Blair Turgott stole the show with a hat-trick on Tuesday afternoon as West Ham saw off QPR 3-1 in a friendly at Upton Park.

The 18-year-old scored twice in the first half before completing his hat-trick early in the second period in a match which saw both sides field a number of players from their first-team squad.

Adel Taarabt scored a free-kick just after half-time for QPR, who gave run-outs to Nedum Onuoha,
Jamie Mackie, Esteban Granero, Jay Bothroyd, Shaun Derry, Luke Young and Junior Hoilett.

Turgott opened the scoring in the 12th minute, with a long-range effort that flew into the top corner, before adding a second 16 minutes later with a measured, curling finish into the bottom corner.

Taarabt's free-kick two minutes after half-time reduced QPR's deficit to 2-1 before Turgott cut inside right back Young before firing an unstoppable shot into the top corner in the 52nd minute.

The game also featured Canada Under 20 international goalkeeper Jordan Santiago, 21, who is on trail with West Ham.

Liverpool debts rise to 87.2million after 21.8million loss

In the Red! Liverpool debt rises to 87.2million… and instalments on Downing and Henderson transfers are to blame

– a restructured period designed to bring alignment with the football season.

However, the loss was less than the 49.3million made the previous year and done against the backdrop of no European football, although Liverpool did get to two cup finals, winning one.

Some of the deficit was as a result of investing heavily in the transfer market – and the costs associated with bringing in the likes of Stewart Downing (20million) and Jordan Henderson (16million) in the weeks preceding the accounting period – while offloading other players at a loss.

Costly: Kenny Dalglish unveils his new signings Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam, Doni and Stewart Downing

Costly: Kenny Dalglish unveils his new signings Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam, Doni and Stewart Downing

But with the club's owners Fenway
Sports Group firmly focused on the impending arrival of Financial Fair
Play Ayre stressed there was necessary work to be undertaken.

'The key message for me is that we are
continuing to transition to the point we have been working on for
several years under this ownership – which is to continue to improve
revenues and manage our cost base effectively,' he said.

'The biggest cost base without doubt
is player trading and player wages – but these accounts demonstrate that
we are still working hard to improve that.

'I take comfort in the fact that the
work we have done, some of which costs us a lot of money in this period
and beyond, looks pretty painful at the time.

'But as long as you invest in it and
manage it in the right way, then hopefully it bears fruit as we go
forward and gives us a better platform to exist on in a different
environment and in a world where we are expected to break even.

'You never take comfort from any business that makes a loss but I am pleased that we're making the progress we are making.'

In the period relating to these
accounts the club offloaded 11 players, including the likes of Milan
Jovanovic, Christian Poulsen and Raul Meireles – all signings by
previous managers.

The then boss Kenny Dalglish – the
cost of whose sacking last May was included in 9.5million of 'exceptional payments' – wanted reinforcements for his squad and that
meant players had to be moved on to make room.

Downing had a well-documented goal drought at Anfield, and his Wikipedia page was hacked to reflect that.

'We see a big charge within the
accounts for amortisation (depreciation in value) of players that have
been disposed of within the period that perhaps came in on a higher
cost,' Ayre told the Liverpool Echo.

'We've made losses as a result of
selling them but at the same time we've improved our longer-term
position in terms of our wage bill by reducing the wages for those
particular contracts.

'These accounts show investment in the
squad – players like Jose Enrique and Sebastian Coates – and as we have
seen in accounts that flow from that – we will continue to invest in
the squad both for improved playing performance but also a far better
structure in deals that we have with players.

'So we are fortunate in some sense in that we know we are improving in this year and we are continuing to improve.'

In addition to transfer-related costs
captain Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez were among five players who
signed new contracts during the accounting period, since the end of
which FSG have injected 46.8million via a non-interest bearing
intercompany loan.

Turnover increased by 5million but so did wages, with the salary bill now around 142million or 70 per cent of income.

Out of the big league: Liverpool have not played in the Champions League since being eliminated from the group stage in 2009 and this will have affected their financial situation

'It's good to see that even in a year
where we have a downturn in fortunes by not playing European football,
we can bolster our revenues by performing in other areas,' added Ayre.

'It shows that we have a very strong and growing business that sits behind the football club.

'And as we approach things like Financial Fair Play and that type of environment, that puts us in a very strong position.'

The figures do not include the record
25million-a-season six-year sponsorship deal with kit manufacturers
Warrior, which came into effect last summer and could net the club a
similar amount through associated merchandising.

'We've had record sales of their products throughout this year,' said Ayre.

'We've also seen new sponsors come on board, notably Chevrolet and Garuda Airlines.

