Formula One testing Mugello: Sebastian Grosjean fastest

Grosjean and Kobayashi share top spot at Mugello test session

Romain Grosjean underlined the competitiveness of Lotus on day two of the Formula One test at Mugello, but had to share the honour of fastest lap time with the Sauber of Kamui Kobayashi.

Tuesday's running had been heavily affected by rain, but after a damp start the teams were able to take full advantage of a dry track on Wednesday, with Grosjean setting the time to beat by lapping the Italian track in one minute 21.603 seconds before lunch.

The Frenchman's performance suggests the pace the team showed in picking up a double podium in Bahrain was no fluke, although his time was equalled by Kobayashi during the dying embers of the day.

World champion Sebastian Vettel and team-mate Mark Webber shared the running for Red Bull, with the German's afternoon time proving marginally quicker than that managed by the Australian in the morning as they finished third and fourth.

Felipe Massa was fifth for Ferrari at their home track with the Toro Rosso pair of Jean Eric-Vergne and Daniel Ricciardo, who had less than an hour's running, next up to cap a good day for the Red Bull-affiliated teams.

Michael Schumacher completed the most laps as the German racked up a total of 144 in his Mercedes to finish the day eighth, ahead of the Marussia of Charles Pic and Vitaly Petrov's Caterham.

Gary Paffett was 11th for McLaren having managed just 59 laps, one place ahead of Timo Glock in the second Marussia. It also proved a challenging day for Paffett's fellow Briton Paul di Resta.

The Scot only got in 14 laps due to technical problems to languish in 13th place, with only the Williams of Bruno Senna slower than him.

Grosjean said: 'It's always good to end the day on top, but we have to remember that in testing lap times mean very little.

'Having said that, the car felt great and I was very comfortable from the start. This test gives us an opportunity to try things that we wouldn't have time to do during a race weekend, so hopefully it'll help us to keep pushing forward.

'We've done a lot of set-up work today, and for sure we'll need to take some time to look through all the data and analyse what we need to focus on tomorrow, but it's a good baseline for the final day.'

Roy Hodgson"s philosophy – taken from UEFA sessions

Revealed: Roy Hodgson's philosophy, as seen in his UEFA tactical briefings

Roy Hodgson's studious approach to the game will be tested at the highest level when he becomes England manager. Here, Sportsmail unveils some of the secrets of Hodgson's 35-year managerial career from a series of tactical sessions he contributed to UEFA’s study centre.

FORMATIONS

On playing 4-4-2… The major strength of the system is the back four, because the defensive unit covers the entire width of the pitch. It also gives options to get players forward, especially full backs. I would almost exclusively always look to play with a back four.

The two central midfield players are defensively minded, but they must also be skilful. With the 2006 Italian World Cup-winning team, they had Andrea Pirlo and Gennaro Gattuso in the centre, with Francesco Totti dropping in.

Way to win: Italy trio Andrea Pirlo (bottom left), Gennaro Gattuso (bottom third right) and Francesco Totti (top right) complimented one another perfectly

Way to win: Italy trio Andrea Pirlo (bottom left), Gennaro Gattuso (bottom third right) and Francesco Totti (top right) complimented one another perfectly

That can create problems because the system needs a second striker, even if his position is ‘lapsed’.

Even with the 2006 Italian team, despite their success, they were often trying to find one man, Luca Toni, in a crowded penalty area.

On playing 4-3-3… The main benefit is the three central midfielders. When Chelsea were at their best under Jose Mourinho, they had Claude Makelele and he would say: ‘Don’t worry boys, you go ahead, we’re OK, I’m covering.’

If you play with wingers, as they did with Arjen Robben and Damien Duff, then you have the advantage of real wingers, but the major problem is isolating the lone striker.

The human shield: Claude Makelele was vital to the way Chelsea set up

If Robben beat his man, got a wonderful cross into the danger area, who is going to attack the ball When the ball is lost, the wingers immediately came back to protect the midfield. The 4-3-3 could arguably be called 4-5-1.

On playing 3-5-2… The benefit is you are well covered in the middle, but the problem is out wide. The best team I have seen use this system is England under Terry Venables when Tony Adams, Gary Neville and Stuart Pearce played in the ‘three’ and Paul Ince was stationed just in front of them.

The problem with the system defensively is that generally it uses three centre backs and they don’t want to move out of their comfort zone — they don’t do so well when they are faced with Cristiano Ronaldo dribbling at them out wide.

