Lewis Holtby is heading to White Hart Lane in the next 24 hours after Tottenham finally agreed a deal to sign him now, rather than at the end of the season.

The Germany midfielder is flying over to London to complete the deal, after Tottenham gave way over Schalke’s 1.5million asking price and also agreed to play a money-spinning friendly with the Bundesliga club at a date to be announced later this year.

Sportsmail broke the story that Tottenham wanted to sign Lewis Holtby this month – read more

Sportsmail revealed earlier this month how an injury to Sandro had forced Tottenham to reconsider their plans over Holtby, who was due to join them as a free agent in the summer, and approach Schalke with a cut-price bid to sign him during the current transfer window.

Their initial offer was rejected, as Schalke set their valuation at 1.5m and underlined their determination to stick to it by selecting the attacking midfielder for their return to Bundesliga action, after a mid-winter break, against Hannover.

But with Sandro ruled out for the rest of the season after being injured against QPR, and manager Andre Villas-Boas underlining the need for reinforcements, Tottenham have relented over the fee and agreed to Schalke’s demands.

QPR boss Harry Redknapp has made a 5million bid for West Brom defender Jonas Olsson, according to reports.

Redknapp priority in this transfer window is to strengthen his defence to try and help his side in their battle against relegation and is keen on Olsson, whose outstanding form this season has also seen him watched by Arsenal.

The 29-year-old has a 4m buy-out clause in his contract in the summer and QPR believe they can get him this month.

Redknapp is also considering a move for Tottenham defender William Gallas.

Chelsea are weighing up a possible bid to sign Benoit Assou-Ekotto from Tottenham.

Rafa Benitez is under pressure to find a replacement for defender Ashley Cole who is set to leave after his contract ends in the summer, and the experienced Assou-Ekotto fits the bill.

Chelsea have reportedly considered launching a bid of 5million, according to Metro, for the player Spurs paid just 3.5million to sign him from Lens in 2006.

The 28-year old Cameroon international stood out as one of the best players at White Hart Lane last season, although a persistent knee injury has kept him out of Andre Villas-Boas’ plans thus far, although he will be returning soon.

Instead Jan Vertonghen has retained his place after capably standing in for the injured defender and Kyle Naughton, who is predominantly a right-back, has also played on the left.

Chelsea have been linked with Southampton’s Luke Shaw, but the 17-year old’s arrival at Stamford Bridge would mean the club were left with two young left-backs in Shaw and Ryan Bertrand.

Tottenham are increasingly hopeful they can lure Danish wonderkid Christian Eriksen to White Hart Lane in January.

The 20-year-old attacking midfielder, who turned down a chance to join Manchester City last year, is refusing to sign a new contract at Ajax.

That has alerted a number of top clubs but Spurs are optimistic that a guarantee of regular first-team football will give them the advantage.

They are already expected to sign defender Toby Alderweireld from Ajax in the summer, but believe that a deal for Eriksen could be done in the January transfer window.

Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas has admitted he is unlikely to stick Gareth Bale in defence again.

The Welshman lined up as a left back in Sunday's Premier League encounter against Queens Park Rangers.

But AVB moved Bale back to his usual left wing position at half time after going behind at White Hart Lane.

And the move reaped dividends as Bale helped Spurs claim a 2-1 victory.

Villas-Boas told The Sun: 'We decided to play with Gareth at left-back because we thought he would give us more width.

'But we were much more steady in the second half when we made changes.'

AVB is not the only one to have considered using Bale as a defender.

Former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp always maintained Bale could be a great left back, while Barcelona wanted him to form a devastating partnership with right back Dani Alves.

Comparisons with Barcelona pass master Xavi may be premature but the central midfielder, 17, looks the real deal and was the stand-out performer in Thursday night's NextGen Series clash at White Hart Lane.

Arsenal and Manchester City have their eyes on Samper – but on Thursday's showing Barca will have no intention of parting with their wonderkid. He showed a passing range, touch and awareness beyond his years as his side coasted to victory.

It could have been different if Tottenham – driven by impressive midfielder Nabil Bentaleb – had gone ahead in the opening minute when Barca keeper Joseph Ondoa smashed his clearance off Tottenham's Souleymane Coulibaly, but the ball floated just over the bar. As you would expect, the Barcelona players looked comfortable on the ball – and none more so than Samper and midfield partner Nando Quesada.

The Spaniards took a 19th- minute lead after 17-year-old Sandro expertly turned in Adama's low cross after a flowing move.

Spurs' Alex Pritchard came close on the stroke of halftime but his curling shot from just inside the box hit the bar.

And, in the 73rd minute, Sandro capitalised on some poor defending to slot home his second and guarantee Barca the victory.