'If you have got a successfully
performing team and you have got an infrastructure which we now have and
the business ability to deliver revenue, then both of them coming
together would be a fantastic solution for the football club all round.'

Ronaldinho to make film with Blackburn owners Venky"s

Venky's always said they'd get Ronaldinho… and now they've finally signed him up! (Sorry Blackburn fans, it's just for a movie)

21:40 GMT, 28 December 2012

Blackburn Rovers owners Venky's persuaded Ronaldinho to put pen to, er, ball when he arrived in India to promote his new film.

The Brazilian World Cup winner has signed up with their film arm to make Ronaldinho versus Aliens, an animation inspired by Space Jam, which starred Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny.

The identity of the cartoon superstar to work with Ronaldinho is still a secret but if Venky’s, who are also poultry packers, haven’t signed up Rocky from Chicken Run, they’re missing a trick.

Ronaldinho was one of Venky's most ambitious transfer targets when they took over at Ewood Park in 2010, and now they've finally got their man. It's a shame for Rovers fans that he won't be playing any football, however.

Meanwhile, the appointment of Blackburn's new coaching team is on hold as a simmering boardroom battle at Ewood Park threatens to escalate into all-out civil war.

The club's global advisor Shebby Singh and managing director Derek Shaw have been at odds since Singh's arrival in the summer, and Shaw has flown to India to urge the club's owners Venky's to ditch the flamboyant Malaysian following this week's sacking of manager Henning Berg.

Singh is said to be unperturbed by events but the plan to install Kevin MacDonald as head coach alongside Judan Ali cannot proceed without Shaw approving the contracts.

Ali was at the club's Brockhall training ground on Friday and MacDonald expects to join him even though he is understood to have reservations about the arrangement.

Ali, who is set to become English football's first British Asian coach, is better known for his role in a Bollywood movie.

Max Chilton is set to be announced as the fourth Briton on the Formula One grid next season after finalising a deal with Marussia.

Chilton has long been expected to be the replacement for Charles Pic who has moved to rival outfit Caterham.

The Reigate-born driver got his first taste of a Formula One car on a purpose built circuit in Abu Dhabi this year when he took part in Friday testing.

Flamboyant Marussia co-owner Nikolai Fomenko is understood to have confirmed to Russian journalists that Chilton has indeed got the nod to replace Pic and will join Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and Paul di Resta in Formula One for the coming campaign.

In addition, BBC Formula One analyst and former team owner, Eddie Jordan, has subsequently stated that Chilton will be taking the step up from GP2, the rung below full-blown grand prix racing.

Chilton, 21, is the son of Grahame Chilton, the non-executive chairman of insurance giant Aon Benfield’s UK holding company who is reportedly worth around 100million.

However, he has previously stated that the estimated 9.5million funding he has secured to realise his Formula One dream does not come from the family coffers.

Harry Redknapp calls on Les Ferdinand and Clive Allen for QPR: EXCLUSIVE

EXCLUSIVE: Old Rs Ferdinand and Allen called in to help Redknapp's rescue mission

UPDATED:

01:40 GMT, 3 December 2012

Harry Redknapp is considering handing Les Ferdinand and Clive Allen places on his Queens Park Rangers backroom team.

The duo worked with the QPR manager at Tottenham and the 65-year-old boss is plotting a reunion at Loftus Road as he continues to put his stamp on the relegation-threatened club.

Redknapp has already added Kevin Bond and Joe Jordan to his staff, though their appointments will not be officially confirmed until Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki’s departures are approved.

Should Ferdinand and Allen join Redknapp, it would signal returns to the club for the two former favourites.

Ferdinand spent 12 years at Loftus Road, scoring 80 goals, while fellow striker Allen hit the net 40 times in 87 games for Rangers.

If Redknapp was under any illusion about the enormity of the task facing him in trying to keep QPR in the Premier League, a biblical message from Joe Royle quickly reminded him.

‘Joe Royle sent me a text saying keeping us up would be like turning water into wine or feeding the 5,000 or something,’ said Redknapp. ‘I have never read the Bible but he meant it would be a miracle. We will try but it is going to be hard.’

Royle was speaking from a position of experience, having fought top-flight relegation battles with Oldham in the early Nineties.

QPR are still waiting for their first win of the season after Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Aston Villa, when Jamie Mackie cancelled out an early effort by Brett Holman.

Redknapp said: ‘Not winning causes anxiety, it always does when you are bottom of the league.

‘Football is like life — it is about confidence. When things are going well, you win games and you come off and think, “We were rubbish today but we won again”.

'Sometimes, like us at the moment, you play well and come off and can’t get a win.’

