Sunderland are closing in on a 4milllion-plus move for Swansea striker Danny Graham, as exclusively revealed in Sportsmail last week.

A deal could have been completed over the weekend but for Swansea being held up in their efforts to sign Kenwyne Jones as replacement.

Swansea still hope to reach an agreement with Stoke for Jones.

A stunning 90th-minute volley from Cameron Jerome secured a point for 10-man Stoke in a highly-eventful draw with strugglers Southampton at the Britannia Stadium.

The Potters looked like they would pay for uncharacteristically poor defending in the first half, but fought back and substitute Jerome had the final say with a thumping volley from 30 yards.

Stoke had conceded only four goals at home in the Barclays Premier League all season and boasted the best defensive record in the division, but shipped three in the first half.

MCaptain Ryan Shawcross and full-back
Geoff Cameron were both serving one-match suspensions for picking up
five yellow cards, with Matthew Upson and Ryan Shotton coming in, and
the reshuffle seemed to unsettle the Potters.

Poor defending allowed Rickie Lambert to open the scoring 10 minutes in
and, although Kenwyne Jones soon equalised, Jay Rodriguez was presented
with Saints' second in the 24th minute.

An Andy Wilkinson own goal in the 36th minute summed up a miserable half
for the hosts, but they responded in the second period and Matthew
Upson pulled one back in the 67th minute.

Steven Nzonzi was sent off soon after but Stoke kept pressing and got
their reward, sending Southampton back into the bottom three.

Defensive stability has been one of Stoke's key strengths and there were
signs the changes would have a big effect when Southampton scored in
the 10th minute.

It was the first chance of the game and would have infuriated Stoke boss
Tony Pulis as none of his defenders cut out Guly Do Prado's cross and
Lambert had the simple task of poking in at the back post.

The hosts should have been level inside two minutes when Nzonzi's shot
was deflected to Jones in space at the back post, but somehow he skewed
his shot wide.

However, the big striker made amends in the 16th minute in some style with a lovely backheel from Ryan Shotton's low cross

Stoke looked the more likely to add to their tally at that point but
they well and truly shot themselves in the foot to hand Southampton a
second goal in the 24th minute.

There did not look too much danger when Lambert swung in a cross from
the right but Robert Huth beat his goalkeeper to the ball and poked it
against the bar, leaving Rodriguez a tap-in.

The visitors had their tails up, with Jason Puncheon causing a lot of
trouble on the right, and he twisted and turned his way past Andy
Wilkinson before firing in a shot that Asmir Begovic pushed behind.

Puncheon played a key part in Saints' third goal after 36 minutes, with
his cross headed towards goal by Lambert before Wilkinson stabbed it
over the line.

Stoke started the second half brightly, no doubt responding to a few
choice words from Pulis, and Michael Kightly fired in a shot from
distance that Kelvin Davis comfortably held onto.

There was a worrying moment for Pulis when Huth and Wilkinson clashed
heads, drawing blood from both, but they were bandaged up and able to
continue, although Huth had to change his shorts as well as his shirt.

Pulis threw on a third striker as Jerome replaced Matthew Etherington,
and Stoke began to pepper the Southampton box with crosses.

It was not all about the hosts, though, and Saints really should have
added a fourth in the 65th minute as they split Stoke's defence open
once again.

Lambert played in Rodriguez, who was denied by a fine save from Begovic,
but the ball fell to Do Prado with the goal gaping only for the striker
to shoot wide.

Three an easy: Rodriguez (left) looked to have won the game for the visitors

And that miss looked very costly a minute later as Stoke pulled one
back. For once Southampton failed to deal with a corner and Upson
squeezed his shot under Davis, who should have done better.

The Potters then appealed vociferously for a penalty when Jose Fonte
appeared clearly to handle a cross in a challenge with Jones, but
referee Mark Clattenburg was unmoved.

And Stoke's hopes of getting something from the game were then dealt a
real blow when Nzonzi was shown a straight red card in the 71st minute
for a challenge on Jack Cork.

The midfielder caught Cork with a painful blow but it looked a harsh
decision and Nzonzi was clearly unhappy as he left the pitch.

Pulis made his final change, sending on Peter Crouch for Kightly,
meaning Michael Owen would have to be content with a return to the bench
after two months out of the squad.

Jerome was booked for protesting that Maya Yoshida had handled in the
area as the hosts desperately sought a late equaliser, and when the
striker did put the ball in the net shortly after he was rightly flagged
for offside.

