Manchester City striker John Guidetti returned to Blues colours for the first time in 18 months today – and marked the occasion with a goal.

Guidetti has been out of action for nine months with a knee injury and also had an extended spell on loan at Feyenoord.

The Swede took just nine minutes to hit the target, sliding in to finish off Marcos Lopes' cross.

Jose Angel Pozo and Albert Rusnak wrapped up a 3-1 win for City, with Reading's consolation coming through Lawson D'Ath.

Guidetti is yet to feature in a Premier League game for City, but proved his talent when on loan last season with Feyenoord, where he scored 20 goals in just 23 appearances.

He signed a new three-year deal with the Barclays Premier League champions in October last year.

West Ham, Southampton, Sunderland and Fiorentina have shown interest in Guidetti and City are keen for him to gain Premier League experience so could send him out on loan.

Ireland's injury crisis worsens with O'Connell doubtful for Six Nations ahead of back surgery

Former Lions captain Paul O'Connell is a major doubt for Ireland's upcoming Six Nations campaign after his provincial side Munster announced that he would be undergoing surgery on a back injury that has blighted his season.

O'Connell has been dogged by injury in recent years and has only played two games for Munster this season with the back injury also forcing him to sit out Ireland's November internationals.

A statement from Munster revealed that the 33-year-old lock would undergo back surgery at the earliest opportunity but did not give a time frame for how long his recovery would take.

Ulster wing Tommy Bowe, the country's third highest try scorer of all time, was ruled out of the Six Nations earlier this month with a knee injury. Ireland open their campaign in Wales on February 2.

Robin van Persie's 17th goal of the season ensured Manchester United claimed yet another scalp on their march towards what they hope will be a 20th league title at Old Trafford.

Yet the performance of skipper Nemanja Vidic was equally notable, as he guided United to only their fourth Premier League clean sheet of the season after Gareth McAuley's early own goal had put the hosts in front against West Brom.

Plagued by injury for the past 16 months, and restored to the United line-up for the only the second time since his most recent knee operation, Serbian Vidic used all of his experience to ensure the hosts were not made to pay for a lacklustre second-half display.

And when Van Persie curled home a brilliant effort in the final minute, the Red Devils` handsome seven-point lead at the top of the table was preserved.

After all the furore around Ferguson's confrontation with Mike Dean on Boxing Day, mascot Fred the Red probably approached the United boss with a degree of trepidation as the pair met on the touchline prior to kick off.

The exchange was cordial, though, as was the jocular encounter between Ferguson and fourth official Phil Dowd shortly afterwards.

And once the match started, referee Jon Moss did little to get the United manager vexed, beyond an inexplicable free-kick against Tom Cleverley when the midfielder had been looking at a dropping ball on the edge of his own box when Billy Jones crashed into him.

Vidic was wide with a couple of headers and Gabriel Tamas turned away Michael Carrick's goalbound shot.

The nearest United went to doubling their lead was when Young strode onto a deflected Antonio Valencia cross.

He hit it sweetly on the half volley, only for former Red Devils keeper Ben Foster to respond with a brilliant save, which earned his slice of good fortune when he shoved the ball onto the crossbar and over.

Danny Welbeck – afforded a rare start in a central striking berth – and Shinji Kagawa – back for the first time since suffering a knee injury in October – both sparkled for the hosts, who were so obviously on top.

With a defence that has leaked so many goals this season, Ferguson would not have felt safe.

Yet the presence of Vidic offered some degree of comfort.

The Serbian has been absent so often over the past 15 months it has almost been forgotten what a calming influence he is.

His bravery is unquestioned too. And when Chris Brunt drilled a free-kick goalwards in the final throes of the opening period, it was no surprise Vidic should be the one to emerge from a crowd of bodies having headed it away.

However, with the clock ticking by and heavy rain continuing to pour down on a sodden surface that required a precautionary inspection a couple of hours before kick-off, United started to get stuck.

Young completely miskicked when Valencia's cross presented a golden opportunity on the hour, which offered a Baggies outfit already growing in self-belief more reason for optimism.

Had Brunt's piledriver been either side of David de Gea it surely would have brought the visitors level.

As it was, the shot went straight to the Spain keeper.

Little wonder Van Persie's arrival midway through the second period was greeted with such enthusiasm, underlining the Dutchman's influence since his summer move from Arsenal.

West Brom were in the mood, though.

And with United's passing becoming increasingly sloppy, they continued to push on with force.

Vidic needed to be in the right place to clear a Romelu Lukaku cross that threatened panic inside the United six-yard box and the sight of his fellow defenders throwing themselves at anything that moved, it had turned into an unedifying backs-to-the-wall effort so unlike the thrill-a-minute action this stadium has become used to.

Van Persie was denied by Foster with nine minutes remaining but the former England keeper could do nothing about the Dutchman's late shot, which curled expertly into the top corner from Paul Scholes' pass.

