Just one six was hit on the second day of the first Test between New Zealand and England and Dunedin – but one poor lad wore it right on his temple.

Having skittled England out for a pitiful 167, Kiwi openers Hamish Rutherford and Peter Fulton had seen off the new ball and were just settling into their stride when Monty Panesar was brought into the attack by Alastair Cook.

But while the watching public were waiting to see if the spinner could extract any turn from a decent pitch, one unlucky punter took his eye off the ball as the left-handed Rutherford sent the ball sailing over the long-on rope.

The ball clattered into the unsuspecting spectator's head but don't worry, he's OK, and he'll have it all on tape to look back on – once the swelling has gone down, of course.

Max power! Chilton becomes fourth Brit on grid after landing Marussia deal

UPDATED:

12:05 GMT, 18 December 2012

Max Chilton insists he is 'already up to speed' with Formula One after Marussia confirmed the promising youngster as the fourth Briton on the grid for the 2013.

Chilton replaces Caterham bound Charles Pic for the 2013 season and despite having just two Formula One tests under his belt, the 21-year-old Reigate-born racer is convinced he is ready to make the step up from the GP2 grand prix feeder series.

'It's hard to put into words how I'm feeling today, with the announcement that I will be racing for the Marussia F1 Team in 2013,' said Chilton.

Chilton tasted victory at one race in three years, ending his final season 4th in the standings.

The Briton graduated to the F1 feeder series in 2010. After two largely lacklustre years, Chilton ended last season with two wins from the final four rounds finishing 4th in the championship.

'It comes at the end of what has been
a fantastic year for me, and those steps – my GP2 pole positions and
wins, my performances in the F1 Young Driver Test and in FP1 at Abu
Dhabi – have given everyone the confidence in my ability to compete at
the highest level of motor sport.

'I am very fortunate to have spent
the last six races with the Marussia F1 Team as Reserve Driver, which
means that instead of a standing start, I am already up to speed and at
ease with the people, the culture, the systems and of course, the 2012
package.

'During the period since the Japanese
Grand Prix, I have watched at very close quarters the incredible
commitment and determination to succeed that saw everyone in the team
pushing until the very last race. I feel very lucky to be able to embark
on my F1 racing career with this group of people.

Chilton becomes the fourth Brit on the grid next year, joining Lewis Hamilton (right), Jenson Button and Paul Di Resta.

With just three seats left to be confirmed next season, only Germany can boast the equal number of drivers. But with Adrian Sutil tipped for a return that could become five.

The other countries who will be represented in 2013 are France (3), Australia (2), Mexico (2), Finland (2), Spain, Brazil, and Venezuela.

'Pre-season testing is just a few
weeks away, so my focus now is to continue my physical preparation
whilst spending as much time as possible working with the technical team
to help develop the car I will drive in my debut F1 season.'

Chilton is the son of Grahame

Even so the funding boost will be
welcomed at Marussia who narrowly missed out 10m in prize money after
being pipped to tenth place in the constructors' championship by
Caterham at the season finale in Brazil.

Marussia team principal John Booth is
adamant that, funding aside, his young protege has the talent to help
the Banbury-based team build on the solid progress they made in 2012.

Booth said: 'We have spent a
significant amount of time evaluating his performances during 2012, both
in our own car in a testing situation and also from the pit wall as we
monitored his progress alongside the other members of our junior talent
pool during Grand Prix support races.

'We felt confident enough in his
ability and potential to appoint him to the role of Reserve Driver in
September and since that time his development has been rapid in all
aspects. First and foremost, he has shown himself to be extremely
capable in the car.

'Not only that, Max very quickly
embedded himself within the team, thanks in no small part to the fact
that he is a lively and affable character who we've enjoyed having
around. Having been integral to our race weekend engineering environment
for the past three months already – as well as having undertaken a
significant part of our simulator programme – Max has already found his
feet.'

Fulham 1 Sunderland 3: Black Cats punish 10-man hosts with second-half treble

|

UPDATED:

17:52 GMT, 18 November 2012

Sunderland picked up their first win since late September as they threw off the shackles to down 10-man Fulham at Craven Cottage.