Jerome was not to be denied, though, crashing in a tremendous shot off
the underside of the bar as the clock ticked towards 90 minutes, and
Stoke might even have won it but Davis kept out a Crouch header at the
death.

Two-goal hero Jonathan Walters hailed his side's character and work ethic after Stoke recovered from a nightmare start to claim a 3-1 Barclays Premier League win over Liverpool.

There were only 32 seconds on the clock when Luis Suarez won a penalty which Steven Gerrard converted to put Liverpool ahead at the Britannia Stadium.

However, Stoke stormed back and within 10 minutes had turned the game on its head through goals from Walters and Kenwyne Jones, and then a second from boyhood Everton fan Walters just after half-time sealed the victory for Tony Pulis' men.

Walters was full of praise for his side after they extended their unbeaten run to nine matches, telling Sky Sports 1: 'We all work for each other, right from the back to the front. It was a full team effort from us today and a great win for us.

'We haven't conceded many this year, and to concede so early…but we've always got fight in us, and there was never any chance we were just going to lie down and take it.

'So from 1-0 down we showed great character to get back into the game and some good play from all over the team, especially the second half.'

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers felt his side should have done much better with all three goals they conceded and, as a result of their defensive failings, said they did not deserve to get anything out of the game.

He said: 'It was a great start for us, when you come away from home it's great to go a goal up, but we just gave away poor goals tonight. I think all three goals were actually quite straightforward to defend.

'Obviously Martin Skrtel slips (for the first), which is unfortunate, but the other two goals we've got to do much better than that. So that was the disappointment really.

'We got into some good areas but ultimately when you come to places like here, which is a difficult place to come, you've got to defend better or else you get nothing, and we probably deserve nothing because of that.'

Rodgers also praised Stoke and the work being done by Pulis.

'I've always said they probably don't quite get the credit they deserve. Tony's done a brilliant job here, keeping them in this division and keeping them progressing,' he added.

Villa striker Darren Bent made his
return to action as the home side's youngsters stood up to the physical
challenge presented by Stoke.

Bent made his first appearance for
nearly six weeks midway through the second period, but was unable to
inspire Villa to gain the three points.

Paul Lambert's side were well worthy
of a share of the spoils, though, as they extended their unbeaten run to
four games and edged further away from the relegation zone.

Villa's 'tiny tots' looked
ready-made for Stoke to impose their physical presence on them, but they
passed the challenge with flying colours.

The back three of Chris Herd, Ciaran
Clark and Nathan Baker coped admirably with the threat of Kenwyne Jones
and then former Villa striker Peter Crouch.

Stoke will also take heart from
extending their unbeaten run to six games, from which they have
collected 14 points, and they have now registered eight clean sheets
this season.

Villa began brightly and Gabriel
Agbonlahor picked out the run of top scorer Christian Benteke into the
Stoke box, but Shotton was alert to the situation and tidied up.

The hosts forced three early corners, although Stoke dealt comfortably enough with Barry Bannan's crosses into the danger area.

But the Potters were indebted to a
crucial block from skipper Ryan Shawcross to keep out Benteke's
close-range volley after Clark had headed the ball back across goal.

Matthew Lowton then had the
confidence to cut inside and create space for himself but his
left-footed drive did not extend Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

Bannan then curled a free-kick over the bar after Benteke had been brought down by Geoff Cameron 20 yards out.

Villa knocked the ball around in
confident style, with Stoke content to soak up the pressure and try to
hit the home side on the counter-attack.

Stoke midfielder Steven N'Zonzi
appeared to flick a hand in the face of Villa centre-back Baker in the
build-up to a Potters corner, but both players were spoken to by referee
Roger East.

Villa were looking the more likely to break the deadlock.

Stoke were incensed by a

time, but it escaped any punishment.

Villa started the second half
brightly and Begovic went down to his left to cling onto Benteke's

Tempers were becoming frayed and Villa keeper Brad Guzan squared up to Jones after being barged into when collecting a cross.

Benteke continued to ask questions of
Stoke and some trickery inside the area created half a chance, but Huth

Lambert brought on Bent and Stephen
Ireland for Agbonlahor and Holman midway through the second half while
Stoke replaced Matthew Etherington and Jones with Cameron Jerome and
Crouch. Shotton became the first player to be yellow-carded after 75
minutes after fouling Ireland.

Then came his stoppage-time red card, although there was no time left for Villa to cash in on their numerical advantage.