ASHTON'S VERDICT: Likely he will go with 4-4-2.
GOOD FOR: John Terry, Gary Cahill, Ashley Cole, Glen Johnson, Scott Parker.
BAD FOR: Gareth Barry, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard.

CHASING THE GAME

On losing with 10 minutes to go… It’s not as straightforward as just banging it in there. What we have to do is get that ball in the penalty area with quality, in to good players’ feet to win penalties or turn with the ball.

If you don’t have those players, then you go for the big man, the Peter Crouch kind of goal against Trinidad & Tobago at the 2006 World Cup. It is a useful weapon. If the opposition score a wonder goal from 40 yards you should not change everything and start slinging some balls into the penalty area.

On retrieving a losing situation…
It is a question of assessing risks. You could go gung-ho, but a good
team will deal with that and pick you off on the counter-attack.

Big man up top: Peter Crouch is an ideal late substitute

Big man up top: Peter Crouch is an ideal late substitute

The problem for coaches is when to take enormous risks. When do we put a third striker on and weaken the midfield I spoke to Rinus Michels when he was at Cologne and he was a great believer in possession football but there were times when he threw away all his principles to stick two big guys up front.

ASHTON'S VERDICT
GOOD FOR: Peter Crouch, strikers still on the bench: Danny Welbeck, Daniel Sturridge.
BAD FOR: Theo Walcott, Ashley Young, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Aaron Lennon.

HOLDING ON

On defending a lead… Matches are won and lost in a tiny area inside the penalty box and you don’t want lots of balls there. If you start defending deeply, then the ball will come into the penalty area more.

Most teams want to start defending maybe 10 yards in front of the penalty area. The best way to win a match is to score another, then the opposition have to take enormous risks.

Milan, Liverpool, Arsenal and Barcelona have all done well in the Champions League over the past few years and you could not call them defensively minded.

ASHTON'S VERDICT:
GOOD FOR: Joe Hart.
BAD FOR: Clumsy defenders, such as Glen Johnson.

Juventus are ready to make a 25m move for Robin van Persie if Arsenal fail to agree a new contract with the striker.

And Van Persie's representatives have reportedly held talks with Juventus sporting director Fabio Paratici.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester City are also interested and underlines why David Dein believes Arsenal must act quickly to agree a new contract for club captain and PFA Player of the Year Robin van Persie.

The Dutchman has scored 27 goals for
the Gunners this season and has becoming an increasingly integral part
of Arsene Wenger's side, especially since the sales of Cesc Fabregas and
Samir Nasri last summer.

Van Persie's contract expires at the
end of next season and the club risk losing for him for free if a new
deal is not agreed soon.

Dein, who was the club's
vice-chairman when Van Persie was signed in 2004, told Sky Sports News:
'He is very important to the club and it is not every day you can get a
guy who can score over 30 goals in a season.'

'There
was a lot of competition at the time and we are very fortunate he
signed for us. I was delighted and he has proved the point because he
has been such a prolific goalscorer for the club.

'He plays with passion, he plays with his heart and, as you heard in his speech, he is a very modest guy.

'He has done a great job for the club and the fact that he has stayed with the club all this time, when he has had plenty of opportunities to go elsewhere, says a lot about Robin’s character.'

The 21-year-old has been outstanding on loan at Serie A side Lecce this season, attracting interest from several top European clubs.

But Udinese, who were initially expected to let the player leave at the end of the season for a fee of around 8million, are now believed to be keen on keeping him.

Speaking to Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Mauro Cesarini, the player’s agent, said: 'In normal circumstances he will wear the shirt of Udinese next season.

Heerenveen hot shot Bas Dost has snubbed a move to Aston Villa.

The 22-year-old last month spoke positively about the prospect of joining Alex McLeish's side, but is now said to have set his heart on moving to a more competitive club.

Italian agent Carmine Coviello has been employed to sound out interest in Italy, with Inter Milan said to be considering a move.

Wolfsburg and Valencia have also been linked with the Eredivisie top scorer, who has hit 28 goals in 30 league appearances this season.

Coviello told Sportmediaset: 'Dost has expressed a willingness to play for a big club next season and we are probing different clubs to try to take him to Serie A.

'All I can say is that we are offering him to teams who can spend €10m-€13m (8m-10.5m), because this is what Heerenveen demand.

'He turned down Aston Villa because he wants to play for a top club. We are working on pleasing him and we expect some responses.'

Livorno's players and thousands of supporters paid their respects to Piermario Morosini, who died while playing for the club in a Serie B match at the weekend.