The Black Cats have been the division's most lacklustre in front of goal this season, but scored three times in 20 second-half minutes to punish their hosts.

Fulham captain Brede Hangeland was sent off in the first-half for a reckless lunge on opposite number Lee Cattermole, making anything other than a draw a big ask for Martin Jol's team.

And so it proved. Steven Fletcher grabbed the first five minutes after the break, but substitue Mladen Petric levelled things up seven minutes later from close range.

However, it was Sunderland who reacted the best, taking the lead through Carlos Cuellar, and adding a spectacular third through Stephane Sessegnon's first goal of the season.

Grant Holt buoyed by Norwich City win over Arsenal

The only way is up, says Holt after Norwich pick up first win of the season

|

UPDATED:

13:12 GMT, 21 October 2012

Captain Grant Holt believes Norwich have given themselves the perfect platform to climb the Barclays Premier League table after battling to a 1-0 win over Arsenal at Carrow Road.

The Canaries recorded their first league win under new boss Chris Hughton after producing a hard-working display to capitalise on a lacklustre performance by the Gunners.

Holt reacted quickest after stand-in goalkeeper Vito Mannone had spilled Alex Tettey's 25-yard effort midway through the first half to slot his third goal in successive games.

Despite having plenty of possession Arsenal failed to stretch the hosts, who could have gone into the break with a two-goal cushion had defender Michael Turner not planted his close-range header wide from a corner.

After suffering heavy defeats to Liverpool and Chelsea, Holt feels Saturday's performance was the perfect tonic for the battles ahead, which continue at Aston Villa next weekend and former manager Paul Lambert.

'Everyone had been looking at the negatives from the games against Liverpool and Chelsea, but we had played well in those matches,' Holt said on Canaries Player.

'It is all about hard work and we have been putting the same endeavour in but not getting the rewards. We will take a lot from this result.

'No-one will have given us a chance of winning this and wrote us off too easily.

'We needed it and it has taken a while for us to wait for the performance and the win.

'We have to realise that is the only way we are going to get results in this division. If we keep doing it, then we will be all right.'

Norwich had not beaten Arsenal at home since Boxing Day, 1984.

However, Hughton knows all the hard work will count for nothing if his side fail to follow it up.

'It is about levels of consistency,' the former Newcastle and Birmingham boss said.

'We can talk well about what the team have done against Arsenal, but because of where we are we realise it is going to be a tough season so we know we have to show that level in more games than not.

'You have always got to try to get the balance right. On the back of a poor defeat last game you have then got to pick them up, and with this group it has not been so difficult.

Off the mark: Norwich recorded their first win of the season

Off the mark: Norwich recorded their first win of the season

'We accept we are not going to be in the top 10 and every game is going to be tough, but if we do it right then we have definitely got enough quality to do well enough.'

Wes Hoolahan impressed in his forward role just behind Holt, watched by Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni.

Hughton was capped 53 times by the Republic, playing at Euro 88 and being part of the 1990 World Cup squad, and knows just what ex-Shelbourne man Hoolahan, 30, can give a side.

'Wes is a super player,' he said. 'But I would think that it would not just take this performance for Trapattoni to be aware of that because of what Wes has done over the past few seasons.

'But if he needed any clarification of that, he will have got that.'

Tony Pulis fearing much-changed Liverpool will bounce back from Udinese loss against Stoke

Pulis fears much-changed Liverpool will bounce back from Udinese loss

|

UPDATED:

15:00 GMT, 6 October 2012

Stoke manager Tony Pulis expects a stern test by Liverpool despite the Reds' loss against Udinese in the Europa League on Thursday night.

The Potters travel to Anfield with former Reds Michael Owen, Peter Crouch and Charlie Adam in their squad, as they go in search of their second Barclays Premier League victory of the season.

Stoke opened their winning account last weekend against Swansea while Liverpool, who have made a stuttering start to their campaign and are currently in 14th place, got their first win against Norwich.

Pulis knows his team will face a much-changed side from the Liverpool outfit who lost 3-2 at home to Udinese, with Reds boss Brendan Rodgers likely to keep the faith with the side who crushed the Canaries 5-2 last Saturday.