Peter Crouch praised by Tony Pulis after win over Swansea City

Pulis heaps praise on 'unplayable' Crouch after double downs Swans

|

UPDATED:

18:44 GMT, 29 September 2012

Stoke boss Tony Pulis felt match-winner Peter Crouch was 'unplayable' at times during Saturday afternoon's 2-0 Barclays Premier League victory over Swansea – but is not about to demand the striker is given an England recall.

Crouch – who last played for his country in 2010 – scored both the Potters' goals in the clash at the Britannia Stadium to take his tally for the season to five in all competitions and earn the Staffordshire outfit their first win of the campaign.

Twice taking advantage of poor Swansea defending, the tall frontman headed home in the 12th minute and added a second nine minutes before the interval, tucking the ball away on the follow-up after Michel Vorm had parried his initial shot.

Two good: Pulis described Crouch as 'unplayable'

Two good: Pulis described Crouch as 'unplayable'

Crouch looked intent on securing his hat-trick in the second period, but headed one effort on to the bar and then missed with an attempted overhead kick before being substituted.

While disappointed the 31-year-old had been unable to complete his treble, Pulis was full of praise for his performance – although he was keen to stress that whether or not the player might be selected for England again was a matter for Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson, who has claimed Crouch refused to be on the stand-by list for Euro 2012.

Reflecting on Stoke's display, Pulis said: 'I thought in the first half we were very good.

'The worst thing that happened was half-time – we came out very slow and sloppy in the second half and Swansea controlled the play.

'But we got back into it in the last 20 minutes and I'm just disappointed Crouchy didn't get his hat-trick.'

Explaining his decision to take Crouch off for Kenwyne Jones late on, Pulis said: 'I just wanted to give Kenwyne a bit of time, and the header against the crossbar – that should be food and drink for Peter.

'The scissors kick is a different thing – I'll speak to him on Monday about that. I can't afford for him to get injured!'

He added: 'I'm not reluctant (to talk about Crouch and England), but Roy has a lot of experience and the last thing I want to do is tell him what team to pick.

'It has to be up to him. I don't think Peter can do any more than score goals and play well, and you have seen him today – in the first half he was unplayable.'

Having struggled in the first half, Swansea were better early on after the restart, although there was controversy in the 55th minute when their defender Ben Davies was booked for diving in the box.

Up and running: Pulis saw his side pick up their first win of the season

Up and running: Pulis saw his side pick up their first win of the season

'Simulation' had been a hot topic in the build-up to the game, with Pulis accusing Chelsea players of being guilty of it in Stoke's 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge last weekend and saying it was something that needed clamping down on.

Asked after Saturday's contest about the Davies incident, Swansea manager Michael Laudrup – whose side have now lost three league matches in a row – said: 'From the bench it seemed like he was touched and that it was a penalty, but having seen it a couple of times more, I have more doubts.

'I don't think we have to go into arguing about whether it's a penalty or a yellow card. It can be in between – it is possible that it's not a penalty and you don't have to give a yellow card.

'In this case, the referee thinks Ben is trying to dive and gives him a yellow card. All I can say is that this is a 19-year-old boy and I don't think he has that in him. I don't think he tried to dive.'

Chelsea have opened negotiations with Marseille over a 15million move for Loic Remy.

The France international travelled to London with his agent for talks after Chelsea failed in another move for Bayer Leverkusen striker Andre Schurrle.

Leverkusen refused to take Chelsea's calls after sporting director Rudi Voeller insisted there was not enough time to find a replacement for 21-year-old German international Schurrle.

So Chelsea switched to cash-strapped Marseille who need to offload Remy. The 25-year-old, who has also been considered by Tottenham, will provide cover and support for Fernando Torres and Daniel Sturridge, who was keen to move to Liverpool.

Remy said: 'Yes there were discussions with Tottenham, but they came to nothing and they will not continue.'

Meanwhile, Stoke striker Kenwyne Jones's hopes of a move to Marseille have been dashed by Stephane Mbia’s move to Queen's Park Rangers.

Stoke were holding out hope that Mbia would join them and allow a swap deal for Jones to go the other way.

The deal also hinged on Remy or Jordan Ayew leaving Marseille. Ayew had been offered to Stoke, Wigan and Reading but is staying in France. The French transfer window remains open until Tuesday and a deal for Jones could yet be revived.

Swindon pulled off a significant upset in the Capital One Cup second round as a James Collins hat-trick helped the npower League One side claim a dramatic extra-time victory at Stoke.

