Darren Barker secured a routine victory over Simone Rotolo and the vacant IBF Intercontinental title after the Italian was forced to withdraw before the start of the fifth round.

The middleweight, fighting for the second time in a matter of months after a cruel run of injuries, needed to make a statement with his domestic rivals also progressing and would have been underwhelmed that the opportunity to do so was taken away.

Barker is one third of a rivalry with world-title contender Matthew Macklin and next month’s WBC challenger Martin Murray and impressed with a relaxed approach at the start but soon after fought more raggedly.

Rotolo was knocked down after a flurry
of punches towards the end of the first round when caught against the
ropes but instead of stopping his opponent there and then, Barker lost
any real polish and instead messily pursued the knockout which
ultimately never came.

Edging each round if not dominating
them as a more polished Barker perhaps would have done, the middleweight
tested his opponent occasionally if not convincingly and was in the
midst of another flurry of punches when Rotolo significantly backed off,
avoiding the fight and shaking his hand in obvious pain until the end
of the round came and the Italian’s corner announced his withdrawal
almost instantly after.

'Macklin and Murray [who fights WBC
champion Sergio Martinez on 27 April]' are looking busy now, so I’d like
a fight with Andy Lee,' he said afterwards.

He told Sky Sports 2: 'I'm ready to push on now. There's the obvious domestic fights
and world title fights – I'm game, I'll fight any of them. It just takes
two of us to get the ball rolling and it could be rematches, trilogies,
whatever.'

Mario Balotelli came off the bench fire 10-man AC Milan to a 2-0 win at Genoa in a crazy Serie A match for the former Manchester City striker on Friday.

The Italian was booked within 30 seconds of coming off the bench in the first half to replace the injured Giampaolo Pazzini, who had just given Milan the lead.

Balotelli then latched onto Cristian Zapata's pass to fire home the second goal with an hour played.

Gareth Bale had a banana thrown at him by an Arsenal fan as he went to take a corner in Sunday's north London derby.

The linesman removed it from the pitch and no further action was taken after the incident.

Bale got his own back soon after, being
played in by Gylfi Sigurdsson and prodding the ball past Wojciech
Szczesny to open the scoring for Spurs against their arch-rivals at White Hate Lane.

Tottenham and Arsenal will issue a warning to supporters intent on using sick chants during this weekend’s north London derby.

Spurs will use Sunday’s programme and their official website to warn fans they will take a ‘zero tolerance’ approach to those found singing abusive songs, and fans who are caught doing so will be thrown out of the ground.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been the target of disgusting abuse from Tottenham fans in recent matches.

Likewise, former Gunners striker Emmanuel Adebayor has also been at the centre of vile chants from Arsenal fans since his acrimonious exit for Manchester City in 2009 and the club will also post a warning on their website.

Tottenham, meanwhile, are considering inviting Gareth Bale to the negotiating table to discuss improved terms as they seek to persuade him to stay for at least another season.

Bale has signed contract extensions in each of the last two summers and Spurs may try to persuade him to do so again. Bale is waiting to see if Tottenham qualify for the Champions League before making a decision.

Real Madrid will accelerate their efforts to lure Bale if Cristiano Ronaldo fails to sign a new contract. Real will only formalise their interest if Ronaldo indicates he won’t extend a deal that is due to expire in 2015.

Meanwhile, a UEFA security officer has been appointed for Spurs’ Europa League clash against Inter Milan at the San Siro on March 14.

Both Chelsea and Arsenal have turned down the chance to sign Wesley Sneijder – despite the Dutchman potentially being available for free.

It's the Inter Milan midfielder's massive 200,000-a-week wage demands that are proving a turn off.

Unsurprisingly, the Italian club want Sneijder, 28, off their wage bill but agents contacting Premier League clubs on Inter's behalf have failed to drum up any interest.

The Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport reported over the weekend that Liverpool had made a 9.5m offer for him.

But Sneijder quickly rubbished the rumour, telling a press conference: 'Again, no truth.'

Sneijder, who was signed from Real Madrid for 24m in 2009, has snubbed suggestions from Inter that he take a 1.6m pay cut and has been dropped from the first team.

He said: 'Clearly it's best for everyone concerned that in January I am transferred. If that doesn't happen then I will stay. I have a contract with Inter until 2015.'

Paul Lambert insists his young side will bounce back after a Gareth Bale hat-trick condemned Villa to their second hammering over the festive period.

An 8-0 thrashing at Chelsea was followed up yesterday by a 4-0 home defeat at the hands of Spurs, with Gareth Bale notching his first Premier League hat-trick.

After an impressive victory over Liverpool last weekend, two successive defeats see Villa occupying 16th place in the table – just three points above the relegation zone.

Their manager is adamant the mood in the camp will not be an issue though, ahead of Saturday's six pointer against 18th-placed Wigan at Villa Park.

'Whether we win, lose or draw, we always try to treat the players the same way and try to keep their spirits the same,' said Lambert.

'One thing in football is that you can't dwell on it and you have to recover – there is no other way.'

Bale was back to his devastating best as Tottenham ran Villa's youngsters ragged.

The Welshman twice went close to netting in a goalless first-half before he added three goals in 23 minutes to Jermain Defoe's 57th-minute opener.

It was a magnificent virtuoso performance from the 23-year-old, his lethal finishing reminiscent of his famous Champions League treble against Inter Milan in 2010/11.

Bale now has 10 goals in all competitions this season, and Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas afterwards hailed Bale as one of the world's best players.

'He is up there with the best,' the Portuguese said:

Wesley Sneijder's future at Inter Milan has been thrown into further doubt after the Dutch playmaker told the club he will not be signing a new contract.

The Manchester United target was told last week that he will not play for the first-team again until he accepts a pay cut from his 200,000-a-week salary, and he was not included in the matchday squad for Saturday’s 1-0 win over Palermo.

The 28-year-old has reacted angrily to the request from the cash-stricken Serie A side.

'In this way, there is little reason for me to sign,' a statement released by Sneijder's management to www.ad.nl read. 'How can I get in this position in which I do not play'

Sneijder, who’s current deal runs out in 2015, claims he was initially told he was not playing due to footballing reasons, but has now been told that his contract situation is the reason for him being dropped.

The former Real Madrid and Ajax star is rated as one of Europe's best midfielders and signed a five-year deal back in 2010 after helping the club to win the Champions League under Jose Mourinho, and he insists he still wants to play for the Nerazzurri.

'I was proud the contract that I signed,' said Sneijder. 'Even now I want nothing more than to be on the field. I am physically and mentally fit and would like to play.'
