Brazilian Luiz Gustavo could be on his way to Arsenal after Arsene Wenger added him to his January transfer shortlist.

The 25-year-old defensive midfielder has fallen out of favour at Bayern Munich this season, having joined the Bavarian club from Hoffenheim for 12m in January 2011.

With Bayern flying high at the top of the Bundesliga table, Gustavo's chances in Jupp Heynckes' team have been limited and he is keen to move as soon as possible, according to the Sunday Mirror.

Wenger, meanwhile, knows he must strengthen an Arsenal side sixth in the table.

Demba Ba talks stall with release clause set to kick in at Newcastle

Ba contract talks stall with Newcastle braced for striker's 7.5m release clause to kick in

Newcastle striker Demba Ba is yet to be persuaded to sign a new deal as the January transfer window looms.

Sportsmail understands the 27-year-old Senegal international has rejected the club's latest offer as they attempt to negotiate out the release clause contained in his initial contract.

Despite concerted speculation during the summer, no potential suitor activated the 7.5million get-out which could have lured the former West Ham frontman away from St James' Park.

However, while supporters heaved a sigh of relief that last season's leading scorer would be staying on Tyneside, manager Alan Pardew revealed that the clause would become active once again next month.

The Magpies have been locked in negotiations with Ba's representatives for some time, but there is understood to be a significant gap between the wage deal the former are prepared to offer and that which the latter are willing to accept.

Newcastle are hopeful that the player, who has scored eight times this season, is happy to stay and he too has given little indication that he is looking to leave.

Pardew will hope for a breakthrough if he is to avoid a month of waiting anxiously to see if the former Hoffenheim player will remain within his grasp by the end of it.

In the meantime, he will hope Ba and compatriot Papiss Cisse can find the goals to fire the club out of their current Barclays Premier League slump as they head into Monday night's home clash with Wigan looking to avoid a fifth successive defeat.

Jan Vertonghen will hold talks with Ajax in a bid to resolve the dispute which is holding up his transfer to Tottenham.

Vertonghen has been in discussions with Spurs for some time but the centre-back has been unable to finalise his move to White Hart Lane due to a contractual dispute with his current employers.

It is understood that the Belgian, who is in the final year of his contract, believes he is entitled to a cut of the reported 9million transfer fee, but Ajax disagree.

The two parties will meet today with the aim of resolving the dispute so 25-year-old Vertonghen can complete his move to the north London club.

'We have a meeting with Ajax at the end of this morning to come to a solution,' read a statement from Nakhli Mondial, who represent Vertonghen, in today's De Telegraaf.

'There is some movement and we have the intention to come to an agreement.'

If the transfer is completed Vertonghen will become Andre Villas-Boas' second signing since he took over earlier this week.

The Portuguese has already snapped up Gylfi Sigurdsson from Hoffenheim and he is determined to add more youthful players to the ranks.

Andre Villas-Boas to spend big at Tottenham

AVB plots 50m revolution as Tottenham target Champions League

Andre Villas-Boas has been handed a 50m war-chest to help him crack the Premier League after being confirmed as Tottenham's new manager.

The 34-year-old Portuguese, sacked by Chelsea in March, has been given the go-ahead to spend big as Spurs target a top-four finish and a place in the Champions League.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will press
ahead with a 20million move for Marseille striker Loic Remy, who
scored 14 goals last season, reports the Daily Mirror.

Levy also hopes to strike a deal with
Manchester City for Emmanuel Adebayor, who enjoyed a successful loan
spell at White Hart Lane last
season.

He also wants Ajax and Belgium
defender Jan Vertonghen (10m), Hoffenheim midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson
(8m) and CSKA Moscow and Russia midfielder Alan Dzagoev (12m).

Spurs could rival Manchester United for Portugal midfielder Joao Moutinho and are also tracking Jack Butland, the teenage Birmingham keeper who was a surprise choice
for England’s Euro 2012 squad.

To fund the new signings, Tottenham
will finally sell midfielder Luka Modric, who has been linked with Real
Madrid, Chelsea and both Manchester clubs.

Dutch midfielder Rafael van der Vaart
could also leave, with German club Hamburg, where he played from
2005-2008, keen to re-sign him.

AVB claimed at the start that his Chelsea project was a three-year plan, but was sacked even before his first season was over.

Now he has a three-year deal at Spurs after being confirmed as replacement for Harry Redknapp, who
was sacked last month despite delivering three top-five finishes.

