will be a healer
and we will be able to move on.'

The
England and Wales Cricket Board had no comment to make in response to
Pietersen's tweet, and Cook refused to be drawn on what the issues are.

'That is private, and I can't talk about it,' he said. 'For the best outcome possible we can't be talking about it. When the issue gets resolved – if the issue gets resolved – I hope he can come back and play for England.

'At the moment that can't happen. We're trying to do it behind closed doors to get the best possible outcome. It's a sad circumstance at the moment. He is a world-class player and he's not playing for England at this precise moment in time. He will be missed, but it gives another person an opportunity.

'Meetings are still going on in Sri Lanka at the moment. (ECB chief executive) David Collier and (managing director) Hugh Morris are out there as well.

'If the issues can be resolved, Kevin has said he is available for selection – but at the moment that can't happen.'

Cristiano Ronaldo could be ready to stun Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho by quitting the club.

Reports in Spain suggest the Portuguese striker has told club president Florentino Perez that he wants to leave the Spanish champions.

It is widely reported that Ronaldo had a meeting on Saturday with Perez, director general Jose Angel Sanchez and his agent Jorge Mendes.

One Spanish radio station claimed that Ronaldo, who scored 46 league goals last season, cited a falling out between certain squad members and did not feel 'valued' by the club.

Other sources claim that the superstar – despite having three years remaining on his lucrative contract – is astounded he has not been offered a new deal.

Ronaldo starred in Sunday night's 3-0 demolition of Granada, scoring two goals in the process.

But the 27-year-old was substituted by Mourinho after a strong tackle from Granada's Borja Gomez in the second half.

A worrying sign for Madrid was Ronaldo's reluctance to celebrate either of his goals with any enthusiasm.

After the game the former Manchester United striker said: 'I’m sad – when I don’t celebrate goals it’s because I’m not happy.

'It’s a professional thing. Real Madrid know why I’m not happy.’

The Portugal captain refused to elaborate on the reason for his unhappiness.

Ronaldo, who began his career at Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon, left Manchester United for 82million in 2009 for the Bernabeu.

Former United team-mate Gary Neville reacted to the news and joked that perhaps Ronaldo was missing an English delicacy.

He tweeted: 'Cristiano sad at RM its saying. I'm not sure he's ever been happy there. ( my words not inside knowledge). I told him he'd miss Jam Roly!!'