Tough ask: Tony Pulis is anticipating a stong test

Tough ask: Tony Pulis is anticipating a strong test

Pulis said: 'I thought they were very unfortunate (against Udinese). They were in complete control of the game and then they scored just after half time and it was a totally different game.

'It gave Udinese a lift. The second goal was an unfortunate goal. They played well, Liverpool, and it will be a tough game.

'Obviously they missed, or didn't start with, half a dozen players who will be playing against us. Steven (Gerrard) didn't start, (Luis) Suarez didn't start. (Raheem) Sterling didn't start. I'm expecting a completely different side. Maybe three players who started will play against us.'

Beaten: But Pulis expects Liverpool to bounce back

Beaten: But Pulis expects Liverpool to bounce back

Despite ominous signs that Liverpool are returning to their best after a lacklustre beginning to the season, Pulis is refusing to focus on anything other than his preparation.

'You can never call a game,' the Potters boss said. 'The players have trained really well during the week and then you play poorly on the Saturday and then you'll have another occasion where the lads won't train so well during the week and they'll get a result.

'It's a funny old game so it will be the team who turns up and plays well and hopefully we will get a few breaks. Udinese got a few and ended up winning the game so we need a few breaks.'

Pulis, who was at Anfield for the Reds' European tie this week, expects the former Liverpool players in the Stoke squad to receive a warm welcome if they take to the pitch against their former club.

'They will enjoy it, I'm sure they will enjoy it,' Pulis said of Crouch, Owen and Adam.

'Being there (to watch Liverpool play Udinese) and speaking to people on the door, they're all looking forward to seeing the boys back which is lovely.

'But they're good boys, Crouchy, Michael Owen and I think Charlie was well-liked there too, so they're good lads going back and the supporters understand that.'

The Potters boss is one of the longest serving managers in the Premier League, and despite Liverpool's poor start to the season – their worst in a century – he believes Brendan Rodgers should be given time to settle in and make an impact.

'It's a great football club with a fantastic tradition and Brendan is a very lucky guy to have a crack at that and take that club forward,' Pulis said.

'I think he understands that and recognises it. He needs backing which I'm sure they'll give him otherwise they wouldn't have appointed him.

'The Premier League, having been in it – this is my fifth year – you have good runs and bad runs and as a manager you have to deal with it. Football is an emotional industry. It's not like any other industry.

'It runs and thrives on emotion and players go up and down. They get very excited and they get very down in the dumps and you have to manage those situations and the players are the same.

'Winning is brilliant. Anybody could manage a team that wins week-in, week-out. It's dealing with that disappointment and how to handle that disappointment when things are not going so well.'

Blackburn 0 Wolves 1: Soko goal sinks Rovers as fans flock back to Ewood

UPDATED:

Wolves striker Bakary Sako's spectacular strike 12 minutes from time ensured Blackburn's first home game of the post Steve Kean era ended in defeat.

A crowd of 17,034 was comfortably Rovers' highest of the season as hoards of disgruntled fans returned to Ewood Park to mark the end of Kean's deeply unpopular reign.

But they were subjected to a lacklustre performance as caretaker boss Eric Black stuck with the five-man defence that secured a goalless draw at Nottingham Forest in midweek, leaving forwards Jordan Rhodes and Colin Kazim-Richards to probe manfully with little service.

Rhodes had claims for penalties rejected in each half and his strike partner spurned Rovers' best chance shortly after Sako's magnificent long-range effort left goalkeeper Paul Robinson with no chance.

Stale Solbakken's Wolves leapfrog their opponents to go third on the back of three consecutive wins on the road, while Blackburn fall to ninth with no victory in four matches.

Wolves started the brighter of the two sides and Sako drew a fine early save from Robinson, firing a loose ball through a crowd of defenders.

Moments after a robust challenge from Karl Henry on Kazim-Richards went unpunished, Rovers had a penalty appeal waved away by referee Nigel Miller when Rhodes went to ground under the attentions of Richard Stearman.

