I'd vote for myself to win the Ballon d'Or if I was allowed, declares Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo has lived up to his reputation of self-absorption by declaring if he could vote for himself to win the Ballon d'Or, he would.

The Real Madrid superstar is second favourite behind Barcelona rival Lionel Messi to pick up the prestigious FIFA award which crowns one player the world's best, on January 7.

'If I could, I'd vote for myself,' he told France Football.

'I am what I am and I'm happy with that. Being too humble isn't good. In Portugal we say that too much humility is vanity.'

'I play for the passion of football,
and for the love of the teams I represent. If I was playing for money,
I'd be at another club,' he said.

'All players love it when teams like
Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United or Chelsea dream about them, but
that's not in my thoughts.'

On November 2 Messi said he would not be voting for Ronaldo to win the award.

'Last year, I voted for Xavi, Iniesta and Aguero, in that order,' he told Catalan daily Sport.

'I reckon this year it will be the same. I have not thought about it yet, but it will be more or less the same.'

Messi added: 'Xavi and Iniesta will be there for sure and I am thinking between [Gonzalo] Higuain, [Angel] Di Maria or Aguero.'

Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has offered his support to Ronaldo by backing the player to the hilt.
'If Messi is the best on the planet, Ronaldo is the best in the universe,' the enigmatic coach declared.

The Argentine maestro has already pipped Ronaldo to one award – picking up the European Golden Shoe for the 2011-12 campaign.

He hit an astonishing 63 goals, beating the competition's previous record of 47 from Dudu Georgescu in 1976-77.

Ronaldo trailed Messi with a none-the-less remarkable 57 goals.

A 23-man shortlist for the award was constructed by the FIFA Football Committee and experts from France Football.

The three finalists names will be announced on November 29 before the eventual winner is decided in Zurich.

Former Real Madrid, Barcelona and Brazil striker Ronaldo believes Messi deserves the award.

He told the FIFA website: 'Messi would get my vote because, in addition to being decisive – scoring loads of goals and winning trophies – he’s able to bring a special and different kind of magic to football.

'Cristiano Ronaldo is a very technical, very skilful and very pragmatic player, but Messi continues to produce the unexpected on a regular basis.'

River Plate captain and former France international David Trezeguet found it difficult to separate the two players.

He said: 'There’s no doubt that Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi continue to be a class apart.

'Nowadays, when you watch Real Madrid or Barcelona, there are definitely other players with the potential to mix things up a little, but right now those two are still very different to everyone else.'

Trezeguet continued: 'They’re different kinds of players, both physically and in terms of their individual characteristics.

'Cristiano is a more physical and athletic type of player. Messi, on the other hand, is physically very good too but technically he’s got a very South American – and not at all European – flavour to his game.

'They’re both players of the highest level and I think they share the same ambition: to outdo the other.'

Manchester City's chances of progressing in the Champions League have been helped by confirmation Real Madrid's in-form full-back Marcelo will be out for three months with a fractured metatarsal.

The 24-year-old is to undergo surgery in Amsterdam after damaging his foot on international duty with Brazil.

Real's Fabio Coentrao, Alvaro Arbeloa, Sami Khedira and Gonzalo Higuain also picked up injuries while on international duty.

Real Madrid secured their first
Spanish Super Cup since 2008 on away goals after a narrow victory over
arch rivals Barcelona in Wednesday's second leg at the Bernabeu.

The hosts had failed to win in their
last seven home meetings with Barca but went about ending that record
early on with goals in the first 20 minutes from Gonzalo Higuain and
Cristiano Ronaldo.

The visitors were then reduced to 10 men as Adriano was shown a straight red card for denying Ronaldo a clear goalscoring opportunity, but they regained their composure and were brought back into the game by a stunning free-kick from Lionel Messi just before half-time.

Chances continued to come at both ends after the break but Real failed to make their man advantage count and were nearly made to pay as Messi shot just inches wide deep into stoppage time.