John Terry claims it's 'only a matter of time' before he returns to the Chelsea team.

In his programme notes for Chelsea's clash with Aston Villa Terry said: 'I'm doing well and just waiting for the swelling and bruising to calm down and then I can step things up.

'I'm outside doing ball work already and I can't wait to get back involved – it's just a matter of time to let things settle.'

Blow: John Terry suffered a setback in training during the week

The Blues captain has been out for several weeks with a knee injury.

He was originally aiming to be fit to feature in the Club World Cup but setbacks mean he is still unable to play.

On Friday Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez said: ‘He was training today and running on the pitch but he is not available yet. He was not training with the ball, just warming up.

‘Today was fine in the warm-up but then he gets a problem, it is one step forward, one step back.

'Hopefully it will be easier in the next few weeks. The problem is the inflammation and the knee is so complicated.

‘I hope he will be available at Christmas but I can’t guarantee anything. You can’t predict when he will be available.’

Benitez was confident Terry would not require further surgery and would not be drawn on reports the 32-year-old was close to opening talks on a new contract to replace the one that expires in 18 months.

Pressed on Terry's importance to Chelsea – there is a huge difference in their win-loss record with and without their skipper – Benitez said: 'If he's the captain, it's because he's a player that can be a leader.

'I have seen he has a great character.'

Loic Remy on Newcastle radar with Alan Pardew braced for Demba Ba bids

Remy on Newcastle radar with boss Pardew braced for Ba bids

Marseille striker Loic Remy is in Newcastle's sights as they attempt to avoid a January transfer window scramble.

Sportsmail understands the 25-year-old France international is a target as manager Alan Pardew steels himself for another month of uncertainty over current leading scorer Demba Ba.

The Magpies have played down previous links with the former Lyon, Lens and Nice forward, but with Ba yet to agree a new contract at St James' Park which would remove his infamous release clause, the club is understood to be ready to bolster the manager's attacking options.

Pardew has no desire to allow Senegal international Ba, who has 11 goals to his name so far this season, to leave Tyneside, and the player himself has repeatedly spoken of his happiness at the club.

However, amid speculation that Arsenal, Chelsea and QPR among others could be ready to battle it out for his signature next month, his admission in an interview with a French TV company that the Gunners would be an attractive proposition added to the sense of unease.

Ba also acknowledged that rumours were inevitable because of the release clause, but there is a growing feeling on Tyneside that a striker who was touted around in August, when there were no takers, is being hawked around Europe once again.

The former Hoffenheim player's situation is complicated. A proposed move to Stoke fell through two years ago when a medical identified a knee problem and, having eventually opted to join West Ham – where he scored seven times in 12 appearances – he made a swift exit in the wake of their relegation and joined Newcastle on a free transfer.

The deal was structured to prevent the club taking a hit should major injury strike, but also to include the clause which could see him leave for 7.5million with the Magpies in line to receive only a fraction of the proceeds.

Plans in place: Magpies boss Alan Pardew knows he could lose Ba next month

However, 15 goals during the first half of last season confirmed both Ba's potency and his durability and Newcastle have spent much of the time since attempting to negotiate out the release clause.

In the meantime, the club have no intention of finding themselves in the position they did two years ago when Andy Carroll left in a 35million switch to Liverpool during the final hours of the winter window with no time left to find a replacement.

Remy is a man who has been on Pardew's radar for some time, as have Lille defender Mathieu Debuchy and FC Twente's Douglas, and the Toon manager's interest in all three is understood to be ongoing.

There is little doubt that the squad needs strengthening after a lack of depth was exposed by injury, suspension and the demands of the Europa League.

Scott Parker and Benoit Assou-Ekotto return for Tottenham v Swansea

Andre Villas-Boas has been given a boost with the return of Scott Parker and Benoit Assou-Ekotto to first-team training ahead of Tottenham's clash with Swansea on Sunday.

England midfielder Parker has not played a single match this season after suffering an Achilles injury during Euro 2012.

But Spurs' player of the year last season has featured at reserve and U21 level this week and is in contention for the Swans visit to White Hart Lane.

Manager Villas-Boas hinted that the returning players are likely to start from the bench rather than as part of the first team.

Assou-Ekotto meanwhile has only been able to play three matches this term, the latest of those on September 1, thanks to a knee injury.

The 28-year-old left-back tweeted: 'Training with the team today! I hope I'll remember the name of everyone.'

Centre-back Jan Vertonghen has been playing in his position and although he has coped well, will be happy to move back to his regular spot sooner rather than later.

Gareth Bale will train on Saturday but his hamstring injury is likely to keep him out of the match, along with Younes Kaboul who has a knee problem.

However centre-back Michael Dawson is likely to play after beating his own hamstring injury.