But the 34-year-old’s appointment
only four months after his sacking by Chelsea drew quick criticism from
former Spurs boss Glenn Hoddle.

‘I did not think that is the way
Spurs would go,’ Hoddle told ESPN. ‘It’s more than a slight risk because
of the way things didn’t work out at Chelsea.

‘I thought it might have been better
for him to go and reinvent himself elsewhere before he had another crack
at English football.’

Villas-Boas
was in London on Tuesday to complete the deal to become Harry
Redknapp’s successor, bringing trusted aides Jose Mario Rocha and Daniel
Sousa with him as he bids to repair his reputation after poor results
and talk of rifts with senior players marred his time at Stamford
Bridge.

‘Tottenham Hotspur is a great club
with a strong tradition and fantastic support, both at home and
throughout the world. I feel privileged to be its coach,’ said
Villas-Boas. ‘For me, this is one of the most exciting coaching
positions in the Premier League.

‘I have had several discussions with the chairman and the board and I share their vision for the future progress of this club.

‘This is a squad any coach would love to work with and together I believe we can bring success in the seasons ahead.’

Chairman Daniel Levy will open the chequebook to help Villas-Boas reaffirm his position as one of Europe’s best coaches.

‘We are constantly looking to move the club forward,’ said Levy. ‘It is important we now look to develop the potential within the squads at all levels while strengthening the first team in the summer in key positions with players who will become part of the future success of this club.’

While Villas-Boas’s official title of
head coach indicates he will not have total control over the club’s
transfer policy, the Portuguese is wasting no time in strengthening his
new squad.

Villas-Boas, who tried to sign Modric for Chelsea last summer, is privately resigned to losing the influential midfielder, with the Bernabeu his likely destination.

There are also concerns over current goalkeepers Brad Friedel and Heurelho Gomes and resolving the uncertainty over Ledley King’s playing future is also believed to be high on Villas-Boas’s agenda.

The club captain’s contract expired on Sunday but he will test out his troublesome knee in pre-season before making a final decision on whether to retire. Villas-Boas would be forced to pick a new skipper if King retires, with Scott Parker and Michael Dawson early contenders for the armband.

In addition to Rocha and Sousa joining the club’s coaching set-up, it is understood Villas-Boas wants to add another two members to his backroom team.

Liverpool are poised to make an offer for Parma’s former Chelsea and Swansea striker Fabio Borini.

The 21-year-old player has been on loan at Roma, whose 7m option to buy him ends today.

Currently a member of Italy's Euro 2012 squad, Borini spent a successful stint at Swansea under the tutelage of new Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers.

Hoffenheim have given midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson a deadline of June 30 to secure a move to the Barclays Premier League.

The Iceland international had been set to complete a return to Swansea, where he spent the second half of last season on loan, for a club-record 6.8million fee.

However, the departure of manager Brendan Rodgers to Liverpool halted the deal before the 22-year-old could have his medical and Anfield now seems to be his preferred destination.

Last week Rodgers admitted he would be interested in signing the midfielder but stressed the player had to first speak to Swansea – who appointed Michael Laudrup as their new boss on Friday.

Sigurdsson's German club, who began pre-season training on Monday, have granted extended leave in order for him to complete a move to England.

'Gylfi Sigurdsson will not be with TSG 1899 Hoffenheim for the start of pre-season,' said a statement on the club's website. 'He has, after consultation, obtained a prolonged holiday until 30 June.

'The club wants the 22-year-old to continue to secure a future in the Premier League.'

Hoffenheim head coach and former Liverpool defender Markus Babbel said it was best for all parties if the player had the time to sort out a move.

'Gylfi wants to stay in England and is in negotiations there,' he said.
'Thus it makes no sense for both sides for him to return to Hoffenheim, perhaps only for a few days.

'If, by the deadline on June 30, he has done nothing then he will return to his pre-season with us. We have agreed this with him.'

Sigurdsson is contracted to Hoffenheim for another two years but despite impressing in his first campaign in 2010/11 he dropped down the pecking order last season, forcing his loan to Swansea where he scored seven goals in 19 appearances.

It has been reported Liverpool will have to pay a fee in the region of 8million as Swansea had negotiated a lower figure as part of their loan deal.

Southampton and Reading are also believed to be interested.

Meanwhile Liverpool are negotiating with Hoffenheim over a fee of about 8.2m for midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson, 22.