'I actually spoke to him the other day,' said Beckham.

'I was at their party and he said: “You know let’s just exchange numbers and we’ll speak to each other”.

'And then I called him up, I think I was in Washington, and I said: ‘I know you’ve spent a bit of time here, I need a restaurant. Can you tell me a nice Italian restaurant’

'And he told me a great Italian restaurant.

'My friend was like: “C’mon really Really Usually you call a directory for a restaurant. Now you are calling Michael Jordan”.

'I chose the number 23 because of Michael Jordan,' Beckham admitted.

'When I first joined Real Madrid, I’d worn number 7 for many years for Manchester United.

'And when I moved to Real Madrid, Raul wore number 7 so there was no way that I was even think about taking it off of him and I don’t think it would have been accepted very well if I had even asked that question.

'So 23 was available and I’d always been a huge fan of Michael Jordan and I’ve loved him as a player and a person.

'Everything that he represented. Everything that he did in his career. I was a huge fan so yeah it was a no brainer. And then when I moved over here…it was just kind of a number that I wanted to keep because I’ve been successful with it with Real Madrid, and like I said being a fan of Michael Jordan.'

As he prepares to move his family back from America and accept a new football challenge, Beckham has paid tribute to his wife Victoria.

He said: 'My wife’s amazing.

'She’s really understanding.

'The other halves always go through difficult times because we’re always away, we’re always playing in different countries and different parts of the world and it’s difficult, so my wife she just wants what makes me happy and she knows that playing this game makes me happy.

'And she’s always left those playing decisions down to me.

'Family decisions we’ve done as a couple always.

'Whatever’s the best for our children, you know that’s always our first priority.

'But with my playing side, she’s always helped me out with the decision but it’s always down to me.'

Good work: Gabriel Agbonlahor congratulates Christian Benteke after his goal

Paul Lambert again defended his decision to exclude Aston Villa's record signing Darren Bent from his matchday plans as his side gained a crucial 1-0 home win over Reading.

A late header from Christian Benteke, who has replaced Bent as the number one striker, moved Villa out of the Barclays Premier League relegation zone.

But there was no place again for 18million signing Bent even amongst the substitutes with rookie striker Jordan Bowery preferred.

Lambert denied there was any fallout with Bent or that the striker had left the stadium before kick-off after his exclusion from his plans.

Lambert said: 'Darren was in the squad, it was the same on Saturday. I just picked the same group. I do what think is best for Aston Villa.

'But honestly, I don't have a problem with Darren Bent and I do rate him as a player.

'I've no problem with his attitude in training, none whatsoever.

'Did he storm off No, not a thing. I would tell you. I thought he was fine. I read the team out. The most important thing is Aston Villa.

'Will I listen to offers in January Honestly my main concern is winning games for this club, nothing else.

'Can Bent play again for us Yes, never rule anything out. But I pick a team to win, I never pick one I think will lose.'

Lambert is aware of the significance of Villa's third win of the season.

He said: 'It was a big result because we knew the Arsenal game at the weekend would take a lot out of us.

'Reading had also played well against Wigan so knew it would be a tough game. But I don't know about it being a six-pointer. Never look at things now, look in May.'

Reading boss Brian McDermott was left to bemoan his side's defending when Benteke headed home an Ashley Westwood corner 10 minutes from time.

It was another late and crucial goal conceded by the Royals who lost 3-2 at Wigan.

He said: 'I thought we were going to get a point. I knew the first goal was going to be crucial.

'I thought the shape of the team was good but to lose the goal from a set piece was disappointing.

'I thought we had solved the late goal problem. But it's not a six-pointer. It's a game of football and we've got a game of football to look forward to against Manchester United at the weekend.'

Gabriel Agbonlahor is pleased to see strike partner Benteke becoming a hit with the Villa fans.

Agbonlahor, captain for the night, told Sky Sports 2: 'You can tell by the fans' reaction how much they've taken to him.

'He's still only 21 but he doing great for us. He's helped us with the goal tonight and all credit to him.'

Benteke's
header was a rare highlight in an uninspiring 90 minutes but Agbonlahor
said: 'It was a scrappy game but we'll take the three points and move
on.'

Kept in reserve: Darren Bent was not even on the subs bench

That feeling was
shared by midfielder Barry Bannan, who said: 'There's less expectation
against the big clubs and it was hard to come out tonight and win the
game but we dug in and got the three points.

'It's massive. We need to win games
and it's big relief for us. There's been a lot of people talking about
us being in the bottom three and it's hard to take.

'We've
got to keep doing what we're doing and hopefully it's good enough.
We've got a great team spirit here, we're all young lads and we're