The visitors should have taken the lead in the 19th minute, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake thudding a header against the post from Kevin Foley's cross.

Kazim-Richards almost found a vital touch at the end of Martin Olsson's teasing left-wing cross before the Blackburn striker was clattered on the knee with half an hour gone – Henry failing to escape a booking on this occasion following a heated altercation.

Rhodes' poachers instincts were on display five minutes before half-time when he collected the scraps from a goalmouth scramble to force a reaction stop from Wolves keeper Carl Ikeme.

The Scotland international striker had another penalty shout turned down early in the second half when he grappled with Roger Johnson and continued to look like Rovers' main threat despite little ammunition.

In the 51st minute Blackburn winger Fabio Nunes mishit a cross that landed on the top of the net with Ikeme scrambling.

Wolves got bodies in the way of speculative efforts from Bradley Orr, Danny Murphy and Kazim-Richards before the visitors regained the attacking impetus they showed in the first half.

Substitute Anthony Forde might have done better when he curled beyond the far post following excellent work from Sako.

In he 78th minute, Sako decided to do the work himself to glorious effect.
Blackburn only partially cleared a corner and the ball fell to the Frenchman, who took a fine first touch to engineer space and rifled a superb 25-yard effort beyond Robinson.

Rovers almost levelled moments later when Nunes produced a delicious cross that caused confusion between Ikeme and Wolves centre-back Christophe Berra, but Kazim-Richards could not direct his close-range header goalwards.

As the hosts belatedly committed men forward, Forde burst forward on the counter attack in stoppage time but blazed wide with only Robinson to beat and fellow substitute Ronald Zubar unmarked.

Alan Pardew blames agents for Newcastle form

Pardew lashes out at meddling agents as he defends poor Newcastle form

UPDATED:

19:38 GMT, 2 September 2012

Fantasy football 2012

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has hit out at the agents who distracted his players during the transfer window with talk of big-money moves.

Pardew watched the Magpies scratch out a 1-1 Barclays Premier League draw with Aston Villa at St James' Park in which several of his key men were far from at their best.

The likes have Cheick Tiote, who was missing on Sunday through injury, Yohan Cabaye, Hatem Ben Arfa and Demba Ba among others were linked with summer moves away from Tyneside, none of which materialised as the club held firm.

Annoyed: Alan Pardew thinks his players have been distracted

However, Pardew believes at least some of his side's lacklustre early-season form can be attributed to what was going on behind the scenes before Friday's transfer deadline.

He said: 'I have some sympathy for players because if people or agents – and not necessarily their own agent, a different agent – call them and offer them double their money, it's going to affect you.

'It's not just us, it's other clubs. There are some terrible people and agents in and around the game who do things like that, ring a player up and promise him the earth, say “I can do the deal”, and they are not even their agent. It goes on.'

In the event, it was one of those players, Ben Arfa, who rescued a point for Newcastle with a trademark stunning strike.

Villa had taken a deserved lead through Ciaran Clark's 22nd-minute header with the home side lacking any real cohesion.

But the Frenchman took it upon himself to drag them back into the game with 59 minutes played when he cut in from the left and smashed a right-foot shot high past keeper Brad Guzan and into the top corner.

Pardew said: 'Hatem is a wonderfully-gifted footballer. I didn't actually realise it was his right foot until I just watched the replay because I didn't expect him to hit it with that power.

'He has got exceptional power in

'When
we get three or four like that, we are a really, really good side.
Unfortunately, we haven't at the moment, we have got one or two just
below that.'

Opposite number Paul Lambert left the north east delighted with the efforts of his players after they collected their first point of the season following a tough start.

He said: 'I thought we were well worthy of it, to be perfectly honest. We came here, a really difficult place to play with the crowd right on Newcastle's side.

'The young lads were excellent throughout the game. It took a wonder-goal to pin us back and we also had really good chances to win the game.

'But I was delighted with the way they played, they were very, very good.'

Lambert took the bold decision to drop
36-year-old keeper Shay Given and replace him with Guzan, although the
American fully justified his inclusion with fine saves from Papiss Cisse
before the break and Cabaye at the death.

