Hard worker: Wellington Paulista scored for the Development Squad

Wellington Paulista scored his first goal in a West Ham shirt as the club's Development Squad beat Arsenal 2-0 at London Colney.

The 29-year-old Brazilian, who scored 28 in 40 appearances last year at Cruzeiro, signed on a six-month loan deal and worked hard up front.

His header opened the scoring before Matthias Fanimo grabbed the second as Nick Haycock's youngsters helped the site start their U21 Premier League Elite Group Stage campaign with a bang.

Haycock was pleased with Paulista's efforts and praised him after the game for his work rate and determination.

'He's a good lad first and foremost. I've picked that up in training,' said Haycock.

'He wants to do extra, he wants to work, he wants to get fit, he's hungry. I thought he showed that in his performance today.

'You sometimes get players who are used to playing at a higher level in their own minds, and they come down to this level and don't put the performance in, but I couldn't question Wellington.'

Paulista is confident he will be able to make a strong impact at Upton Park and will not succumb to any pressures.

He said: 'The pressure will not be a problem for me because I am used to it from my time in Brazil, where the fans were really addicted to the club.

'The manager also put pressure on the players too, so it will be the same playing here.

'What I am interested in is the passion of the supporters for their team, the way they keep going with the club and the way they make the players perform better.'

He continued: 'I am strong, I am a fighter and I can score with both feet. I run a lot on the pitch and I can play as either a first or second striker.

'I think I can do my best here and I am coming to England to prove to everyone that I am one of the best strikers in Brazil and to get better and better.'

Swansea have signed Osasuna forward Roland Lamah on an 18-month loan deal.

The 25-year-old arrived in Wales on Monday to wrap up his move from the La Liga side, with a permanent transfer earmarked for this summer.

Lamah is highly-rated in Belgium, where he has been capped at every level from Under 19s upwards, and can line up on the left of an attacking three or as a striker.

A clause in the deal – the paperwork of which is expected to be completed on Tuesday – states that Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins will have first refusal on a permanent move for the 2million-rated player if he impresses at the Liberty Stadium.

Wigan will complete the loan signing of Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Joel in the coming days.

The stopper is currently third choice with the Spanish club and spent time away last season, at La Liga rivals Rayo Vallecano.

The Latics have already added Manchester United forward Angelo Henriquez to their ranks since the transfer window opened on Tuesday, and Joel's arrival will be considered a major coup.

Despite his position in Madrid, the stopper is highly thought of and is expected to step into the No 1 spot when the current incumbent Thibaut Courtois returns to Chelsea.

The Belgian has been in the Spanish capital since the start of the season, impressing to such a level that he is already his country's No 1 aged just 20.

Atletico want to keep hold Courtois but understand that may not be possible as his stock continues to rise.

West Ham are confident they can beat QPR to the permanent signing of Joe Cole from Liverpool, and want him back at Upton Park in time for the weekend FA Cup tie with Manchester United.

The midfielder has endured a torrid two and a half years since leaving Chelsea, and was farmed out on a season-long loan deal to Lille last season.

He returned with the hope of forcing himself into Brendan Rodgers' plans, but has once again fallen short of expectation.

Sources at Liverpool are hopeful a deal can be agreed for the severance from the 18 months left on Cole's 90,000-per-week deal. If West Ham want Cole to play this weekend, he must be registered by midday on Friday.

Last week, Harry Redknapp admitted his interest in luring the former England international to Loftus Road

'I’ve got a lot of time for Joe as a
player and as a person,' said Redknapp, of the player who have him his
competitive debut in 1998. 'I’d like to bring Joe here if I can but the
deal would have to be right for the club.

'We couldn’t do a deal as it [Cole’s
wages] is at Liverpool. I’ll have to speak to Brendan Rodgers. We’ll
have a chat when the time’s right.'

But now the Hammers, Cole's first
club, have jumped ahead of their London rivals in the race for a player
with 56 international caps to his name.

The No 26 shirt, worn by Cole during his time in east London is currently vacant in Sam Allardyce's squad.

Thibaut Courtois is likely to stay at Chelsea next season

Chelsea set to keep Courtois at Stamford Bridge next season… but Barca are sniffing around

Chelsea are intending to keep goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois at Stamford Bridge after his loan spell with Atletico Madrid ends, but they will have to wrestle him away from the lure of Barcelona.

The 20-year old remains in Madrid until the summer and, although his current deal with the Blues expires in 2016, he could earn a big pay rise if he agrees new terms.

He was snapped up for just six million euros (4.9m) from Genk in August 2011 and is now in his second loan spell with Atletico, succeeding David de Gea after his transfer to Manchester United.

The Belgian stopper kept 15 clean sheets over 38 appearances last year and helped Los Rojiblancos to finish fifth in La Liga.

After his impressive year, Courtois requested an extended loan period, which Chelsea agreed to, but his performances have sparked interest from Barcelona.

Chelsea regard him as a long-term successor to Petr Cech and him staying with the club next season could mean both deputies Ross Turnbull and Hilario are off-loaded.
