Fulham want to call key defender Brede Hangeland in for showdown contract talks before Christmas in an attempt to prevent him leaving the club on a free transfer.

The Craven Cottage club are keen to tie down their 31-year-old captain to a new and improved long-term contract.

But if Fulham are not able to agree an extension with Hangeland then they are ready to listen to offers in January for the Norway skipper, who is understood to earn in the region of 40,000 a week.

Manager Martin Jol has made sorting out Hangeland’s future a top priority for the club’s board — but the centre half has so far resisted their efforts to begin negotiations.

As the situation stands, Hangeland — who has made 169 Fulham appearances since joining in 2008 from FC Copenhagen — can sign a free transfer pre-contract agreement with a foreign club in January.

Tottenham new boy Clint Dempsey has revealed how his exit from Fulham left him close to tears.

The American forward fell out with manager Martin Jol during pre-season, resulting in suggestions that the 29-year-old had refused to play for Fulham – claims the forward denies.

Liverpool were expected to complete a move for Dempsey, but instead he joined Tottenham in a 6million deal, registered just minutes before the 11pm deadline eight days ago.

'I just remember calling my wife and my mom and almost wanting to break down in tears because it was a tough time,' Dempsey told Sports Illustrated.

'Going into that last day and night there were still a lot of question marks. It wasn't clear cut this was going to happen.

'Some other things came up and you are going through that struggle, which was not fun for anybody. It was difficult for Fulham and for me, not knowing how it was going to end.

'It's about holding on to hope that something was going to happen that both parties would be happy with.

'In the end that was accomplished, but the deal didn't get done until about 9pm and that was when a fee was agreed.

'But then you had to look at all the logistics, trying to get to Tottenham's training ground, trying to make sure all the paperwork was through, doing the medical, signing the contract and having everything sent back before 11pm.'

On the rumours surrounding his exit from Fulham, Dempsey said: 'I did not refuse to play. Some things that were said were not true.'

Demspey was Fulham's top scorer last season with 23 goals but is now looking forward to proving himself across the capital.

'I'll die a happy man in the sense of knowing I was able to see if I could do it (at a higher level) or not,' he said.

Sunderland midfielder Kieran Richardson is on the brink of a 2million move to Fulham.

The former Manchester United midfielder is in talks with Martin Jol after Sunderland accepted a bid.

Martin O'Neill said: 'A club have made an offer for him today, we have accepted that and given Kieran the chance to look at that. If he comes back I will be pleased but I think he wanted to pursue this and we'll see what comes of it.'

Richardson was not included in the 18 for the Capital One Cup second round victory over Morecambe, and O'Neill revealed the reason afterwards.

He said: 'A club has made an offer for him today and we, as a club, have accepted that, and it gives Kieran the opportunity to find out for himself.

'If it doesn't materialise and he comes back, I'll still be pleased, but it's a position we might have to go and have a look at.

'Jack [Colback] played very, very well there tonight, but Kieran wanted to pursue this and have a look at this, finding we had accepted the offer, and I will see what comes of it.'

It would come as no surprise if the former Manchester United player, who is in the final year of his contract, did leave the Stadium of Light after weeks of speculation over his future.

O'Neill has already been linked with a series of replacements, and he confirmed he would look to make progress on that front if a deal was to go through.

He said: 'It is something, if Kieran does go, that we would have to look at.'