The manager said: 'Any decision you make to leave anybody out is really, really tough.

'Shay is a world-class goalkeeper and has been for the last 15 years, but I made a decision I thought was right for the football club and the two saves Brad made, one in the first half and the free-kick at the end, were world class.

'It's the team that's more important and I am sure Shay understands that the team is the most important thing.

'I spoke to him yesterday. He was disappointed, but it's not changed my opinion of Shay Given. He is a world-class goalkeeper. I just thought this was the right decision.'

Blackburn 1 Hull 0: Kazim-Richards winner not enough to silence anti-Kean chants

Blackburn Colin Kazim-Richards scored his second goal in as many games as a lacklustre Blackburn edged past Hull at Ewood Park in the npower Championship.

On-loan Galatasary forward Kazim-Richards broke the deadlock in the 77th minute on a night where under-fire Rovers boss Steve Kean received a familiar barracking from his own supporters.

Chances were at a premium throughout and the three centre-backs Steve Bruce selected for Hull were largely untroubled by Blackburn attacks lacking tempo and guile.

The visitors produced the only effort on target in the first half as Nick Proschwitz extended Paul Robinson in the Rovers goal.

But Kazim-Richards was on hand to follow up his strike in Saturday's opening draw at Ipswich after City failed to deal with Dickson Etuhu's teasing cross.

Subsequent chants of '1-0 and we want Kean out' underlined the fact the locals remain far from satisfied.

Veteran Portugal striker Nuno Gomes dropped to the Blackburn bench, while there was a debut for countryman Fabio Nunes as one of three changes made by Kean.

Corry Evans and Alex Bruce were on the field as substitutes when Hull netted the only goal against Brighton on the opening day and were rewarded with starts.

A measured pass from recalled Blackburn midfielder David Dunn released Jason Lowe down the right in the third minute and his cut back was steered wide from 12 yards by Kazim-Richards.

Nunes rode a rash challenge from Evans to produce dangerous cross that Alex Bruce hacked out the goalmouth.

Moments later Rovers again found joy down the left flank when Kazim-Richards glanced wide from Marcus Olsson's centre.

These were no more than half chances, though, with lone forward Kazim-Richards often cutting a forlorn figure among a well-stocked Hull defence.

As the chants of 'Kean out' rumbled ever louder during the first Ewood Park contest since Blackburn's relegation from the Barclays Premier League, Hull fashioned a chance – Robinson pushing over after Sone Aluko set Tigers striker Proschwitz free in the area after 26 minutes .

There was another scare for Blackburn four minutes before half-time when centre-back Scott Dann produced an clumsy slice behind on the end of Liam Rosenior's searching cross from the right.

Upon the resumption another delivery from Hull wing-back Rosenior dipped over Robinson but Joe Dudgeon could only steer into the side netting at the back post.

Rosenior made a vital contribution at the other end midway through the half, decisively glancing Bradley Orr's cross behind with Kazim-Richards poised.

Rovers were now playing with a second striker after Gomes' introduction with an hour played, and the substitute had a hand when the winner arrived.

The 36-year-old chested down Etuhu's floated ball from the right and his prod across goal prompted a scramble, featuring an unsightly attempted scissor-kick from Olsson, which Kazim-Richards concluded by rifling home.

Manchester United will keep spending on players, says David Gill

We'll keeping splashing the cash on stars, vows Gill despite Man United's lacklustre start on New York Stock Exchange

UPDATED:

08:10 GMT, 11 August 2012

Fantasy football 2012

David Gill has promised Manchester United will continue to invest in top-class players despite a disappointing start to the club's bid to raise money in America.

The Glazer family banked 75million from Manchester United’s controversial flotation on the New York Stock Exchange on Friday — but that was up to 30m less than expected.

Avram and Joel Glazer rang the opening bell on Wall Street as 16.6 million shares, equal to 10 per cent of the club, were publicly traded.

However, the opening share price of 9 was lower than the 10-13 initially proposed by the Glazers’ advisers.

At the top end, that would have allowed the American owners and United to split profits of 210m. Instead, the flotation is expected to raise a total of around 150m, with half going to the Glazers.