The Robins shocked their Barclays Premier League opponents in the opening period as Collins pounced upon a mistake by Potters goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen to make it 1-0 in the 27th minute and then doubled their lead by nodding in just prior to half-time.

Stoke salvaged extra-time after the break through strikes from Kenwyne Jones and Jon Walters, but Paulo Di Canio's Swindon would not be denied in the additional period, with defender Aden Flint (105) and Collins (119) netting either side of Peter Crouch's header (111) for the hosts.

MATCH FACTS:

To follow

Stoke were playing their second match
in just over 48 hours following Sunday's 0-0 draw with Arsenal and
manager Tony Pulis refreshed his first XI by making six changes from
that game.

The Potters looked anything but
invigorated in the first half, though, against a lively Swindon team
whose record for the campaign going into the contest showed no defeats
and no goals conceded in four matches, and included a 3-0 victory over
Championship outfit Brighton in the previous round.

The Robins appeared comfortable from
the off and after Tommy Miller had sent a shot into the arms of
Sorensen, Rafaelle De Vita struck wide.

It seemed only a matter of time
before the hosts settled down and they issued a couple of warnings at
the other end, Cameron Jerome firing in a speculative effort from
distance, Jones heading one cross over and the pair then getting in each
other's way as they attempted to meet another.

Stoke were showing some sloppiness at
the back, though, with Collins just unable to capitalise on one
defensive lapse before he made the most of a further error to put
Swindon ahead.

Jay McEveley delivered the ball towards the box where it was fumbled by Sorensen, allowing Collins to guide it into the net.

Pure delight: James Collins celebrates scoring

The Potters needed to wake up but it
was the visitors who continued to dictate proceedings, with Andy
Williams drilling at Sorensen from the edge of the area.

Anything Stoke were creating Jones was heading too high and four minutes before the break, they were a further goal behind.

Collins was the scorer once again,
nodding in De Vita's corner, and the Republic of Ireland Under-21
striker nearly completed his hat-trick moments later, seeing his shot
cleared off the line.

The attacking flurry from Swindon did
not let up and De Vita hit the post just before the whistle went for
the interval, met by boos from the Stoke fans.

Pulis opted not to make any
substitutions at half-time and his team continued to look shaky in
defence as the second period got under way, although there was a decent
block made to deny De Vita.

Going forward, wide men Jermaine
Pennant and Michael Kightly were doing their best to apply some pressure
and in the 63rd minute, the latter provided the cross as Jones
demonstrated some accuracy to head Stoke back into the game.

Pulis made a treble substitution in
the 77th minute with Crouch, Walters and debutant Jamie Ness coming on
for Jones, Jerome and Ryan Shotton and the reshuffle soon paid off,
Walters stroking the ball in with four minutes of normal time remaining.

Stoke finished the 90 minutes with
plenty of momentum, but Crouch and Pennant were unable to apply the
finishing touch and the game went into extra-time.

The Potters continued to look
threatening into the additional period, but Swindon sprang a shock on
the stroke of half-time as Flint headed in at the back-post to put them
in front once more.

Crouch levelled after the break with a
headed effort of his own, but the Robins then incredibly snatched it at
the death as Collins slid in a minute from time to complete his treble
and a famous win for Di Canio's men.

Stoke boss Tony Pulis is still hopeful of bringing in former England striker Michael Owen.

The 32-year-old is a free agent after being released by Manchester United this summer, although his wage demands could make it difficult for Stoke to do a deal.

Pulis is also conscious that he already has five strikers on the books in Peter Crouch, Jon Walters, Mamady Sidibe, Kenwyne Jones and Cameron Jerome, and he would probably need to sell one of the latter two to make room for Owen.

The Stoke manager said: 'Michael hasn't gone anywhere and it's still a possibility. There's still stuff happening and going on. Whether we can do a deal or not is another matter.

'I've always said he's a good player and someone I think people in the club would like to have around. He's a great professional as well and Crouchy has shown what great professionals can do for the football club.'

Stoke have already signed three players this summer, winger Michael Kightly, midfielder Jamie Ness and defender Geoff Cameron.

Pulis is still hoping to add full-back Goran Popov on a season-long loan from Dynamo Kiev, but the Macedonia international has hit problems with his work permit.

Pulis said: 'He's got to go to a tribunal on Wednesday so we'll see.'

Whether Stoke can complete that deal or not, Pulis is confident there will be new faces at the Britannia Stadium before the transfer window closes in two weeks' time.

He said: 'We're still looking to do some business if we can, and we always tend to do our business at the back end of the transfer window.'
