Andy Carroll will not be allowed to leave Liverpool on the cheap with Brendan Rodgers undecided whether the 35m striker is part of his plans.

The 28-year-old is currently on loan at West Ham and will sit down with Rodgers at the end of the season to discuss his Anfield future.

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce is keen sign Carroll on a permanent basis, while the player’s former club Newcastle are monitoring the situation.

Although Rodgers has warned potential suitors they will have to pay the going rate for the powerful target man.

‘It’s absolutely the case that, just the same as last season, If the player does leave then it won’t be for nothing,’ Rodgers said.

‘He came here for an astronomical fee which was no fault of his own, so we will see what happens in the summer.’

Rodgers admires the robust qualities that Carroll can bring to a team, but hinted that he may struggle to accommodate a player of his type in his future vision for Liverpool.

‘Every player it is about the style, and how they fit into that. If you look at Luis Suarez he has flourished this season in the roaming role we have given him.

'We are a team that is set up to exploit his qualities,’ Rodgers added.

‘Likewise for other players you may have to set up in a certain way to get the best out of them.

There is no doubt Andy has qualities – some of his goals from set plays with West Ham have proven that.’

Lee Clark has added his voice to that of West Ham owner David Sullivan in asking for the issue of players' agents to be looked at.

Birmingham City's boss gave his backing to the claims made by the Hammers' owner that he had felt threatened after a number of deals last week fell through.

Sullivan said he was unsure which representatives were acting for which players as he attempted to push through signings.

And Clark, who was also on the defensive as he fielded questions about Birmingham's playing staff that the club needed to be off-loaded to meet cash issues, said something needed to be done.

He said: 'I read what David Sullivan had to say about agents and I agreed with him.

'We have had deals in place this week and there have been seven or eight people trying to jump in on them.'

He added: 'I don't know how it happens – perhaps a player says to a friend that he's getting a move and whether they'd like to earn a few quid – but it's getting so difficult to do them.

'Half the time you don't have a clue who actually represents these players.

'What I'd like to see is the player's representative actually listed with the Football Association. That way, it's transparent, it can be checked and everyone knows where they stand.

'Getting agents registered was supposed to solve the problem. It's not solved anything as far as I can see. It needs looking at.'

Yossi Benayoun is set to return to Chelsea when his loan at West Ham expires next week.

The Israeli attacking midfielder signed up for a second stint at Upton Park in the summer with an option to extend his deal in January should all parties agree to do so.

But the 32-year-old ex-Liverpool man revealed on Twitter that he has played his last game of his current loan spell at Sam Allardyce's side.

‘Recovering slowly from the injury..loan with west ham will be finish in few days so disappointed that I didn’t took part in the last games,’ he tweeted.

Benayoun established himself as a crowd favourite at West Ham between 2005 and 2007 after scoring eight times in 63 games, but he has managed just four league games in an injury-hit second spell at the club.

Frozen out: Arshavin

Frozen out: Arshavin

Arsenal outcast Andrey Arshavin is close to sealing a January move to relegation-threatened Reading.

The Gunners signed him for 15million in 2009 but he has held talks over a switch to the Madejski Stadium, where billionaire Russian owner Anton Zingarevich wants the 31-year-old – a superstar in their homeland – to bolster his struggling squad.

Arsenal are listening to offers for Arshavin, out of contract at the end of the season, as they try to shift his 85,000-a-week contract off the wage bill.

Arsenal, who are willing to take a hefty loss on the forward, could offload him for as little as 2m. Sources close to Arshavin insist he is taking the offer seriously, given his frustration at Arsenal and the chance to link up with compatriot Zingarevich.

Reading have made an informal offer for Arshavin, who has been told he can leave if he can find the right deal for him and Arsenal straight away. His old club Zenit St Petersburg are keen, as are Fulham.

Marouane Chamakh, on 60,000 a week, is the other big earner Arsenal will try to off-load in January. West Ham and Norwich are keen.

Thomas Ince is prepared to sit tight at Blackpool and run down his contract if the Championship club fail to agree a fee with Liverpool.

Ince, 20, believed the deal with Brendan Rodgers' side was almost done, but there is hitch over the price.

The England Under 21 winger's contract at Bloomfield Road is up at the end of the season and an FA tribunal would have to set the fee.

Blackpool want 6m for Ince, but Liverpool are offering substantially less for a player they released 18 months ago.

Liverpool still have a 30 per cent sell-on clause in Ince's contract, but the Blackpool wideman is determined to return to Anfield.

He has scored 13 times for Michael Appleton's side and has contributed 15 assists from his position on the wing.

Blackpool are already in dialogue with Liverpool about the January move, but it is being held up by the Tangerines' playing hardball.

Rodgers, who is short of attacking options because of Andy Carroll's loan move to West Ham and the long-term injury to Fabio Borini, needs the deal done in the transfer window.

He is surplus to requirements at Arsenal and, although there has been interest from Fiorentina, the player wants to stay in England.

West Ham, however, face a battle to hold on to Momo Diame, with foreign sides now showing interest in the midfielder alongside Newcastle and Arsenal.

The Senegal star will be fit in three weeks after damaging his hamstring last week and can leave for 3.5million.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have added Toulouse right back Serge Aurier to their list of potential targets. The club remain wary of Bacary Sagna leaving next year and have watched 19-year-old Aurier.