It gives United an overall market value of 1.5billion, which falls short of the 1.8bn the owners were believed to have quoted Qatar Holdings when they enquired about buying the club last year.

Chief executive Gill joined the Glazer

shares in United were publicly traded for the first time in seven years
while traders wore the team’s red kit.

And Gill believes Manchester United will continue to grow despite a disappointing share price when the club was listed.

'We fully understand and the owners
fully understand that what happens on the pitch is crucial to us and we
will make sure there are sufficient funds to invest in the team going
forward,' said Gill.

He claimed the arrival of the Glazers
and the debt the club subsequently incurred had not hampered the success
Sir Alex Ferguson's men had enjoyed on the pitch. And he pinpointed the
example of their shirt sponsorship deal with Chevrolet as proof that
their growth revenue remained as strong as ever.

'We've won four Premier Leagues, we've been to the Champions League final three times, we've had ongoing success on the pitch.

'We're comfortable with the leverage
we've had and we believe that given the growth opportunity we've got
ahead of us – for example we've signed Chevrolet to a seven-year shirt
sponsorship commencing in 2014, which is over twice what our current
shirt sponsors make – we've got a lot of interesting and good
opportunities to improve our cash flow going forward.'

The lower flotation price comes after
the Glazer family, which also owns the Tampa Bay Buccaneers American
football team, previously failed to garner sufficient support to sell
shares on exchanges in Hong Kong and Singapore.

However, United, which claims to have a
global fan base of about 660million and has won a record 19 league
titles, is still one of the world's most valuable sports teams.

Although the listing has been planned
for some time, the Glazer family originally claimed all the proceeds
would go towards United's debt, angering fans.

A successful initial public offering
would reportedly result in investors owning 42% of the shares available
but only carrying voting rights of 1.3%.

Trading under the stock market ticker Manu, shares rose but then pulled back to stand still at the 14 US dollar mark.

Shavaz Dhalla, financial trader at
Spreadex, said: 'After opening positively, possibly caused by smaller
retail investors looking to pick up a token share, the club's share
price slowly began to retrace and drop early gains. Clearly, investors
who are actually looking for a return as well as a shareholder voting
right are steering clear.'

Celtic aim for Champions League glory

Kayal believes a huddle will help as Celtic plot Champions League progression

Celtic players have staged a dressing-room summit in order to plot a path towards the Champions League group stages.

The SPL champions travel to Helsinki on Tuesday with a slender 2-1 lead from the third round, first-leg qualifier.

And Beram Kayal says the players have reaffirmed their desire to secure a place in the final champions qualifying round in Finland on Wednesday.

‘The players spoke together about the big need to win the games to be in Champions League,’ Kayal said.

‘Everyone wants to feel that moment of being there with a big club like Celtic.

‘In the team now, we have a lot of players around 23 and 24 years of age and we train together and are together in the dressing room.

‘We spoke together about it and believe we are going to do it.’

Captain Scott Brown remains an injury doubt with a hip problem. James Forrest and Charlie Mulgrew will return, however, after missing a lacklustre win over Aberdeen on Saturday.

Determined to atone for previous setbacks at an early stage of the competitive season, Kayal insisted Celtic are ready this time.

‘Our focus is only on Wednesday and we want to do the job,’ he said. ‘We spoke before Sion and Braga and we believed, but some things didn’t go well and we haven’t played in the Champions League in the past two years.

‘But we’re more experienced now and had a Europa League season last year against some great teams, including Atletico Madrid who went on to win the trophy.’

Failure would damage manager Neil Lennon’s hopes of strengthening his squad, forcing Celtic to sell one of their star names to an English club.

Linked with Southampton recently, Kayal shrugged aside that prospect, adding: ‘I don’t take the decisions about players being sold or staying here, I just look at the positives.’

The next likely departure from Parkhead is defender Josh Thompson. Aberdeen are keen to secure a loan deal for the towering central defender, who played a trial for troubled Portsmouth last week.

Celtic, meanwhile, have dismissed reports of an 800,000 bid for 20-year-old Rosenborg midfielder Markus Henriksen.