Ready for the fight: Hugo Lloris is undisputed number one for France, but will have to unseat Brad Friedel at Tottenham

Tottenham's new 12m goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is optimistic he will make his debut at Reading on Sunday, despite his manager insisting he will have to fight for the No 1 shirt with Brad Friedel.

The deadline day signing has had a slow start to his White Hart Lane career – watching the 1-1 draw with Norwich City from the stands and then reporting for international duty with France.

And Andre Villas-Boas indicated that the wait could go on, saying that veteran Friedel, 41, is first choice for the moment.

Lloris, who played in both of France's opening World Cup qualifiers against Finland and Belarus, admitted it was 'never nice' to learn he would not be top keeper for his club as well.

But the 25-year-old, who joined from Lyon, said he will work hard in training to impress his new boss and get off the substitutes' bench.

He said: 'I will join Tottenham calmly, discovering a new world, another league. I have lots of things to prove there. I will have to work hard.

'All that is positive and I am going to get to know my new team-mates and staff, and I am going to work as well as I can.

'There are a lot of things for me to prove. I am going to strive for success.'

Responding to Villas-Boas' comments about his place, Lloris said: 'It is too early to reply to this type of question. Today, I have a status – I have the France captain's armband. It is a mark of trust and respect.'

Earlier this week, Friedel laid down the law to his new team-mate, saying he will not move aside.

The American said: 'I feel like I played pretty well in my last game and hopefully I continue to get picked. Right now I believe the shirt is mine to lose.

'I believe the manager came out and said that and if this is the case then it's a great challenge for me.'

France manager Didier Deschamps has indicated that goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is unhappy with comments made by new club boss Andre Villas-Boas, just four days after his move to White Hart Lane.

Lloris left Lyon for Tottenham in an 8million move on Friday, with the clear intention of taking the No 1 shirt from Brad Friedel.

With Friedel now 41, it appeared Lloris, 16 years his junior, had been brought in with the idea of replacing the veteran American.

But Friedel responded to his arrival by producing one of the performances of his career against Norwich on Saturday.

That prompted Villas-Boas to say that Lloris would have a fight on his hands to win a starting spot.

That does not appear to have gone down too well Lloris, who linked up with the national team on Monday.

Speaking at their base in Clairefontaine, Deschamps, in comments reported by L`Equipe, said: 'Hugo has not appreciated the statements of his coach.

'I am not going to create a problem that I do not need today.

'But if it were to happen then it would need some consideration. I do not want Hugo to find himself in this situation.'

Fulham manager Martin Jol has hailed Dimitar Berbatov as the biggest signing in the club’s history.

Berbatov snubbed offers from Juventus and Fiorentina to join his former Tottenham boss in a 5million deal and lifted spirits at the club after the 15m sale of Mousa Dembele to Tottenham.

The Bulgarian has not played for
Manchester United this season and has not started a game since February
but he could be involved at West Ham on Saturday.

Jol said: ‘With good players you have to pay good money but we have made steps over the last couple of years.

‘There were a lot of clubs interested in Dimitar. We were able and capable of getting him and I’m not lying, he’s here.

‘I tried to do something months ago
and it didn’t come off and I came back. For him it was the right moment
to make a decision and he made that decision for us.

‘I’m very, very happy and I think our
fans will be very happy and proud because it’s probably the biggest
signing in the history of Fulham.’

Jol was Tottenham manager when
Berbatov arrived at White Hart Lane for 11m from Bayer Leverkusen in
2006 but had been sacked by the time the striker was sold to
Manchester United for 30m two years later.

‘In my final period at Spurs, I said,
“He will go over my dead body”,’ recalled Jol. ‘We had a good
relationship and he knows that he will enjoy his football here.
Hopefully, he can score his goals and we have other good players around
him.’

Berbatov’s decision to sign for
Fulham did not go down well with Fiorentina or Juventus, who both
believed they had struck agreements with the striker.

Juventus director general Beppe
Marotta said: ‘Berbatov certainly did not make a good impression on
anyone and it was an unprofessional way to behave, so we agree with
Fiorentina that it’s best he didn’t come here.’

Fulham are also keen to sign Sunderland’s 27-year-old midfielder Kieran Richardson.

Tottenham and Lyon have agreed a 12.3million fee for France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to move to White Hart Lane.

The north London club would pay and initial 8.7m, with a potential 3.6m to come in add-ons for the 25-year-old, according to French newspaper L'Equipe.

However, Lloris is said to have asked for some time to think before confirming his move to the Barclays Premier League.

Despite being one of the best goalkeepers in the world, Lyon are keen to cash in and shift him off their bloated payroll.

But he is said to be a little disappointed by the terms offered by Tottenham.