Real had failed to win any of their previous three games this season but they did not seem like a side lacking in confidence as they stormed out of the traps early on.

Higuain should have opened the scoring
on seven minutes when his low effort across Victor Valdes was well
blocked by the keeper, but the Argentinian was gifted his goal only two
minutes later by compatriot Javier Mascherano as the Barca defender
misjudged a long ball forward from Pepe and allowed Higuain to run
through and this time finish low beyond Valdes.

And it was two just nine minutes later as Ronaldo pounced on an error
this time by Gerard Pique. The Portuguese brilliantly back-flicked the
ball into his path and, despite a poor second touch, his powerful shot
rebounded in off Valdes' body.

The chances continued to come for Real as Valdes again denied Higuain
from a narrow angle before Pepe had a header controversially ruled out
for a push on Mascherano.

Part of Barca's disorganisation at the back could possibly be put down
to a late change in the starting line-up as the injured Dani Alves had
to be replaced by Jordi Alba with Adriano moving to right-back, and the
Brazilian's torrid evening only lasted 27 minutes as he hauled down
Ronaldo when he seemed set to break free on Valdes once more.

After another unsettling five-minute period for the Catalans, new coach
Tito Vilanova eventually introduced Martin Montoya for Alexis Sanchez
and a return to four at the back seemed to offer the visitors some
comfort as they began to make an impression on the game.

Montoya was inches away from converting a vicious low cross from Andres
Iniesta before Messi did eventually halve the deficit moments before the
interval with an incredible swerving free-kick from 30 yards.

Ronaldo nearly responded with a long-range effort himself that flew just
past and Angel Di Maria also shot narrowly wide as Madrid ended the
half threatening a third.

However, at the start of the second period, it was Barca's tiki-taka
that began to dictate play as the pace of the game dropped markedly.

Pedro very nearly scored a carbon copy of his goal in the first leg as
Mascherano's perfectly weighted pass saw him through on goal but his
prodded finish did not have enough power to get through Iker Casillas'
legs and the Spain captain collected at the second attempt.

Sami Khedira then nearly restored Real's two-goal cushion but was denied
by another fine Valdes save at the end of a brilliant run.

Barca remained dangerous, though, and another brilliant piece of play
from Messi released Alba through on goal, but he just over-ran the ball
as he rounded Casillas and was eventually crowded out.

Higuain should have given Real breathing space with 11 minutes remaining
but he hit the outside of the post with only Valdes to beat and that
miss nearly cost his side as Barca came desperately close to equalising
in stoppage time.

Firstly, Montoya was denied by a solid save from Casillas before Messi
seemed destined to hand Barca the cup as he found space on his favoured
left side just outside the area but the ball slipped just wide and Real
clung on for their first Super Cup title in four years.

Roberto Mancini is looking to boost Manchester City's striking options by making a 35million bid for Real Madrid star Gonzalo Higuain.

City are in a three way battle for the Arsenal's Dutch striker Robin van Persie along with Manchester United and Juventus.

And now City are looking elsewhere with executive Brian Marwood keen on a move for Argentine striker Higuain instead.

Higuain has also been a target for Chelsea and Tottenham, but money-bags City have the spending power to blow them away.

Mancini is belived to prefer Van Persie, but the Dutch striker is understood to be reluctent to join a host of former Gunners at The Etihad.

Higuain struggled to hold down a first team place at Madrid last season and despite Jose Mourinho keen to keep the striker it seems Karim Benzema is ahead of him in the pecking order.

If City were to make a move for Higuain then they would need to ship out one of their highly paid strikers in order to fall in line with UEFA's Financial Fair Play rules.

Emmanuel Adebayor looked set to move to Tottenham, but that deal is on the brink of collapse over his 150,000-a-week wage demands.

Carlos Tevez is another striker who could leave and Roque Santa Cruz – City’s forgotten 17m striker – is being offered around.

Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain hopes any deal to bring Luka Modric to the Primera Division champions will be wrapped up quickly.

Tottenham midfielder Modric has been linked with the Spanish giants and big-spending Ligue 1 side Paris St Germain, as well as Chelsea and Manchester United.

But Real are believed to be Modric's first choice after he failed to force through a switch to Barclays Premier League rivals Chelsea last season.

'I saw Modric at Euro 2012 and also at Tottenham,' Higuain told AS. 'He is a player who loves the club and us. I wish to close the deal as quickly as possible if it is for the good of the team.'

Real president Florentino Perez is looking to finalise the structure of the deal in the knowledge he could be forced to make a considerable offer after Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy rejected the 40m bid from the Chelsea last summer.

Higuain also played down rumours of his potential departure from the Santiago Bernabiu.

He said: 'I do not regret anything I've lived here. I could fulfil dreams and win titles, hopefully this year we will be the champions.'

Robin van Persie is facing a race against time to secure a move this summer.

Arsenal are determined not to let transfer negotiations drag on deep into August and risk a repeat of last year's disastrous opening to the season.

The club are even prepared to make their
captain see out the final year of his contract as they seek to avoid
disrupting pre-season, as happened last year thanks to the departures of
Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri.

Arsenal, who have let it be known to agents that they would want 30 million for Van Persie, are willing to let him run his contract down and leave on a free because they do not require the extra income from a potential sale.

The club have signed Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud and are expected to make further signings this month, with a defensive midfielder a priority.

Juventus are the only club to have made official contact with Arsenal but Van Persie will not move to Serie A.

Arsenal would prefer to sell to Barcelona or Real Madrid, although Madrid have gone cool on the idea now that striker Gonzalo Higuain seems likely to stay at the Bernabeu.

Andre Villas-Boas has sealed his return to the Barclays Premier League by taking charge at Tottenham.

Villas-Boas flew into the capital on Monday night to finalise the deal and is expected to be officially presented next week.

Villas-Boas, 34, has replaced Harry Redknapp at the helm as he bids to establish the club among England's elite.

Redknapp was booted out last month after falling out with chairman Daniel Levy.

Villas-Boas, who has signed a three-year
deal, will also bring trusted aides Jose Mario Rocha and Daniel Sousa
with him to White Hart Lane.

He will now embark on bringing new players to the club, with 8million Gylfi Sigurdsson expected to choose Spurs above Liverpool.

Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen is a long-term target, while Villas-Boas is also keen on Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge and Brazilian midfielder Oscar.

However, one of his most pressing tasks will be convincing Luka Modric to stay. The Croatian has his heart set on a move to Real Madrid.

Spurs sources claim Tottenham will try to negotiate a way for striker Gonzalo Higuain to be part of any deal to take Modric to the Bernabeu.

Villas-Boas is a huge fan of Argentina forward Higuain and tried to sign him during his time as manager of Chelsea last season.

Whether Higuain would consider leaving Madrid for a team not playing in the Champions League remains to be seen.

Italian champions Juventus have expressed an interest in signing Arsenal striker Robin van Persie this summer.

'Van Persie is a great player,' Juventus general director Giuseppe Marotta told Italian website Calciomercato.

'He is a complete player and would be useful to any team. But he still has one year left in his contract with Arsenal.

'We will try to put the icing on the cake this summer but the important thing is that the mix is good.'

Van Persie leads the Barclays Premier League goalscoring chart with 30 so far this season.

Juve have been closely monitoring Liverpool striker Luis Suarez as well as Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Higuain.

'Van Persie, Suarez or Higuain They are three important players,' Marotta said.

'In fantasy football we could have the three of them playing in the same line-up but in reality, it is different.

'If one of them arrives (here) is not because he will be the less talented as other things have to be taken into account, such as the financial aspect.

'Moreover, if (Real Madrid coach Jose) Mourinho does not want to sell Higuain it will be impossible for us to get him and we also have to take that into consideration.'