Morosini collapsed during Saturday's game at Pescara and was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

The 25-year-old's coffin was taken to Livorno's Armando Picchi stadium, where its arrival was greeted by the large crowd, many of whom had earlier laid down candles, cards, flowers and flags at the main gates.

A blessing by Livorno's bishop Simone Giusti followed and fans were invited to place flowers and scarfs on the coffin before Morosini's hearse completed a circuit of the stadium in front of packed grandstands.

Morosini's body has now been taken to his home city of Bergamo, where his funeral will take place on Thursday.

A minute's silence will be held in Morosini's honour at all Italian football matches this weekend.

Livorno, who Morosini joined on loan from Udinese in January, have said they will retire his number 25 shirt, and today club legend Igor Protti revealed he had requested a section of the Picchi to be renamed in Morosini's honour.

'I asked the mayor to dedicate a section of the stadium, and they said he fully agreed. Now we will see how to proceed,' Protti said.

Protti added on Sky Sport 24: 'It was a very moving occasion and very hard to swallow for everyone, especially for the family of course.

'Football in these past days has demonstrated a unity which in recent times there has never been.

'I saw our opponents' fans, like those of Pisa, come here to pay tribute to Piermario, and I saw in the eyes of players who observed the minute's silence a sense of disbelief about what has happened.

'I never knew him when he was here in Livorno for three months, but these past days I got to know him from the statements of his friends and team-mates, and he comes out as a great person.'

On Monday, an autopsy carried out on Morosini returned inconclusive results.

The post-mortem examination lasted more than six hours but a coroner later confirmed further tests were required.

Piermario Morosini: More must be done to prevent heart attacks

More must be done to prevent football tragedies, insisits Italy's sports minister

12:22 GMT, 15 April 2012

Italy's sports minister Piero Gnudi has requested for athletes to undergo more frequent medical tests following the sudden death of Livorno midfielder Piermario Morosini.

The 25-year-old, on loan from Udinese, collapsed during Saturday's Serie B match at Pescara and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted on Monday to ascertain whether Morosini's cause of death was cerebral or cardiac.

Gnudi said: 'It is always difficult to accept the death of a young man of only 25, especially during a context of enjoyment and sport.

'The recent repetition of dramatic incidents like this must also force us to work on doing everything possible to guarantee accurate and frequent medical tests so that we may limit in every way the chance of this happening again.'

Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba has made remarkable progress since suffering a cardiac arrest during the FA Cup quarter-final at Tottenham four weeks ago, but Italian volleyball player Vigor Bovolenta died during a league game last month at the age of 37 following a heart attack.

Morosini's death has shocked the nation and the Italian Football Federation have cancelled all matches this weekend.

The Italian Olympic Committee have invited other federations to request a one-minute silence to be observed in memory of Morosini prior to any games taking place on Sunday.

Damiano Tommasi, president of the Italian Players' Union, has planned a meeting in the near future to discuss testing of players for heart-related problems.

'It is a tragedy that leaves us helpless and disarmed,' Tommasi said to www.assocalciatori.it. 'An event like this is inexplicable.

'We wait to find out more from the autopsy, but now the prevailing sensation is of sadness.

Repeat: The incident in Italy had echoes of Fabrice Muamba's collapse

'We had a meeting planned on Monday, which has been postponed, but we will now organise a get-together to discuss this tragedy and the problems tied to ensuring the safety of players.

'If in professional divisions there are certain guarantees, tens of thousands of players in the amateur Leagues have very few scans.'

Italy already have a very advanced screening programme for heart problems in athletes but some believe that even with those precautions, tragedies cannot be avoided.

'The players are monitored every four or five months,' Lazio coach Edy Reja said. 'But tragedies can happen. It's life's destiny.'

The match was abandoned and the players left the field in tears.

Lega Serie B then confirmed on their

the match between Pescara and Livorno, Piermario Morosini has died.

'The 25-year-old player, who came
through the youth ranks with Atalanta, arrived at Livorno from Udinese
in January and played nine times for the Amaranto.

Speaking in the aftermath of the
match, escara's general manager, Danilo Iannascoli, said: 'He looked at
me in the eyes when he was taken into the ambulance. We are living
through a drama.'

Italian media said a car belonging to
traffic police blocked the ambulance's way into the stadium and a
window had to be broken so the car could be moved.

'I don't know if the ambulance was
late, but I know that the entrance onto the pitch was blocked by a
vehicle,' Iannascoli said. 'Morosini collapsed, he tried to get back up
but then collapsed again.'

Later it was announced that all matches in Italy's top two divisions had been postponed.
